Norfolk and Western 611: Excursions in Virginia 1992

- It is the spring of 1992 and my Dad ventured out to capture some steam excursions pulled by Norfolk & Western J class #611. The first several scenes is a trip from Greensboro, NC to Lynchburg, Va. The rest video is an excursion in April 1992 from Manassas, Va to Lynchburg and return on the former Southern Railway. Special thanks to my Dad for allowing me to upload these films to the internet. I miss that Whistle the old days one
My uncle got to see 611 himself back in 1986, and even gave me the very photo he took to me as a gift back in 2016. It’s happily hung up in my room next to several other steam train photos

Unfortunately, that's not how it works. The whistle equipped on the 611's original excursion career was worn (steam cut) a certain way to make it sound like this. Over time and years of usage, whistles are worn down, which results in slight changes in pitches from the original factory specifications. It just so happens that the 611's 80s-90s whistle was worn down in a way that made it sound more pleasant than the current whistle it wears (from sister 610). The current whistle actually blows the factory spec'd pitches. It might not be as pleasing, but this is what the locomotive would have sounded like in service in the 50s.

@@FanRailer From what I've quite literally heard, thank you whistle comparison videos, 611 didn't have the exact same whistle all through out its second career, unlike what you've said here. From what I've heard, she had a number of different long bell 3 chimes, one even coming from one of Uncle Pete's 4-8-4's. Talk about variety on the same style of 3 chime throughout the years.

@@justahillbilly7777 I never said the 611 didn’t wear more than 1 whistle in its current career. I was only talking about the CURRENT whistle it wears, owned but Scott Lindsay, which it has worn since 2016. In 2015, it wore that ex-UP whistle owned by Cheri George, which sounds the same pitches but is steam cut so adversely that the tonal quality is quite raspy.
@@FanRailer Ah. Nice to have some clarity on the whistles it's had through out its current career. Also, you kinda did say 611 only had one whistle through its second career due to the use of "...the 611's 80s-90s whistle...". A quick fix to that would be to shorten it to just say 92 - 94 whistle so as to avoid any confusion.
I wish she could've kept this whistle. Her current one sounds so bad 😭
frankly i wholeheartedly disagree; the one she wore last fall was the best whistle 611 wore imo, the old ones sound too harsh and gritty for my taste; the latest whistle has a lot more tone to it, it's just more pleasant to listen to. what about the new one do you hate so much?
@@user-vm2rq8uv6u the One she has as of late 2023 is a NP Hancock Longbell. I'm much happier with how that sounds
