300 for a new grill..... try 600, nice job tho

Your right $600 is more like it, but I'd also say he was correct cause it looked like the $300 dollar model. I've seen ones like that before at Lowes for about that.

I got a ceramic grill for $600 at Academy and absolutely love it. $300 is about right for a charcoal one like that.

I refinished the exact same grill. Except I used a screw driver and a pair of players and removed each detachable part. I also cleaned the entire interior with oven cleaner. Time consuming, but I enjoyed it. Grill looked amazing.

"The lifetime of a backyard grill is maybe two, three years."
I purchased my current grill in 2011. I just bought a replacement for it because I liked the features. My current grill is going to my son, for his new place. It's amazing what something as simple as a cover can do to keep from having to buy a new grill every few years.

You are a genius. I could have never painted my pit without your help. I enjoyed your explanations of how a complicated pit works. The painting procedure was equally informative. Again very complicated procedures made easy by somebody with years of experience. Removing the rust and cleaning, taping off the parts you don't want to paint, shaking the paint can before painting. Who would ever think of that? At first I thought you might be somebody that just needs attention and wants to be adored, (you have over 300,000 views) but you come across as sincere and really wanting to help a moron like me.

We did the same thing to our grill. Got 12 years out of a $250 grill and it looked new the whole time. It’s about maintenance. Funny thing is the food doesn’t really taste any different than on a $600 grill. 🙄

TRUE !!! My grill is 20 years old. I live in Quebec and it stay outside all winter... I never paint it (I will do it in the next few days) It's old, it's not "nice"... but the taste of the food is great !!! Why change it ;)

My brother has the same grill and it works great, but here's a little tip. The only downside this grill has is the charcoal doesn't last because the grate has openings that are too big. Get a piece of expanded steel or anything with smaller openings and lay it on top of the original grate. Makes a world of difference and you'll use less charcoal.

I'm a charcoal snob. Hate gas grills. In fact, when my neighbors put them at the curb, I like to roll them home, strip out all the gas burner parts, and turn them into charcoal grills. I've probably painted a couple dozen grills and sold them over the years. That hi-heat engine paint is the bomb.
(It drove me crazy to see you paint over that SS handle! 2 minutes of masking off, brother)

Rust-oleum 2000 degree high heat paint is not the best choice of paint to use on your BBQ. It is a ceramic engine paint that needs to be properly cured, the curing process involves 3 steps of heating and cooling the part, once to 250 degrees, then cooled for 30 min, then heated to 400 degrees for 30 min and then cooled for 30 minutes, then finally heated to 650 degrees and cooled for 30 minutes.
It wont have any high temperature resistance unless its cured and will flake off .
Another issue is that their high temp ceramic paint is true flat paint which needs to be finished with a Simi gloss or mat clear coat.
A much better choice is Rust-oleums proprietary high heat BBQ paint, this is not the same as the high heat ceramic engine paint that you used. The high heat BBQ paint is a patented proprietary formula, Unlike the engine paint the BBQ paint has a nice rich mat finish that resists heat up to 1200 degrees and most importantly doesn't require a complicated curing process to activate its high heat properties.

How did the paint hold up over time? Did you get any cracking from expansion/contraction of the metal? I'm going to be getting my reverse offset smoker back from sandblasting this week. Trying to decide if I should paint the outside or coat it with linseed oil. I'm going to paint the legs/frame, counterweight, handles, etc., but just don't want to have to strip the main chamber in the future if the paint cracks and peels...

I have a Napoleon that I've had since 2000. Cost at the time was around $700. Never been painted and cleaned very infrequently. We've used it a lot and its been back and forth across the country with us. Can't say enough about how great Napoleon's are. The only thing that gave up the ghost was the igniter. I just now bought some high heat paint to do some touch ups. Incredibly durable. Having a grill only last 1-2 years is criminal.

After wasting a ton of money on "grill paint", I finally started using the 2000 degree engine paint. I don't know about the 2000 degrees, but I've never had anything hot enough to peel this stuff off.
One last suggestion, you might want to consider removing the ash from the bottom of your grill the next day or whenever it cools down. Ash with moisture creates a acid type muck. Enjoyed your video.

Looks great! I personally would have tapped off all the crime parts. Don’t need to just use tape. Can get a cheap plastic bag to wrap around large areas and tie off of the ends for a clean cut with the tape. Every time I paint, my only regret is paint getting on things I wish it never did, which easiest way to do this is to cover and prep work.

I did however just clean it and take it apart so i can restore it and get another 8 years out of it.

I live in a college town and it's really a shame that when school is out those kids throw out so much stuff that their parents paid money 💰 for. My problem seems to be paint peeling from the inside. Hey Josh got a question for you. I bought the Rustoleum 2000 degree automotive clear gloss, and put it over my Rustoleum high heat copper paint on my Ugly Drum Smoker. I noticed that after a few burns that when I touch it the gloss and the paint is rubbing off, and it wasn't before I put the clear coat on it. Is there any way to fix this problem? and do you think it is harmful to the meat I'm cooking inside of my Smoker? (I only sprayed the outside, NOT the inside) Thanks

I repainted mine last year. I'm going to have to rivet some sheet metal in the bottom of it though. My old neighbor gave it to me about six years ago. It shows it's age but still works great. I really don't want to buy a new one.

Every time I grill, I clean the grate and then soak a paper towel in olive oil and soak them. Works great, non stick.

So this grill has some sort of non-stick coating on the grates....they clean up great!

I agree. I just suggested it cause it looks like some rust is starting to develop, that's all and the top grate looks like mine and doesn't have the ceramic coating on them. It really does work. Thanks and thumbs up !

Is it safe to use on the inside surface of a grill? Got rust inside too but don't want chemicals baking into my food!

I would not use it inside...too much oil and grease paint probably won't stick or will flake off on your food

Huh. My propane grill is 15 years old. Was a wedding gift. Lasted longer than two marriages and saw my step daughter get married. But been through at least 5 charcoal grills during that same time. Use both all the time year round.

Was when new. Top of the line char broil at the time, a gift from her boss. Just take care of it cleaning it and covering up when not using. Definitely showing it's age but it is an Arizona grill. Very little rust.
