    Best vegan mashed potatoes I ever made : Sprouted silken tofu, nutrional yeast, salt, pepper, one raw garlic clove, vegan chicken bullion cube blended in a blender then add to steamed potatoes and mash with a hand masher add almond milk for smoother texture if desired. No fat, all, taste...but this seems way more economical. I am going to try this!

  • @MalMilligan
    @MalMilligan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Fantastic !! Those mashed potatoes looked great with a wonderful creamy texture. As a kid I was taught that there was too much starch in the water to use it after the cooking was done. You are quite right, that water is good for a veggie soup stock the next day. I have lots of organic frozen vegetables now that it's cold in my area, and I can throw some into that stock... maybe add some curry or cloves or whatever and it's another nice healthy meal.

    The starch water should not be used when cooking potatoes. That is why hers had a glue-like consistency. Also, although handy to use, the immersion blender is not the right choice for mashing potatoes. It purees the potatoes, much like baby food, does not mash them and adds to the glue-like effect. Mash your potatoes by hand with a pastry cutter, or use a traditional hand or stand mixer, which will get some air into the mixture.

    • @Ebenia
      @Ebenia 9 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      I think this is a good idea but needs a bit of love. No starch water, no handblender and add the fresh herbs in the very end.

    • @bigbellyjack
      @bigbellyjack 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +smugglerscoveconsulting It's the blender that's brought the starch out and she used yellow spuds which are starchier.

    • @smugglerscoveconsulting845
      @smugglerscoveconsulting845 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Jack Harris Yep the blender would do it! My research indicates that russets are the starchiest. But you are right. If a blender was used it would not matter what variety.

    • @sumayabenhossen6105
      @sumayabenhossen6105 8 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      +smugglerscoveconsulting some people prefer this consistency, me included, some don't want chunks. It is personal preference how potatoes are mashed.

    • @smugglerscoveconsulting845
      @smugglerscoveconsulting845 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +Sumaya Benhossen The issue is not chunks vs no chunks. The immersion blender makes a glue like consistancy as opposed to creamy potatoes no glue. However, you are right, it is a matter of personal preference, and for those not bothered by the consistancy, the immersion blender is certainly nice and handy to use. You look great and are a great example of your own cooking!

  • @chuckgonerawvegan

    I made this just now... I used red potatoes, I left the skin on, personal preference, and I omitted the turmeric, since they were red potatoes... I was hesitant to use the immersion blender, but I did, and I will be using the emersion blender for this from now on...
    It wasn't as pretty as yours, but it was delicious... Thanks for the video... : )

    greetings from Canada to Australia! Rutabega is a member of the turnip family I think and actually does need to be hacked into manageable pieces -- I never peel potatoes -- this is just a Canadian recipe that really works; chop up rutabaga and with minimum of veg stock or water ignore it on low heat. I use a bit of miso paste; don't go nuts over herbs at that point, but certainly whatever you wish. When liquid has evaporated potato masher is all you need; freshly ground black pepper and I use a bit of either olive oil or cashew butter; pinch of lemon juice, sounds complicated but absolutely not. The slow cooking keeps in the nutrients and flavour and it's wonderful with caramelized onions. There's a restaurant in my country which adds some cheddar cheese -- don't notice its absence ever. Tx for great video!.

    After peeling vegetables or potatoes, you can keep them for a day in a container with fresh water. When for some reason, you want to keep to them a day or 2 longer, please change the water every day to avoid food poisoning. The same counts for tofu.

I wonder if I can convince my SAD (Standard American Diet) family of this type of mashed potatoes for the Christmas dinner this year. I would however use a hand masher I like having the potatoes somewhat intact not fully creamed like that.

    I recreated your mashed potatoes recipe and it came out great! I watched your video before and I thought you used soy milk but apparently, it really isn’t needed. Thanks for the great tip about using the leftover potato liquid as vegetable broth, it is rather expensive to buy it in the store. Being a guy, I would have poured it down the drain. It is also nice to be able to cook something and then use leftovers as a primary ingredient in another recipe.

    You are such a good cook!! You are very beautiful and seem like a very nice person aswell! i came across your recipes while looking for vegan mashed potato. Yours came up the top and i do admit "the best vegan mashed potato" title and the photo did catch my eye haha :) i added a bit of my homemade almond milk and i added most of the juice left with the herbs which i boiled the potatoes in into the mash. It tasted so so delicious!! i have made it 3 times in a couple of weeks haha. I am new to being a vegan, i was vegetarian for 6 years. i am 26 now :) i am looking forward to more of your recipes!! thank you and well done on your major transformation!!

    We make our potatoes very much like this video. But when we boil our potatoes, we add a fair amount of cauliflower. The Cauliflower blends very nicely when you whip the potatoes, and it adds a nice fluffy mash. The flavor, in my view, is very nice indeed. But it's really hard to make bad mashed potatoes. Thank you for this video.
