Been taking metformin for about 25 years for type 2 diabetes, 2x1000MGS daily. Never had any side effects. It has, however, been very helpful in maintaining my A1C in the normal range for a non-diabetic.. I've had my B12 level checked several times and it is in the middle of the desirable reading . One side effect I might have is, since I will be 79 tomorrow, is the longevity effect metformin is now being tested for. I'm 5 years older now the the 2nd longest lived person in my immediate family. Of course I don't know if metformin has anything to do with the. From my experience metformin it is a safe, effective and inexpensive drug. No reason to fear taking but yes, you may or may not have side effects, like with any drug.......

I have been taking Metformin for around two years. I am taking the slow release tablets. I have been trying to increase up to 4 tablets a day. The regular Metformin tablets caused violent diarhea, not acceptable. I have had somewhat the same experience with the delayed release if I take the two tablets twice a day as they would like. I take one tablet with breakfast and one tablet with dinner and take one tablet should I have something in-between or after dinner. One huge problem that I don't want to attribute to the use of Metformin is extreme weakness, the worst being my legs. As I've taken more notice of it, the weakness is actually body wide. In the last 3 months I was taking another diabetic med that was causing sudden sugar lows. I was in the middle of the store where I was having extreme fatigue in my legs and I had brought my diabetic meter with me and my sugar had dropped from 109 to 64 - all within 20 minutes. All I want to know at this time is when the Metformin causes weakness - would only being able to physically walk for only 150 feet before needing to sit down, be within the realm of the kind of weakness metformin can cause? Every single thing has been checked out to see if there is anything else that could be causing it, and nothing has shown up. Metformin remains the only possible culprit. Prior to treating my Type 2 diabetes, I was someone who could and did walk indefinitely. I could walk as long as I wanted without fatigue.
I started to take metmorfin as prescribed by the doctor...unfortunately i am feeling very nervous and anxious ..I dont feel the same as before taking the drug..I lost my appetite and also I cant sleep at night .I get trouble in sleeping and off balance.So my advice to other patients...be careful before taking metmorfin as it may have several side effect on them also..thanks.
I stop taking metformin for three months. I was taking 1000 mil per day. When I start up again because my blood sugar was up. I experience diarrhea. It was awful. Now the doc told be to take half a day for two weeks then increase dosage gradually. I have done that and now I am too 1000 mil again. I have to lose weight or else.
Talk to your doctor. Request Metformin Extended Release. Solved my issues as I was sitting on the toilet half the day. Metformin ER, try it. If your doctor won't prescribe it, fire him or her and get a new doctor, one that will listen.

It works great for me and I hope the longevity possibility for metformin proves to be true. At 78 I have already lived longer than most diabetics. I too take 500s and begin to nod out in coffee hangouts !! I have to go take a 1/2 hr nap in my car because they don't let you sleep in the cafes...And this is after 8 hrs sleep at night !! Don't know if it IS the metfmn or my diabetes causing the sleepiness.. I don't put real sugar in my coffee, either..only Splenda and half n half... I think having things to do wards off the nod-outs, as just typing this here has gotten me past that nodding out point (so far, anyway)....

Yes! Not for some people, but for others it’s awful. Personally, I would rather have diarrhea. Constipation is horrible. I hope it doesn’t last too long. I tried taking two tablets and only got twice as constipated. The first three weeks were perfect. Maybe things will settle down? Now I’m taking psillium every day and living on celery. Rocks.

It is to help sort out glucose, not to lose weight for you. Tip for you .....eat less than normal and do more exercise every day and your weight will go down. There is no magic bullet!

@@bigpun8363 I should have said, I owed you all a FULL response to this issue --- I stopped using Metformin when I discovered being without it due to delay in the refill seemed to directly relate to my Kidneys clearing up a VERY great deal. I've felt better ever since. However, 3 Months later, a blood test revealed my 3-month blood panel showed my sugar went up 2 full points. My heart showed strange irregularities so I was scheduled for a number of tests on that, I was usually told by the heart specialists to stop Metformin during the heart tests, some days before, and some days after. I became very confident with good blood pressure in some Herbal Alternatives that are very highly recommended for Diabetes, and I was feeling very good. But a few months later, my blood sugar, A1c went to 13, only about 8 months after it was a 7-7.5. This was after more than 10 yrs of very steady rates of 6-7.5, with only very gradual fluctuations, at very small increments BOTH WAYS. NO SPELLS, ever, of Blood Sugar shock episodes whether too low or too high, at all. And No Sharp Spike ever. I had to go back on Metformin. 30 days later, with Metformin AND my other new Alternatives, as well, I was back down to 9. It is almost time for me to do one more new blood test. My doctor and I have found no alternative at this point. She is also borderline Diabetic and is very interested in my "experiments" and the results. But she does seriously talk turkey to me, and I am doing my best to comply with all she tells me, since I can tell she is not only interested in my case, but is evaluating what she learns from my case as to how she can apply promising results in her own case, as well. THIS IS WHY IT IS VERY WISE to make NO DRASTIC CHANGES without consulting with your doctor, and make sure they are AWARE of all you are doing. I was on 1000 mg. 2 times per day. Doctor took me off. I only take 2 if can't have constipation and it works like clock work! I'm 87.-
you forgot to mention the depletion of vitamin B12 absorbtion in the blood while using metformin and the need for supplementation if taking long term.

How is your experience with Metformin now?
You might want to try Glipizide my AIC Levels dropped from 8.7 to 5.1 in about a year and also got rid of the diarrhea swears and dizziness
Go low carb and fast regularly and you'll be able to trash those meds in no time

Metformine 500mg makes me so sleepy. I have a fatty liver too. I take 2 times a day 500mg and each time it makes me really sleepy. Is it one of those side effects?
Yes! I feel sleepy all day long 😴 I’m on week 1 of taking only 500mg per day and the weakness and sleepiness despite a 8 hours sleep is exhausting. I really hope this will pass with time
I too take 500s and begin to nod out in coffee hangouts !! I have to go take a 1/2 hr nap in my car because they don't let you sleep in the cafes...And this is after 8 hrs sleep at night !! Don't know if it IS the metfmn or my diabetes causing the sleepiness..
I don't put real sugar in my coffee, either..only Splenda and half n half...
I think having things to do wards off the nod-outs, as just typing this here has gotten me past that nodding out point (so far, anyway)....

I think metformin makes me gain weight. I noticed it every time I tried to take it. My mother over time has lost weight but very slowly she also has other medical issues though. I’m on inositol now after researching.

NO; I take two tablets if I'm constipated. I was on it for a long time and Dr. told me to stop; I just use it if I experience what I mentioned above.
Yes! Not for some people, but for others it’s awful. Personally, I would rather have diarrhea. Constipation is horrible. I hope it doesn’t last too long. I tried taking two tablets and only got twice as constipated. The first three weeks were perfect. Maybe things will settle down? Now I’m taking psillium every day and living on celery. Rocks.

It is to help sort out glucose, not to lose weight for you. Tip for you .....eat less than normal and do more exercise every day and your weight will go down. There is no magic bullet!

@@bigpun8363 I should have said, I owed you all a FULL response to this issue --- I stopped using Metformin when I discovered being without it due to delay in the refill seemed to directly relate to my Kidneys clearing up a VERY great deal.
I've felt better ever since. However, 3 Months later, a blood test revealed my 3-month blood panel showed my sugar went up 2 full points.
My heart showed strange irregularities so I was scheduled for a number of tests on that, I was usually told by the heart specialists to stop Metformin during the heart tests, some days before, and some days after.
I became very confident with good blood pressure in some Herbal Alternatives that are very highly recommended for Diabetes, and I was feeling very good. But a few months later, my blood sugar, A1c went to 13, only about 8 months after it was a 7-7.5.
This was after more than 10 yrs of very steady rates of 6-7.5, with only very gradual fluctuations, at very small increments BOTH WAYS.
NO SPELLS, ever, of Blood Sugar shock episodes whether too low or too high, at all. And No Sharp Spike ever.
I had to go back on Metformin. 30 days later, with Metformin AND my other new Alternatives, as well, I was back down to 9. It is almost time for me to do one more new blood test.
My doctor and I have found no alternative at this point. She is also borderline Diabetic and is very interested in my "experiments" and the results. But she does seriously talk turkey to me, and I am doing my best to comply with all she tells me, since I can tell she is not only interested in my case, but is evaluating what she learns from my case as to how she can apply promising results in her own case, as well.
THIS IS WHY IT IS VERY WISE to make NO DRASTIC CHANGES without consulting with your doctor, and make sure they are AWARE of all you are doing. It's been so shocking to me to NOT be having any medical "episodes" during all of this, in spite of the drastic events in my blood work and EKGs. I remain stable, medically-speaking. I am 68 yrs old.

@@bigpun8363 PLEASE DO NOT STOP THE METFORMIN WITHOUT DISCUSSING IT WITH YOUR DOCTOR - I stopped it for a while this past year and got in SEVERE TROUBLE with Blood Sugar SPIKES, as I relate in this other very long post.
