      I have a problem. I don't know how to confess, I missed my first communion when I was a child, it was conducted in our elementary school and I was not present at that time. Now I'm 38 years old, badly and in need of confession because of my sins, but I don't know what to do the reason I still haven't received my first communion and I am ashamed and fear the priest may scold or get angry with me because of that. Please help me. Thank you.

      Priests have heard it all. The only 2 things they haven't heard are Piracy on the high seas, and Robbing a stagecoach.
      I heard that from a religious, lol.

      @@janvincentvillalon1538 I highly recommend you find an RCIA group at your local church. It isn't just for people who are converting, but it's also for people who missed sacraments when they were younger. Confession is one of the Sacraments they will walk you through, along with anything else you might have missed. I have never had a bad experience in Confession. Priests have heard it all! :) God bless you and I will be praying for you.

    I was addicted for 15 years, and I tried quitting at least a million times. I thought I was going to be trapped in that world forever - I felt like a disgusting woman every day. It’s a freaking miracle I’m free from p*rn now for 1.5 years. To break free, it required me to become freaking disciplined + heal from past experiences. Even with that, it wasn’t good enough, but through persistence and God’s grace I was able to finally break free. It was the most challenging thing I’ve ever done, and it’s been the greatest blessing.

    Do it everyday, go for confession, ask the priest for advice during confrssion, and, finally, don't be too hard on yourself if you fail. Just keep trying.

      I did and still do struggle with this. In some ways it’s even harder because you can’t take away the “access”. Through the grace of God, I’ve been mostly clean for a while now. Healing is possible, and you can do it with His help! Every time I fell and every time I have a near occasion of sin/relapsing, I get to confession. That and developing a prayer life will begin to heal you and this addiction will begin to fade.

      I didn't watch it, but as time went on, the temptations started to roll in, thoughts I haven't thought of in years would suddenly come into my mind. I also live in an area where attire is very immodest, it's a pornographic society we're living in, it's a nightmare. I've been struggling, only with God's grace/help I have been able to recover for these past months. God help us all.

    Thank you for talking about this. I’m a 45 year old woman. I was first exposed to pornography when I was 10. It was readily available to me and I quickly developed an addiction. It colored all my views and understanding of sex and led me to some very unsafe sexual places. After converting to Catholicism and finding a very good therapist to start healing my childhood sexual trauma around 8 years ago I began overcoming my addiction but it is still an every day battle and I occasionally fall. It is amazing and terrifying both how far I can fall and how fast. I have had some spectacularly humiliating confessions. My husband is my accountability partner. He has adult content filters on all my devices and helps keep me safe. We do what we must. So many people need so much healing. I pray every day for the women who create pornography.

    Honestly, the goal isnt to white knuckle sobriety and "keep the streak going." Its to be free. And in this inatance we need to find something worth healing for. Christopher West did this phenominal video about pornography, about what it really is. Its simply us quenching that burning desire in our hearts because we dont trust that God will, or we are too impatient. We are too weak to live in "the ache of desire". Quitting porn and masturbation shouldnt just be the focus. Growing into a strong dignified person CAPABLE OF GIVING their sexuality to someone else needs to be our driving force. if we are addicted to self soothing that ache of desire, what kind of gift are we to someone else?

    I found my first porn magazine at 7 to 8. 48 years ago it was much harder for a kid to gain access. I had an addiction to it till i was 50. At that point i went through a brutal divorce and found myself alone, helpless and addicted to pot and alcohol also. I renounced my many sins in the name of Jesus and asked God for help with many things that i was powerless over. I havent missed church except during covid in 4 plus years. I never miss an opportunity for daily mass (which i ussually cant make as i am a medical provider), eucharistic adoration, confession, holy water, watching religious programimg and asking God for daily help. I also pray the rosary 2 or 3 times a week. You can break this terrible, destroying addiction, just tell God you can only do it with his grace and ask him to remove it, you have to.truely mean it and renounce itnwith all your heart. Also pray for others when tempted! God bless and your eternal soul is worth fighting for!

    Fr Mike, this is a timely video. I'm 28 and I'm struggling with this. Today I considered going to Confession for this very issue, but stopped. I thought that, if I am weak enough to do this habit again and again, why ask for Christ's forgiveness if I am going to just persist in my weakness? I try to resolve my addiction before going to Confession, but I find this preliminary step difficult. I love Jesus and want him to make me pure. I'd want nothing more at this point than to get married, to remedy against sin, and for her to keep me on a straighter path to Christ. I am currently talking to a girl with whom I'd like to make this dream possible. I pray for that often. God Bless you Father and thank you for your inspirational and topical videos and guidance. Blessings from Ireland

    • @EpicWolverine
      @EpicWolverine ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I had the same inclination: to try to resolve it myself before going to confession. You can make a little progress, but you will fall again and again and grow frustrated with yourself. I urge you to go to confession anyway. You will fall again, and you will need to confess it again, and that will be frustrating too, but confession will heal your soul in a way you can’t on your own, and you will start seeing real progress. Go to confession as soon as you can and begin the healing.

      @@JohnHenrysaysHi I think St. Mary of Egypt's story is an example of that. How is sexual immorality evil though?
      In my mind sexual immorality is less offensive than cruelty and hatred.
      I think a truly cruel person converting to Christ is more shocking than a sex addict.

    • @JohnHenrysaysHi
      @JohnHenrysaysHi ปีที่แล้ว

      @@IONov990 Hi again! I believe sexuality is ordered toward 2 things: Unity (the good of husband and wife), and procreation.
      Similar to how bearing false witness against our neighbor is going against speech which I believe is ordered toward truth, sexual immorality is going against its intended good imo, and I believe God is Goodness, the source of all goodness, so I hope to do His will out of love for Him, and not offend Him.
      From the 10 commandments
      6. Thou shalt not commit adultery.
      Commands: chastity in word and deed
      Forbids: obscene speech; impure actions alone or with others.
      9. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife.
      Commands: purity in thought
      Forbids: wilful impure thought and desires.
      I believe we all have our gifts and all struggle with lust, wrath, envy, pride, greed, envy, and gluttony and being that all knowing, all loving, all powerful God is the Creator of the heaven and earth , I don't think anything would surprise Him. He loves us all and wants us all be joyful!
      Our culture might read this and think not much of it in comparison to someone who tortured and murdered someone:
      Matthew 5:27-28: "You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you, everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart."
      But, our value doesn't come from what the culture thinks. imo. God loves us!
      And if I placed my value in what others thought of me, then, I could feel horrible in comparison to those who were tortured to death serving their country.
      If someone helped volunteer at children's burn centers, they might feel worthless in comparison, and the culture might not think much of a bed-ridden crippled person who uses her little energy to pray for those in need.
      Our value comes from God imo. And He loves us so much!
      Jesus suffered and died on the cross to set every single person free. What He did suffering and dying is sufficient for everyone to heal us in all areas of sin of our brokenness.
      By knowing what Jesus has done for us, knowing the power of the Holy Spirit in us, by believing we can obey God.
      When we obey God, we live well, and by living well, our heart becomes more aligned with the truth, meaning we can see God more clearly and, with pure hearts we can understand what we believe.
      I prayed for those struggling with cruelty in their hearts. Please pray for me. Hope you and yours have a light-filled good day!

    As a psychologist and person with personal experience, I would like to stress the importance of coming clean with yourself. A lot of times, our pornography use is a coping mechanism or a way to distracat ourselves from past experiences, trauma and identity issues. You can try to cut down on the coping, but as lons as the underlying issue is not resolved, it is going to return one way or the other. Mark my words, ofcourse it's not the case for everyone. But a lot of times, it is. God can heal the underlying issues, but you have to be willing to see them.

      You are confessing your sins to God, not the priest. A good priest will never make comments on what you did and, if he does, must be for a reason, which is to guide you in the right direction to help you not fall into temptation again. You'll see that, once you do this, you'll feel lighter. Been there, done that.
      You are not alone. God wants us to help each other out. It takes courage, but you'll see it gets easier as time passes.

      Don't be afraid to confess. I assure you they've heard all sorts of things and pornography/masturbation is not a shock to them. I understand there is an enhanced level of embarrassment being a woman and confessing to sexual sin. I'm a woman who also struggled with lust and have had to confess. It's difficult but confession is a necessity

      Priests have heard it all before. Literally, they've likely heard way worse. Theres also the privilege of the seal of confession so everything you confess remains confidential, I believe it's canon law. These issues aren't unique to males, I guarantee that priests have heard it from women too.
      I advise that you go to confession and write a list of what you want to confess and out these things at the top. That way, you get them over with and out of the way. Perhaps you might think about writing it down and handing it to the priest to read? The hardest part is showing up to confession, everything that happens after you get there is easy peasy.
      This is all coming from someone who is actively struggling with these issues so I know what it's like. Were on this together

    Hey Fr and AP team! Thanks for sharing this-so necessary to hear this in our current era-great perspective about previous saints not having wrestled with this in such degree. I think Covenant Eyes and the 3rd angle of attack is a great initiative, I want to put this forth to you and the team, Covenant Eyes is geared towards first world affordability, what can be done for those who are part of the rest of the world? I never heard back from Covenant Eyes, posing this question to them.

    To fight this addiction we also need to set our mind on the superior joy that we have in Christ. If we have any hope of quitting an addiction we must replace the old thing with a new better thing, namely Christ and the wonderful message of salvation. Otherwise we will eventually simply return to old habits again and again. We must always live in the light of eternity, this life is temporary, and so are the pleasures it has to offer.
    Romans 8:5-6 "For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace."

    Greetings. It's so sad that so many people are addicted to P. Im addicted as well. I'm on day 7. I think the root of the addiction must be dealt with. It could be trauma or maybe boredom.I dont know there would be a whole lot of reasons. First I think we need to deal with the root cause. Like if you're bored and you started watching it(at the beginning of this addiction), it just means that you're using it as an escape from the reality. Most of the times I believe it might happen to not face certain things. Like boredom or trauma or something else. For me it was trauma. Because of that trauma I was hyperactive as a kid and I do believe that I started watching it because I didnt want to face this trauma.
    I guess, we can beat it if we look at the root cause. Please pray for me. I want to overcome this addiction completely. Praying for you as well.

      You’re on the right track.
      Look up PornReboot with JK Emezi. Have a morning routine that involves you writing down goals/affirmations that you want to accomplish for your sexual behavior…EX: 1 year from now I will be in full control of my sexual behavior.
      EX: I will immediately without delay attack all boundary breaking behaviors with the tools I have at hand.
      Read “Breaking the Cycle” by George Collin’s.
      Also find out what triggers/urges you to view pornography, it could be social media, loneliness, stress, etc.
      God bless you

    I actually permanently moved back to my Laptop, because I feel like being on my faster and better Desktop PC makes me do and post things that are just not who I really am. I know it's sounds super weird when i explain it. But when I'm on my old (recently refurbished) laptop, I feel like there's no pressure in doing/posting things that are not who I really am. Like I said: i know it sounds weird. But that's how I got a lot better with consuming pornographic content.

    its was in my sadness that i turned to pornography, and yes it is something that I've spent a lot of money on (seeking a new extreme as the previous content became stale). The anonymity of porn is something you bring up correctly, that fact that it is quite easy to hide the content i've been looking at and that it doesn't show as visibly on myself as something like alcohol or drug addiction may have done. The immediacy of porn is also correct as when I feel low or anxious, I know i can find this content instantly. It's sad because feelings of shame have long persisted as after each session I do think to myself 'that was a new low'. What saddens me the most is that all the time ive spent watching and participating in this graphic material, I could've spent with family, friends, learning, assisting the vulnerable, experiencing actual good in this world. It really is the shame that is so heavy, pornography is unbelievable shallow - nothing is gained, nothing is learned, nothing is taught - once I turn off the screen, I realise just how alone I really am.

    The last time I made a comment critical of what someone says in these videos the post was deleted within the hour, so I'll keep my thoughts on making an even bigger digital footprint in a fallen world to myself. I have struggled with addiction. I have tried 12-step programs, all kinds of conventional methods with people ultimately behind the wheel. What has kept me clean for more than 30 years? A simple promise to God and a simple request to Him to help me. And I was about as far away from a spiritual person as you could get in those days. Wanna get well? Step 1: Ask for God's help. Step 2: Trust in God's help. Step 3: Remember steps 1 and 2 and take it one day at a time, the 12-step folks have that one right. Sound too simple? The best answers often are. Occam's Razor with Christ at the wheel. But that's me.

    This isn’t related to the subject matter but I wanted to ask an important question. I recently came across canon law 1083 which I’m sure you all know is about the minimum age requirements for marriage in the church. 16 for men, 14 for women. At first I was shocked, being born and raised in the US neither of those ages are really generally acceptable for marriage (especially the latter). After doing further research I also came across canon law 1071 and 1072. 1072 states that pastors of souls (priests and bishops alike) are to dissuade minors from entering marriage if it is not an acceptable practice in the region. 1071 though states that without a bishops permission, the church is not to assist in marriage of a minor party if the parents do not know, or are reasonably opposed. What I gather from all of this together is that 1072 supersedes 1071 in the sense that if it is not a generally accepted practice in the region,then the bishop would not even have the option to give permission for this. I understand that some cultures have different cultural norms surrounding marriage and I accept that. Could someone please tell me though if I am understanding this correctly?

      1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
      2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
      3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
      4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
      Romans 3 kJV 🩸
      23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
      24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
      25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
      Romans 10 kJV
      9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
      10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

      Speak to a Catholic priest. You will need to go through a catechismal course. It is a vital decision that you make, but remember the first Christians had to do the same and they were persecuted and often martyred for it. I realise it is especially difficult for a Muslim in a predominantly Muslim county, but let that not discourage you. I will pray for you. May the Holy Sprit guide you. Matthew 10: 37-39
