Hi, I need to devise a purchase order that is under about $100/£80 for business purposes. I have a legitimate use for this and am already the go-to guy for bump-key lockpicking as many keys have been lost in handovers. What is the best set you can recommend? What I mainly lack now is torsion bars.
I tried to make the shims exactly like that today but they just bent while I tried to shim them in. Was using a coconut water can. Maybe not all cans are alike?
Some coconut oil might have helped? Aluminum is kind of grabby so lube helps it slide. I'd put a bit of thin oil down into the lock before shimming it. Just let some soak in. Metal on metal is friction.
There are plenty that you cannot shim, for example the abus padlocks which use a ballbearing which deadlocks into the shackle. It is not spring loaded and canot be pushed back without the barrell turning
The actual barrel of the padlock is best because that's what it has to fit against. A pencil or the like would help in preparing it to go onto the barrel.
Would it not? Be easier & more symmetrical to draw the shim on the strip of metal beforehand, instead of cutting it freehand, the shim might even work a little smoother, could even smooth the edges of the shape with an Emory board or 300 grit sandpaper so it slips snd turns easier, since it's hobby time, maybe some silicone lube on the shackles or shim, no.. I'm not trying to be factitious, attention to details always makes things better
Don’t forget, sometimes the biggest enemy of a good plan is a perfect plan. In this case, it’s more of a quick dirty trick so the more detailed it is and the longer it takes, it’s no longer quick. Feel free to do you obviously. But for one time use, made on site tools it may not be worth while. If you have the time before hand, it would probably make more sense to make one out of a much stronger alloy.

All in all cans are ranked just below duct tape, WD 40, and zip ties for usefulness.

They used a coke can shim to get my SD/SIM card out of my phone when the tray got stuck in there. Seem like handy things.

This is great, but I am sure a lot more difficult when it is actually in use and you can't manipulate it any which way you want.
That's why he recommends making a few and using them gently. Like anything, it takes practice.
