I bought the Beavercraft spoon carving kit here in Australia. It comes with a Sloyd knife, a short blade carving knife, (not a chip carving knife), a hook knife and a U shaped gouge. It comes in the tool roll with a leather strop and green compound. I have been using it for the last couple of months and it exceeded my expectations. Sharp straight out of the box and easy to maintain. Well worth the money. I also purchased the special curved strop for the hook knife and gouge. Very easy to use and takes away the stress of maintaining curved blades when you are not very good at sharpening like me.
Been carving for a while, but with simple puukos and less effective tooling. Just got two Beavercraft sets. Cant wait to start refining my craft and making higher quality carved pieces. This video really sold me. Thanks Beavercraft and thanks to you sir!
I've been whittling a bit during this pandemic. I started a spoon with some firewood and my pocket knives, but carving the bowl was an issue. Eventually I bought a beavercraft kit. I have made two spoons within weeks from scrap apple wood branches. Now I need to properly sharpen the knives to continue converting my small pile of branches into spoons, and save my fingers from forcing cuts.
@@woodsmansfinest3814 today I started on a double handled spoon, but too many knots in the bowl area have turned it into a sling shot. I'll watch the sharpening videos next...

I recently bought one of their hook knives off eBay. It was very reasonably price $20 with shipping I think? It was very very sharp out of the box. To be honest I didn’t have high hopes because of the price but it is a very nice knife and I love using it! I hope they will make more models soon that have a straighter curve to them. I would recommend them to anyone that likes or wants to start carving!!
I just purchased Beavercraft's SK1S hook knife. the knife did need to be stropped, but it works great, and is nice and sturdy . I liked it so much I purchased their K8A/14 bent gouge an their C1 whittling knife. they should arrive on Sunday. Have you or any of your subscribers ever used their palm tool set? I would love to see a review of those tools as there being used. So far I really like and am very pleased with my Beavercraft hook knife, hook knife strop, and tool roll's. Thank you.
Great point about price point and sharpening. I bought $$ tools straight off and I’ve been worried to death about mucking up the edge, with my beginner sharpening skills. So very very good and important tip!

I couldn't agree more with your review. Several weeks ago I bought the Beavercraft Sloyd out of curiosity. It is all you say it is. Yes, it is a bit thinner than the Mora 106. Then, as you say, the curve has more sweep. It is ideal for slicing. I may be wrong, but I also think the bevel of the scandi grind is at a lower degree than the Mora 106. Each of these factors, in my opinion, make it a more aggressive cutter. My only real question was how would it hold an edge. It seems to be doing fine, though I am carving green cherry for the most part. Mine came with a different handle (I didn't buy the kit version) and a leather sheath. The handle was too thin for my hand, so for a quick fix I added narrow leather slabs to the sides to build them out and then wrapped the whole handle in sinew. Now that I've done it I think I'll keep it like it is. I'm enjoying the sinew grip and new shape. Let me say too that I own dozens of sloyd and other carving knives, including hand forged custom knives with various grinds and steels. I am very impressed with how this $14 dollar knife holds up. I'll be buying several more, perhaps even the hook knife as well. Thanks for highlighting these tools. I hope others with your level of skill and reputation will give them their due.
Thank you for the great comment! Interesting modification and definitely a good way to add some grip. These are also very easy to rehandle. I think they got a great concept without tapping into other great brands markets. For what they are, they are awesome!

Man... That's so sweet of you! I'm sorry to hear that. Spent a lot of time in socal at my aunties. You guys have been through quite something. I wish you the best on your journey and thank you for the support!
I noticed that the better woodcarving knives nearly all come with at least a few bandages. I recall getting a kit with changable blades and a few handles, and it came with more than one full size (at least 100 ea.) box of bandaids and a roll of gauze! Some people wear a cut resistant glove on their non-dominant hand to reduce the band aid consumption.. but properly kept, these things can slice you right open just bumping into it on the table or dropping it a few inches. I have a cover/ cork or sheath for anything that is going to be on an open table or somewhere it could be knocked down or touched accidentally by others. Even some of the lighter ones can still go right through many shoes or pants just falling off a table. I never used all the bandaids, but with enough use, it makes as much sense as including a strop and compounds.
Great review! For Christmas I received the BeaverCraft kit for whittling/carving (my use will mainly be folk art caricatures). They have been awesome thus far. Out of the three knives my go to has been the 2” roughing knife. It hones very nicely, too. I particularly appreciate your insight into the hook knife as I intend to try my hand at carving a spoon in the near future.
Wow that spoon looks great. The review is awesome I’m getting a similar set from beaver craft but it just doesn’t have a hook knife. You just up my mind and it’s good to know my money will be well spent.

Hey Max. Really impressed by this and your recent spate of videos. You do a lovely job of getting at the essence of spooncarving, and the point of what makes for a good tool and what is a reasonable point to start. Thank you for this. I hope you are well.
Bought the set on amazon. The handles are not as nicely finished as yours were in the video. They smell of regular industrial hard oils, the whole package had an unpleasant reek to it. Also of the three tools only the Sloyd could be called sharp. The hook knife as absolutely blunt and I couldn't even cut through paper, no matter how hard I tried. Really a let down. :( EDIT: Had contact with the seller. Great communication. Very friendly and helpful. Immediately sent a replacement and a little excuse gift on top. The replacements were all properly sharp. Overall then: very good customer service, slight tiny problem with quality assurance, but seems to be a great company who care about their customers.

Great video and great advice, especially for complete beginners like me. I purchased a small set of beavercraft spoon carving knives based immediately after watching this review. Thanks so much for sharing your skull. Looking forward to watching more if your videos. And fantastic spoon by the way. Greetings from Scotland. 👍
Is there a rationale to applying the compound to the hair/top side of the leather rather than the flesh side? I've always seen strops (including ones for straight razors) using the flesh side, presumably in part because it holds the compound better. But maybe the top side compresses less? Interested to know your thoughts since you're a leather worker as well.
You got that perfectly right. The hair side still takes the compound of a decent quality rather well but it is way denser and doesn't convex your knife as easily. Great observation! Cheers
Hye man, You got me there.. Always wanted to do this.. One question tho, i want to get a compact set for travelling.. but are these tools enough for an all around woodcarving experience. I would like to make some figures and bowls aswell.. Or what should i get extra?
Please visit my website through the link under the video. I have an entire line of my own tools now that are a more complete and much higher quality setup. Cheers
Just watched your video, first of yours I've seen and first review I've watched. Great review. I'm inspired to start spoon carving (been meaning to get into for a while), though unfortunately I'm quite late. That dame set isn't sold on their site anymore and the closest they do have has different shaped handles and the curved knife looks like a slightly different shape. Maybe another review is due? 😊 I'd love to be able to buy a beginner spoon carving set with the confidence that it has your seal of approval.
Hello, you got me interested into these knives. I'd like to hear you opinion - I'm thinking about this set or flexcut 3 knife starter kit? The bag and leather do not matter too much for me.
Thank you. I've been thinking about making more videos about my dive watches. This one I actually made a video about a while ago. It is a Citizen Eco drive Promaster Diver that isn't built anymore. But their newer version is great and quite affordable. I think I put it into my amazing shop below.
@@woodsmansfinest3814 I recently watched your video where you carved out the spoon in 25 minutes. You caught my attention when you mentioned your new endeavor regarding your new axes, for two reasons. First i was wondering if it was because Liam has had such an extensive backorder? I've been trying to get a craft carved since they were released. Secondly when you mentioned the forge location. I followed your links and immediately recognized one of the patterns immediately. I ordered mine from one of the craftsman in January expecting it soon. I like that landvirke finn though. I may be on the market for one soon. Lol What is your favorite sloyd knife of you don't mind my asking? I'd like to upgrade my tools later, is want a similar set of tools just upgraded. Also something that's attainable without a lengthy wait.
Thank you for reviewing these tools, I have been carving for just a couple of years with only a Mora spoon knife and 120. But received a Beavercraft just like the one in this video as a gift. I’ve been using it since Christmas and have been impressed but see very little on the net about them. As you say they are very solid beginner blades. A question for you, I was planning on getting a Mora 106 for general carving very soon, as I have a 120 would I be better getting the Beavercraft?
I think they are quite different. My favorite knife out there is the mora 105 which I'll do a video about shortly... And how to modify it... So if you wanna stay tuned I think I can answer some questions. I think these tools are great at the beginner level and for courses.
Hi Mr.Max here from land of the sleeping giant. NICE JOB. On the video..Looking for more tools for my kit, very interested. THANKS AGAIN. Bye for now..
I got this after watching your video. It's a nice little set. I also got their 12 inch hook knife. I commented on another video of yours asking about axes. GB wildlife? Liam-Max collaboration? I really want that one! I just can't get on the books, no one can... You said something about waiting a couple weeks because you had something in the works. Any more info on that? I really need a good carving hatchet...
The samples of my new design are in customs and will be with me next week. If there aren't any concerns about the design and I'm happy with it, I'll release a video and Info next week. It will be killer!
@@scotthagens6613 just came back from Wales to find the prototypes had finally arrived. Looking sweet, great balance and weight, good steel and execution. Spoon carving is something im getting into.really liked your video. On my channel i just finished my 2nd spoon. I might get me a set of those carving tools:) happy new year.
I'm afraid I'm going to be a minority opinion on this topic. I own a leather shop and I also teach a lot of spoon carving classes. Most of the tools I've purchased to be used by my students have been Moras, but I do have a few Beavercraft, which I bought because they cost less than Mora. I've found I don't care for the Beavercraft tools. Part of the problem is the shape of the handles. I don't find them comfortable during use. Most of my students who have tried both the Moras and the Beavercrafts tend to agree. Given a choice, my students almost always choose the Mora tools and leave the Beavercraft tools in the tool box. The one exception to my dislike of these tools is the Beavercraft 12-inch hook knife. I use that tool a lot for bowl carving. The longer handle gives me the leverage I need to take good cuts deep down inside a bowl or kuksa. In my mind, the main advantage of Beavercraft tools is their low price. They allow new spoon carvers to get into the craft without spending a lot of money, which is a good thing. I believe, though, most people will upgrade to better tools as their skill levels progress.
That's exactely what i was saying... You get a set for the price of one Mora... Not everyone out there can afford 80 or 90 dollars to try out a hobby. Totally needless to say that Moras are better. I think I am a very strong advocate on my channel for highend tools. But that isn't what we are Talking about... We are Talking about a 45 dollars set that comes in a tool roll, with a leather strop and will teach you sharpening etc if you don't have the money to spend. That's all. We all know the handles aren't ideal etc. That's why I say in the video, they are what they are not more but also not less.
Stameski-Stryi is the parent company of Beavercraft if any of you are looking for more tools like this. They have hundreds of tools to choose from at reasonable cost, mostly chisels, gouges and chip-carving tools. They are based in Stryi, Ukraine, just south of Lviv. Www.stameski.com.ua

@@BeaverCraftTools Thanks! I'll fix my post. Where ARE you based out of? I assumed Stryii because your tools look so similar in form and construction...
I have this set in my cart at amazon for later. Meantime, i got the same set from someone else and the handles are unfinished. How should I best finish them? Just mineral oil or whats best? Should they be coated like with varathane or other?
I am just getting started. I have the beaver craft set amd a draw knife from them. I have a block of wood made for a spoon. I find it hard to slice of pieces. Any advice ?

Great video! What would you consider the best option, to buy this kit or to buy some mora knifes? I prefer carving not only spoons, but also other things. Many thanks from Sweden!🙌
This is really just for the total beginner on a budget. If you are in Sweden, mora is way cheaper than anywhere else in the world and I'd go mora 105 and some of the new hooks. If you have the budget find my line of tools on www.woodsmansfinest.net/shop-4
”Bαzοmο Tdy Plαn” (Google it), is a very detailed woodworking book! It breaks everything down, utilizing words, drawings, real images, and different diagrams. It is unbelievably informative and helps me feel like I could help my brother while we make our furniture together. .
Not to offend anyone especially not the video creator, but what thus video says to me is there's no point in spending a lot of money of these knives from expensive knife makers. I've looked at tons of websites where the hook knife alone costs as much as the beaver craft entire carving set which comes with a carrying roll, a strop and compound. I'm already pretty good at sharpening and modifying bevels as well from practicing on my bushcraft knives. So I guess my question is, again not trying to offend, what is the point of paying hundreds of dollars on one or 2 knives when I can get this entire beaver craft set for the price of one knife?
I'm a custom knife maker and designer myself. These knives are in design, blade steel and overall quality not even in the same universe as high end carving knives. This is a starter set for people on a budget. Nothing more.
@Woodsmans Finest I understand things can be made of better materials and with hand made quality, but after watching this video of you making a nice spoon with this set, how much better do the knives need to be and why?
@@atomicpsych0 don't get me wrong... You got a real question but if you aren't open for the answer, what's the point. So, in other words, more expensive tools are that much better and were made by a human. If that doesn't have value to you, they aren't for you and you aren't my customer. Pretty simple. I can carve with those tools because I did this full time for a decade. Better tools will support the learning curve. Cheap tools are still useable but won't get you to your potential. They will fail in tough woods. They won't take as fine of an edge because of the heat treat cycles. They won't be as comfy to use and as efficient. Like I said, they aren't as good. Until you have not tried a finely made and tuned high end tool, you won't know.
@Woodsmans Finest as I said in my first comment, my intention wasn't to offend. I've looked at your tools and they look outstanding. I especially like your axes. I didn't think my post made me seem closed minded to the answer of the question I asked but if it seemed that way I apologize. I was simply looking for a deeper insight to your video. I already own this beavercraft set and have made a couple spoons. The last of which came out very nice. I'm particularly interested in a better hook knife as it seems to be the hardest part of making the spoon to me. But I have watched several videos that go back and forth about something like beaver craft as opposed to high end. I don't make spoons for a living, just as a hobby while I'm in the field doing training. After watching this and some of your other videos it's much easier for me to justify buying your lightweight wayfaring axe over some of the hook or sloyd knives. I'd like to have it all but financially it's not practical
This is just a commercial. Beaver craft are certainly not ethically produced. They’ve copied other designs and sell them for knock-down prices as no R&D investment. Any experienced spoon carver will tell you how bad the hook knife is & mora have got rid of the stabbing point on hook knife now as realise it is a bad idea.
sorry but that background track makes me want to end it all. so depressing and sad. Fuck me I have to listen to something more upbeat b4 I start working my arm like a maple spoon sheesh!
Trouble is, now in 2023, Beavercraft tools are no longer so affordable. They come from Ukraine and their steel industry has been almost destroyed, courtesy of Vladimir Putin.

Very nice! I followed you here from Instagram..
I have their curved gouge and kuksa hook knife, both great tools, nice to see some of their other tools reviewed
Those are coming up too... Lol... I'll get them covered in a Kuksa video some day. Just so many tools lined up. Glad you liked the video though!
@@woodsmansfinest3814 look forward to seeing and hearing what you think of them :) yup always enjoy your videos, you and a couple of others have been a massive help learning about green wood carving, so a genuine thanks ;)
Just realized the set I have is Beaver Creek. It was very affordable and it does hold up. Havent had any issues at all.
Amazing :-) Greetings From Hungary ( Nationalpark - Őrség )
Great video and great advice, especially for complete beginners like me. I purchased a small set of beavercraft spoon carving knives based immediately after watching this review. Thanks so much for sharing your skull. Looking forward to watching more if your videos. And fantastic spoon by the way. Greetings from Scotland. 👍
Great video, you've made my mind up about this set, and I'll be asking for it for Xmas! Thanks mate.
That's awesome. Cheers mate
Very nice video! I enjoyed your review on the tools. I will definitely recommend these for new beginner carvers I may come across. Thank you
Thank you! Every share and link use helps! Cheers
with cutter is good too
Is there a rationale to applying the compound to the hair/top side of the leather rather than the flesh side? I've always seen strops (including ones for straight razors) using the flesh side, presumably in part because it holds the compound better. But maybe the top side compresses less? Interested to know your thoughts since you're a leather worker as well.
You got that perfectly right. The hair side still takes the compound of a decent quality rather well but it is way denser and doesn't convex your knife as easily. Great observation! Cheers
An awesome kit i just got me one
Awesome mate. Have a good time getting to know it
Hye man,
You got me there..
I prefer this one overall.
@@woodsmansfinest3814 thanks man, they really seem to be great. I'll order as soon as I decide which kid to buy.
I'm wanting to start wood carving and I'm wondering if this kit is just for making spoons, bowls, etc?

Oh, that’s another time I’m happy to live in Kyiv
I hear ya!
What is your watch brand I really like it
Thank you. I've been thinking about making more videos about my dive watches. This one I actually made a video about a while ago. It is a Citizen Eco drive Promaster Diver that isn't built anymore. But their newer version is great and quite affordable. I think I put it into my amazing shop below.
I think I'll be purchasing one of these kits soon. Thanks for the review. What axe are you using in this video?
It is definitely a good bang for the buck still. That one is a landvirke finn. A very ancient design I use as canoeing/hunting/wilderness hatchet.
Lol
What is your favorite sloyd knife of you don't mind my asking? I'd like to upgrade my tools later, is want a similar set of tools just upgraded. Also something that's attainable without a lengthy wait.
@@robertcesena6329 check out my video on the mora 105
Great video.
Woodsmans Finest sounds interesting, is the 105 blade identical to 106, just a different handle?
@@MS-watch-YT ever so slightly shorter... Maybe 5mm. Different handle... Customizeable. Got it in my shop you can reach through my link. Cheers
Hi Mr.Max here from land of the sleeping giant. NICE JOB. On the video..Looking for more tools for my kit, very interested. THANKS AGAIN. Bye for now..

As much as I wanna help... English is obviously the language I speak in the video...
This is probably a dumb question, but could this kit be used to carve mugs and/or bowls?
Of course but I'd recommend you checking out my tool line for that as I'd upgrade.

Thank you so much for the quick response. I'll be patient... it'll be hard, but, I'll wait.
@@scotthagens6613 thank you for waiting. People wanted another axe option... I made one.
Any news? I'm ready when you are!
@@scotthagens6613 just came back from Wales to find the prototypes had finally arrived. Looking sweet, great balance and weight, good steel and execution. There are just a few changed on the handle and some details that need to be changed but I am optimistic to be on the finishing straight... I apologize for the long wait, but when it comes to products and semi production types manufacturing little steps take a little while to a product I want to put my name on. Not much longer. Cheers
Spoon carving is something im getting into.really liked your video. On my channel i just finished my 2nd spoon. I might get me a set of those carving tools:) happy new year.
Glad I could be of service.
Wich wood do you use for spoon carving?
Green hardwoods. I got a long video about that on my channel.
Simplemente perfecto....
Muchas Gracias!
I'm looking at this kit, would you still recommend it 2 years later?

What’s the name of that expensive hook knife you were talking about?
I am just getting started. I have the beaver craft set amd a draw knife from them. I have a block of wood made for a spoon. I find it hard to slice of pieces. Any advice ?
If a piece won't chip off, you can sharply turn the knife 90 degrees to pop it off.

My kit came with a walnut spoon blank but the hook knife was not very good.
There are many copies out there. Hope you got the original.

@@atomicpsych0 well... If you ask that question, you aren't there yet. If you don't wanna spend money on higher quality, don't. As simple as that.
You are right. I made that video a long time ago and will take it down. Stopped working with them shortly after because of design theft.
it gives me so much anxiety when ever he cuts so close to his hand
You should try carving.
Anxiety sucks.
