Best review I've seen on TH-cam. Taylormade have clearly stated the new M2 isn't aimed at current M2 owners it is aimed for people thinking of getting into the M2 market and is simply just an updated model. You hit the nail on the head, like any other business, golf companies are in competition and new models of product is annually isn't anything out of the ordinary. Great work Mark.
Love the way you are testing these clubs now with the closed or dry data and on-course.The pro tracer really illustrates how they are performing side by side.Awesome.
Mark, I appreciate the way you emphasized at the end that it isn't intended that you would replace an "old" M2 with a new one. They're looking for people who haven't purchased a new driver in 5 years or so. They're also trying to keep up with the likes of Callaway, King Cobra, and such. I have a decent eye for my drives so I tend to just buy the old model with the same shaft and then dial in the launch and perceived spin on the range. I care very little about launch monitor data because I always end up trying to smash it and it doesn't reflect my on-course performance. Anyways, I've rambled on enough, well done as usual Marcus. Give El Capitan some man-love for me and the rest of the Army!!! #LockeyArmy. #LockeyVsThermoNuclearDevice.
Nice one bruh. At last someone has finally said what I've been saying. TM are a business and can't survive on bringing new clubs out every 5 years. They are not asking those with last year's model to go to this year's, they are targeting those who've not had a new driver for 5/10 years. We don't all change clubs at the same time do we. Another great club review, keep up the great work bruh!
Mark Crossfield hey mark great vid loving the On course comparison, I agree there's not much between them but doesn't it slightly open and close the face when you adjust loft on the neck so therefore adjusting peak height etc... Let me know your thoughts keep up the good work
Superb review Mark, love the static shot tracer to show how the second club/shot compares. Interested to see that when you review different makes and models against each other, different flights and trajectory. Old M2 still in the bag.
Another great review Mark. I think you are spot on with you comments re: old v new. People seem to get awfully worked up over golf equipment manufacturers releasing updates to their equipment each year. If golf equipment companies want to remain competitive they must stay current with technology and trends. These enhancement are generally minor tweaks so it's doubtful you would notice a significant difference from year to year. Therefore, unless you have money burning a hole in your pocket (or are fortunate enough to have access to free equipment!) it doesn't make sense to upgrade every time they release a new version. However, over time, these incremental enhancements will likely result in a noticeably improved product. It's much the same as an auto maker refreshing their model lineup every year with minor enhancements, trim changes, and updates. Ten years ago the Honda Accord was a great car, and likely saw modest improvements the following model year. However, when compared against the current model year, the effects of ongoing improvements in technology and performance are much more evident.
I personally like the look and coloring of the old one but the thinner white line on the top is nicer on the new one...for my money I'm going with the slightly used or even new "older" model. Great head to head video Mark!
Thanks for an awesome review. Love the on-course testing and graphics. Commentary-wise, I think this is my favorite review of yours ever. Very thoughtful comments/recommendations.
Why do you need to go to a Pro Shop who only stock the latest clubs for a custom fit? I go to an independent club fitter who will fit any head to any shaft, even if the heads are like 3 years old. The last place you want to get a custom fit is somewhere like American Golf they literally have no idea what they're doing.
Great impartial review Mark. Looks as though the New model has a lower ball flight was that the case? Couldn't hear any distinguishable sound difference either on the video what was it like on course?
great video and great points at the end about custom fit versus last year's club being harder to custom fit. you could always buy the same shaft you've been using and try that in the new head though.
Fantastic review, really refreshing. Would love you to go back through the models R1 / burner to see how far back on models where you start to notice a difference.
I have to say that your videos are still the best available on here, I do watch other peoples stuff but most of it seems to be about the new gear being the best thing since sliced bread. Just proves you can't beat a bit of honesty to say that for all the marketing bs that its the same club as last year in new clothes. It would be interesting to see you go back through the TM timeline and maybe hit a Burner against the new M2 and maybe something in between like a burner 2.0 or rocketballz to hopefully show where there might of been some more obvious progress
Great job, love the on course comparison with shot tracer. Only suggestion I could make was adding hit tape to your club head or something similar to show contact made. Thanks for the great vids.
I 100% like and trust your reviews Mr Crossfield. Your NOT a 300yrd + driver of the ball like others on here but cover more for the average golfer, this is Great... You just need a Chipping/Pitching lesson from Couch Lockie.. ( IS HE A PRO :-)) Keep it going Mark..
Old M2 by 5 yards. That's a win for me. Got custom fit for mine a few weeks ago at half the price of new club. Looks great and feels great. Love these reviews Mark!
I got custom fitted last year when the M2 came out and my word what a driver it is,I will not be looking to change for the new M2 and I will not be looking to change for a couple more years. It will be interesting to see where club manufacturers will go with the driver over the next few years. Once a Mark a great on the course head to head test
great review mark. I haven't tried the new m2 yet but hated the 2016 model the sound was awful and couldn't tell where on the face I was hitting the ball if they have fixed that I might change the 915
I have pre ordered the new M2 for the sole reason that I wasn't able to order the old one with my custom specs. I understood the importance of custom fitting so was willing to pay premium to get the right club for me.
Love the comparison. Would like to see "old M1" vs. "new M2", because that is an interesting upgrade path since the "old M2" launched a lot later than the "old M1", thus many didn't have the chance to compare them side by side.
Yeah, I wasn't expecting any difference. Besides the custom fit thing, I think the only things that could make one choose one over the other is the looks and the sound because they definitely won't be seeing vastly different performance.
I love the on course testing, sadly here in the States very few stores allow you to take clubs out to test like that. It didn't always used to be that way but with the advent of launch monitors and hitting bays they have all but phased it out. I don't like hitting off mats, especially when it comes to irons, so it's becoming more difficult to get a real feel of what the club will do in real gaming situations. Keep up the good work.
Just picked up a 2016 M2 in excellent condition on eBay for $170. From what I’ve seen on YT it’s stills beats out the M4 and M6 and is just a few yards behind the SIM2 Max. 5 years old and still can hang. Tried looking for a 2016 M2 3 wood. So many are abused, chipped paint and tremendous face wear, so I found a SIM Max 3 wood in excellent condition, should be delivered by next week. Has a Project X Evenflow Riptide 6.0 regular flex. Recovering from rotator cuff shoulder and lost about 20 mph (was 100 mph pre-surgery which I will gain back. I was able to find an excellent 2016 M2 5 wood (18 deg), haven’t hit it yet either but hopefully it’s as great as the driver.
I just bought the new M2. I tried the new and the old one. I hit the new one 10 yard further most of the time. However, my current Driver was almost 10 years old, so I was looking to upgrade.
Great vid. On course is the reality and I appreciate the honest feedback. Manufacturers are limited to what they can do due to regulations, so no one is going to produce a club that delivers extreme length and accuracy. As you always say, what you do with the club overrides most other things, so it's down to lessons first and then custom fit if you want to see improvements. Technology alone can't fix a bad swing or delivery, or we could just "buy a game" and that would be boring!!
Hi Mark I have hit a few drivers Inc Mizuno ST190, Call Epic, Rouge Cob F8,F9 ETC, but just love my old faithful 2016 M2 With my HAZARDOUS 6.0 63G just bombs out of sight. LOVE IT...;-)
I'd love to see more videos comparing rbz 3 wood and driver to newer clubs (taylormade or not). Really want to know if its worth getting something newer, especially in 3 wood, for more distance.
Unsure if I like the format of giving results before the on-course hitting - I always liked to estimate before getting the numbers. But time will tell. Always great videos though. Thanks!
I'd just like to put forward my thoughts on the issue of TaylorMade bringing out new clubs so often. TM are often really harshly criticised for bringing out new models too often, but I can appreciate what they are doing. Lots of people assume that TM are attempting to persuade golfers to change their driver every few months or so. I don't think this is the case to be fair, although I'm sure TM wouldn't mind at all if we did! What's actually happening is that TM need their product to be the best- looking, most modern, most advanced product on the market. They need to do this NOT to persuade existing TM customers to buy new clubs every 6 months , but to compete for business from ANY customers who are looking for a new driver. Therefore TM want the TM driver to seduce the customer with the best paint job, the best stats, the latest tech such as carbon and weights etc. They NEED to do this , because if they don't , the club will soon appear a bit old and out of date. Because remember, all the other manufacturers are bringing out new rivals all the time too. Tennis racket manufacturers do exactly the same thing. Football boot companies do it too. They're not being evil and trying to persuade M1 owners to upgrade every time, but they MUST have the most attractive product on the shelf all the time, and if that means running to keep still, then so be it. So there you have it, rant over.
Not sure if I saw that - did you get to use the same shaft on both drivers? If so, which shaft did you use? Loft 9.5 or 10.5? With these new breed of drivers, do you still recommend to 'loft up'?
Yes I did.The old one is a 10.5 set to lower which puts it at 8.5 and the new one was a 9.5 set to standard. With manufacturing tolreances the loft can be off slightly either way too.You would need to see the gc2 screen where it shows the dynamic loft and launch to get a better idea. With bulge and roll on a club 2mm high or low on the face will change the launch angle also.Like Mark says strike is king !
Mark, just revisited this review in light of recent incidents!! Why oh why are TM so against giving you clubs when you give such honest and realistic reviews? Irrespective of your club deal how can they argue with your real world and unbiased viewer friendly opinions?? Man-up TM and grow a pair. Cheers bruh!
Mark- Do you think the old 2016 version of the M2 is still a competitive diver today? I’m looking to upgrade from a Superfast 2.0 and wondering if this would be a good improvement over what I have. Thanks!
it looks like the newer one has a lot lower launch. Could be better into the wind? Also you would get a little more role with the new one with a lower launch. It is hard to be able to test that in the wetter conditions that you have, wouldn't you say?
Crossfield, any chance of you doing a comparison of a 2016/2017 driver with a driver from 5/6/7 years ago...I'm not convinced there will be any difference

Ok so yeah I hear you about the custom fit and how its so important. I play off 6 and have never been fit for a club purely because I cant afford a new 500pound driver. Like surely I'm not the only one who can play reasonable golf and has never been fit for a club. You make it sound like custom fitting is an easy thing to go about. If I could I'd get fit and not buy it so when it comes out on golf bidder I'll try buy the one recommended. I just can't afford a new driver. sorry

I won't 'fin' my chip... I'll chunk my chip after a great drive. Good honest review of the reality of the golf club market. Thanks Mark.

Thanks for an awesome review. Love the on-course testing and graphics. Commentary-wise, I think this is my favorite review of yours ever. Very thoughtful comments/recommendations.
The fact that you can hit 2 drives like that on the last hole shows what a driving "Machine" you are!...nearly as good as Soph's .cheers Bro!

Mark, would you ever advise getting custom fit for the new M2, and using those specs to purchase an old m2?
Just got a great deal on the 2016 version! Thanks for the feedback..
top review.i think shaft choice is way more important now than upgrading drivers.
Great impartial review Mark. Looks as though the New model has a lower ball flight was that the case? Couldn't hear any distinguishable sound difference either on the video what was it like on course?
Nice work with the ball tracer colour matching the driver colourways. Beautiful attention to deatail bruh!
Hi Mark, great video. It's like RBZ vs RBZ stage 2 all over again.
Love the new on course reviews! :)
great video and great points at the end about custom fit versus last year's club being harder to custom fit. you could always buy the same shaft you've been using and try that in the new head though.

Reps at Taylormade are not happy wih this review, but we are!!
i'm still using r9 325cc and it is still very good...test m2 old & m2 new, nice feeling from both drivers..highly recommended for TM lovers..

As always, Mark an excellent "honest" review.
I'm so tempted to drag my mate to Dawlish Warren it looks awesome and at a reasonable price we are both from Bristol so a nice day out...
what a beautiful Jacket. where can i buy this one?
Hi Mark I have hit a few drivers Inc Mizuno ST190, Call Epic, Rouge Cob F8,F9 ETC, but just love my old faithful 2016 M2 With my HAZARDOUS 6.0 63G just bombs out of sight. LOVE IT...;-)
Driver looks great! Great Review. Weird thing I need to point out Mark, I have that very same Kylo Ren bobblehead! Sweet office setup!
I'd love to see more videos comparing rbz 3 wood and driver to newer clubs (taylormade or not). Really want to know if its worth getting something newer, especially in 3 wood, for more distance.
Mark. Have you reviewed the D TYPE m2 driver.??
Unsure if I like the format of giving results before the on-course hitting - I always liked to estimate before getting the numbers. But time will tell. Always great videos though. Thanks!
Hey bruh, could you test the GBB vs. the Great Big Bertha Epic? Cheers!

Very fair and balanced review Mr P...TaylorMade HQ can breathe easy now.😌
Great video Mark, did people really expect that much difference between the models I don't think so
Guy Bean anyone notice the degree difference in the two clubs.
+22bigtuna look at the sleeve. Changeable neck 🙈

Do Aeroburner vs 2017 M2
cheers for an honest review Mark 👍.
Crossfield, any chance of you doing a comparison of a 2016/2017 driver with a driver from 5/6/7 years ago...I'm not convinced there will be any difference
Mark, how about using a GPS device when doing your on course testing. It would be interesting to see if the on course distances are similar to the radar distances. I believe you've said in the past that you seem to hit most drivers around 260. Since radar estimates spin it would be interesting to see if the actual GPS measured distances match the radar distances. Just a suggestion.........
what are you saying about santa, crossfield?
I know it's a few years, but it'd be interesting to see how they compare with a more average swing speed (85ish)?
Excellent Review you made your point still the same club
My dad can get the old m2 with a 3 wood for the same price as the 2017 m2. What do you think is best?
Wait..what about 🎅???
Ok so yeah I hear you about the custom fit and how its so important. I play off 6 and have never been fit for a club purely because I cant afford a new 500pound driver. Like surely I'm not the only one who can play reasonable golf and has never been fit for a club.
You make it sound like custom fitting is an easy thing to go about. If I could I'd get fit and not buy it so when it comes out on golf bidder I'll try buy the one recommended. I just can't afford a new driver. sorry
SprkzM3 So why can't you get fit but not buy it?
lots of places offer custom fittings , it just costs money! but if you keep an eye out for demo days you can usually get a "semi" fitting for free .
would love to c how something like the r11 would fair against the new m2
1. Shafts?
2. Sample size of data given?
3. Less material on 2017 M2 toe area = faster rotation of the face? (Semi draw engineered, hence lower launch and spin from face closing..?)
So do you prefer the sound of the old m2 or new one? or is there not much of a difference.
Great review which saved me money, thank you.
I bought the TM Jetspeed solely and the vid you did with Lockey, does that mean i am in the army ?
Are these drivers both fit to your specifications?
I bought the old M2 today. I just hit it better...not to mention it was $100 cheaper. Win win
Awesome Mark! Love your honesty in terms of equipment even though you sometimes might be perceived as somewhat biased regarding Mizuno ;).
ok Mark I understand and get that strike is king.....so how does one fix strike?
matthew madalone pratice hitting shots from toe/heel to get a feel for changing strike - get some face tape on and challenge yourself to hit different parts of the club face, helps to develop feedback and will help you become more consistent with strike
Spot on. It's purely business - Volkswagen bring a new golf out every year and they are nigh on identical to the year before. They're not going to stop because some butt hurt consumers think they are "ripping them off". Some people will always buy that new shiny one and some people will be happy with their old version.
Yep! Good stuff, well presented.
Good video as always
Really lovely review as usual
got any spare sets of clubs you could send please mark?
Make sure you do this with other clubs as well so the "your biased against TM" crew stays away
the new one looks better. But would cost a lot more. No point paying extra for a slightly better looking club. But great vid
Not sure how Taylormade could justify the upcharge but they had better watch it because the Taylormade brand is also on shaky ground.
Compare Epic/Sub Zero vs. original M2
Thanks for the review!
GREAT VIDEO 👍🏼
Good review. Cheers Brah!
