500 Greatest Generals in History: 516-401

- I created a query that looks at every battle article in Wikipedia and identifies the military commander who won the battle.
This video shows the 516th to 401st military commanders that won the most battles.
List of battles won by general: docs.google.co...
Rules
• Battles are included only if they have a Wikipedia article
Methodology:
I used Wikipedia as a directory of battles:
1. I created a query with Wikidata Query to get the list of all articles tagged as "battle" by Wikipedia. This gives me about 12,000 battles
2. I downloaded the data that is included in the top right hand table of every of those Wikipedia article. I did it for the following versions of Wikipedia: English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Greek, Turkish, Serbo-Croatian, Japanese, Danish, Norwegian, Slovakian, Dutch, Polish, Hungarian, Czech, Hindi, Hebrew, Basque, Bulgarian, Romanian, Catalan, Finnish, Swedish, Vietnamese, Persian, Indonesian, Korean
3. I cleaned up the data on Excel to remove double entries :
4. I created an index of countries with their predecessor states:
Is there any point in ranking them 400-516 if they all won 4 battles?
Importances of the wars are different.
It's because 517th probably won 3
@@adolfstalin2363 That's very subjective. But nonetheless, I kind of expected some to have won 6-8.
It's probably the number of battles won vs how much battles they lost.
A lot of them most likely won more than 4. Jan Sobieski for example definitely won a couple more than that but English Wikipedia doesn't have articles about those battles. This whole list is flawed.
At minute 2:44 there is "Gonzalo de Cordoba", but that is a picture of Cesare Borgia

@@nekhlioudovbolkonsky2901 I know the book you are talking about. Its a historical novel but not very accurate (he never rose up in Sparta for example). But anyway: Parmenion was a Macedonian general and basically the 2nd in command of Philipp II. and his son, Alexander the Great.

It is good that South America has representation among these generals, maybe missing one from the War of the Pacific between Chile and Perú/Bolivia (1879-1883), i think General Baquedano from Chile won 4 battles:
- Battle of Los Ángeles
- Battle of Tacna
- Battle of Chorrillos
- Battle of Miraflores
There´s also the Battle of Arica, but that one probably doesn't count because Baquedano did not command directly and put colonel Pedro Lagos on charge.
I´ll guess Baquedano was not here because he only became a general after his victory on Los Ángeles, kinda unfortunate.

Does this also count sieges or just field battles? Because if it also counts sieges then there is a lot of information missing.
Is there any Norwegian generals on the list. Theres many Norwegian born generals who has won many battles.
Not many. There are a ton of Swedish generals missing. Stenbock that won at Helsingborg only have two independent wins. Rhensköld spent most of his time as a wing commander for Charles xii and only have one win.
