"The beauty of "gouache" is you can make all the mess you want and like watercolors, comes off with a smile instead of anger."- Lynn Lindsay i have the 48 count and they are awesome.Thank you for this wonderful and sweet presentation.👍😀👌❤
I painted the "roof" of the cover with white acrylic and discarded the free palette. Now I have no more troubles with fresh paint streaks where I do my mixing. :)
Here's a thought, you could put wax paper the same size over the paint before putting the pallet on top to close it. Then it will dry but not on your pallet.
I splash my himi set with some vinegar once in a while so it does't develop mold. It has worked great for me, and has no affected the quality of the paint at all.
The vinegar might alter the acid/ph level of the paint and cause the substrate you paint on to go brittle. Spritzing with rubbing alcohol would be another option to kill bacteria and prevent mold.
Oh dear, I liked the 18 but wasn't fond of the non-white pallette, and it seemed like people had trouble mixing lighter skin colors. This has white pallette, brushes, and a peachy color. I know lot of people said they ran out of both whites, the primaries and maybe black in the other set and no way to reorder just one color, from them anyway unless you're in an asian country. Seems like HIMI listened to the complaints and fixed it. Darn it!! I didn't even know about these
Thank you, Lindsay. I'm gonna put this on my wish list. The palette is really nice, plus not too expensive to let my teen grandkids paint whenever they want to. (and do they ever.)
I have my set of 24 in a pink box that came with pink brushes. I love pink! I did not know until you said it that the brushes from the US and the rest of the world would be different. It makes sense though as I believe knitting needles and crochet hooks also go by different sizes. I am hoping to keep my paints wet and am thinking about not tearing of the top of each paint and just have it as open as I need it to be to use. I always learn something from watching you. Thank you.
Hey @Thefrugalcrafter: I recently sold my first drawing.. Totally unexpected happening. Just in case that's not a fluke, I would like to know how a professional artist packages drawings, paintings, etc for shipping.
Ir's been a while since you did this video. It's now March 2021. I would love to know if your Himi gouche is still usable? And does spritizing it still work if they've dried up? I haven't purchased these. But love my Kuratake Gansai Tambi paints.
Forbidden snack 👀 Anyway, they used to offer hog bristles for these goauche paints because chinese art students tend to use this like an oil paint and use thick amounts, rather than as opaque watercolors.
They also have a 56 set! Can you review them as well? Thank you for your videos! I've been a subscriber for a few years now and they're very helpful!! ❤️
Hi Lindsay! Finally, I was able to order this gouache set! I got a lot of my wish list items this month- completely blew my budget but ya know what? I've wanted this set since I saw this video...8 months ago lol. I did some research on the other sets you've shown as well, and decided this would be great for me to start with for the color variety and I got it at a great price. If you don't mind a couple of newbie questions, I've not opened the pots and swatched out my colors yet- because I'm worried about the long-term storage. As I'm in a very humid/damp environment, I should let them dry out because I don't want them to go moldy. So...stupid question, but should I just leave the palette out and exposed to the air like with watercolor paints from a tube into a pan? I was reading something about that- though I can't find the article anymore to share, but it said I can leave it out to dry but only the top third actually dries, underneath stays wet and they won't dry properly like watercolor paints do from tube to pan. Did you see this happen with your Himi set? Did they remain wet underneath or did they fully dry? I realize I get a bit silly with new supplies, and I get scared to wreck them. I appreciate your help, thanks Lindsay!
You can do either. I let my first set dry out and it rewet fine but my others I leave liquid and now I am used to that I prefer it. As long as you don't get contaminants in the paint you don't have to worry about mold. I accidentally got pond water in a paint set once so I sprayed it with alcohol and let it dry open and it was fine. Enjoy them!
Some sellers sell refills on shopee and lazada for around 50 PHP (~ 1 USD). Not sure if they also ship to countries outside of the Philippines, though.
I’m thinking of getting this for my best friend’s 17th. They were telling me they liked the look of it and would want to try it a few weeks ago so hopefully they don’t get it them-self before I can get it for them
Been struggling getting gouache paint with believable colors. In your opinion, Lindsay are these colors natural and mix well to get other colors? Thanks so much.
What type of brushes do you use for gouache? Acrylic or watercolor? And is there a certain branof brushes you prefer? I am getting this set for some projects I planned this summer and I need more coloring items!
I like golden talkon brushes like royal Langnickle zen or mental all media brushes. You want a firmer brush than the softer brushes you use for watercolor.
Update: the paints themselves aren't the best, they feel more like poster paint to me and layering is kinda bad. However the palette itself is wonderful for my tubes of Holbein and Winsor and Newton gouache. The jelly cups come with lids to help keep the paint from drying out and the inside lid is mint so spraying it white would work best
Hi Lindsay. I know this post is old but I am a new user of gouache and have purchased a large set of Himi. Are you aware of any updates in the source of refills for the jelly cups? Thanks.
I'm curious how to care for these. They came in an airtight container. But it won't close up tightly with tops on. Also, how to keep them from mold or mildew. Do you have tips for that?
I bought this set. The lid was warped and didn’t seal up. The jelly cups were to tall and I am afraid to open them up, because they will all dry up if the lid won’t seal.
It's really forgiving. I like Strathmore mixed media paper (toned tan is my fave) but any watercolor paper us good too and it does well ob the cheap stuff or paper where the sizing has gone bad so if you have any watercolor paper kicking around that you don't like use that. It will work fine.
I found this on eBay and had a voucher so I got it for £17! I'm very new to painting so I was gonna wait before venturing out to gouache but I had a voucher and now I'm too excited
These are actually marketed towards art school students! There’s an insane amount of paintings you must produce in order to either get into the school or pass it I believe. I feel like that may be why China now have a variety of quality brands that are also cheap.
@@artbymaria428 this one I have 24 too but this one looks slightly bigger sized even though it's 30 ml, like I guess there's two sizes, one for brushes and one without. I don't have the brushes either, never knew they had that one
Some reviews on amazon said that the paint dries and crack and some people are unable to re-hydrate them. What has been your experience after months of having this set?
That's such a pity, sorry to hear that. But next time actually when it dries out just spray it with water and let it sit for a few minutes and it'll reactivate and return to how it is. The perks of having gouache they reactivate with water!

Those colours look like edible - the brown one looks disconcertingly similar to Nutella! 🤣
Or chocolate pudding!
I just found a set of Lukas 12 colors on sale for $9.59 marked down from about $27 at Jerry’s Artarama. Hope I like them.
😂 😂 😂 😂
I love the 18 set because it makes me less precious about the paint, then say my Winsor and Newton gouache, and it's nice and easy to use at my desk.
Your art work is stunning. I love seeing your watercolor paintings. All your work is fantastic!
Just ordered the 18 colour this morning. Can't wait to try it.
how is it??:) im debating between the 24 or the 18 set because of the two whites in the 18 might be useful
Ohhh so excited for this video as I'm super interested in this set!

HIMI has a set now, with a mildew mist preventer.
Ugg! Now I want this! So cute! Do I need it? No....but, WANT!!!!!
Why not add some clingwrap to the top of the gouache so it doesn't get on the palette.
wont it get on the cling wrap then? i have this and i removed the palette instead
I hope you demo a painting with the HIMI 24 set. You paint so beautifully!
Your painting is fabulous!
i just got this set today for my birthday and this really helped thank you!
Going to get this for my daughter as part of her Christmas present.
