Wow, Carolyn. I am going to repeat myself and say what another great tutorial. The pictures you took while stitching were wonderful. I have no questions about how to put together a biscornu after watching this video. Thanks for taking the time to pass on your knowledge. Looking forward to other videos.
Febby Marsh Thanks so much! I'm really enjoying doing these tutorials and I hope to inspire people to create more FFOs and in the process motivate myself to do the same :) x
Carolyn, this is a fantastic tutorial! It was thorough and clear and very well done. Your biscornu turned out beautifully. I now have the confidence to make my own. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for the tutorial. Was passing on biscournu, because it looked too complicated, but now I am definitely more optimistic. It looks so cute and elegant!
+Līga Vasara-Brakmane Awesome! Don't be scared by it... just take your time, and use a magnifier if it helps - it definitely helped me :) Happy stitchin g:) x
Thank you. Very Helpful. I've just finished 2 panels (front/back) from a pattern I downloaded and your instructions on assembly are very much appreciated. I will be attempting assembly after I watch your video a few more times. Your suggestions for beading have me thinking about my next biscornu.
Tina Healey Fear is just an illusion to stop us from achieving our goals.... don't listen to it... otherwise you'll never get anything done. I'm speaking from experience! I've put so many things off because I was scared I'd stuff it up... I've learnt to just give it a try and see what happens. Things are never as bad as you imagine :)
awesome tutorial Carolyn I have made many biscornu all different sizes and I love the idea of starting the button on the pieces first I will use this technique next time for sure. Thanks hugs Patty BC Canada
Patty Smith I'm glad you learnt something new from the video Patty :) I hope to create many more of these gorgeous little treasures too. Happy stitching :) x
Awesome tutorial. Thank you for sharing. I have always stuffed my pin cushions with sheep fleece. I wash the fleece just enough to get the dirt out but keep some of the lanolin in it. This prevents my pins from rusting. I've been doing this for 30+ years and have never had a rusty pin. ;)
Dot Smith Wow that's a great idea Dot! Do you have sheep yourself? I might have to go and stalk a few farmers and ask for some of their fleece LOL :) x
+Carolyn Mazzeo Not any more. My husbands family were fine wool merino farmers but the farm was sold a little over 10 years ago. I used to spin and he used to be a shearer so I guess that's where I learned about stuffing pin cushions with wool. It works very well. 😉
Dot Smith That's very cool! My brother used to be a manager at Coats Patons in Tasmania many years ago - have you heard of them? He would have been able to supply me with endless amounts back then, if I'd known about it. I had a conversation with him recently about DMC and I told him it was made in France. He disagreed with me and said it was made in China, because everything is these days. He was so convincing, I had to do some research online just to make sure of what I was talking about. He owes me an apology LOL. :)
Thanks for this tutorial, Carolyn! :D I never knew about whip stitch before so I'm sure that'll come in handy! I'm hoping to do a biscornu at some point in the future, too. :D xx
Emily Chadwick My pleasure Emily :) It's very easy and with the backstitch lines as a guide, you can't go wrong. I really hope you do get one stitching one day. Happy stitching :) x
Carolyn, thanks for this very informative tutorial. FYI, crushed walnut shells can be found in the pet supply area in places like Walmart. They are used for many things, including cat litter or lining animal cages. They are really great for homemade pincushions because they add dead weight to the item and the shells really do keep pins and needles sharper. Often you will find that craft people will sell a small amount of the crushed walnut shells (like 8 oz) for $7 or $8 USD. That is a rip off as they are no different than the huge bag of 8-10 lbs you can buy in the pet supply area for $9 to $10 USD. Believe me, they are identical. I also add lavender to the walnut shells in pincushions so I get sharper pins and the light scent of lavender when using the pincushion.
The crushed walnut shells are called "Lizard Litter" and can be found in most pet supply stores! Identical to the crushed walnut shells I purchased from an on-line quilt store at a much lower price! LOVE your beautiful handwork! Thank you for sharing!
I love watching your xx videos and techniques. Pardon my ignorance, but what is a biscornu used for? I've only just now become interested in everything cross stitch after watching the talents of every stitcher on you tube, where beautiful and inspiring pieces seem to come to life, so fascinating. I want to learn this art so bad.
valletta654 A biscornu is a pincushion. Biscornu is French and means skewed, quirky or irregular. I cannot draw or paint, so I find cross stitch is a great way to produce my own kind of art. I find the whole process very therapeutic and relaxing.... and at the end I have a beautiful piece of artwork to display anyway I wish. I hope you decide to learn how to cross stitch - I'm certain you will enjoy the benefits of it. Thanks for watching :) x
Carolyn Mazzeo Thank you so very much for your explanation. I love sewing and a pin cushion would come in very handy. The only problem is, wouldn't it get ruined by all the pins poking into it. Is it filled with felt or fine sand. Honestly I am going to try - fingers crossed.
valletta654 I guess it all depends on how careful you are with it. You can iron some interfacing onto the rear of the design before assembling it (to protect the stitches more), but if I had done that to this piece, it would have covered up the holes from the diamond eyelet stitches in the centre. You can fill it will fibrefill (wadding), crushed walnut shells, weighted pellets, and I believe also pencil sharpenings! I would advise against sand, as it would seep through the holes in the cross stitch fabric. I hope you do give it a try! Happy stitching :) x
+Tamara Jarvie A biscornu is an irregular shaped pincushion. I'd never heard of them until flosstube. I just need to do one now for myself :) Biscornu (biscournu) is the name for a small, eight-sided pin cushion that became popular in the first decade of the twenty-first century. The word biscornu is derived from the French adjective biscornu, meaning irregular, skewed or strange.
Stunning biscornu, Thank you.
Wonderful! I now have the incentive to try to make a biscornu thanks to you.

+Sarah C Oh yes, you totally can! Don't let them intimidate you - as long as you take your time and don't rush, you'll be fine. Best of luck! :) x

Carolyn Mazzeo It kinda looked fun to put it together. I have been eyeing up the fairy tale/Disney ones from Cloudsfactory.
