Fred Bear spent his life making archery accessible to the "everyman" by making bows affordable and reliable. Ordering a custom bow from someone like Nels Grumley took some serious cash. He did to archery what Ford did for mass transportation. Great post!
I remember looking at the bows Fred actually shot in his videos. They looked a lot more like the widow limbs, narrow and deep, than the bows they actually sold. There was always a part in his videos where they would toss a bow to the ground on a talus slope, or use the bow aggressively to ford a river. You could tell that what people wanted when they bought those bows was a bow that could take abuse. They didn't have chronographs, so performance wasn't really a thing. By the time the Trad thing got underway in the 80s, there were a lot of cheap Chronies around. People got excited over a few fps, and that was still a thing until about 10 years ago. Then gap became the norm, and people didn't care about speed much, since they were hitting.
I absolutely love my Black Hunter longbow! I have shot custom bows and own a vintage Bear kmag. The Black Hunter performs with the best of them. I will get me a custom longbow in the future, but I'll keep enjoying the "cheapy" for now.
Thank you Jason for this video. I am 68 1/2 and have never owned a custom bow, would I like to - yes but the family budget never really lent itself to high priced bow purchases. I grew up idolizing Fred Bear and consequently fell into shooting Bear bows and using a lot of Bear equipment , most of them I purchased 2nd hand at pretty low prices. Mostly shoot to hunt and don’t get into the showmanship aspect of the whole thing (can’t really afford to anyway). If (and I doubt) my Production bows don’t perform as well as other high priced custom bows then I just take that as another element of the challenge, which is what makes the whole sport so satisfying anyway. This gentleman is 100% spot on! Thank you for your willingness to speak the truth. Not everybody can go and have a custom bow made. Heck even some off the rack bows like Bear etc are beyond what a lot of people can spend. These inexpensive bows do more good for archery than people give them credit for. Almost anybody can buy a bow for fun and for hunting and that is important. There is someone out there using these inexpensive bows to put meat on the table and feeding their family.
I'm very thankful for the content you put out. You being the stature you are with a short draw length like me too is the reason I picked up traditional archery. I honestly for a long time didn't think with my shorter draw length and a lighter pound traditional bow that it'd be sufficient enough for hunting, and I couldn't be any happier that I was so wrong lol

I have a $150 recurve. I have a $500 semi-custom and a $1,200 custom long bow. I shoot the same with all 3. But yes, I love the custom bow the best because it is beautiful. But they all shoot equally.

My second or third bow was a Sammick sage. Absolutely loved it. Sold it to my brother because I lended it to him to get into the sport. He shot it very well so I sold it to him. Very smooth pull and accurate as well. Do not be afraid to buy one. I've heard excellent things about the black hunter as well and will get my hands on one eventually. The only major problem with these bows is the bow buying addiction that can come afterwards. Especially if you're getting into this sport young like I did lol
Jason, I killed my Canadian Cow Elk with a #50 Samick sage. I have a "nicer" bow now but man I don't need it. Great video, saying something that needed saying.
I agree, i grew up with a Martin Jaguar Recurve and now I shoot a Black Hunter Longbow. My dream now is a Bear Kodiak. Personally I don't feel the need to ever have a custom. Although to each there own there are some nice ones out there
Great video, Jason. That Black Hunter isn't fancy, but it's smooth, fast, quiet! And, like all of them, only as accurate as the person pulling the string.
Literally just bought a Samick sage a week ago. It’s my first trad bow. I’ve only shot a handful of arrows (in my basement) and already enjoy it more than my compounds. Can get multiple of these for the price of one decent compound, so it’s a great option. I went down the trad bow path because I wanted to rely less on accessories/bow press/etc. Happy so far even if my form and everything is trash right now. Still fun…and now i understand why the elder statesmen, if you will, at the range I’m a member to only shoot traditional. I get it.

Thanks for this video I bought 4 sages for my family and we love them have thought I should up great because everyone says it’s a beginner bow. I love the way it shoots love the price and that it lasts forever and dose not need to go to the shop to get the string changed ex…. Great to hear from someone with as much experience as you say it’s great and don’t need to replace it. I would need more years to get a custom anyways to learn from experience what I wish was different
Yep excellent bows. We have 3 in my house and have best the tar out of them bowfishing and hunting and 3d shoots etc. They are solid durable, great shooting bows. I can not find one single flaw with a samick sage! Other than the snooty attitude of some that thing it's not worth because it's mass produced. I love the sage and would not hesitate to hunt with one if I shot recurves.
I clicked on this video because I saw you holding my sage in the thumbnail and I was expecting to hear you tell me why my bow sucks. Boy was I surprised with the content of the video😅. I bought the sage on a budget but I’ve been so satisfied with it I haven’t even considered looking to upgrade. I have a few set of limbs at different poundage and it has threaded intakes for sights, quivers etc… thanks for not being a snobby purist and giving an honest review.

The sage is an amazing bow! We have 4 of them here at the house and they take a beating in bow fishing boats, spend weeks in hot cars, and shoot perfect everyrime. They are like the tank of the tradbow world. Love them

I shot 6 years of 1000 arrow weeks with my beat up 40 pound bear Montana. A custom bowyer could shave off some tip weight, fine tiller, other a different color beside black, help a local bowyer.
I have only ever shot mass produced bows. A little more then a year ago I landed on the Win and Win Black Wolf. It's an ilf and as close to a custom as I have ever come. The adjustability and available limbs as well as a failure grip makes it a wonderful fit for me. That said, I still want to shoot a custom or two and dream of a beautiful hand crafted work of art. It will happen but for now the Wolf is an amazing piece of equipment. We all have our own priorities, our own budgets, and preferences. I don't see any being better or worse. We are out doing what we enjoy. We need to just get along.
My uncle has a bunch of old mass produced bows, anywhere from, Bear, Herters, and Shakespeare , so many and out of all the bows he has had, the only bow that has broke or in this instance delaminated, was his Black Widow from the 80s.
I completely agree. However, I will throw caution about something you didn't mention. I have heard plenty of instances when, especially the Black Hunter, cheaper bows are mislabeled on the draw weight. So just pay mind to that. You might order a #50 bow, that is labeled #50, but might only draw #45, or what have you. That being said, I have shot Bear for years and have never had any issues. Just love em. I got a 45# @28" samick sage when I was 14 (first trad bow) and I still shoot that bow today. The only issue with it is people like me with longer than 29" draws cus boy does it stack fast like 4-5lbs at the last inch for my drawlength. Still love the bow but my freak draw length has made it a challenge. That Samick sage was probably the best purchase I ever made they really work awesome. Now I'm getting a #50@29" toelke SSLR in a few months because many production bows are just less consistent for people with longer drawlengths because of stacking. That issue is largely eliminated in Bears and some other production bows. I believe Sammick had a 64" production bow for longer drawlengths too so you're absolutely right. Production bows work awesome.
Great point! I think most mass bows are designed for 28 and under draw lengths to meet the majority of people. i have never felt a bow stack as i only draw 26 inches..lol
Amend brother ! Excellent sermon……I’ve shot many over the counter mass produce bows and have ordered custom made bows that were made to my specific draw and shooting style. In the end the difference is minimal, now my only caution is to be careful of non laminated hard wood Chinese made risers. I almost lost an eye when the beautifully dyed soft wood and bamboo riser literally delaminated and exploded during my draw.
Yep lots of great custom and mass produced bows out there. I jave seen both come apart as well. Fortunately today bows blowing up are very rare with the amazing glues available today
I have a Samick Sage in my collection, it is a fantastic bow, I use 30" carbon feathered, 500 spines. The arrows I use fly like darts. Its a absolute gem of a bow, I have extras plungers etc, BUT still shoot off the shelf as I enjoy it, and to achieve a side plate group at 22m is a breeze with this bow, it is not only a starter bow as some call it, you can take plenty species of African game with this bow, its a lovely bow.
If you look at an early custom house like Bighorn, in the Asbell, and Behn days, all the commercial bows didn't even have shelves on them, they were designed to be shot off an elevated rest. But Fred's personal bow wasn't. Asbell would sell you a shelf low to your hand, and other features designed to make the bow shoot better instinctive. It made a big difference. But now that we are back to shooting sights, there is a tremendous opportunity to get some of those old bows out of the cupboard and shoot them, gap or sights, and get them back in the game.
I adore my mass produced Sage variant, most of all because of how easy it is to change out limbs for different draw weights. They also take a whole lot of game. If I wanted to go competition I could add stabilizers etc too, and all for less than a single custom from most of the custom guys. I still intend to buy a couple of custom bows one day when the money is right, but I don't think I will ever sell this one

You’ve got to ask yourself a question. What does that “mass” bow do that the custom bow does better? The answer is NOTHING. They all do the same damn thing and they do it well. I own several custom bows, big money bows. I own like 8 “cheapy” bows. The one I find myself going to all the time is the Black Hunter. It handles great, shoots great. What more could you want. Slam banging it around the woods or on the boat. Great video. Great advice.
This is a great video just straight up real talk, and the truth that you don't hear too often! I have a Lwano Wolf bow that only cost me $106 including tax and it looks just like the bow in your hands, probably the exact same thing but copied from China (Just like there are several different brands of the Black Hunter bow.) with same riser, limbs, etc! (The SWA Spyder takedown recurve bow also looks a lot like it.) I would put my Lwano Wolf bow against any bow out there - I'm just not a great archer so any problems with accuracy is a user problem, not a bow problem. I also have made 3 of my own Molegabet bows (a 50lb, 40lb, & 35lb) out of Red Oak boards and I enjoy shooting them as much, some times more, than any of the 4 bought bows I have! One day I may have a real bowyer make me a bow, but don't really have the extra money to do that, and I can make my own for under $25 and they turned out fine. (I will admit that it took me a few attempts to build my own bows, but finally after viewing a lot of video's on how to make them, reading books, and trial and error I got pretty good at it.) Some of us can not afford to buy a custom bow. I like the mass produced bows I myself started with a self now as a kid my first recurve bow was an Internature bow which was made by samick way before the sage was ever a thought killed my first mule deer with that the most expensive bow i own is a bear super grizzly.
Great video, for me this year I ended up in a position where I shot one way for a while and started learning a different drawing technique and now Im shooting my Samick Sage I bought 10 years ago because I reshaped the grip into a low wrist grip and my 900 dollar longbow is not in that shape and its too small to reshape so now Im shooting a when I bought it 120 dollar bow haha... Eventually I ll order a nice bow just because I like certain materials in my bows (micarta denser woods) but for now the Samick Sage is shooting harder and much more accurate and that is what got my turkey and hope to get every thing else in the fall with it.
Well said brother, I’ve shot custom to 3 different black widows, Bear, Martin and had the bottom fall out from under me sold most my stuff. I cried for selling my favorite longbow Moad thunder stick. II’m now shooting a 64” $200 dollar Korean made D bow. It shoots fast and straight. But I want a custom ASL with what I want. My name favorite bible text on it and it’s going with me when I die. I saved my money and ordered it.
I do not. Never heard of them. But with the processes mass produced bows are made with today I bet its a great how for the monet. Since the sage came out many never companies have private labeled similar bows
A good point one does not have to “upgrade” from one of those under $200 three piece bows to kill consistently for many years. I had a 2006 PSE Fire Flite compound that I got cheap while working at Cabela’s. I only recently updated to a PRIME Black 3 (2020 bow) late last summer after 14 years. Mostly because I wanted the parallel limbs to put a bow stand on since I hunt a lot from the ground. As I have mentioned a few times I plan on going with a 3 piece takedown like the Sages or Black Hunter or similar bows or I may look on the used market for Bear 🐻 Bow 🏹. I checked Lancaster Archery 🏹 Supply and their recurves are $399-$730. Not too bad and as long as one takes care of those bows like anything else they can last a lifetime and be passed down even. Just like with rifles, one could use and shoot accurately with something in the Savage Axis, Ruger American, Winchester XPR, Remington 700 ADL price class and use it forever to take multiple game to fill the freezer and never need a custom rifle or a high end factory offering.

Sammick Sages are great little bows for the money, it's what I recommend to new members at our field archery club if they are looking to get something when they are starting out, well unless they want to go full Olympic recurve or compound of course. At the weekend I was explaining point on distance to someone who was shooting their Sage and we went to the 80 yard target to find theirs. It was 80 yards dead on, the power in that wee bow honestly baffled me as that is further back than others at my club that shoot Border Bows Covert Hunters with HEX 9 limbs at higher poundages. Those bows cost in the thousands. They may not be as pretty, or as flashy, but they do the job just fine, plus they are great for kids, as you pointed out you can get higher poundage limbs so as they get older the bow can grow with them. I have never had the chance to use a Bear bow, but I have no doubt they are great bows to shoot as well.
@@SamkoTradBow We actually have a fair few shooting trad. but there is a nice mix of styles. We are hoping to add a full 3d course as well as our existing field course in the next year, so I imagine that will encourage even more into giving trad. a try as well. While it can be frustrating at times mostly it's just a lot of fun!

There's actually a classic and simplistic vibe with mass produced bows especially well made, time tested models. I'm drawn to them even with a few custom bows that I own and constantly find myself browsing catalogs of bear, damon howatt and hoyt.
I love my Samick. I have a couple nice bows that are locally made by hand at Shatterproof Archery here in Colorado. Their bows are more reflex/deflex longbows and are fantastic. BUT! I find myself turning back to my Samick Sage and SAS Maverick. The Gluark Black Hunter bow is pretty decent too. But find what works for you.
I do want a custom bow just to have. I shoot a bear bow mostly now, and I am pretty good with that grizzly. I have some older Ben Pearsons, and a few older bear bows as well. I got my daughters and my girlfriend Samick bows. They are pretty good shooting bows. My draw length is 32 inches and, the bear bows can take my draw length, and I haven’t found anything better yet. The Sage is made in Korea not China. I agree that the Sage and other rebranded Sages are great bows. Replacing the Dacron string with Fast Flight will really wake that bow up. Many older Bear, Martin etc. bows can be picked up at garage sales and thrift stores for little money and make great bows. Good luck with your move!
Yep love the samick sage! And love gow there are bows available at those low prices that work great. Not wveryone can afford a custom bow or wants to spend that kind of money to try traditional
I shot a sage and it was a good shooter. I don't own 1 personally i shoot a pse coyote 2 mainly but i may get a samick sage 1 of these days in the near future.
Anybody know anything about the Monsour Archery bows? Please, I'm thinking about getting one, because they are one of the few that are within my budget.
My pal who shoots the power bows, 80 and up, 3 piece recurves. He has blown up a half dozen bows. Even the custom bows can't take the heat. He used to be a Can dealer for Widow. He blew up several of those, Whippens. That guy in BC who was all the rage for a while. Etc... So you can't even get the heavy bows in a Sammick and you really need someone who specializes in heavy bows, if that is what you want. (He shoots plenty heavy arrows). I actually think the problem is he leaves his bows strung, as recommenced. However, heavy bows don't seem to be able to take it.
Absolutely, with one caveat - you can buy some accuracy at the higher levels of the sport but for 95% of us mass produced bows are good. I do like supporting bowyers if I can though. Good vid!
I had to choose between a stalker stickbow that was preowned and a bear td kodiak. Bothe at a similar priece point. Ended up with the bear , just because stuff ia replaceable. If something breaks u pay up to 400 to get a pair of limbs. If i would have to get new limbs for a stalker there would be hundreds of dollars in shipping / import alone.
Use a Compound like a Gen--X or Genesis--X without a sight to lessen the pain with a bow with the finger savers as well as the tab/glove since this is like one of the last models of compound that can be fired without a release tool and works fine without a sight. This is if the pain is not so bad you have to use a crossbow/get the special license.

@@SamkoTradBow A more traditional type of crossbow is what might help if he wanted to get closer to what he did, he could probably get the special permits to hunt with a crossbow. if he is too far gone in arthritis then a gun is fine I do gun hunting too for some animals as it is not legal to hunt with a bow like a few smaller game birds in season or others I am not ready to bow hunt traditional like Deer and would not want a compound as it would be nearly the same as hunting with a 20 gauge shotgun with best distance 40--50 yards and with aiming would be similar since I would probably go with the older small circle with dot type T sight that is still made today by Chinese companies.
Modern custom bows are mainly pimping out exercises of questionable taste. It used to be that custom bows were sold on performance, but there are too many makers all of a sudden, and mostly they are selling fancy wood, and designs. Who was the last bowyer who sold his gear on the basis it was better?

Probably can buy a good recurve off the shelf. But I have a PSE Heritage that can’t be tuned, it comes off the string with the tail kicked hard to my left, with large enough feathers it’ll fishtail back to straight. But this bow can’t be tuned to shoot true!
That sounds like bad arrow spine to me. Never met a bow that could get an arrow to fly. Before you spend money on another bow try a different arrow spine
I love my custom bows but I also have a sage and a black hunter all are awsome bows sure I prefer my custom hybrid longbow but I swear those sages and black hunters are bulletproof no matter how I've abused them they just take it
I have a Martin X-200 that's 45 yrs old been through hell too, shoots as hard and fast as the day it was made.but due to a shoulder injury I need a lighter bow but there's no way I can afford another howatt even a used one so that leaves me with the sub $200 range of imports and if not for them idd be $hit out of luck.i think the sanlida royal x-8 one piece recurve will be this PO BOY's next bow.
So I collect knives. I will compare this to the knife realm. Some people look down on the cheaper knives. I have seen videos implying that if you aren't carrying a $200, $500, or even $1000 dollar knife it's not worth it. My most expensive knife was $250, but it's not even one of the knives I carry anymore. I carry a $25, $50, and $80 knives (yes I carry three) when I'm not working, and a $40 knife when I am. Why? Because they do the job. Yes some cheap knives are junk, but most will do what you need. I imagine bows to be very similar. You'll get different materials, maybe something hand made, by paying more. There's guys that look down on anything less because it makes them feel superior. A super cheap one could be dangerous, but even relatively cheap ones will do exactly what you need it to. Oh and another similarity I see is the variety. Yes in knives there's only so many materials and blade shapes, and in bows there's only so many materials and styles, but both can be found in very unique combinations. Oh and there's the fact they're both fun and practical. Well crap this could get expensive if I keep finding similarities and start collecting bows too. 😂😂 I do have my grandpa's old compound and long bow, as well as a cross bow. I definitely would like a couple of others, but... Yeah it's looking like I might end up collecting these as well. Lol
One of my favorite things is to go up against a custom bow shooter during a tournament with my black hunter recurve and totally smoke them at 40 yards... dead center and stacking one arrow on top of the other. As I totally reiterate in anyone that I'm teaching to shoot. It's not the bow... It's the Archer
I am lefty! I'm gonna use that Martin mamba to kill a deer and a hog in 2023 as that will be my 30th year traditional and that Martin is the only bow I've owned that I never killed a big game animal with and I've owned it for 30 years!
Bear makes some of the best but watch out for Bear bows made from 2010 to 2015/2016 as the risers on some models tended to fall apart due to poor quality selection of the type of wood used. Bearpaw also makes very similar bows since the late 1960's after they stopped carrying the Ben Person bows, often used in Europe for 3D shooting.
Yes your right ,if you do your homework and good setup ,arrow weight and practice .you can take any game or any target.. Custom bows are nice too but you need to know exactly what you want before jumping in custom bow land. A lot of man hours go into a custom bow and the sky the limit. Just learn to shoot well that's the main thing
"Is there any reason to believe it won't put the arrows..." That is the big deal with archery, there is no way to measure accuracy bow to bow. It is fundamentally all about accuracy, but we have no standardized measurement, as we do with Ransom rests, or benchrests. The assumption is that every bow out there is every bit as accurate, with properly spined arrows. That seems very unlikely to me, but it is where we are.
It amazes me how caught up in brand names and cost that people get. Especially with traditional bows which are entirely dependant on your ability to shoot and has nothing to do with the quality of the bow. You can spend thousands of dollars on a fantastic recurve but it's worthless if you don't know how to shoot it.

Yes/No. Custom bows may have overall better and more solid quality in all areas like riser and limbs. Better gluing, degree of tolerances etc. Custom bows can take more abuse, better service, better looking. And to some degree, just better shooters. Perhaps less hand shock etc. Not all bows shoot the same. Would've liked you to shot the bows individually and then put the vids in the main video. Yet much of what you said here is really good! Enjoy the southern hospitality and hot Georgia weather. I will try to see your bear in the Bear Den pizzeria... the end of June!
I dont agree with some of that stuff and I sure do love my custom bows. But for the money the quality of mass bows available today are amazing! You will love the bears den! Make sure you give yourself some extra time to look around the place and the pizza is second to none!
I also have a sage and I'm sorry I disagree with you it has a very flat shelf, the limb tips are not aggressive at all, the limb attachments have a lot of slop in them, I have many custom recurves that will flat out shoot and have far better performance at the same weight, the shelf is cut more friendly for shooting off the shelf, etc. The higher end bear recurves are far better, and a custom recurve is far superior. Can a person hunt and kill with it... absolutely.... but there are far better bows, with better limb design, better shelves, better grips, etc.
Lots of options and opinions out there and something for everyone. We have 4 sage bows in my house and I love everyone of them. Great bows and for the money they are absolutely top shelf. We're else can you get a bow like that and extra set of limbs for 200 bucks total that will last a lifetime and serve anyone well. Love the sage and what it's designed to be. Strong, functional, and affordable.
What you want to avoid are the super cheapo special bows made extra mass production from China. Those bows where just the bow is under $50 bran new, not a used cheaper bow, a got lucky bow at a garage sale/E--bay or is a kids bow at most 20 pounds is not worth getting. Even the better kids 60 inch long all fiberglass bows in the 25--30 pound bows or 30--35 pound bows like some Bear models, the PSE Snake as for several reasons avoid the SAS Snake, or SAS Robinhood are going to be at $50 or more when bran new as the best starter bows for people who have never done archery.
Nope! Live my custom bows and have always shot custom bows because I like picking my woods, having it built custom for me, etc. But we have always had a stable full of mass bows and love everyone of them. If I ever seen someone disrespect or belittle someone for shooting a sage or other mass produced bow I'd have a very very hard time not kicking that person in the nuts!
Fred Bear spent his life making archery accessible to the "everyman" by making bows affordable and reliable. Ordering a custom bow from someone like Nels Grumley took some serious cash. He did to archery what Ford did for mass transportation. Great post!

I remember looking at the bows Fred actually shot in his videos. They looked a lot more like the widow limbs, narrow and deep, than the bows they actually sold. There was always a part in his videos where they would toss a bow to the ground on a talus slope, or use the bow aggressively to ford a river. You could tell that what people wanted when they bought those bows was a bow that could take abuse. They didn't have chronographs, so performance wasn't really a thing. By the time the Trad thing got underway in the 80s, there were a lot of cheap Chronies around. People got excited over a few fps, and that was still a thing until about 10 years ago. Then gap became the norm, and people didn't care about speed much, since they were hitting.

I absolutely love my Black Hunter longbow! I have shot custom bows and own a vintage Bear kmag. The Black Hunter performs with the best of them. I will get me a custom longbow in the future, but I'll keep enjoying the "cheapy" for now.

Thank you Jason for this video. I am 68 1/2 and have never owned a custom bow, would I like to - yes but the family budget never really lent itself to high priced bow purchases. I grew up idolizing Fred Bear and consequently fell into shooting Bear bows and using a lot of Bear equipment , most of them I purchased 2nd hand at pretty low prices. Mostly shoot to hunt and don’t get into the showmanship aspect of the whole thing (can’t really afford to anyway). If (and I doubt) my Production bows don’t perform as well as other high priced custom bows then I just take that as another element of the challenge, which is what makes the whole sport so satisfying anyway.

This gentleman is 100% spot on! Thank you for your willingness to speak the truth. Not everybody can go and have a custom bow made. Heck even some off the rack bows like Bear etc are beyond what a lot of people can spend. These inexpensive bows do more good for archery than people give them credit for. Almost anybody can buy a bow for fun and for hunting and that is important. There is someone out there using these inexpensive bows to put meat on the table and feeding their family.

I have a Bear Kodiak 59 series with rose wood riser , and it shoots just as good today as it did when I bought it.
And it can be passed down for generations!

I honestly for a long time didn't think with my shorter draw length and a lighter pound traditional bow that it'd be sufficient enough for hunting, and I couldn't be any happier that I was so wrong lol

My second or third bow was a Sammick sage. Absolutely loved it. Sold it to my brother because I lended it to him to get into the sport. He shot it very well so I sold it to him. Very smooth pull and accurate as well. Do not be afraid to buy one. I've heard excellent things about the black hunter as well and will get my hands on one eventually. The only major problem with these bows is the bow buying addiction that can come afterwards. Especially if you're getting into this sport young like I did lol

I agree, i grew up with a Martin Jaguar Recurve and now I shoot a Black Hunter Longbow. My dream now is a Bear Kodiak. Personally I don't feel the need to ever have a custom. Although to each there own there are some nice ones out there

Literally just bought a Samick sage a week ago. It’s my first trad bow. I’ve only shot a handful of arrows (in my basement) and already enjoy it more than my compounds. Can get multiple of these for the price of one decent compound, so it’s a great option. I went down the trad bow path because I wanted to rely less on accessories/bow press/etc. Happy so far even if my form and everything is trash right now. Still fun…and now i understand why the elder statesmen, if you will, at the range I’m a member to only shoot traditional. I get it.

Yep excellent bows. We have 3 in my house and have best the tar out of them bowfishing and hunting and 3d shoots etc. They are solid durable, great shooting bows. I can not find one single flaw with a samick sage! Other than the snooty attitude of some that thing it's not worth because it's mass produced. I love the sage and would not hesitate to hunt with one if I shot recurves.

Boy was I surprised with the content of the video😅. I bought the sage on a budget but I’ve been so satisfied with it I haven’t even considered looking to upgrade. I have a few set of limbs at different poundage and it has threaded intakes for sights, quivers etc… thanks for not being a snobby purist and giving an honest review.

I shot 6 years of 1000 arrow weeks with my beat up 40 pound bear Montana. A custom bowyer could shave off some tip weight, fine tiller, other a different color beside black, help a local bowyer.
I have the sage premier from southland archery, and it's a good bow. We all should get the best we can afford and desire to have.

I have only ever shot mass produced bows. A little more then a year ago I landed on the Win and Win Black Wolf. It's an ilf and as close to a custom as I have ever come. The adjustability and available limbs as well as a failure grip makes it a wonderful fit for me. That said, I still want to shoot a custom or two and dream of a beautiful hand crafted work of art. It will happen but for now the Wolf is an amazing piece of equipment. We all have our own priorities, our own budgets, and preferences. I don't see any being better or worse. We are out doing what we enjoy. We need to just get along.

My uncle has a bunch of old mass produced bows, anywhere from, Bear, Herters, and Shakespeare , so many and out of all the bows he has had, the only bow that has broke or in this instance delaminated, was his Black Widow from the 80s.
I completely agree. However, I will throw caution about something you didn't mention. I have heard plenty of instances when, especially the Black Hunter, cheaper bows are mislabeled on the draw weight. So just pay mind to that. You might order a #50 bow, that is labeled #50, but might only draw #45, or what have you. That being said, I have shot Bear for years and have never had any issues. Just love em. I got a 45# @28" samick sage when I was 14 (first trad bow) and I still shoot that bow today. The only issue with it is people like me with longer than 29" draws cus boy does it stack fast like 4-5lbs at the last inch for my drawlength. Still love the bow but my freak draw length has made it a challenge. That Samick sage was probably the best purchase I ever made they really work awesome. Now I'm getting a #50@29" toelke SSLR in a few months because many production bows are just less consistent for people with longer drawlengths because of stacking. That issue is largely eliminated in Bears and some other production bows. I believe Sammick had a 64" production bow for longer drawlengths too so you're absolutely right. Production bows work awesome.
Great point! I think most mass bows are designed for 28 and under draw lengths to meet the majority of people. i have never felt a bow stack as i only draw 26 inches..lol
Amend brother ! Excellent sermon……I’ve shot many over the counter mass produce bows and have ordered custom made bows that were made to my specific draw and shooting style. In the end the difference is minimal, now my only caution is to be careful of non laminated hard wood Chinese made risers. I almost lost an eye when the beautifully dyed soft wood and bamboo riser literally delaminated and exploded during my draw.
Yep lots of great custom and mass produced bows out there. I jave seen both come apart as well. Fortunately today bows blowing up are very rare with the amazing glues available today
I have a Samick Sage in my collection, it is a fantastic bow, I use 30" carbon feathered, 500 spines. The arrows I use fly like darts. Its a absolute gem of a bow, I have extras plungers etc, BUT still shoot off the shelf as I enjoy it, and to achieve a side plate group at 22m is a breeze with this bow, it is not only a starter bow as some call it, you can take plenty species of African game with this bow, its a lovely bow.

If you look at an early custom house like Bighorn, in the Asbell, and Behn days, all the commercial bows didn't even have shelves on them, they were designed to be shot off an elevated rest. But Fred's personal bow wasn't. Asbell would sell you a shelf low to your hand, and other features designed to make the bow shoot better instinctive. It made a big difference. But now that we are back to shooting sights, there is a tremendous opportunity to get some of those old bows out of the cupboard and shoot them, gap or sights, and get them back in the game.

I adore my mass produced Sage variant, most of all because of how easy it is to change out limbs for different draw weights. They also take a whole lot of game. If I wanted to go competition I could add stabilizers etc too, and all for less than a single custom from most of the custom guys. I still intend to buy a couple of custom bows one day when the money is right, but I don't think I will ever sell this one

You’ve got to ask yourself a question. What does that “mass” bow do that the custom bow does better? The answer is NOTHING. They all do the same damn thing and they do it well. I own several custom bows, big money bows. I own like 8 “cheapy” bows. The one I find myself going to all the time is the Black Hunter. It handles great, shoots great. What more could you want. Slam banging it around the woods or on the boat. Great video. Great advice.

This is a great video just straight up real talk, and the truth that you don't hear too often! I have a Lwano Wolf bow that only cost me $106 including tax and it looks just like the bow in your hands, probably the exact same thing but copied from China (Just like there are several different brands of the Black Hunter bow.) with same riser, limbs, etc! (The SWA Spyder takedown recurve bow also looks a lot like it.) I would put my Lwano Wolf bow against any bow out there - I'm just not a great archer so any problems with accuracy is a user problem, not a bow problem.
I also have made 3 of my own Molegabet bows (a 50lb, 40lb, & 35lb) out of Red Oak boards and I enjoy shooting them as much, some times more, than any of the 4 bought bows I have! One day I may have a real bowyer make me a bow, but don't really have the extra money to do that, and I can make my own for under $25 and they turned out fine. (I will admit that it took me a few attempts to build my own bows, but finally after viewing a lot of video's on how to make them, reading books, and trial and error I got pretty good at it.) Some of us can not afford to buy a custom bow. I like the mass produced bows I myself started with a self now as a kid my first recurve bow was an Internature bow which was made by samick way before the sage was ever a thought killed my first mule deer with that the most expensive bow i own is a bear super grizzly.

Great video, for me this year I ended up in a position where I shot one way for a while and started learning a different drawing technique and now Im shooting my Samick Sage I bought 10 years ago because I reshaped the grip into a low wrist grip and my 900 dollar longbow is not in that shape and its too small to reshape so now Im shooting a when I bought it 120 dollar bow haha...
Eventually I ll order a nice bow just because I like certain materials in my bows (micarta denser woods) but for now the Samick Sage is shooting harder and much more accurate and that is what got my turkey and hope to get every thing else in the fall with it.

Well said brother, I’ve shot custom to 3 different black widows, Bear, Martin and had the bottom fall out from under me sold most my stuff. I cried for selling my favorite longbow Moad thunder stick. II’m now shooting a 64” $200 dollar Korean made D bow. It shoots fast and straight. But I want a custom ASL with what I want. My name favorite bible text on it and it’s going with me when I die. I saved my money and ordered it.

A good point one does not have to “upgrade” from one of those under $200 three piece bows to kill consistently for many years.
I had a 2006 PSE Fire Flite compound that I got cheap while working at Cabela’s. I only recently updated to a PRIME Black 3 (2020 bow) late last summer after 14 years. Mostly because I wanted the parallel limbs to put a bow stand on since I hunt a lot from the ground.
As I have mentioned a few times I plan on going with a 3 piece takedown like the Sages or Black Hunter or similar bows or I may look on the used market for Bear 🐻 Bow 🏹. I checked Lancaster Archery 🏹 Supply and their recurves are $399-$730. Not too bad and as long as one takes care of those bows like anything else they can last a lifetime and be passed down even.
Just like with rifles, one could use and shoot accurately with something in the Savage Axis, Ruger American, Winchester XPR, Remington 700 ADL price class and use it forever to take multiple game to fill the freezer and never need a custom rifle or a high end factory offering.

Sammick Sages are great little bows for the money, it's what I recommend to new members at our field archery club if they are looking to get something when they are starting out, well unless they want to go full Olympic recurve or compound of course.
At the weekend I was explaining point on distance to someone who was shooting their Sage and we went to the 80 yard target to find theirs. It was 80 yards dead on, the power in that wee bow honestly baffled me as that is further back than others at my club that shoot Border Bows Covert Hunters with HEX 9 limbs at higher poundages. Those bows cost in the thousands. They may not be as pretty, or as flashy, but they do the job just fine, plus they are great for kids, as you pointed out you can get higher poundage limbs so as they get older the bow can grow with them.
I have never had the chance to use a Bear bow, but I have no doubt they are great bows to shoot as well.

There's actually a classic and simplistic vibe with mass produced bows especially well made, time tested models. I'm drawn to them even with a few custom bows that I own and constantly find myself browsing catalogs of bear, damon howatt and hoyt.

I love my Samick. I have a couple nice bows that are locally made by hand at Shatterproof Archery here in Colorado. Their bows are more reflex/deflex longbows and are fantastic. BUT! I find myself turning back to my Samick Sage and SAS Maverick. The Gluark Black Hunter bow is pretty decent too. But find what works for you.

I do want a custom bow just to have. I shoot a bear bow mostly now, and I am pretty good with that grizzly. I have some older Ben Pearsons, and a few older bear bows as well. I got my daughters and my girlfriend Samick bows. They are pretty good shooting bows. My draw length is 32 inches and, the bear bows can take my draw length, and I haven’t found anything better yet. The Sage is made in Korea not China. I agree that the Sage and other rebranded Sages are great bows. Replacing the Dacron string with Fast Flight will really wake that bow up. Many older Bear, Martin etc. bows can be picked up at garage sales and thrift stores for little money and make great bows. Good luck with your move!
Not made in korea. The Koreans can't afford to build a bow that cheaply and have the Chinese make their cheaper models like the sage.

Sage is China. At one time I believe Korea produced them but they’ve been in China for some time now. Still good stuff though.
I shot a sage and it was a good shooter. I don't own 1 personally i shoot a pse coyote 2 mainly but i may get a samick sage 1 of these days in the near future.

@@SamkoTradBow It's more than twice the cost of the one I asked about. I was looking at the 53" takedown bow. Runs about $60.
My pal who shoots the power bows, 80 and up, 3 piece recurves. He has blown up a half dozen bows. Even the custom bows can't take the heat. He used to be a Can dealer for Widow. He blew up several of those, Whippens. That guy in BC who was all the rage for a while. Etc... So you can't even get the heavy bows in a Sammick and you really need someone who specializes in heavy bows, if that is what you want.
(He shoots plenty heavy arrows). I actually think the problem is he leaves his bows strung, as recommenced. However, heavy bows don't seem to be able to take it.
I shoot a Amazon Black Hunter Longbow and like it so much, I bought one for my Daughter and another for my grandson.

compounds are better for bowfishing out of a small jon boat or canoe since you dont have to stand up or wrestle with it getting stuck under the seats

Absolutely, with one caveat - you can buy some accuracy at the higher levels of the sport but for 95% of us mass produced bows are good. I do like supporting bowyers if I can though. Good vid!

I had to choose between a stalker stickbow that was preowned and a bear td kodiak.
Bothe at a similar priece point.
Ended up with the bear , just because stuff ia replaceable.
If something breaks u pay up to 400 to get a pair of limbs.
If i would have to get new limbs for a stalker there would be hundreds of dollars in shipping / import alone.

Use a Compound like a Gen--X or Genesis--X without a sight to lessen the pain with a bow with the finger savers as well as the tab/glove since this is like one of the last models of compound that can be fired without a release tool and works fine without a sight. This is if the pain is not so bad you have to use a crossbow/get the special license.
@@caseysmith544 I had a Mathews creed dialed it down and used wrist strap but at my state of degeneration it’s easier to not blow a shot and now just use gun . Thanks for the advice though greatly appreciate your help
@@sheerwillsurvival2064 Sorry to hear that, I bet you still with doctors notes could get special license to use a Crossbow that is more traditional than a modern one.
Yep arthritis makes a trad bow tough. But hopefully you can still get out and enjoy some woods time!
@@SamkoTradBow A more traditional type of crossbow is what might help if he wanted to get closer to what he did, he could probably get the special permits to hunt with a crossbow. if he is too far gone in arthritis then a gun is fine I do gun hunting too for some animals as it is not legal to hunt with a bow like a few smaller game birds in season or others I am not ready to bow hunt traditional like Deer and would not want a compound as it would be nearly the same as hunting with a 20 gauge shotgun with best distance 40--50 yards and with aiming would be similar since I would probably go with the older small circle with dot type T sight that is still made today by Chinese companies.

Modern custom bows are mainly pimping out exercises of questionable taste. It used to be that custom bows were sold on performance, but there are too many makers all of a sudden, and mostly they are selling fancy wood, and designs. Who was the last bowyer who sold his gear on the basis it was better?

Yep its really easy to suddenly have too many bows. But my wife thinks the new ones are :just bows i already had that i sent out to be refinished...😆😆 Glad you enjoyed the video!

Probably can buy a good recurve off the shelf. But I have a PSE Heritage that can’t be tuned, it comes off the string with the tail kicked hard to my left, with large enough feathers it’ll fishtail back to straight. But this bow can’t be tuned to shoot true!
That sounds like bad arrow spine to me. Never met a bow that could get an arrow to fly. Before you spend money on another bow try a different arrow spine

I love my custom bows but I also have a sage and a black hunter all are awsome bows sure I prefer my custom hybrid longbow but I swear those sages and black hunters are bulletproof no matter how I've abused them they just take it

I have a Martin X-200 that's 45 yrs old been through hell too, shoots as hard and fast as the day it was made.but due to a shoulder injury I need a lighter bow but there's no way I can afford another howatt even a used one so that leaves me with the sub $200 range of imports and if not for them idd be $hit out of luck.i think the sanlida royal x-8 one piece recurve will be this PO BOY's next bow.

So I collect knives. I will compare this to the knife realm. Some people look down on the cheaper knives. I have seen videos implying that if you aren't carrying a $200, $500, or even $1000 dollar knife it's not worth it. My most expensive knife was $250, but it's not even one of the knives I carry anymore. I carry a $25, $50, and $80 knives (yes I carry three) when I'm not working, and a $40 knife when I am. Why? Because they do the job. Yes some cheap knives are junk, but most will do what you need.
I imagine bows to be very similar. You'll get different materials, maybe something hand made, by paying more. There's guys that look down on anything less because it makes them feel superior. A super cheap one could be dangerous, but even relatively cheap ones will do exactly what you need it to.
Oh and another similarity I see is the variety. Yes in knives there's only so many materials and blade shapes, and in bows there's only so many materials and styles, but both can be found in very unique combinations. Oh and there's the fact they're both fun and practical.
Well crap this could get expensive if I keep finding similarities and start collecting bows too. 😂😂 I do have my grandpa's old compound and long bow, as well as a cross bow. I definitely would like a couple of others, but... Yeah it's looking like I might end up collecting these as well. Lol

One of my favorite things is to go up against a custom bow shooter during a tournament with my black hunter recurve and totally smoke them at 40 yards... dead center and stacking one arrow on top of the other. As I totally reiterate in anyone that I'm teaching to shoot. It's not the bow... It's the Archer

I am lefty! I'm gonna use that Martin mamba to kill a deer and a hog in 2023 as that will be my 30th year traditional and that Martin is the only bow I've owned that I never killed a big game animal with and I've owned it for 30 years!
Bear makes some of the best but watch out for Bear bows made from 2010 to 2015/2016 as the risers on some models tended to fall apart due to poor quality selection of the type of wood used. Bearpaw also makes very similar bows since the late 1960's after they stopped carrying the Ben Person bows, often used in Europe for 3D shooting.
Never heard that about the bear bows. Know alot of people that shoot and love them. Such great bows. Always have been and always will be!

Yes your right ,if you do your homework and good setup ,arrow weight and practice .you can take any game or any target..
Custom bows are nice too but you need to know exactly what you want before jumping in custom bow land.
A lot of man hours go into a custom bow and the sky the limit.

That is the big deal with archery, there is no way to measure accuracy bow to bow. It is fundamentally all about accuracy, but we have no standardized measurement, as we do with Ransom rests, or benchrests. The assumption is that every bow out there is every bit as accurate, with properly spined arrows. That seems very unlikely to me, but it is where we are.
It amazes me how caught up in brand names and cost that people get. Especially with traditional bows which are entirely dependant on your ability to shoot and has nothing to do with the quality of the bow. You can spend thousands of dollars on a fantastic recurve but it's worthless if you don't know how to shoot it.

Yes/No. Custom bows may have overall better and more solid quality in all areas like riser and limbs. Better gluing, degree of tolerances etc. Custom bows can take more abuse, better service, better looking. And to some degree, just better shooters. Perhaps less hand shock etc. Not all bows shoot the same. Would've liked you to shot the bows individually and then put the vids in the main video. Yet much of what you said here is really good! Enjoy the southern hospitality and hot Georgia weather. I will try to see your bear in the Bear Den pizzeria... the end of June!
I dont agree with some of that stuff and I sure do love my custom bows. But for the money the quality of mass bows available today are amazing!
You will love the bears den! Make sure you give yourself some extra time to look around the place and the pizza is second to none!
I also have a sage and I'm sorry I disagree with you it has a very flat shelf, the limb tips are not aggressive at all, the limb attachments have a lot of slop in them, I have many custom recurves that will flat out shoot and have far better performance at the same weight, the shelf is cut more friendly for shooting off the shelf, etc. The higher end bear recurves are far better, and a custom recurve is far superior. Can a person hunt and kill with it... absolutely.... but there are far better bows, with better limb design, better shelves, better grips, etc.
Lots of options and opinions out there and something for everyone. We have 4 sage bows in my house and I love everyone of them. Great bows and for the money they are absolutely top shelf. We're else can you get a bow like that and extra set of limbs for 200 bucks total that will last a lifetime and serve anyone well. Love the sage and what it's designed to be. Strong, functional, and affordable.
What you want to avoid are the super cheapo special bows made extra mass production from China. Those bows where just the bow is under $50 bran new, not a used cheaper bow, a got lucky bow at a garage sale/E--bay or is a kids bow at most 20 pounds is not worth getting. Even the better kids 60 inch long all fiberglass bows in the 25--30 pound bows or 30--35 pound bows like some Bear models, the PSE Snake as for several reasons avoid the SAS Snake, or SAS Robinhood are going to be at $50 or more when bran new as the best starter bows for people who have never done archery.

Nope! Live my custom bows and have always shot custom bows because I like picking my woods, having it built custom for me, etc. But we have always had a stable full of mass bows and love everyone of them. If I ever seen someone disrespect or belittle someone for shooting a sage or other mass produced bow I'd have a very very hard time not kicking that person in the nuts!
