I took the single weight out of my SLDR after a couple weeks and replaced it with 2 weights. 2 x 9g instead of the std 18g, the difference in forgiveness in having them close together and spread out is huge. I've hit the R15, M1 and M2 (2016) and wouldn't change. The face is so stable with the weights spread out.
I was waiting for this test. I still have my sldr that I bought new off of ebay a year after it came out for about $150 a few years ago. Your test worked out how I thought it would, I haven't hit a longer driver than the sldr, cheers
I have the SLDR and have tried other clubs but have yet to find something that gives me a reason to change. I'm so used to it now and it performs well so I can save my dollars for the future. Great review as always
Videos like these, with time, are going to change the way people think about buying golf clubs. Great work. Hope more people watch videos like these before purchasing.
I'm seeing some sales for the Titleist D2 and was thinking of trading in my SLDR... got to test both but this video made me appreciate what I already have. Thanks Mark!
I remember trying the SLDR and all I remember from that experience is how unforgiving it was for me. I love my "old" M2 driver because it offers a nice balance of low spin, forgiveness and good distance. However, this comparison shows you how much marketing hype is behind all this "new tech" from manufacturers. Good review Mark.
I played SLDRs 430 and absolutely loved that driver. It did however feel in windy days like it would simply fall out of the sky. I switched to JPX 850 and havent looked back.
I own both. Cracked my R11 the night before I was to play Torrey Pines in 2014 (week of Farmers Insurance Open) and had to visit a late night Golfsmith who sold me a SLDR for cheap. Played great. Years later, put the M in my bag and liked it. Took the old SLDR out today and was crushing it. Longer than my M by 10-20 yards and straighter. Going back to the SLDR.
Thanks Mark. I have the SLDR S 12 degree and XR16 , and find the SLDR easier to hit and carry it longer. Gary Player has been saying it for years, the distance is in the ball. I switched to titleist prov1x and the difference was significant.
Enjoyed the test, Mark. Thx! I'm still gaming the SLDR, which has plenty of forgiveness for me, because I haven't found added performance when testing the M drivers and don't like their feel & sound.
Mark, agree 100%. The longest driver I've ever hit was the SLDR 430 but I had to get rid of it because even the slightest miss would send the ball sideways.
glad you do stuff like this Mark as makes me not get drawn into hasty new "unneeded" new drivers ... how does the m1 compare to the aeorburner to you ?
Brilliant test bruh and kind of backs up my current issue! I've had for about 10 years a Ping G2 driver bought from ebay second hand! Thought I needed to get in to the modern world last January and got custom fitted for the Nike Vapor. Whilst I hit the Vapor well, I still struggle to regularly hit better shots with hit than my trusty G2!
So basically, club tech doesn't evolve much at all, older clubs (within reason) are just as good as the new. I've hit my longest drives with my old Ping G15 but after it broke replaced it with the G30, both nice clubs but all those PGA rules and regulations mean there's not much in it regarding performance and never will be!
James Luce having said that crossfield was carrying the Callaway epic 280 yards, they can also fiddle about with stuff to increase ball speed when you miss the middle, technology evolves just slowly
James Luce I think that golf club tech has reached it's ceiling now these past couple years. No use hitting 10 extra yards every year and paying like a grand every year on frosty one that would be best told in the clubhouse. lol
Alexander Schwarzbart I'd love it for the old school to be OLD SCHOOL though. Like I'm talking steelheaded drivers i.e. The OG Big Bertha and Great big bertha. Loved my steel shafted big bertha back in my high school golf team days
Love my SLDRs. And yeah, downside with it is "fitting" which is where the SLDR provides a bit more option so if you are looking on the market either works. I like the silver head (a little Adams influence).
Nice review - interesting how many people think the 'next' big thing will improve their game. This video shows, like you always say, strike is key....thanks Mark
G'day Mark can you please advise what shafts where you using, as my swing speed is around 110+ and currently upgrading from a R11 regular flex (which flex's way too much)
Had the SLDR, had the Nike covert 2.0, had the ping G20, had the ping G25, and just sold my ping i25. Low spin not good for me. Bought a taylormade r7 460 off eBay for £20..... Love it
I feel like SLDR is still probably the longest and lowest spinning driver they have made. The problem I had with it is it seemed to exaggerate my misses. A miss with the driver I play now will still be in play. With SLDR, more often than not, I was OB or in a hazard.
Enjoy all you videos Mark always informative content. Have the SLDR S was thinking about an M1 or M2 .... decision made thank you another season with the SLDR S.
Hoppy1973 LoL The SLDR was the very first driver that I had absolutely went crazy for and bought brand new! Still have it, it's one of the drivers I will never sell. Sold my R15 thing was Garbage.
Great test might have to get my sldr back before its sold 🤔 as I've only just swapped it for last years M2. Really got to grips with the sldr just before I swapped it though hit in the right place off the face you could get the spin to drop off and gain 30 yards. M2 is taking a bit of getting used to as it feels a lot lighter to swing but again when hit in the right place on the face it goes really well.
These on cource testings reviews are great! You can see the results in real world. It would bee also interesting too see less spinning chunky irons against more spinning bladed irons. What is the difference in real world?
Last year i got fitted for and bought the M2 (2016) and i only was looking for a new driver because the shaft broke on my 2008 Tour Burner, which i liked. There is NO reason to buy new clubs if you are doing fine with a set of fitted clubs you already have except damage. Hence, i don't get why people are upset about annual new models of clubs. A new club being marketed is no reason to buy it, just because it's there. But if you do buy one, you can be sure to get the very newest technology, however much that may be worth, which is nice.
I noticed you were using the SLDR S driver which has fixed loft options and yours was at 10 degrees. I game the original SLDR in a 430cc head and standard at 12 degrees of loft. I cannot hit the thing! I had the 460cc head which I hit worse. I also have the mini driver SLDR S in 280cc head At 12 degrees and hit that the best. Average distance all things being equal is about 210m with driver and 225m with mini driver. My question is why...? shouldn't the driver be longer? Maybe a video on this...I know they're now old clubs but I've had them since new. My handicap is 21 (but should be a lot lower if I could driver well) I compress irons well consistently. Hit my 8 iron about 150m pure which a lot of people thinks makes me a big hitter but then I'm not long at all with woods...any ideas?
So basically what you're saying is: No one should be buying the new M1, just split the difference and get an R15 (My current driver) or a 2016 M1/M2. I haven't not seen a single review that makes me want to run out and spend $500 on an M1. Now the Callaway GBB Epic Sub-zero is another story! Is it just me or do Callaway clubs keep getting longer names? Great review Mark, Thanks Mark. Cheers. Brah.
You are right Mark, the SLDR did move the needle. I still have my SLDR 430. When I hit it on the screws it is a cannon. But just a little off and it goes LEFTTTTTTT. Upgraded to newer tech last year Bombtech, same to a little more distance but wayyyyy more forgiving. I still play my SLDR from time to time. That grey 430 head is still sexy as HELL!
Good stuff, brah. Love the real course testing. Thought you might have picked one dog-leg left hole given your tendency to draw rather than two fade holes. Keep up the good work
Honestly, not grasping the method to the madness in some of these reviews comparing old to new. It's almost as though the sole intent is to prove the "it's all about the strike", which like doing tests to prove that water is wet.
Hey Brah! I currently have the regular SLDR 460, what was the difference in the SLDR S? Is its just the bonded shaft (non adjustable) or is there any other tech going on? This might just end up saving me some money as I'm always on the "classifieds" looking for something new, now I guess I can can focus my cash somewheres else. Thanks again Brah!
Steven Bourque yes s is cheaper and bonded which is weird usually when they add letters like s r i to products they get better and more expensive iPhone 6s, Audi s3 Audi rs3...
I think there is something to be said about the added weight of the adjustabilty built into the new clubs. His SLDR is the bonded model. Get custom fit and forget the adjustable weights and hozels.
Thanks for doing that mark, my current driver is the sldr 430 (supposed to version but who can ever be sure). Was thinking about changing to the m1 2016 430 head but looks like the spin numbers are similar. Savemycash.
Hi Mark great video!! I have an Sldr and find that it performs better with the weight actually removed! ☺ (So I play it like that) Why is that so?? I have to loft it down however compared with wt. in. Ps I have no access to computer trackers for launch #'s. Looking forward to your reply. Cheers Clarence.
Interesting video! Basically, if you strike the ball well, the SLDR would be just as long as any new driver if not longer. However, if you don't hit it on the centre, that's another story. I think a lot of people are expecting a step change in technology from TM similar to the previous releases but are disappointed by a marginally fine tuning of the 2017 M series. SLDR boasts loft up, weight forward to give one high launch and low rpm for max distance. R15 splits the weights to make it more forgiving. 2016 M1 gives us T Track that the back weight can be used to fine tune the RPM. TM didn't have any ground breaking tech in the new M1 that differentiates. Whatever "% better" features of the new M1 fail to translate to measurable results. TM M drivers will have a tough year against Callaway's EPIC.
Great video MC. One thing is for sure; better to invest the £££ in improving the player rather than getting drawn in to the new tech. I would imagine it only makes a substantial amount of difference at tour pro level rather than us average 2 rounds per week golfer?
Great review, just a thought though. For the on course tests, could you have someone (lockey I'm guessing) shoot you standing next to the balls in the fairway from the tee box to get accurate distances? Only saying that because I think it's simple to give the drives the "eye test" and just say oh they are only 5-6 yards apart but in reality, due to different lines, they might be much more or less. Just a thought.
Justin King I love this comment. I was hoping to say the exact same thing. Maybe even just have Lockey back at the tee so Mark cane zap the yardage from each ball to Coach as a reference. Great question sir. #NotAllCommentersAreIgnorant
imallfordabulls I was going to say the same as have the r9 and wonder at what point tech reaches parity with latest products due to limitations imposed.
As per my comment on the epic sub zero review. next to no difference in length from old school (ish) to new grossly overpriced / expensive offerings. Anyone out there able or willing to reasonably accurately custom fit slightly older clubs? Lots of ordinary joes looking for a reasonablly fitted and priced driver to help out off the tee (including me) !!!! Great review again Brah!!
I still carry an SLDR in the bag and can drive it a good 240-250 yards, but I'm not accurate because of my swing fault with a driver. So I usually drive with a 17 hybrid and can sneak it up 210-220, but it finds the fairway more often. But that's not to say I'm not going to not work on my driver swing.
T. White I've hit it in the store and on a demo day. I didn't hit it well. The way the 460cc head was shaped, it felt too big for me. I like the "compact size" of the SLDR. But I know I have a swing fault with a driver, and I think I'm going to invest in lessons :) But appreciate the tip there, my father has considered getting one as he hit it very well.
SLDR every time. Struggled with my driving then picked up the 430 model, have it set at 12*, love the flight and confidence it gives me, this club ain't going anywhere. Keep up the good work
All this time I never knew SLDR was short for SLiDeR. Great test but not one that surprised me. I still play a Titleist 910D2 as I haven't really managed to beat it for performance and I love the looks #cheersbrah
Taylormade drivers are good ! I'm still using the SUPERFAST BURNER 1 and its still working for me. Be keen to best the SLDR as the next step. Wouldn't be keen on spending the $$$ for the lasted kit as its just ridiculously overpriced and the gains are very marginal. My score will go lower if I can master the short game not drive further.
You didn't get 2 strikes the same with the clubs in the video, I have the SLDR still as nothing has come up that would warrant me spending another £300+ on a new driver, I don't see 5 yards more distance is worth the extra £££££ so will stick with the trusty SLDR. Which I thought may have been the case with the test. Plus you didn't hit it any further lol.
I have had clubs i was fit for and clubs i bought of the shelf. there is no difference ZERO NADA NOTHING. I don't use trackman or any of that stuff for my research. I just count my shots at the end of the round. If i practice more i get lower scores, it is that simple..
If you could hit the ball on the screws every single time, SLDR all day. It's forward and higher CG kills spin. However, MOI is low and is very difficult to get all that distance if your strike isn't consistent. M1 gets almost as much distance, but pretty much doubles the MOI of SLDR. I'll take higher ball speeds across the face, and balls on the fairway all day long with M1.
Great head to head Mark, I can't find anything that beats my Razr fit extreme with pro launch red shaft bought off the shelf, new tech not always worth the money.

Still play my beloved SLDR. great club. sometimes I even get out my burner 2.0 superfast. can get more distance some days with it. great vid mark!
87chouy still have both my "sldr" and my super fast 2.0 ... they both still compete on distance with any new offerings
Thank you very much, Mark. Have been wanting this head to head comparison since M1 2016 first came out.
Why did loft up weight forward change back to loft down weight back did the laws of physics change?
+Cornwall1888 haha good question.
Weight back means more forgiveness and you can keep spin the same via lower CG
christopherMTLvideos No. Forgiveness
I love it when Mark insta calls a shot perfect.... always gives me the smile
Good review Mark.
it's like bumping into your ex and you have to have a good old think about why you dumped them.
and knock one out as well obviously ;)
Lazy Alexander she dumped you remember!
I'll keep my SLDR and spend the money on a trip to Amsterdam :-)
You just have to love Mark Crossfield's reviews!!
I played SLDRs 430 and absolutely loved that driver. It did however feel in windy days like it would simply fall out of the sky. I switched to JPX 850 and havent looked back.

That SLDR grouping on the dry test is remarkable.
Mark, the M1 is 9.5. What would happen with a 10.5 with the weight forward? Higher launch angle with less spin?
Were the side spin values of any relevance? Or can you put that down entirely to your swing? More sidespin would be less accuracy?
Great video. Loving the new way of content. Will stay with my SLDR, just change the shaft to one I was fitted for on a M1.
Wonder why you didn't alternate drivers for the first shot. I've always felt if I hit two off the tee the advantage always goes to the second strike.
Hey Mark could you do 2015 GBB driver vs. GBB Epic? Thanks
Thanks Mark, now I will keep my SLDR for another year or so. Money saved
Thanks for this email. My swing speeds are close to yours and this really helps me deciding what driver to purchase.
TM are going to love you... I'm predicting Epic Sub Zero will be in your bag soon.
I've just bought a set of sldr wood. Drive, 3, 5 and 7 for £200 loving them so far.
I don't think who ever had them before me used them.
Cheers for pumping the value of my SLDR up mark 😂
Pretty much this, I am sure someone is purchasing a used SLDR cause of this vid.
So basically, club tech doesn't evolve much at all, older clubs (within reason) are just as good as the new. Is the r9 similar to the SLDR and newer models or is there a big drop off?
I really like and appreciate the on course testing, it gives a better sense of meaning to me
mark, did you have to loft up more with SLDR than with M1, and how much?
More such comparison between oldschool and newschool!!!!!
Alexander Schwarzbart I'd love it for the old school to be OLD SCHOOL though. Like I'm talking steelheaded drivers i.e. The OG Big Bertha and Great big bertha. Loved my steel shafted big bertha back in my high school golf team days
Awesome video! That's why I haven't let go of my Sldr S
Love my SLDRs. And yeah, downside with it is "fitting" which is where the SLDR provides a bit more option so if you are looking on the market either works. I like the silver head (a little Adams influence).
So how wide,,when added together,,were those 2 side by side fairways that for some reason you could not hit
Nice review - interesting how many people think the 'next' big thing will improve their game. This video shows, like you always say, strike is key....thanks Mark
G'day Mark can you please advise what shafts where you using, as my swing speed is around 110+ and currently upgrading from a R11 regular flex (which flex's way too much)
Another great mid-handicapper driver review. Thanks Bruh
Had the SLDR, had the Nike covert 2.0, had the ping G20, had the ping G25, and just sold my ping i25. Low spin not good for me. Bought a taylormade r7 460 off eBay for £20..... Love it
My SLDR was great when struck but I found it fell out the air if I got it a bit necky
Can you do m1 vs areoburner??
It's got a little wing.
Mark Hedetniemi the little wing versus slidy carbon stuff lol
M2 is more similar.

Great job handling Taylormade equipment! Very fair and informative !)
only reason I switch drivers (r1 to xr 16 pro) was because of the look, feel, and smaller head. the xr is going to stay in the bag for a while.

You should do one and go way back and compare r11 or even r9.
imallfordabulls I was going to say the same as have the r9 and wonder at what point tech reaches parity with latest products due to limitations imposed.
I love your reviews Mark I really do, but how am I going to get a good deal on this club now?! everyone is going to be getting this ;)
I liked the SLDR on good hits when i tried it but it punished my dodgy ball-striking too much.

hi t. i have a ping anser 9.5 available brand new used only a few times this past season.
I have a sldr in my bag I love it keeps up with the new expensive drivers #yesmyplease
Love the new test.
Thanks after seeing other pros knock the M2 30yds past the SLDR I thought I might swap my SLDR for the M2 now its staying in the bag!
Put my SLDR in the bag for tomorrow’s round!
Great test and review brah.
SLDR every time. Struggled with my driving then picked up the 430 model, have it set at 12*, love the flight and confidence it gives me, this club ain't going anywhere.
Keep up the good work
Been driver shopping today, found SLDR brand new £75, opted for the r15 brand new £99. Could have bought both for less than half of M1!!
Greasby1golf was offered £35 trade in for my r11s went with the intent of buying an m2 for £280, my r11s went 8 yards further in testing
Be fun to see SLDR vs Epic Subzero
One of your best
All this time I never knew SLDR was short for SLiDeR.
Great test but not one that surprised me. I still play a Titleist 910D2 as I haven't really managed to beat it for performance and I love the looks #cheersbrah
I hit the SLDR a week ago at a Roger Dunn golf store and it was pretty fucking good I think I was carrying 270 with it when I normally carry about 260
I am 13 years old i can hit 200 yards with my pitching wedge
Yea I carry my wedges about 310 yards
Love this video, loved my SLDR
Taylormade drivers are good ! I'm still using the SUPERFAST BURNER 1 and its still working for me. Be keen to best the SLDR as the next step.
Wouldn't be keen on spending the $$$ for the lasted kit as its just ridiculously overpriced and the gains are very marginal. My score will go lower if I can master the short game not drive further.
Like you said in your review Mark not much difference apart from £300+
Nice review enjoyed that.
Great reviewing, love how you are cutting through the bs!
So what mark is saying is there isnt alot of difference? well.....thats a shock innit 👍
I can feel it coming, TM with "turbulators/bumps" LOL
my longest driver was sldr.
but it was also worst in dispersion.
I would imagine some TM pro's would be happy to still use an SLDR but they would not be allowed to - which is of course understandable.
Nice shots brah
Please will you dust this M1 off and compare it to the SIM 2 (whenever TM send it you or you buy one. Awkward)?
great video!
The R9 Supertri tp is just as good as any of those drivers and looks much nicer! Anybody agree?
Great head to head Mark, I can't find anything that beats my Razr fit extreme with pro launch red shaft bought off the shelf, new tech not always worth the money.
