Currently sitting in a hospital listening to this as basically an anthem to make myself feel better. 😌 I'm gonna make it through this year if it kills me.
I'm a college freshman this year., having to experience my classes on zoom and through Canvas, despite desperately wishing I could be in a classroom. I am someone who will be voting for the first time on Tuesday, hoping for the best and preparing for the worst. In the past week, I have experienced grief and sadness, and loss, as well as immeasurable happiness. I am currently sitting on the floor of my dorm room listening to this and absorbing it. I am going to make it through this year, even if it kills me.
Hey, bestie. I know its hard and extremely difficult but don’t be discouraged. Your life is just starting and you will create wonderful experiences that you may laugh, smile or even cry. Don’t be afraid to grasp the moment. You will do amazing things. - A 4th year college student who believes in you
Never has a song been more relevant. I’m sure I’m not the only one who has discovered this amazing band throughout this pandemic, not sure how I’d have made it through without them. Thank you Gents ❤️
I've been a fan of this band for 15 years now (which makes me a fairly recent convert compared to the old heads from the cassette days) and I LOVE the fact that people are still falling in love with them in 2020.
This song has practically been my anthem for 2020, but something about seeing it played live after everything we've been through just brought me to tears. We're almost there guys. We really are gonna make it.
John your music literally saved teenage me from killing myself. You've been hurt so much, and when listening to your music we hurt together, things don't seem as bad. Even when I go years apart from listening to your songs, I remember the lyrics like clockwork....thank you...from the bottom of my heart....you helped me save myself
If anyone from The Mountain Goats reads this... Thank you. This song has been a huge help in getting through 2020. There will be feasting and dancing in Jerusalem next year. Damn right.
I’ve returned here on the first day of 2022. Here’s to everyone who made it through last year despite all the trials and tribulations, and here’s to another year that will undoubtedly be full of its own problems, but we will make it through this year if it kills us. Happy 2022 everyone!
Don't know if I'll ever again be able to listen to this without tears in my eyes. I miss the sound of the whole crowd clapping along, but the drums are certainly working hard to make up for it! Come up to Canada again and I'll be there!
The Sunset Tree is probably my favorite album I've heard from The Mountain Goats. It was the first one I listened to and it had some songs I could relate to more than some of their other albums.
@@davidwilliama.7296 Totally. And I just think in terms of the actual musical richness of it... "Lion's Teeth" still gives me goosebumps from the sheer compositional genius
listening to this in the dark after a day of working in an ED was a transcendent experience. this song got me through a lot in the past, and it'll get me through more to come. thanks, JD 🌱
I was lucky enough to see Mountain Goats last year in London. Great gig, well worth the 6+ hours of driving. This song was my theme to last year after losing a few family members and my own health issues. This year, it's still just as apt.
I found this song after new years because someone had "I am gonna make it through this year if it kills me" on an Unas Annus tattoo (Remember them?) and Ive had the lyric stuck in my head ever since the day Unas Annus died
I got to see a friend just before second UK lockdown started. Spotify recommended this to me (had never heard it before) and I listened and cried on the train home. In many ways, compared with many people, I'm playing this year on easy mode, but it's still fucked me over. Bring on the feasting and dancing next year.
Timely and great to see you all performing. Your music has been carrying me through these difficult months, the new stuff and the comforting familiar tracks like these. Can't wait to see you guys live in the spring, thanks and God bless
I’m gonna deadlift like a fucking monster tomorrow, maybe the other guys have bigger arms but I’ve got more rage. Nothing else to think about just me ,a whole lot of plates and next year. This is my good times song brothers
I've been listening to this song for a few years but it's never been more relevant than now. Honestly, ever since I came across it, when I wanna give up on something or I'm facing an overwhelming challenge the lyrics, "I'm gonna make it through this year if it kills me" pop into my head and it keeps me going forward. Thank you so much for this amazing song!! I love this version and I love that you guys are finally getting all the attention you deserve!!! 💙
I love watching people find joy, especially in these days. From 3:00 on, this is just joy. Thank you, Goats, for being part of this world and bringing that defiant joy to my day.
thank you for all the amazing music, I feel so blessed whenever I listen to it. I'm not american, I'm not even a native english speaker, but your lyrics always touch my very heart.
Idk if these guys realize just how hard this song hits people like us. I miss my dad's old car with it's straight six...something about it's exhaust note really moved me. Hope to see everyone in 2022, but i doubt i will...so many of us won't be making it through this year, and it kills me.

Stay strong Andres. You've got this.
This song got me through a very hard year. You can do it, Andres.
This song has gotten me through the past four years. I hope all goes well for you.
Make it, andres!
We're here for you. You can kick 2020's stupid butt.
okay but JD's vocals on this are a delightful mix of controlled and unhinged at the same time
Not much different to normal then :D
the key is delightfully off as well
This has always keeps me from following through with it.
Same. I must make it through This Year

I remember those feelings so, so well. I hope you're doing ok now.

Hope you're doing well, Emily. Remember to focus on what matters, do the things you really want to do, listen to some Mountain Goats, and keep voting.

That’s hands down my favorite album of theirs. First discovering it was quite an experience
I saw them live this past December in a tiny converted church venue in upstate New York.
Literally life-affirming stuff

Five years, I keep going. Thanks dude.
This is a truly great song
can't count how many years i've had this tradition of playing This Year on New Year's Eve... because This Year will not kill me.
Oh we really needed this.

I blasted this every morning when I went to work during 2020. And it still helps me even now early in 2023. Love this damn song.

Opening 2023 with this!
I remember you talking about growing your hair out when you were in Denver. It suits you John. Thank you for saving my life

Thanks John & Friends! Loved this version!!!
Among all things I could say about this song..goddamn we love you Darnielle, and we are glad you are still here rocking it.
Hell yes
Love the Mountain Goats.
Note: If Jon Wurster plays in the band it's worth a listen. This guy plays with my favorites.
Is there a reason they haven't announced that The Mountain Goats are playing this year's Super Bowl halftime show yet?
because technically that's next year
@@MistaDobalinaMistaBobDobalina calendar year, yes, but it'll be still the "year of the pandemic."

Is JD aware that he's rocking the "Ella Enchanted Evil Uncle" look?

Heading back into lockdown, so I think I'll just keep playing to myself whenever I need the determination to get through it all.
Dead, but making it through this heavy year. Goats forever.
My favorite song by John! I thought he didn’t sing it now because he didn’t want to return to that place in his head.
Fucking great! Thanks Mountain Goats
This and Amy aka Spent Gladiator 1 have been really helping me maintain sanity during the Pandemic
I needed a new recording of this song, tonight more than in quiet a while. Thank you.
I feel de vibe! Merci :-)
This sounds amazing as ever live. Only a handful of bands can do that.
