    Great hack with the 1L sling through airport security - feels like a simple but effective move.
    This may not be the craziest travel story, but one of my favorite moments in Japan was when an older gentleman offered to take my picture when he saw me going for a selfie at the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. Not only did he offer that kind gesture but then went on to thank me for visiting Japan. I thanked him for welcoming me. It set the tone for the rest of the trip and I met nothing but wonderful people along the way.

    As someone that uses a bicycle almost everyday for work a sling /messenger bag is one of the worst kind of bags for cycling. If it suddenly swings to your side it can make you lose balance in the middle of a busy street, it can get caught in a car's mirror and puts uneven pressure on your back. But after all that you insist that you have super human skills and that won't happen to you at least choose one that come with an extra safety strap to keep it from sliding to your side

      I have a messenger bag with some basic clips that are used to quickly fasten it to a rear rack or the front basket mount on something like a Boris bike.

    I'd love to see more videos on backpacks in that 15-18L range. As a smaller person that's my sweet spot for daily carry and travel personal item. I've looked A LOT and found surprisingly few options that fit my needs, whch are decent organization, TWO external water bottle pockets, and some kind of quick access pocket (preferably an external mesh pocket). The best I've found so far is the Matador Beast 18 for its size and comfort, BIG water bottle pockets, and trail/city versatility. I'd love to see what other options you recommend.

      @@franciscofuentes8916 I hear ya. I am lucky here in Slovakia that they are available, but it comes to me as a surprise since its also really hard to get to American gear here.
      What helped me was to check out the online stores that sell Photography accessories (like for professional photographers) and musical instruments stores. These two types of people here in EU have to lug around their stuff somehow, and it has been the only way so far I could get my hands on packing cubes and more sophisticated backpacks. Peakdesign also has a wordpress website here, so they might be more Eurofocused.

    A point to be considered with the 1 litre bum bag/fanny pack - it might be convenient but DON'T put all your eggs in the one basket.
    One of my nephews was in Bangkok earlier this year and got "squeezed" in a crowded market place. Whether the thieves unclipped the buckle or, as he was told by locals, cut the belt with scissors suddenly it was gone.
    He lost the LOT: passport, phone, money, cards - nearly ruined the whole trip.

    I got a Samsonite Guardit 2.0 backpack (about 30L) years ago and it's been great from daily use to weekender or personal item. I WFH now so I typically use a sling (Just got an Aer Day Sling 3 Max) but back when I commuted it was the best bag I could have ever wished for. I like the three-compartment design with the large, padded laptop pouch at the back that fitted my old 17" laptop, and now when I travel home it fits both my work MBP 13 and my personal MBP 14, with a built-in divider to keep them separate. And there are plenty of smaller sub-pouches inside the other compartments to arrange my gear and, when needed, enough space for a rolled up raincoat or hoodie. Great do-it-all backpack, shame they don't make it anymore but you can still find it at some online retailers.

    I’ve found the sweet spot for me personally, for my every day bag is 10L. It leaves a bit of extra room for paperwork or my 11” iPad Pro and/or Switch, as long as I have external bottle pockets. Of course this assumes I’m wearing or carrying a jacket or sweater…if I would need to stuff it in my bag I’d have to carry a bigger one.

    Sometimes going with a smaller bag can force you to pack smarter and really put more thought behind the items you bring. I have read blogs where people travel indefinitely using just a 9L bag, the rationale behind every piece of gear they pack is fascinating

If I could go back in time I'd tell my dad I was bringing my school backpack with enough clothes for a week, my toothbrush and enough toothpaste and soap to get started wherever we're going. Oh and my bear...can't leave home without bear 🤦‍♀️🐻...my sibling took a bunny and a tamagotchi 😂. Obviously there's stuff you HAVE to take for little kids, but my family did laundry when were overseas anyway, so we definitely could have taken much less stuff.

    It's really hard for us short torso folk who need a larger backpack for three to four-day journeys and can't go beyond 18.5" - 19" max in length. Ideas? My Synik 22, CPL 24 and Brown Buffalo Conceal 19 are too tight. I bet there's a lot of us out there. Hope you can help us out.

      Hey there! Packs designed for outdoor uses like hiking often have adjustable back panels. You might want to try brands that come from that background like Osprey and Gregory.

      Yes, carryon max sizes and weights are published and enforced by airlines , but for other modes of travel measure your dimensions then the DIMENSIONS of potential packs by inches or cm and relate this to your body size when shopping for a pack. Then weigh it when packed before practicing carrying it packed and adjust the contents till it feels not too heavy. Then only pack in future with the same weight or less.

    You make a great comment about how manufacturers measure capacity. Have you thought of including a section in your product reviews in which you compare the manufacturer’s stated capacity with what you believe is the actual capacity (of course, PH would need to develop their own “objective” test). I think I’d trust PH’s measurements more…

    • @graymalk9696
      @graymalk9696 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Actually, every bag between 28-35l can be good. Depends on how much you pack. First check every airplane company you use about there regulations about size and weight restrictions. And check if your ticket also allows this, some ticketbargains don't allow a normal backpack size handluggage. Unless you pay more. You are warned. When you found the dimensions you can use, you can search for a backpack. There are many brands, best check in a real shop for the fit. If that's not possible, go for a common brand, I like Osprey, the commuter versions. And although I have an 34l Nebula, I most often use a 28l Flare. These models might no longer exist, but the size gives you an indication. It holds everything for 3 weeks.
      Edit, i checked the website but these models have changed a lot over the years, the Flare no longer has the smal hip belt and the meshpocket can no longer hold that much.

    I know you mention 20L as personal item backpack, but would 30L be too large? I do videography, & on bigger shoots, I would like to carry on my Pelican 1510 for camera gear & a great backpack that can carry some clothes. I’ve been eyeing the PD Everyday 30L, but I don’t want it to be too big as a personal item

    • @PackHacker
      @PackHacker 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dominic! It will depend on the airline's sizing restrictions. Some airlines allow for larger personal items while others are very restrictive. I would check the websites of the airlines you use most to see what the maximum dimensions allowed are.

    I appreciated the use of metric measurements until I realised they were just measuring in ping pong balls and slapping an arbitrary number on their product.
    America really will measure in anything before it measures in metric.
