      I can’t be certain, but the idea of a cursed television finding its way to multiple people and trapping/killing them with a tv show is the plot of the indie horror movie The Video Dead and I believe it may have been an inspiration for this episode

  • @ajromero3692
    @ajromero3692 3 ปีที่แล้ว +95

    While this episode wasn't very comedic, it contains a moment that made me laugh one of the hardest I ever have during American Dad, and that's when Francine tells Stan, "Don't wake the bab-" and Stan immediately slams the door and Roger begins crying. It was just so abrupt with expert timing.
    Also, I really got to give it to the writers deciding to do a more mystery/horror oriented episode. While American Dad is sort of my "junk food/feel good" show that I put on when I want to laugh, I still loved this episode. That could be because I'm a big horror fan, but even if I wasn't, the story is just really unique and gripping. It feels like something I would've read on r/nosleep or an urban legend a co-worker would've told me. Definitely one of their best.

      Yeah, I honestly think that it's actually a rare example of a show that gets better as it goes on instead of worse. American Dad is quietly brilliant- kinda gets written off as family guy 2.0, but it's not that at all, and easily the best show Seth McFarlane has ever been part of.

    • @SamanthaJonesSATC

    Something that I love about this episode is how the A plot is played completely straight. There aren’t gags to downplay the danger Stan and Tuttle are in, the villain never stops to make any wisecracking jokes (which makes him more intimidating), the episode isn’t afraid to have extended scenes where there isn’t any talking, just music. It’s perfect.
    And yea, the B plot could’ve been really lame, but it’s used so sparingly that you hardly notice it.

    • @Stathio
      @Stathio 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I actually love that the B-plot barely being there is kind of the entire joke of it, while that joke doubles as letting the episode focus on Stan's storyline- it just plain works all round.

  • @timwhite5562
    @timwhite5562 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    It never occurred to me that the opening scene was strictly from TBS. I would have never thought from the first season that 18 years later it would not only have become FAR better than Family guy ever was, but is still funny right up to this day. Even it's Always Sunny hasn't been able keep that consistency.
    The fact that the wife/mother character is just as funny as anyone else is a singular factor in AD. I mean: Marge Simpson? Lois Griffin? Any episode descriptions that focused on them were always an accurate way to anticipate a boring episode. Some of the funniest lines of the series have been delivered by Francine.
    Akiko: "my mother said video games are bad for you!"
    Francine: "yeah well, so is smoking an eight ball of crack in a half hour, but that's how long it takes." 😂

    • @GeminiFate
      @GeminiFate ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, I can't think of any other show where the wife actually has funny moments without being just the setup for a joke. I love how Francine is just quirky and often times does her own thing.

    The best thing about TBS American Dad is it embraces its sci fi weirdness and it feels like watching a solid Futurama episode than a stagnating Simpsons or Family Guy. Episodes like this, Hot Water, The 200 etc really capture the essence of American Dad but put it into real absurdist situations like how the earlier seasons handled war reinactments, Roger's pettiness and persistence etc. I'm glad one of my favourite shows can still drop bangers like this

      Dunno what show you're watching- American Dad is one of the only animated sitcoms where the characters actually develop over episodes, and the lessons actually stick somewhat. That's one of the best things about it, and makes it way more interesting- early episodes were just like Family Guy in a casual 'look at how mean spirited these characters are to one another!' kind of unfunny way. At this point in the show, they'll still act like maniacs to each other every now and again, but now it's actually funny instead of just being a depressing default.

    This episode randomly came on ITV the other night in the UK, and they tend to play the TBS era of episodes, and I've been really pleasantly surprised with the quality of the episodes I've seen from this era, this show is now far far better than Family Guy and The Simpsons at this point. This episode was an absolute joy to watch, I'm still surprised with how much I enjoyed it, great video man, really surprising to see you have less than 400 subs, you deserve way more my dude.

      American Dad dropped the political stuff after the first two seasons and AD handles surrealism a lot better than Family Guy. It's funny on American Dad but when FG goes for bizarre storylines, it isn't.

    Isn’t it obvious that this is like twilight zone episode. Alastair Corvus was probably a person who try to create the Nighthawk highway for a night TV show but didn’t get a chance. So he probably given Up his soul to the dark forces of the underworld that allowed him to have his own show.
    Any kidnap some people when they used to have those trapped of televisions of their own free will but if they go astray he deals with the problem by turning into a demon and eating anyone.

    It's just a theory but There was an old comedy show called The Ernie Kovacs Show (where the antagonist may have gotten his last name) which ran from 1952 to 1962. The Wikipedia Article states it ran under several broadcasting networks including NBC, CBS, DuMont and ABC (I'm not sure if this is why we see the TV be passed on over and over on garbage night to different neighbors ). Alistair Covax's name is spelled differently but he also may have gotten his name from real Occultist, Aleister Crowley.

    You do know american fung was a play on how the shows hit its 10th season and the episode is one of the most re-used situations in sitcom history "the husband forgot the anniversary" and almost all the jokes are a play on how the show has reached a tipping point that all tv shows reach which is they all inevitably repeat themselves then are scrapped then a new show takes its place and then the cycle begins a new.

Honestly, American dad found us putting in season two, slipped up briefly in the season after TBS bought it, but has regained pretty good footing ever cents. Macfarlane cartoons often take wholesale the plot of movies or tv shows and parody them so usually I just assume actually interesting high concept plots like Rabbit Ears was lampooning an episode of the Twilight Zone or something
    But no This was actually an original plot and this episode actually managed to be slightly creepy and original despite the clear TZ inspiration
    idk why I'm pointing this out between this episode and the alien designs from the Jeff in Space arc I kinda wish the creators could work on something with more weight and creativity being encouraged in the writing room
