  • Met up with some friends over at the Athens County Crawlers ACC Offroad Park last weekend. As i was the only one with an updated satellite pic on my mapping App (Gaia) i was chosen to lead through unknown trails! It was sloppy but our rag tag group still had fun! Interested to go back when its dry!
    Apparently i'm in need of an ACTUAL copyright-free library of musics (that isn't the generic YT stuff). I had some music over the fast forward of my getting winched, but it had a claim. Grumble grumble.
    Sorry the audio at the end is still sorta crappy, i bought a external mic to use, but it disappeared somewhere between loading the Jeep and driving home...
    Mods:
    -Rocky Road Super Sliders (rock rails)
    -Dobinsons KL Trailhawk suspension lift, paired with partial Hazard Sky lift spacers to achieve 2" lift
    -32" Milestar Patagonia MTs (265/70/17) (had to trim front fenders and pinch welds)
    -40" Rough Country Curved LED DLR Light bar with Hazard Sky mounts
    -Rock Lights (cheapo)
    -4" Pod Lights (cheapo)

    I've always been a Jeep Wrangler owner but I just bought a new 2020Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk with the 2.0l turbo and I love it. I showed up at the super lift park and my buddies all ragged me about showing up in a soccer mom SUV... I punked them good on the mountain , rocks and muddy creek trails... I was truly impressed with the Trailhawk and the capability actually surprised me...it will do all that the Wrangler will do and then some.👍

      Yep, it for sure won't outwheel everything ever...and a built up wrangler will always be more capable...but they do well for what they are. And the look of shock and amazement of seeing one of us out wheeling is most of the reason i like to wheel it!

    This is crazy. A Cherokee! Not a Wrangler or Grand Cherokee or even a Power Wagon, is keeping up with a Tacoma and a FJ.

      Funniest part was they were trusting ME to their fate for the day! None of us had any clue what was down any of the trails! But everyone had fun and there was only some minor fender damage after all said and done.

    Good video as usual. Enjoyable to watch. If possible, can you sometimes comment on the gearing? Automatic, sand, rock, regular or low gear, rear end locked or not? Thanks and keep the cool videos coming.

    • @FearlessTrailhawk
      @FearlessTrailhawk  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Literally ANYTHING on the trails is 4Low. High is really only ever used if you are out cruising the beach or something. For this particular day it lived in Sand/Mud mode as wheelspin was king...all day long. (i reminded the other TH of that a few times on the radio) I don't recall if i had it locked at any point, may have locked it for a couple of the greasy hills?
      I typically just leave it in Auto when on regular dry trails, and only use Rock if doing any technical rocky bits.

      Also, in 4 low at the lowest, v6 I think is 48:1 crawl, 2.4 4cyl is 56:1... if you do the math... they're pretty close in wheel torque... v6 still wins though... I'm speaking for 2016... the newer ones .. they put about the same in the v6 too. ... so v6 would REALLY beat the 2.4 then. Still.. with my 2.4.. I pulled a MASSIVE tree out of my friend's yard .... like 50 foot long very heavy tree ... the torque is insane on all of them... not even 1/4 inch throttle and it felt like I had enough power to break the 10,000 lb tow strap... Maybe not but it felt that way. The tow hooks are VERY strong.

    6:50 Roads? Where we're going we don't need roads. :)
    That FJ Race Truck was nice! I think he should have had the lead going up some of those hills, then he could have pulled you up.

    • @FearlessTrailhawk
      @FearlessTrailhawk  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      FJ looked super sharp! He didn't want to lead, none of us knew anything about the park, there was zero trail signage, and i had the best gps map. He also had the benefit of watching everyone else go through stuff. Plus he also had no winch, so if he would have gotten stuck going up a hill, it would have been the same.
      I think the main reason i got stuck on the one hill that i did was because that log that pushed me off the side into the bushes/trees.

      19+ are the better versions, imho, lots of little improvements to some 'death by papercuts' things. Yes, i'm lifted. All the mods i've done are in the description of each video with what was on it at the time.

    I’m WAY late to the party here, but I gotta ask. Are you making any use of the crawl systems for this thing or just sending it? If not I get it, but if you did use it I’d love to know where it really wasn’t working out well.

    • @FearlessTrailhawk
      @FearlessTrailhawk  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      99% of the time it lives in "auto". I recently did a video on how i use the driving modes and such. In general i use the modes for their name-sake, for that obstacle, then back to 'auto' it goes. And sorry, i'm not going to micro-commentate every time i switch modes on the trails. To me is basic common sense, following the name and purpose of the modes.

    I was looking at diffrent tires size to go with my 2" lift and I actually was looking at the 265/70R17 over the 255/75R17

    • @FearlessTrailhawk
      @FearlessTrailhawk  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the 265/70 rub slightly more than the 255/75 as they are wider. Either way i'll be staying with these until some more options populate the 255/75 range.

    • @jessebartunek3195
      @jessebartunek3195 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have 16 with 2" spacer lift. I tried the 265 and it was just too much rub for me...parking lots quickly became nerve wracking because I didn't want to crank it too hard. Went back down to a 245/75, obviously no rubbing because of the former trimming. Happy for now. May give a 245/80 a try down the road some time.

      I was just talking about trails in general. Live in the Cincinnati area and closest I can find are like 2 hours away.

    • @FearlessTrailhawk
      @FearlessTrailhawk  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mabus7th Yep, there is not a whole lot 'legal' around this part of Ohio. There are a few parks and sections of county roads that are suitable for stocks, but like you've already discovered...they aren't "near". The best bet for you is there are several parks in KY that would probly be the closest. Either way i wouldn't go anywhere new without a friend who knows those trails, and i'd advise never wheeling alone in general.
      I'm still trying to find places and get people to show me around. But with the current situation all that is kinda on hold until this all blows over.

    • @FearlessTrailhawk
      @FearlessTrailhawk  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have MTs, and they helped a little, but when that top layer is that greasy...not much less than swampers will grip very well...

    • @quadpit
      @quadpit 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was running 285/70-17 Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S tires on my FJ and those are definitely not mudders but the greasy mud was on frozen ground so none of us had any good grip. The mud tires couldn't dig down to anything dry and get traction so it kind of made tire selection not as critical. We were all floating on slick mud with slippery frozen ground underneath.

    I don't understand. Why would you do so much off-roading and not just get a ruby?

    • @FearlessTrailhawk
      @FearlessTrailhawk  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because i hate how wranglers drive on the road, and i do a LOT of driving. And i like to be different, while enjoying creature comforts that can't be had in a wrangler. Plus it's too large for my liking. And the fact a stock Rubi with the options i want (which is still missing sone ths KL has) costs lots more than i'll ever be able to put into the KL...let alone how much would be spent in aftermarket stuff for the JL...
      And its not like i'm doing extreme trails or anything. Everything i've done a stock JL Rubi can do.

      I'm VERY surprised that the Cherokee EVER slipped on anything. I have tried to find scenarios where mine would lose grip and I feel like it's impossible. It is VERY difficult to get wheelspin on-road, for sure. It can be pouring rain, I can floor it... zero wheel spin.. it's like it's a dry sunny day. Absolutely incredible 4 auto. The trailhawk has the BEST traction of any vehicle I've EVER driven in my life.

      Yes, i know, i'm the most terrible person ever for running over someone else's debris in the middle of the trail and mindlessly tossing out of the path. And this particular offroad park had enough crap on the sides of the trails to likely build a whole rig, i kid you not. I saw the park staff toss some parts off the trail that morning, and i didn't think that little plastic bit from some wrangler's bumper was that big of deal. I made a mistake. But i'm sure you don't know what thats like as you are perfect apparently.
      And yes, i do pick up lots of crap and generally leave trails in better condition than i found them. I just don't always have cameras that catch it, nor do i feel like adding all that into the vids just to virtue signal. I have now edited this out if that makes you feel better.
