Hey, I'm Max, the guy that created the V's apartment in the motel. The rest of the apartments were created by my extremely dedicated and skilled colleagues at Treehouse Ninjas, a studio in Budapest that assisted CDPR in creating nearly a hundred locations in Night City. We had pretty much total freedom on what to do with the spaces they assigned us for the apartments, so we feel al to of ownership to them :)
Working on this title was a blast, and we really appreciate your in-depth review. Like everyone else at CDPR, we put our hearts and blood in this project, so it's really nice to hear some good words about what we did ❤
    Cheers!

except when it comes to clothing at least for female v. none of the clothes i'd wear for real are in the game but they are on npcs here and there. I had to make my own models to get something that resembles actually feminine and fashion and not some unisex nonsense. I do agree the architecture is amazing, even the few higher end vehicles they added, especially their interiors are nice and make sense with the rl counterparts but also were concept cars are going.

      as compared to witcher 3

The Glen apartment is the exact style of place I've always wished I had. The open space, renovated industrial feel is what I've wanted ever since I was young.

    • @beergnomedc
      @beergnomedc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

I've lived in enough tiny "closets" that having that open space is a necessity. The place I've got now is more or less a standard apartment except it has an almost fully open floor plan and 12 foot ceilings. Not quite the same as that inner city industrial feel, but still better than living in a tiny box lol.

I agree, though one thing to note is I'm pretty sure the prices for all these apartments are for RENT, which means even for this cheapest apartment, you'd have to spend $5,000 per month just to live in a converted motel property in Night City.
Let's say for example the full-time minimum wage in Night City is well under $10,000 per month. I think as an average citizen, there's no way I'd want or need to rent anything more expensive. Maybe if I'm REALLY well off, I'd go for the Japantown apartment but nothing more.

I agree! The apartment I live in is roughly the same size as the Northside apartment room, maybe even a bit smaller. It even has the bed right next to the door same as in game.
So in a weird way, it feels the most "like home" to me and I think it feels pretty cozy. It's compact and has easiest access since you don't have to take the lift. The only thing that could be considered "bad" here is the lack of natural light and ventilation.

The guy signing off on it wasn't going to live there, the guy who owns the space isn't going to live there, etc. So no one had any investment past the paperwork. the reason, imo, is that it could be a representation of even more opulence; in a world which wood is rare and expensive, and space needs to be used efficiently, here we'll just use wood as flooring for a big empty space with no purpose instead, major "I have gold posts and trims on my ceiling" energy

I love the Japantown apartment too because it reminded me of my grandparents' HDB flats in Singapore that I used to visit in my childhood. I could imagine walking into the elevator smelling the scent of old urine and then walking into the apartment with the incense in the air. Even the bathroom is next to the kitchen 🤣.
The Corpo Plaza apartment took me by surprise as it felt like it was a hotel room than a home. Barely any personal touches and certainly fit the life of an Arasaka agent. Barely at home and only use it for sleeping. I usually keep it for roleplaying as CorpoV before the prologue. The area also reminded me of the base of Petronas towers and Kuala Lumpur City Centre.

This is such a beautiful look at all the living options in Night City. This really feels like a review and understanding of what life is/can be in the world of Cyberpunk, and feels like a review of the reality you find yourself in when experiencing the game. The seamless integration of the discussion regarding choices of elements and how it exhibits environmental storytelling feels like there is real respect given to these fictional set pieces, as well as being a subtle explanation of what design is as a whole. Easily one of the best videos done on Cyberpunk 2077 for sure!

The red colour goes so well with the brutalist style . This same style is seen in Control , it is done really well there too . The only thing that was done really well in Cyberpunk were the environments (and the story) , that's the only thing that wasn't as rushed to an extent as the gameplay mechanics and optimisation on launch . Really good video man , it's given me a better insight to the world of Cyberpunk .

17:40 Regarding your interpretation on why V would purchase the corpo plaza apartment - I interpreted it not as V subconsciously being persuaded or controlled by Silverhand, but rather as V looking to placate Silverhand by having his “Magnum Opus” constantly in view. The screens above the corpo plaza bed are not advertisement screens, but rather entertainment screens like you can find in a lot of high-end apartments and nightclubs around Night City. They are in essence the Cyberpunk equivalent of a modern TV in your bedroom.
I also feel like the addition of the large empty space in the apartment is intended to serve as a luxury. Space itself is a commodity in this world, especially in the more central parts of the city. So the ability to host a large number of guests, even if they have to stand, is a privilege reserved to the upper echelon.
Empty space just like it is in fact one of the key reasons for my purchase of my own condo, although it is admittedly in a low-cost town.

My favorite apartment has to be The Glen apartment. I have it purchased on my streetkid character as it is the most fitting apartment for them. They are a Heywood native after all, and I really enjoy the thought of V returning from Atlanta, making a name for themselves in NC, moving to Watson in the megabuilding, then finally once they have the eddies, move back home to Heywood. A fitting loop for the lifepath. I have the other apartments on my other characters for headcannon reasons. Like my Nomad has the motel because he's a minimalist, also needs somewhere thats on the downlow to operate out of. I think of him when he's not with the Aldecaldos, as a Punisher-like operator. It fits his build too. As for my Corpo, its a little deeper story connected. But to sum it up, the corpo lifestyle makes her feel more comfortable, but not only that, its also a statement piece. She got terminated by Arasaka, but that won't stop her from success. Kinda like being a weed that no matter how many times you pull it out, it just keeps growing back. Fits her persistence.

Fantastic video, really puts into words the details I saw but couldn't identify. The artistic design of this game is so meticulous, everything feels like it's being used as a vehicle for world building, and no space being taken for granted. The details of the structural support beams supporting the dated retrofitted apartment building in The Glen, the mass produced nature of the beds in the lower status living spaces like Japantown the oppressive corporate intrusion into every space, it really feels like every detail was considered.

I have been mesmerized by the buildings and everything in night city and love the apartments (corpo & glen) throughout the game. It was really great to get some insight into some possible deeper meanings behind the design choices made throughout the game's design. The only apartment you missed though was V's Mansion. It's very similar to the building David ended up in in Edgerunners and I think it's either from the secret ending, or letting Johnny take over (can't recall). You can actually see it out the window of the starter apartment to the right.

This is a fantastic video, making me realize just how much depth there really is to some of the design language in this game. There's a lot of that that is so well designed you just kind of take it in on an instinctual level also, without even having to put much thought into it. Like walking out of the Glen apartment, and having the emotional impact of the transition from that luxury to the homeless camps right beside it.
Also.. a note on the Japantown apartment for anyone else that finds the noise annoying, given its my home of choice on my current save.. the fighting you hear isn't in another apartment, despite what the directionality of the audio would have you think. It drove me mad for a while until I figured it out, but there's a back alley at ground level where some gang members are roughing someone up. You will hear it every time you go to that apartment until you deal with them. And it never spawns anyone else there after you do that, which it would normally do most places those events spawn. When you combine that with how well the sound carries up to the floor your apartment is on when it normally wouldn't for most things at street level, I'd say that was probably an intentional choice, just driving in for the player the kind of neighborhood they just moved into.

The design language in the corpo plaza apartment is really amazing in my opinion.
You enter the corporate world from below, facing oppressive architecture and full body scans. You are judged, weighed and threatened. You take the elevator, traveling through the corpo life from floor to floor, gradually ascending until you make it. You enter your apartment and find the freedom of wood and the view of the city below giving you an impression that you are better than the rabble.
But your freedom is an illusion. The wood panels are thin, and the bamboo, even if it grows quickly, is kept under control. The neomilitarism creeping in from the corners is a reminder of how you've given up a part of yourself to the corporations to afford this life. It is a reminder of the fact that your little oasis of wood with a view is resting within the lap of a corpo building. You are not free. Your cage is simply prettier than everyone else's.
In a sense, with the corpo style being more invasive in the Plaza apartment than anywhere else, perhaps the people who live there are, in fact, less free than the people who live elsewhere. While everyone else are more heavily advertised to, they are not as tightly controlled and monitored.

Personal favourite interior: The Glen. Personal favourite for about everything else: Corpo Plaza.
I'm a bit compulsive about taking every mission I can find, so by the endgame I'm loaded: end up buying every vehicle and apartment just to sink some of them bank balance before leaving the world. I find the Glen apt to be a bit out of the way for my taste, whereas the Plaza is literally central to everything. That black and red finish of the Plaza does not bother me - I even quite like it in the hellway (LOL! What a typo! "Hallway".) outside the apartment. I could really do with the bathroom gaining a lot of white, though.
Really, though, apartments are a waste of time if you can't show them off. IRL comfort matters; in a game, the bed can be made of razor blades and glass shards, and it feels just the same. They're pretty much interchangeable; nothing more than a place to dump your stuff, and grab the occasional nap. Now, if I could invite my friends or partner(s) over for 'flix n chill', and they made comment on the digs or location, it might be a different story.

condensed, cozy, warm, it really feels like someone has taken a pre-fab mass housing apartment and truly made it their own
i always make a point to go home after a big job, light up a cigarette and just sit for a while, listening to Mike Pondsmith jabber about conspiracy theories on the radio
the fact that it’s the only apartment with a guitar is also a huge plus. that combined with the smoking/drinking area allows you to really play the role of a V being slowly influenced by the engram of Johnny

some of the windows in the glen apartment really remind me of the iconic chicago style windows on many 20th century buildings and modern ones. It perfectly communicates that older more loft-like feel

    Great in depth analysis!
All things considered, from the immediate neighborhood, the view, the inside cut of the appartment, the condition of it (including clutter, carpets, ceilings, etc.), the activities in it and the coziness factor:
    1. Japantown
    2. The Glen
    3. Megabuilding H10
    4. Corpo
    4. Northside

I had your first review of Cyberpunk architecture in my watch list for an eternity, but I finally watched it during my lunch break... Then watched the two follow up (this one included) right away. Great videos, and very interesting to see the game through the eye of a professional architecte. And now I wanna play again... Gods, I love this game.

Love the Cyberpunk content! Gotta beg for you to review the architecture in each district! Beats none how they crafted neighborhoods to look and feel like different parts of an actual living city. Just as when seeing scenes from the Edgerunners anime and instantly recognizing the area and district its taken from.
The low light, industrialized streets with stacked containers in Watson, the latin ghetto in the Glen, the cramped style in Kabuki, the old american suburbs turned futuristic filled with entropism in Santo Domingo/Arroyo.
Speaks volumes about the identity of the city they crafted.

It's really cool that they put do much thought into how class effects personal style, aesthetic and also what materials are available to a person who is poor vs very rich. Seems pretty obvious but you'd be surprised how many designers don't consider these details. It's a nice touch that goes a long way in visual storytelling.

Glen apartment is basically my dream house. Open space that isn't empty, lots of light from big windows yet you're high enough to have privacy, all the trappings of modernity but still basic and economical without too much clutter, and i'm a huge sucker for a mezzanine.

That square motel toliet seat looks like a torture device.

I absolutely *love* the vibe of the Glen Apartment. I love the exposed cabling, and how it has matching colors so that it doesn't clash with the rest of the space. I'd love something like that.
