5:50 Gift is one of my favoriteGerman words because it means something completely different in both languages. If you give a gift (das geschenk) in English, it's a good thing and people are grateful for it. Not so in German where gift means poison. The weird thing is they both come from the same Proto-germanic root word. I think the root word means something given and the English meaning lingers in words like mitgift.
Ok thanks for being patient with my geeking out. if anyone has something to add or a correction please feel free to post a reply.

“Alles für die Katz.” I’m in California and my German boyfriend and I adopted four stray kittens last year. Now, our house resembles a kitty flop house. He said he didn’t think he’d ever have indoor cats, and they’ve turned out to be homebodies who don’t roam far or for long. I will make good use of this phrase. Danke schöne!

I thought 'Alles für die Katz' comes from, when you make a very delicious meal and then unfortunately it all falls down to the bottom. But quickly the cat is there out of nowhere and eat it. So all is for the cat.
So we use it, when you get so much work on something and then it doesn't fit or work. Dann war alles umsonst, Alles für die Katz' 😃

Ich habe ein T-Shirt von Krautsalat, It is not the yellow of the egg, und meine Bekannte hier in England fragte mich was das bedeutet. Nach einigem Erklaeren hat sie es dann auch kapiert, aber verstanden hat sie es nicht. Genauso wie "I see black for you", welches ich auch auf einem t-shirt habe.

4:22 that’s my favourite part, in Italian we say also “Mi sono tolto un peso dal petto!” , very similiar to the German one, which means “I removed a duty from my chest” I think 😂
