  • One of the most frustrating things in the workshop is DUST. It's everywhere, and a lack of dust collection makes it 10 times worse. In this video, I'll show you exactly how I assembled a DIY vacuum adapter for dust collection with my DeWalt Random Orbital Sander. All you need is a few cheap parts from the store and you'll be good to go!
    For reference, I have a Ridgid Shop Vac with a 2.5" hose (standard factory hose)
    Parts:
    1 1/2" x 1 1/4" Fernco Flexible Coupling

    1 1/2" 90 Degree PVC Street Elbow

    Ridgid 2.5" adapter

    That elbow has one male end (the smaller end called a spigot) and one female end (the larger end called a socket).

    Awesome! I have this exact Dewalt sander, so I’ll try this. Very helpful! BTW, I love the Ephesians quote! God bless you, brother in Christ. 🙏🏼✝️🕊️

      I think what is confusing is he used both ends as "males".

    If my shop vac has a 1 1/4” hose, do I do the same thing? If not, what would I change? Thank you.

      @augustpineworkshop  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Unfortunately I’m not quite sure, but I don’t think that this same setup would work. My recommendation would be to still connect the rubber coupling to the sander and see if you can find one that would fit directly with the 1 1/4” hose connection on the other end (where the rubber coupling would go on the outside of the hose connection). Sorry I can’t provide a definitive answer!

    Do you turn it on all the time?

    • @augustpineworkshop
      @augustpineworkshop  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I usually keep the vacuum running the entire time while using the sander.

    2:22 what Dewalt orbital sander do you recommend?

    • @augustpineworkshop
      @augustpineworkshop  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have the DWE6423 and I really like it! The only thing I may consider in the future is a cordless model, but performance-wise I have never had any issues with this one. I definitely also recommend getting a variable-speed model and not a single speed (such as the DWE6421). It’s slightly more expensive, but the ability to change the speed is really nice.

    What the heck? Don’t dewalt supply an adaptor?

    • @augustpineworkshop
      @augustpineworkshop  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not included with the product. They do sell an accessory, but it’s pretty expensive and seems to be incompatible with many DeWalt products (and I couldn’t find an exact product list of compatible sanders). This was a cheaper and easier solution for me.

      I bough the adapter and while it fits it’s not snug and pops off the hose all of the time. I still end up duct taping it

    Why not just use the Fernco?

    • @augustpineworkshop
      @augustpineworkshop  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      For my vacuum, the Fernco alone won’t connect to the shop vac hose directly based on the size. But even if I were to get one that would fit with the correct size, I wanted to avoid having the Fernco directly attached so it would be easier to connect/disconnect and wouldn’t require loosening the clamp every time.

    You've added several ounces, and a hose that's almost as big as the sander is. Truly not worth the extra work.
    The biggest issue, an seems NO one has addressed this, is the LACK of uniformity among power tool manufactures and the dust collection industry, mainly due to them having their pride shoved up their asses. Even the DeWalt adapter that they sell that is "supposed" to work with this sander, AND a 1 1/4" shopvac, doesn't work! The dust bag it comes with is 1-3/4 inches, and NO SHOP VAC has a hose that is that size. You could by a $800 Festool shopvac, but really? EIGHT hundred? That's like buying Grand Ma a Maserati, just to go to the grocery store and back once a week.

      @augustpineworkshop  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah it’s definitely a little bulky, but unfortunately this has been the best budget setup that I could find easily. I totally agree that the lack of uniformity is unbelievable. When I was trying to figure out how to make this work (and also looking into some other dust collection setup stuff) I couldn’t believe how many different sizes and configurations there are.
