Love your commentary! Skye girl here that's lived in Oz for the last 20 yrs. Can't wait to get back home next year. I miss the dreary cold dark beautiful winters😂 No place on earth that can beat Skye! So glad you love my home, and so right about "the bloody tourists" 😂😂❤❤❤

My husband is Scottish, and I grew up in Texas and lived in Arizona the past 5 years. My health actually gets way better in cold weather, I often faint when it's warm. When we were on Skye I could actually hike without passing out from the heat, even in the wind and the rain. My friends in the desert think I'm crazy for wanting to live in the cold and the rain 🤣

Good for you and remember that you don't need their approval. I know it's easier said than done. I didn't mean to be the typical instantaneous American know it all type about it, it's just that I know how you feel. My spouse is from Scotland and I am an American. Our first venture out there failed many years ago. We have everything we need here in Virginia but something is missing. It is amazing how I can not see see someone for many years here but if you talk about moving there they freak out and suddenly have your best interests in mind. I can be 10 State
s away and never be able to connect but talk about moving abroad and they instantly know what is best for you.

Thank goodness for your honesty!! We are a mid 50’s couple and live on the beautiful little island of Anglesey in North Wales, we are plagued with tourists also 😡. We have been thinking of selling up and moving to Skye . The thought of not living on a tiny island is unbearable, however the thought of such long winters is a major downer as I love going out fishing on my kayak & playing golf .. Ah well, it was a nice thought but we will keep looking 🤚🤚🤚🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Oh I’ve never been to wales, let alone it’s islands! Will need to visit!
My husband and I live in Glasgow and love Skye, and wanted to move one day but were also nervous of the harsh winters. We just visited Arran though for our anniversary and loved it! So think we will be changing our mind! Doesn’t have a bridge so more remote, but there’s regular ferries and not far from Glasgow on the other side :)

I'm also from down south and my partner who's Scottish and I have stayed in Dornie which I'm sure you know of four times in the past and I'm pretty sure that we visited Skye on all four occasions. I now trade the financial markets professionally and I'm aware that I'll need to factor in the power cuts, but it's my dream once I've generated enough wealth to buy a home on the Western Isles and I honestly don't mind where. I've been to quite few countries around the world, but as soon as my partner and I have driven to Dornie and the mountains slowly get bigger and bigger the spectacular beauty of the place immediately hits me like a ton of bricks, I feel quite emotional and nostalgic and I'm reminded why I want to live in this part of the world. We currently live in Arbroath on the east coast of Scotland just a fifteen minute walk from the North Sea so we're used to leaving the house and finding that one of our conifer trees has been lifted out of the ground by the coastal winds and I'm used to having to find an alternative route around centuries old trees which have been uprooted by them whilst I'm out walking my dog, but I absolutely love the place and I really enjoy my own company and being able to escape noise and traffic too and I always have, but thanks for the education. I definitely learned one or two things from this video which is why I've been searching for videos about life on the Western Isles.

Hello from the Faroe Islands! 🇫🇴
Population 12. Winter lasts 10½months and we have 3hrs of light per day in December.
155mph wind last month. 1½m snow isn't unusual. Digging out a 2m high snow drift in front of the door to the sheep barn in fun
No bridge connecting us so we do have to take a ferry. No shops or businesses of any kind. Just a post office.
I've cried the first time i felt the sun in Spring.
It took 6 months to fix our village street lights. 6 months!!!

Real question, skye time, does that mean you need to be good at planning? Also, weather wise, is it that much different from the west of scotland/glasgow? Or is it just a big difference from England? I moved from Wales to Glasgow and the weather change was stark, so does it get a lot more or is it a much of a muchness by the time you're up here?

    • @roderickmathison5245
      @roderickmathison5245 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It’s a little bit darker & colder in Autumn/Winter than say Glasgow but not much (windier though). She’s right about snow, though. More chance of seeing snow on Rannoch Moor (Glen Coe), 65 miles north of Anniesland, Glasgow on a winters day than in most of Skye. Snow depends on altitude as well as latitude (think of Switzerland!), and most people in the NW Highlands live down at sea level, more or less...

Skye time sometimes needs forward planning, but it mostly just seems to require patience. Things get done, but at a much slower pace than where I lived previously. It was hard to get used to at first but now I'm just as bad for it as everyone else! And Roderick is spot on about the weather, it's just a bit more exposed but you're like me in where you've moved from and to, so I reckon for us is just a bigger difference from south to north :)

To be honest, I was expecting you talking about two most important things that I would consider before moving in: jobs and people. And I`m talking of pre-Covid times. What can you do there for a living? The answer is not so simple if you don't have specific profession or you are not skilful craftsman. People...I heart some stories about attitude towards incomers, specially from England (that could be linked to clearings). But imagine: you have many, you will secure a job, you will buy house of dreams in Skye...and the only neighbour in radius of lets say 250 metres would not talk to you, only becaue you not an islander. How you made it?
I can understand Sky Time thing, very similar to Southern European mañana - what you can do today, do tomorrow.
With tourists its like havin glass of water hal empty or half full. You love them and hate them in same moment. When I been on Sky in March 2019 nearly all passing bays were busy with parking cars as people just stopped to make photo of a sheep. I would like to see more videos of your how is life on Skye...been on Raasay too, loved it.

    • @being_liv
      @being_liv  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

There's a lot of variety of skilled people here who all make a living, and then of course there's tourism and usual jobs such a retail etc. It's not always easy though that's for sure. I can definitely see how Skye time would be similar - there's never any rush here :) and I plan on making more videos about life on Skye this year, once I've got enough time to put into them :)

It’s hard in the sense that it’s so far. We moved over 700 miles, we had our furniture in a removals lorry which took 2 days to get up to Skye and then we had our essentials in the car with us. It was exhausting to be honest. Getting work year round is tough and the wages here are below the national average but things like food are more expensive. The flip side of that is that fuel, public transport, and some other amenities are cheaper. I’m thinking of making a part 2 of this video actually because the cost of living here is a strange juggling act and I think I could explain it better ‘in person’ rather than text!

The place was rammed...everywhere you went! It was like being in a mainland city! Worse actually as the shops supermarkets, cafes Etc are small places rammed full of people...totally bumping into people every few seconds some of the time! Can fully understand the locals resenting the invasion! I hated it...so many people trailing up and down beauty spots like ants in a line! Really spoiled the feeling of remoteness and the beauty of it! ( no I sadly didn't get to see these beautiful spots was too much for me too join a trail of people) Have spent many years visiting the Isles of the Hebrides and have never experienced anything like the tourist invasion on Skye 😥

I’ve been to Skye, lived in Scotland and Vancouver island, there are similarities, but I would say the north island is the best comparison. You can get virtually anything south of Nanaimo. Van isle weather is way better too.

I have spent half my life in various parts of Scotland. Spend quite a bit of time around the north west and on Skye for holidays, wild camping, walking etc..
We are finally moving up that way full time this year. Going to be amazing. After travelling and working all over the UK and the world there just aren’t many places I love as much as Skye.
I know what you mean with the tourists through. Having lived for some years in a little tourist village in cornwall the summers were hell. Not being able to park at your house because there are 10 motorhomes and having a full shop to carry across the village, well it resulted in a lot of defrosted food and was quite frustrating lol
Maybe see you in a few months when we get there.

If you ever look at the weather on TV sky always seems to be Warner than Edinburgh. Its probably the fact you have the gulf stream running up there. Hence no snow. But saying that the while of Scotland hardly gets any snow. Its like hens teeth. Apart from the high mountains.

People like to throw around the word "remote," but what makes a place truly "remote?" Is it the sparse population, is it the limited access via transportation, limited commerce, distance from a large city, etc.? I live in Wyoming (USA), a landlocked state with few people and similar observations/comments that you've made here. It is often considered remote as well.

You are very funny. And I like the way you tell it how it is. Maybe a little on the dark side lol like Malifisant I just love Malifisant she was not evil at all. I have a friend that go to the North of Scotland mixers with the locals dressed in gowns dancing around fire's. They love nature Vegans. Are you a friendly pagan. Do people go missing in Scotland as when I was in Oban there were pictures everywhere off people going missing they find there cars vans but not the people. It's a little scary in a way. What do you think and if you think I am being silly just let me know my friend tells me don't go to the North of Scotland. I apologise if I talk silly but I do have a disability and my friend I a very clever person and tells me the truth. I love watching you videos brilliant you remind me off Malifisant in a good way. 😘🖤.

Only thing that stops me wanting to live on Skye is that I can no longer handle the cold. Skye Time sounds good to me - thing are done when they're done! Inconsiderate people blocking roads are a real bugbear for me so that would probably be a problem as well but to be honest that seems to be getting more common everywhere in the UK these days. I remember visiting Skye before the bridge was built and spending a great evening in a pub only to miss the last ferry back. Not a problem - curl up and spent the night in the public toilets. Loved the people and their attitude to life 😁

Hey, I went on Skye Island back in February ! As a french southerner from Côte d'Azur, that was something else indeed. It was really really cold out there, strongest wind I've ever seen, frozen rain and a fair amount of snow (did we get lucky on that ? Because snowy landscapes were amazing, got many beautiful photographs). We didn't stay long, about three days because it was a stop in a whole Scotland road trip but we sure enjoyed it a lot. Thanks for your nice video, it reminded me this nice trip that now seems to be part of another lost world since the quarantine in march :)

If you got snow that stuck around you were pretty lucky! The mountains are always snow capped in winter but we hardly ever get it at sea level. I'm so glad you were able to enjoy it despite the weather though!

Been to Skye many times, understand you views on tourists. Love being in a conversation with people living on Skye, normally in a pub and being classed as a visitor. Something I've experienced all over the Highlands and Islands. Must be frustrating when you see "free delivery" only to find the delivery cost, will be more than the item. Longing to have my week in the summer and week in early winter again. Tapadh leat from Stoke on Trent.

Skye hasn’t been the same for 20 plus years. Too many holiday makers and pretentious modern houses, major mismanagement of the tourism industry. The very wild soul seems to have been lost and is now a bucket listed, hipster island.

A bit of perspective needed I think. Sure Skye is remote compared to large towns/cities - quite obviously
However as stated you are connected by a bridge to the main big island - although still a long/slow drive to larger towns
Remote in UK terms would be living on the Shetlands/Orkneys off the north coast of Scotland or the Hebrides - certainly the Outer Hebrides especially. All a ferry ride away from the mainland or flight for some islands.

Been to SKYe for visit in 2000, me MA was organising the Celtic Tour we went on in an Old Ford van. Luved the tour I was given of a local Shed, by a man who had collected things that had washed up on shore. Well worth the quid I gave him ;). You seemed very cute to me as well....liked yr sense of perspective. Im 60 and looking for a place to retire.
