  • In our latest Elder Scrolls video we discuss a which game had better Daedric Quests, Skyrim or Oblivion?
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an open world action role-playing video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It is the fifth main installment in The Elder Scrolls series and was released worldwide on November 11, 2011. The game's main story revolves around the player character and their quest to defeat Alduin the World-Eater, a dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world. The videogame is set two hundred years after the events of Oblivion, and takes place in the fictional province of Skyrim.
At FudgeMuppet, we uncover the elder scrolls lore secrets that make this game so sensational, and also have many discussions regarding our thoughts on the various games. In this video we're going to be diving into the Daedric Princes and their quests in both Skyrim and Oblivion. I love Oblivion so much, perhaps more than Skyrim (depending on my mood), so I was quite surprised when I got as objective as possible and laid all the quests out on paper to decide which game was the winner! Be sure to let us know your favorite Daedric Prince Elder Scrolls quests in the comments!

You know what might've made Skyrim's Vaermina quest even cooler? Actually experiencing the nightmare problem yourself if you slept in Dawnstar's inn. Maybe it takes you to a small pocket of Quagmire to be tormented by high-level daedra, and when you die, you wake up.

Anyone else notice that Peryite is usually the "nicest" of the princes in his quests? In Oblivion, Peryite sends you to rescue a bunch of idiots who tried to summon him. In Skyrim he sends you to take out a former champion who turned cult leader. If it wasn't for the fact that he's the god of disease, he'd be downright saintly compared to the rest.

What I actually liked about Skyrim Daedric Princes is that not all of the them were present by human-like creature statues (like Molag Bal, Namira and Vaermina) or even had an graven image at all (like Mephala or Hermaeus Mora if we're speaking about their quests). And even statues had a variety of image and size. It was a nice design touch and gave them a sense of diversity.

If you wander around the plains near Rorikstead you’ll find a giant with Gleda, the goat you sold.
If you go to Witchmist grove, you’ll find the hagraven you almost got married to.
If you didn’t go through the whole quest using speech, then you would’ve found out why the quest is fun.

Awesome face off. I've been playing the games same Daggerfall. I can say that every generation cuts out something that I like from the previous ones (insane number of factions and wall climbing, plus day night cycle npc schedule cut from Daggerfall to Morrowind, all but basic factions plus open cities (until DLC added knights) cut from Morrowind to Oblivion (but they added day/night npc schedules back in!), and mages, along with the feeling of true guild progression cut from Oblivion to Skyrim) but I still enjoy each new generation for what it improves on. Tighter questing, more “alive” npc's, more fluid leveling systems and combat mechanics. This video was a great reminder that nostalgia can make things way better than reality.

Nostalgia has jack shit to do with this, the older games ARE BETTER, and the fact that everyone now days say that the only right way to play skyrim is with mods, and normaly most of the recommended mods are just adding back mechanics from the older games that skyrim stripped down to become more "casual friendly" also speaks volumes that skyrim popularity from back then was because it was the new shinyiest toy of the moment, just like today its because this game has been relaunched for every single eletronic imaginable and because the mod authors managed to keep the game alive by essentisly morphing it into a entirely mew game.

Interacting with other followers of the daedric princes without having to murder them was also something that I think gave the daedra a more interesting position in the world. In Skyrim most deadric gods do not have any followers or have their followers only to betray them.

I don't want that. One thing I appreciate about Skyrim was it had a really long playthrough. It was unrealistic in world that say you can be DB and TG while also be a Companion BUT it didn't make you make a new character for that either. There is part of me that really enjoys how confusing the Daedra and Aedra must have it when the Hero of Kvatch or Dragonborn die since almost everyone has a claim to him.
But I'd rather have that than need to make a new character and slog through everything again just to get Azura's Star. Plus almost all the Daedra are evil so who reallly wants to quest that long for any of them?
Now that said I wouldn't mind a flip side to every faction. Say I go Fighter's guild so that means no DB or TG but instead you exterminate them. You join the cult of the 9s or you pick a daedra but either way you attack the other members and defile their religious artifacts.
My biggest bitch in Skyrim is smithing is so good most of the daedric artifacts are just that artifacts. They should scale up with the player so that when you get them you don't just stick them in a display case. That and a lot of them just suck anyways. Oh thanks for this mace i don't use because i don't use maces Molag.

I have to highly disagree. I've done the Oblivion ones recently, and most of them aren't that great in my opinion. Some of them just felt generic and lack luster. It's not Morrowind levels where it just felt like any other quest, but Skyrim did but in a lot more effort in making them click with their princes.

  • @537monster

In Oblivion, the daedra quests seemed to be really cool, but only in contrast to the more boring quests you’d find in Oblivion (not knocking the game, it’s one of my favorites from Bethesda and my introduction into elder scrolls).
Skyrim, in my opinion, did a much better job of actually capturing the identity of each Daedric Prince. They also felt a lot more natural. There was something so weird about just stumbling upon a cult to Malacath or Vermina. At least in Skyrim, it felt like something almost led you to an area rather than you literally searching out Daedric shrines.
Like the Molag Bal quest introduction was beyond perfect. You think you’re helping out this random Vigilant of Stendarr clear out a house full of Daedra. If you haven’t played the game before, you might even think you are starting a whole new Daedra hunter questline by joining the Vigilants.
Then suddenly Molag Bal starts talking, literally shaking the house like a demonic force of some kind. Then forcing you to kill the man who asked for your help.

Honestly, I think I prefer the idea of not knowing that you are going in on a Daedra quest until its to late. I feel like one point I have to give Skyrim is moving away from the 'Shrine' mechanic. Outside of the quests themselves, I feel like it got super repetitive that ALL of the Daedric quests are tied to these shrines that you have to make an offering to. Whereas in Skryim, the Daedric quests generally aren't 'advertised' as Daedric quests. For most of the Skyrim quests, you don't know you're even DOING a Daedric quest until after you begin, so there's a fun surprise factor in it.
Plus, I have to give Sheogorath's Skyrim quest some extra points for the fun callbacks to Oblivion and the sheer novelty of actually MEETING the previous PC of an Elder Scrolls game.

It has the lowest attack power of any two handed weapon, even lower than an iron great sword, and while it has the speed of a single hander, it also has the shorter reach while at the same time keeping you from having a shield, all the while it's damage can't be upgraded via smithing. It's endless heal enchantment is nice, but because it's otherwise so weak compared to literally anything else you can use if you invest in smithing, it takes the enjoyment out of fights by making you close to invincible while making the fights 2 or 3 times longer.

this comment will probably not be noticed but can we get a conspiracy theory about Jyggalag being the main focus for elder scrolls 6? As far as I know he's running around free in oblivion thanks to the hero of Kvatch separating him from Sheogorath, and as he was originally the Daedric god of order wouldnt it make sense for him to put his hand into the current situation that has befallen Tamerial due to the civil war thats breaking out in the Empire, the Dunmer's homeland being shattered because of red mountain, Hammerfell civil war againts the Thalmor even Skyrim of civil war of course. He can directly gain alot of power since everyone would want peace and order in their lives which are things he can directly provide compared to everyone else, after all he is the Lord of Order. Its hard to think up of a main enemy you can really see without it being defaulted to Thalmor invading, or the Dragons coming. And going back in time is kinda outa the question as its basically considered tradition to at least move each series some time after the previous entry so it wouldnt be a bad idea to pull an oldie out that is still alive afterall.

Tamriel, Daedra actively can not do much of anything thanks to Martin and since we have 0 knowledge on what Jyg is fully capable of outside of lore, its very possible the lunatic might know a way into tamriel that the others dont know about. its basically guesswork and outside of shanking more thalmor I dont know what else an enemy we could get.
