The same reason all their other songs that should have been hits weren't and the same reasons everyone else's songs that should have been hits or bigger hits weren't: people are effing stupid, have no taste and are driven buy the dictates of shitty fashions. In other words, you unerringly support utter crap like slagdonna, the S/A/W shit machine, Spamhead Ballet, Madness, Cure, Weller, Sting, Phil Collins, Wet Wet Wet, Bros, dumb novelty records and even decent people with underwhelming songs (George Michael) or ones that have yucky songs &/or lousy voices (Tina Turner, Whitney Houston)! No decent artist allowed to have a chance more than a few songs that get 'luckier' than all their others. This China C song like all of them deserved to be much higher! But people are twats!
The things about China Crisis that separates it from most bands is the musical talent, the Amazing Bass playing, and the Clarinet? Together the Harmonies make for Amazing Music 🎶 🎵 ❤ ♥
@@ajs41 It so isn't. This song, 'Arizona Sky', 'St. Saviour Square', 'The Highest High', 'You Did Cut Me', 'No More Blue Horizons (Fool Fool Fool)', 'All My Prayers' (awesome & rudely cancelled 1989 3rd single from their last 80s album) & 'Scream Down At Me' (plus many things left on the albums) are superior, as good as 'AAW' is.
@@kyachdistent1301 All My Prayers would not have been a hit. It is a good song but without a remix it would not have charted. More album track than contender for successful single.
@@eightiesmusic1984 Bullshit, it's perfect in the version that turned up on the finished album. Anyway, it's not like it helped the singles beforehand did it, nor the 2 chalked up to follow the 1st 2 off the previous album from 1986. Even 'The Highest High' missed out and most people went for that album. The year is 1989 and no one is going to chart ANY CC song with the likes of slagdonna, Kylie Minogur, Tina Turner, Wet Wet Wet, Bros, Jive Bunny & c/rap and all else suffocating the charts. Another great song! These true artists don't care about everyone and make their own way..They are always true to themselves...I will always be an 80' s girl and listen to their wonderful songs... needful in these days!!! R.I.P Kevin Wilkinson...
A certain sensibility and connection with eternal issues like dealing with change and being open and honest with each other. Good lyricists and nice melodic tunes. Thank you guys...
the biggest tragedy is that so many great songs from the 80's didn't get into the top 40, this being an example proving that the record buying public oftenly got it wrong.
Ciao, personally i love this kind of music since my teen ages in the 80's, have two albums on CD here, thank you for this wonderful music, many greetings from brunswick in Germany and please stay safe 🙃
What's this all about this song along with christian, hanna hanna, working with fire and steel, black man ray, and african and white pure pop gems that should have been top ten hits among the most under rated 80s bands ever without a doubt.
I absolutely loved this when it was first released. It got a lot of airplay, will never understand why it wasn’t a hit. To be honest they’ve never written a duff song - very underrated songwriters. Looking forward to their 40th anniversary concert 👍🏻
Really like their sound. As a child i thought this typical synth music from the U..K mostly, sounded so grim. Ffw a decade or 3... i just love it. The grimness is nothing compared to what we see nowadays. I love how during the eighties there was so much experimenting going on with vocals. The balls they had to keep pushing. Also they had great content lyrically. Not line after line of meaningless teenage issues.
Grim? But that's a compliment, it means writing about serious issues and unlike the likes of Weller's shit group The Jam and dumb idiots like Madness & Spamhead Ballet, China C had serious things to say. I don't get this 'grim' thing, guitar-based music is grim. Not only does it always sound more dated than synth lines, but it usually gets boring quick. And don't term this 'typical synth'. Nothing 'typical' about this awesome tune or EVERYBODY could do it. Typical guitar-based crap is what I'd term Bon Jovi and other shit from the 80s without an important sound, or who are just bad jokes. And typical disco crap is what the likes of slagdonna the untalented does. And dumb kids music like Wham! & Michael Jackson and icky ear-splitting love ballad bull from Whit Houston, Tina Turner and all those boring women, then the awful S/A/W machine. And more guitar-driven icky crap like Phil Collins, Sting. Yuck. Thank God for REAL talent like China Crisis!
This is the first time I have heard this song. I feel it is more important now than it was then. There is more mystery now and it has a degree of darkness

The album probably sold well😊
Same applies to Arizona Sky to me their best ever song
Agree
Going watching them in Chester next saturday 5th Oct 2024 cannot wait 😀
The days when everybody loved music and regardless life itself.
Fantastic Liverpool Band
I found this gem while browsing through old playlists from John Peel (on BFBS in 1983). What a lovely tune ❤
Love the bass line.
Love bassy heads that will appreciate such sweet things.
Bass player Gazza Johnson is still in the band
and also the bassline of "African & White"~~~~~~
Pięknie wrócić w ten wspaniały dawny czas
Something wonderful about this song..❤
Steve Levy's oboe, saxophone and flugel horn is pure perfection. He gave China Crisis an unique sound. The bass in this song is so cool!
Simply beautiful melody
Absolutely . Loved his oboe , and the bass is awesome . !
Kelvin Wilkinson, hero of mine.. SK ( Scotland ) Seen them in Glasgow Uni and Royal Albert hall, during the 1980s. Absolutey brilliant....

Great band, and even better musician's, and song writers....Greetings from Ireland
Melancholic, 80’s, great time, this song is still on my mind a lot ❤
Good song...what memories!!!
La escuchare una y mil veces!!nunca me cansare, una joya
One of the best Liverpool bands to grace the 80s era. Hits like African and white, Christian made them great songsmiths.
African and White is by far their best song in my opinion. Especially when you consider it's from 1981.
great song indeed
but then we can't forget
Christian and that monster hit wishful thinking

The first 2 albums from China crisis are just timeless still playing them today
Absolutely love them still fab today saw them sat night at the tapestry arts Bradford
Even my mam in the 80s liked this song. Amazig bass line.
The soundtrack of my childhood ❤
40 years later and this song is still relevant. It could have actually been written in 2023.
Grew up listening to China Crisis.. love this song.
Wow I have forgotten just how good these lads are.
A brilliant song from a flawless album.
Awesome bass line!!
It says everything when the great Walter becker chooses to produce an album. I loved this band since African and white. I'm nearly 61 now
I don't like pop music but China Crisis , the most underrated band in the UK musical history, the poetry of their songs will be in my heart forever.
80's is the best
Simply the best I love um
absolutley spot on
“Underrated” to you not to those who know their class!
absolutely 😊

"Wishful Thinking", "African & White", "Black Man Ray"......
Only started listening ta these over a year ago just brilliant
"Christian" is also a beautiful track. I recommend the extended version available on TH-cam.
Maybe cos there there the best band ever
Ditto 🙏💖

They remind me in some ways of xtc, great songs, never had the sales to match, never understood why
its a great song
