@@Corekidbeenybunny his blast beats are fuckin just inhuman! Like I always tried to recreate his style and just could never ever do it. Glad to meet someone who was so immensely influenced by the wonderful Mike smith
Mike rules! For anyone that was paying attention back in the early death metal days, Mike pioneered a specific style of blast beat that nobody else was doing at the time (i.e. kick/snare/hi-hat (or ride) all in unison played as a downbeat). Other bands, like Morbid Angel, Napalm, Carcass and Deicide were doing the hyper-fast skank beat (typically the up-beat version). Paul Mazurkiewicz from Cannibal Corpse is also worth noting for the double-kick (32nd notes) w/ unison snare and hi-hat/ride.
Ahh you cut the best bit at the end! "Man, if he could've patented the blast-beat he'd... well, he'd still be where he's at now, but what the fuck can you do when you're in a black metal band."
actually mike smith invented the style of blast beat that most people use. before him people were alternating hi hat/bass and snare, but he was the first one to do it all simultaneously, and hes one of the few African Americans in Death Metal.
He's just a man. Very talented drummer, so not hating at all. There is only One True God: The Christian Holy Trinity (Father, Son = Our Lord Jesus Christ, and Holy Ghost). Idolatry (and taking Our Lord's Name in vain) is a grave sin. Not trying to upset you, just being honest. Have a good day man. Peace!

He triggers his snare for himself so that he hears it better in the mix (in his monitors). Everyone who knows Suffocation or has seem them live knows that Mike Smith is one of, if not the hardest hitting drummer in death metal.

A drum trigger is a sensor on a drum that produces a certain sound assigned from a sound module (like the head unit from an electronic drumset) once the drum head has been struck. This device allows drummers to play at a faster rate without having to strike the drum hard.
Yes, we all read wikipedia. Jazz players have done many things, but Charlie Benante was the most prolific innovator of blasting. Anthrax was the first band to really use it profoundly.
The drummer of Repulsion created the blast beat, and he called it the '1-2' beat. Napalm Death's old drummer was the first to refer to it at as a blast beat.
nowadays you got young bucks doing flying fingers and getting power out of it too. Its all in technique and practice. Conservation of energy is key in metal, its like working out - you use shitty form your gonna hurt yourself eventually. Mike is a master at relaxing while he plays but still beating those drums raw.
all the flying finger players are not hitting it remotely as hard. they hit it exactly as Mike demonstrated first i this video. Now granted, they play faster and at that point it's inevitable to switch to faster muscles so I don't take anything away from them. It's just not as intense, not by a mile
i can only do the blast beats with my right hand on the snare and my left hand on the HH(i am right handed)but it is interesting how he switches em up. awesome video, lots to learn here too
That’s what Death Metal needed at the time was a guy with big ass muscles to start blasting hard as fuck. The fact that he blasts so damn hard on Effigy is part of what makes the album so brutal. Effigy would not have been so brutal if Mike wasn’t on drums. There is no doubt in my mind.
They don't mean he created blast beats in general, they're talking about him inventing the "suffo-blast" which is what that's called. The blast where the snare/hat/bass are all simultaneous. Until then, alternating blasts were how it was generally done.
I don't care who started it, all I have to say is that when I heard first heard Suffocation I was absorbed into the music. Everything was excellent and the drumming was intensely superb and captivating with passion that I never heard surpassed by any other record I heard.
@txhp Apologies, it's been a while since I've brushed up on my music school jargon lol. I only trigger my kicks, usually because at 270 bpm the CAD KB-12 bass drum mics become very muddy. I'm still using a fairly out-dated program for tracking here without a sound sample replacement option. Also I still have yet to find a venue sound tech that can get a remotely decent sound using a bass drum mic.
Blast beats have been going back all the way disnce the 80's british hardcore and crust punk scene, and Napalm Death, obviously. But Mike invented a new style which is the style most prevelent in the death metal genre as a whole.
that really heavy blast tires my arm out hella fast but the finger thing not whole wrist is must easier and energy saving but gonna try to put a band together someone tell me which one i should do ?
No one said he invented blast beats. They said he was the first to focus on the HIGH END of the blast beat. Watch the whole section of the video and you'll see why Jason Suecof said that.
I read all of these comments, and wonder if anyone even paid attention to what the video was about....What they were talking about him inventing, was using the left hand on the hi-hat and using the right hand on the snare, because he says " the snare used to get lost"....thats why he started one way, and finished the other, then he said " you hear the difference?"...I am not saying what he did or didn't invent, but that is what the video is about, is playing left hand hat, and right hand snare
what do you call that DDrum Red trigger on the right hand side of the snare drum? You can see it as soon as the video starts. Just because they are not pumping it through the monitors doesn't mean they are not using it in the recording, and I see triggers on the toms and the bass drums. I am sure it was recorded using triggers (your telling me there are just on there by accident?).
@MBeroose Apologies, I seemingly had you mistaken for yet another drumming 'expert' on here making brash comments about utilizing triggers. That is a very good point you make.
