Visa Overstay Last Resort for Immigrant to the U.S. | NBC Left Field

  • “Juan,” a Venezuela national, is legally in the United States on a tourist visa-for now. For Juan, going back home to Venezuela is not an option. If he can’t figure out a way to change his status in the U.S. to a more permanent one, he might soon be one of the hundreds of thousands of immigrants who have overstayed their visas. Official data shows that visa overstays far exceed unauthorized border crossings, even as the Trump administration continues to push for billions to build a wall on the southern border with Mexico to curb illegal immigration.

Visa overstay is not a last option. People here on visas could, you know, actually do what they agreed to do when they accepted the visa. A visa is conditional on the recipient leaving the USA upon expiration of the visa. These people don't need to stay; they need to leave.

Bartholomäus Allen No kidding. I can't believe the government hasn't implemented a system that triggers some kind of alert when a person has overstayed their visa when it actually happens instead of 10 years later when they get caught driving without a license.

Really... if I were to overstay my ESTA/any other visa, you should at least out of courtesy speak full fluent English. The US, Canada and England are English speaking countries.

    • @jomr5251
      @jomr5251 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Not fully truth not at all not even a little bit Canada is NOT an English speaking country they have French as well as English as official languages both, also there are more languages that the natives speak. England has an official language but is not the only language there are some more just like Canada.
"America" or should I say United States of America because that is the OFFICIAL name due America is a CONTINENT from the very north of Canada to the very south of Chile and Argentina, and guess what yes Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras...well you know we ALL ARE AMERICANS just for being born in this continent but this is not the point...well United States does NOT even has an official lenguage recognize for the federal government and way before the very well intentioned pilgrims came to the unknown territory there were SPANISH speaking people as well as natives but NOT ENGLISH AT ALL.

@@jomr5251 I can see what you're are saying. Canada has a overwhelming English speaking majority, but with small pockets of French in areas. The US may not have a official language... but unofficially it's pretty much English, with roads, shops and street signs in English. You will find life hard in these nations living with/without a visa speaking very little to no English pal. South Americans and Mexicans are caught out really easily because of the lack of English and tone of skin (not being racist).

@@jomr5251 Having trouble writing English, there Ho.
North America is considered one continent; South America another.
YOU are incorrect: See Continents of the World
Spanish conquered and colonized 'the Americas" rendering the #Aztec nearly ethnic cleansed; "Indian" is the mistaken identity given to the north american nomads due to earliest explorers who recognized the peoples of the continent of India.
In fact, these early inhabitants are #Siberia ancestry.
French trappers and frontiersmen came next, colonizing the peoples of Siberian descent.
Thirty one States legislate English as the official language; the populace speak overwhelmingly English. Call any service provider and you may HAVE to choose "el prima dos"
For business worldwide, English is primary.
Bilingual individuals speak English as their second language.
Computer Science: programming is English. Ask a #Ukraine programmer.
This phenomena is absolutely not racist or #whitenationalist.
      It's just #settledscience :)

Jo Mr Hmm...I guess it's weird that in order to become a naturalized US citizen, one must be able to read, write, and speak English. It's ridiculous that people think by not calling English the OFFICIAL national language, it somehow ceases to be.
The rest of your comment reeked of showy 'I-told-you-so!' arrogance and was largely irrelevant to the topic. Sort of like the kid in school that none of the other kids could stand.

Bastion of unbiased news reporting @npr refer to Center for Migration Studies of New York finding 2016-2017, people who overstay visas account for *62 percent* of the newly undocumented, while 38 percent crossed a border illegally.
      Resolve this mathematical anomaly:
145,000 Visa overstays *per year* 2016; yet
+100,000 undocumented people cross a border *per month* -predicted to exceed 1,000,000 per year.
      Source: www.npr.org/2019/01/16/686056668/for-seventh-consecutive-year-visa-overstays-exceeded-illegal-border-crossings
VISA overstays carry severe consequence: deportees will sever any claim for visiting forever.
Illegal border cross may include 20 days stay within a US staging area, shelter, meals, clothing, healthcare, stipends.
Asian culture individuals don't recognize hyphenated surnames in order to garner any special recognition.
Asian culture individuals by and large, emigrate for economic and educational purposes.
VISA "green-card" holders do not apply for, nor are rewarded public assistance 'entitlements'.

I hope he gets the visa... I know there's assholes that only want to live on benefits and do nothing. I know there's others that want to join gangs,.... But there's so many more that their almost dying wish if their children to keep on living, specially in Venezuelan's situation. I know of cases were the father works 3 jobs, the mother 2 jobs and they just want some help to keep the kids at school and have some food.... You don't have to be merciful, you don't have to be selfless, to let them stay... You just have to be human

no offense these are tourist visa. My parents immigrated me to Canada many years ago ( harder than usa system) they spend lots time, fees, waiting in line and had to undergo a point system to move us to Canada. It took like 5 years of preparation. Then I went to college in state and met my husband. We decided to stay in the usa instead Canada for his job so I just went through the USA immigration process. Going through the naturalization process right now. I been in the USA for 10 years almost lol (legally) . If i hadn't met my husband I had every intention to go back to Canada. You received a tourist visa not an immigration visa. MOST COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD you can't just simply stay and work, they all have their own sets of immigration laws. There are many people who do wait in line legally and it is because fraud etc that causes the line to become even longer.
