    I am a Canadian who came from Hong Kong. I met an Anglophone who lived in Quebec while on vacation. He told me briefly that Quebec was seeking to make English an unofficial language, etc.
    Then, I didn't quite understand the issue and probably I still don't fully. Hence, thanks to your posted discussion here on TH-cam.
    On the provision of health and medical services, and linking them to specific language speakers, while denying them to others who don't speak the specific language, is wrong. It also violates certain medical ethics, too.
    Besides, people who think of making laws and regulations to coerce compliance are the Rule By Law totalitarians, similar to the ccp.
    No. Canada is and should be a Rule Of Law country. That's why I came. And I have pledged to defend that.

    • @stephaniehotchkiss9027
      @stephaniehotchkiss9027 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I can understand your confusion... ESPECIALLY since it's the inverse. As being part of Canada, both English and French are official languages. The problem is that Quebec has a not withstanding clause which means they have a certain amount of autonomy and power from the Federal level (i.e. they can ignore certain measures handed down by Ottawa and create their own laws even if it runs counter to Canadian Federal Laws).

    • @brndxt
      @brndxt 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @stephaniehotchkiss9027 I do reckon that there are several distinct societies in Canada. However, we need to be careful about the application of such notwithstanding clauses. It isn't just noncompliance with laws, but more importantly, the principles and spirit of these laws. If not, we may become an extinct society.

    • @yannislaurin5438
      @yannislaurin5438 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Imagine comparing Québec to China because you don't like laws you have to respect. Typical english paranoia

    • @brndxt
      @brndxt 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @yannislaurin5438 Yes, as a general statement, people need to follow the laws. However, whether a law or laws deserve respect, that's another issue.
      In meaningfully democratic countries, again, as a general statement, laws are often enacted to protect and enhance the rights of its citizens and individuals, especially those enshrined in the constitution, which in turn comprises the values, principles, and spirit upon which the countries were founded.
      Often, such laws limit the power of the state and government and protect the people and citizens from undue harm and unjust suppression from the state and government.
      This is Rule Of Law.
      Rule By Law happens when the state and government limit unnecessarily, unreasonably, and unconstitutionally the rights of its people and citizens. As such, the power of the state and government can become overwhelming.
      Distinct society status and exception clauses notwithstanding, power and authority need to be exercised wisely, not expediently, not without restrains, and certainly not injudiciously.

    The lie is that we’re a bilingual country. If a francophone needed emergency services in almost anywhere else in Canada (minus big cities) they would have trouble being served in French, because outside of Quebec and NB there really are very few Francophones. Naturally we need services for English speakers in QB, especially since many non anglophones speak it as a lingua franca. The Francophones do have a point that if they don’t take measures their language will eventually disappear- the question is whether that is inevitable… and if their petty language policies will only serve to further alienate them from all non Quebecois

    All these attacks on the English language is NOT about some perceived threat to the French language, but is intended to "encourage" remaining Anglos to LEAVE the province. I grew up in SW Ontario, the Detroit River was usually a point of humor for us on the Canadian side
    De troit, Detroit River, kinda redundant.
    I was learning French right up until I got to grade two. I could almost string sentences together, then I had to learn about the structural composition, so I could be a formal speaker, if I wanted. Turns out, men are superior in the French language, well, I'm not okay with that. Like I said, I got to grade two and not only was composition and grammar now the focus, but on the wall was a copy of the Charter.
    I could not read at the time. I know right? I was in a different school in each of those three years, early '90's, no jobs, poor, had to keep moving around the county looking for cheaper places.
    Needless to say, the education system was not going to have a kid in grade two who couldn't read, so my entire family was recruited to do the job the education system failed to do. Mom couldn't, won't get in to why, where was dad, grandparents and aunts and uncles and cousins were the only ones who could help.
    Once I figured out how equal and democratic English was, it was not hard to figure out what ing, ed, 's, s, s', 've, tion, sion, ia, ai, ea, ae, and all the other bits and pieces meant. So I decided I needed to practice my reading.
    Looking around the classroom, I found lots and lots of children's books, with very simple words like apple ball and cat. Those were not challenging enough to practice on, in my mind. There was a dictionary, but that only helped me if I knew the word I wanted defined already.
    I picked the Charter to practice on. "Ameliorate" was one of my favorite words in it at the time, today it is "whereas".
    If Quebec would simply ratify the Charter, and admit that speaking French is a disadvantage, because it is, the language issue would evaporate with the amelioration of the conditions of disadvantaged individuals or groups.
    But pride is a sin and we need the rebel as much as we need the hero. Tragic comedy.
