The 1st gen Legend's C25/C27 is insanely reliable and has no known issues other than lifters getting sludged up and ticking if the oil isn't changed on time, but the 2nd gen Legend's C32 unfortunately quickly became notorious for blowing head gaskets for no apparent reason, which is a real shame because there's no other reason a manual transmission 2nd gen Legend couldn't run virtually forever with no major failures. I think we would see a lot more 2nd gen Legends still on the road if they didn't have that head gasket problem.

NO you’re the one that’s about to get schooled!
The 2GR issues have nothing to do with maintenance.
Bad water pumps, leaking timing cover both very common issues and both need engine out to fix and this is one of the hardest engines in history to ever work on 20-24hr jobs costing $2500
$1k to fix the leaking rear valve cover and don’t get me started on the very very common DEATH RATTLE that if not fixed will destroy the engine and these engines are very hard and expensive to get second hand and not to mention install cos everyone wants one to replace their broken ones because they’re all now in the DEATH RATTLE age.
The GR series V6 engines are the worse layout of any engine to ever come out of japan and shouldn’t have even made the list.

Acura tech here. The J-series is one of the best engine families ever. However, the VCM is not the only oil burning issue. The J37 variants used spray-on liners to reduce weight. The silicon-impregnated aluminum coating is very similar to nikasil, which was used in many German engines. They used a poor ring design that clogged up in the alusil blocks, resulting in excessive oil consumption. Only the 3.7 litre versions had this particular issue. I’ve owned 5 different vehicles with different iterations of the J. Easily my favorite engine to work on and own.

I have a late 2018 Infiniti Q50 with the VR30DDTT, it's not a Red Sport but I have had it tuned so that when I put the car into PERSONAL mode it changes the profile to that of a Stock Q50 Red Sport on Sport+ mode, it cost a few hundred USD to have that done, was relatively simple in fact since its a stock map and there is minimal hardware difference between the RS and the Luxe models.
The VR30DDTT is FAST, even stock, its FAST and it's an absolute blast to drive. The early VR30DDTT's had issues with a "porous block" where your block would leak coolant into the engine thus making it drink "the forbidden milkshake" and needing a complete core replacement which was done at Infiniti's cost. There is also another issue with early VR30DDTT engines where the oil dipstick was too short and people were not putting in enough oil for it causing engine failures, that has since been corrected and if you own an early model they do make a replacement dipstick as well.
The final "issue" with the VR30DDTT are that it does require 3,000 - 5,000 mile oil changes, even with the best synthetic oil's, the engine is VERY TIGHT TOLERANCED and those twin turbos will cook the hell out of that oil, thermal breakdown happens quickly in these high performance engines, CHANGE YOUR OIL REGULARALY, NO EXCEPTIONS!. It's not really an issue but people tend to push their oil changes to 10K -15K on the regular and they shouldn't with this car.
I know a few people locally that have Q50's/Q60's that are pushing 800 hp with just bolt on's and the stock internals hold it easily, it's most common rival is actually the BMW B58 which is a straight six.

    • @2seep
      @2seep 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Not boltons. You need z1 turbos to push 750 whp on stock internals if you keep the torque below 600lbft. Very impressive for an engine with 3 liter and no forged rods nor pistons. A b58 can get 800whp on stock internals, but keep in mind it has forged con rods and crankshaft. Both amazing engines

A good thing to note - the Honda J series engines only ever had oil consumption issues on VCM motors. Anything older (example- J32a2, j35a3) or from a manual version of the later v6 accords never had an issue at all. Those non VCM engines are unkillable with nothing but oil changes and a belt every 100k (easy work). VCM engines are totallt saveable as well with a cheap "VCM muzzler" (basically a secondary coolant temp sensor trick device) that disables the vcm without a check engine light.

Great points. Some of the J series also had issues with spark plugs popping out very rarely, but that's about it as far as I know. My friend has a 2014 Odyssey with the J35Z8 and it's still very solid with no noticeable oil consumption at about 140K miles. The transmission has been junk since he bought it last year with just under 100K, but a failing V6 automatic transmission is no surprise to anyone who knows about Hondas.

You can try some type of VCM muzzler and hope for a long term decrease in oil consumption along with regular oil changes using a good oil, but don't expect a miracle. The idea is to get the muzzler BEFORE problems start. It's much more effective as a preventative than a repair.

Great list, very interesting! I am somewhat surprised that Honda's C series ended up in the S tier considering all the head gasket problems the C32 and C35 had in the 2nd gen Legend and RL. It's a common enough problem that "BHG" is a very well known acronym in the Legend/RL community for "blown head gasket". But other than that, they are very good engines and way ahead of their time, especially the C30 in the NSX.
My 1990 Legend has the C27A1 and it's not the fastest, but it is very smooth and quiet with a nice torque curve and is still in excellent shape 34 years later with 180-185 PSI compression across all 6 cylinders (new engine is 171 according to the service manual). Something to note, there were 2 variants of the 3VZ engine: the 3VZ-E, which is the infamous boat anchor found in late 80s-early 90s Toyota trucks; and the 3VZ-FE, which saw life in FWD applications, such as the early 90s 3rd gen Camry. The latter is a far better engine, but is not really compatible with its longitudinally-mounted sister.

The VE, maxima guys know about that engine. The VE30DE, should be look at like a VG30DE. It is a step in-between the DOHC VQ30DE and the OHC VG30E. Nissan wanted to put the VG30DE into the Maxima however the DOHC VG heads from the 300ZX and J30 were too big for the space they had to work with so they designed heads specially for the maxima SE trim, the VG30E made 160hp and 180lb/ft. Actually Nissan should be praised for this, instead of just redesigning the hood with a bulge to get the heads to fit, they redesigned the head, partially why Nissan was broke with this engineering approach but still. it was known for its playful revving nature and its wide powerband. It was actually pretty top end happy. It was a very reliable engine the only real issue was the VTC solenoids: 90s cam timing. The VQ took over being it was cheaper to manufacture, lighter and made the same horsepower more torque without the aid of cam timing.
Something interesting to read regarding that car. Look at Car and Driver's review of the 2004 TSX and what they said about that car and its relation to this Maxima.

The 3vze was the only engine that had head gasket issues out of the VZ's and was only with the 4runner. The reason it had issues with head gaskets had more to do with crossover pipe design than actual engine design as many other vehicles before it worked just fine with it. the 5vzfe had none of those issues as they fixed the heat buildup issue with better cooling of the heads. The VZ can also handle quite a bit of power and very reliably. This is especially the case with the 5vzfe that can handle well over 600k with a supercharger that came optioned through TRD. Even the hated 3vze can handle well above 300k miles, and most of the examples of the 3vze out there are already well past that. It deserves B teir, especially with the supercharged options, maybe even A tier and bump vq down a peg. The 5vzfe sounds good with an exhaust too.
