    You actually need to roll higher than the DV to make a succesful skill check. That's why the rules say that you must "beat" the DV. Initially I wasn't sure either, but the chapter "Using Your Luck" on page 130 clarify this issue. Quote: "If your Check is over that amount (i.e. the DV), you did it!"

    5:03 comparing the Red core book with the 2020 core book I'm noticing less emphasis on Empathy and related skills. Most mentions of it relate to low humanity leading to reduced empathy and therefore teetering at the brink of cyberpsychosis. But having high empathy isn't mentioned aside from these two EMP skills: conversation and human perception. In 2020 on the other hand, the EMP skills were (page 48) Human Perception, Interview, Leadership, Seduction, Social, Persuasion/Fast Talk, and Perform. Actually, looking at the Red skill list again, most of those are still there but they got switched to either COOL or TECH skills. I wonder how the EMP stat will do as they release more books 🤔 Seems underpowered for everything but the cyberpsycho mechanics compared to the other stats and skills. Comparing it to a CRPG for an example, I like the different personality and mental traits in Disco Elysium: even the skillcheck failures can lead to unexpected situations and character development. Not that I expect to wrestle with different aspects of my psyche in the neon alleyways of the Dark Future, or have long branching dialogues with hostile boostergangers who are hungry for some new chrome I happen to have equipped for the moment, but EMP skills could be worked into many non-combat scenarios, especially given the amount of double-dealing and backstabbing that is business-as-usual in the time of the Red. INT and COOL seem overpowered in comparison, but I guess it's up to the GM to balance things one way or another. By the way, there's a HumbleBundle right now for many of the Cyberpunk 2020 PDFs. You can get almost the full set for 15 bucks or more, with the money allocated to R Talsorian and/or a charity. It's a steal for the amount of content, I'm very happy they decided to do that sale.

      My understanding is that they wanted to reduce the number of Skills affected by Humanity loss.

    Lipreading feels like an overly specialized skill, and Basic Tech is one of the broadest skills again. Do they specify the difference between a High Education and Science in CPRed?

    • @ekorren
      @ekorren  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, Science covers most of academia apart from the fact that you need to specify the topics.

      Players can use education or science as a complimentary roll if the player is up to a tough task that may need a boost. Let’s say a medtech needs to stabilize a team mate or do a surgery. You can do a education or science (biology or other specific that makes sense in the scenario) and if successful (based on GM DV) they can add a +1 or +2 to the roll (GM discretion). Another example. A Netrunner wants to back door a heroic level password. Their interface isn’t high a enough to mathematically beat the DV. The Netrunner can use the program worm along with a complimentary roll of cryptology. The Netrunner can also use luck if they really want to beat this high level difficulty.

    its JU-DO not IU-DO

      I'm not a native speaker so I make mistakes sometimes. Then again, since it's a Japanese word, one could argue that iu-do is more authentic. ;)

    The jump cuts.. dude. Just plan out the episode and be natural. Jump cuts are jarring and should be used sparingly and use tricks like jumping to a new angle or art or anything to hide it.

    • @ekorren
      @ekorren  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The reason there are so many cuts is because English isn't my native tongue and I don't live in a country where English is often spoken. I've only had a single natural conversation in English in all of 2020. If I make a video where I speak naturally, there would be too many pauses and I would struggle with coherence. Since I script videos like this, the fact that I do them in another language limits how much I can memorize at the time. If I want to vastly reduce the number of cuts, I would have to do vastly more retakes, which would vastly increase the time it takes to record a video. I think the cuts are annoying too, but it's a gradual process to improve.
