A masterpiece. The whole album is. I can't ever listen to just one track from "Oceanic", I have to listen to the entire thing from start to finish. It flows so well, and tells its own musical story/journey.
Oceanic is my Favorite Isis album. This entire album from front to back is Great. I love how it starts. With the song "The Beginning and the End" and the pocket playing of the drums and the woman doing harmonic vocal hums as a layer over the music... Great band.
I recently had a discussion about why some people like Panopticon more than Oceanic and vice versa. Both are masterpieces, but the production seems to have a pretty big effect. I love how close and suffocating Oceanic sounds - like you're drowning. Whereas Panopticon is way more open and roomy, which I find harder to groove to but others love the brightness and epicness to it. Both insanely good albums but Oceanic's the one for me!
@@thegnjoy Its funny you say that. Do you know what a Panopticon is? You explained Oceanic perfect and once you learn the other word your mind might be blown.
Probably my favorite ISIS track. When they did their reunion show in LA a few years back they opened with it and it was really special. Amazing track. One of my favorite albums of all time.
So cool that you covered this Geebz, it feels like Isis' legacy is falling into obscurity in recent years. You should check out "So Did We" off of their album "Panopticon." Similar feel but more counterpoint guitars and layers.
ISIS has been one of my favorites for many years now. I think you'd really enjoy a nice slow burn from them. I recommend Holy Tears, and Grinning Mouths.
Such an awesome band, and the ones that introduced me to post metal when I saw them open for Tool. Was already a fan of bands like Failure and Hum, so it wasn't much of a leap, but it had a fair impact on the music I would end up playing not long after.
Possibly the most amazing music I've ever listened to. I felt like my entire life I've been searching for the final sound of music and i found it with this band. I couldn't find anything better after these guys. They are the perfect balance of crushing, melodic, they are like a symphony of the senses. A wall of sound. I feel pure atmosphere through their music they paint pictures for me. The whole oceanic album feels like I'm literally experiencing water and beach. It's pure bliss
Amazing. I own the live board recording from that show they released years ago. I love how they had to play Maritime for the first time ever and it’s kinda a train wreck. I was lucky enough to see them live on several occasions, their final show on the west coast being a particularly powerful moment. Cheers, dude.
What I love so much about this album is that it sounds like you are out at sea. The really roomy drums, the heavy chorus tinged bass, the guitar tones, the synth sounds, all of it adds to the atmosphere and makes it feel "Oceanic." Matt Bayless produced this album and he did something similar with Mastodon's album Leviathan.
@@autoscopyman I would have loved to been at that show. I saw Mastodon in concert for the first time last year but I would have loved to see ISIS live just once. A Mastodon/ISIS concert at that time would have been incredible.
I know long comments are redundant but hear me out when I’ll tell you I’m flat out STUNNED at this guys channel! I just stumbled upon his great, in depth and engaging content with his reaction to Mr.Bungle’s “my ass is on fire”. I clicked on this video because I love to see other people react to music I adore and seeing someone who’s brave enough to peer into the phantasmagorical world of mr bungle enticed me even more. I loved every second and actually felt as though he was speaking to me like we were in a really weird Skype call, thus making me curious about his other reactions. This dude does it all! The only thing I wish he’d do is a possible reaction to a beloved band of mine, the butthole surfers. You could listen to anything by them, truly, but I’d recommend “I saw an X-ray of a girl passing gas” off of their album “hairway to Steven” or “human cannonball” off of their best album “locust abortion technician”. This band was my highschool foundation and it brought me some amazing friends and experiences in the process. One last thing, this band and it’s lead vocalist, gibby Haynes, is 100% based around psychedelic trips and they were never not tripping. Though never told to do so, being under the effects of any hallucinogens while listening greatly improves and broadens the songs in a way that you’ll never forget. Love the content Geebz! 🤟🤟
I was lucky enough to see Isis play a farewell show in Portland Maine it was incredible and they played my favorite song off of Oceanic "From sinking" to end their set, I'll always remember it.
Thank you for doing another ISIS song!!! Miss this band dearly. Front row at the metro in Chicago, Aaron Harris's neck muscles while singing were a fucking sight!
A few minutes ago I was a bit melancholic because this week I decided to start a journey till my savings will go away. I always wanted to do that, but you know, work and family and friends is here. However, you only live once, and sometimes it's now or never. So now I'm looking at the sea and thinking that maybe I will hear some music on youtube. And then pops a notification of my beloved channel of yours and you are reacting to one of my favorite bands, and a song of their Oceanic album. So yeah, I'll take that as a sign. Isis always makes me feel emotional and also relieved, and their flow throughout the albums feels like a long journey. Maybe you don't know where are you going, but it is the only thing that you can do. So thanks very much. Love from Tenerife! I'll suggest their song Garden of Light, which is the closer of their album In the absence of truth. Another masterpiece with and amazing final climax.
Saw Isis perform Oceanic in entirety at KOKO in London, mid 2000s. A summer sessions series I think. Added In Fiction to close off. Definitely up there on my ‘best gigs ever’ list. Phenomenal
Hey Geebz! I believe the “high right tom” you were referring to in your first stop is actually the snare drum with the snare turned off. Thanks for the vid!
To be honest, the Stoner Rock/Doom label isn't that far removed from Post Metal as they both fall under the Doom Metal umbrella and have influenced each other. Thank you for another great reaction. It's always a good day when someone does a Post Metal reaction.
Saw them play again back in 2018? i wanna say.. They headlined a charity event for the family of Caleb Scolfield from Cave In. They went under the name "Celestial" for reasons unknown but damn did they bring it. The crowd was in a complete trance and they played this of course. Great band
Hell yes, my favourite Isis song off my fav album!! That bass just kicks ass. Definitely an album one should listen to front to back though, really hard to truly pick a favourite song off of it.
Hey, Geebz! Great work as always. If you want a fun experiment to try when you get some time, listen to Neurosis: Times of Grace and Tribes of Neurot: Grace together. They're meant to work together, however, you can get fun results by starting either album at random times 😆 Or, both are fantastic as individual albums as well. Keep up the much needed respites from my days!
I'm glad you chose something from this album. Someth from Panopticon would be good too. I'd really like to see you check out Palms as well, it's most of Isis, but with Chino from Deftones on vocals.
Isis is one of my favourite bands of all time. If you get the chance you should dig into some metal from Ottawa (capital of Canada). Check out the band Buried Inside. Similar to Isis they’re in that sludge/post-metal genre. My recommendation would be something off their album Chronoclast. Actually, I would recommend listening to the album in one sitting as it was written as one long song, and has this recurring riff that weaves its way throughout. But if I had to suggest one or two tracks I would go with Time as Commodity, and the album closer Time as Resistance.
even if it's a band from boston, asking for their records in new englands record stores 10 years ago caused instant silences... "where would be Isis?" LOL!
Geebz, have you considered doing anything by The Body? They have really dark and sludgy sounding stuff. I'm suggesting either To Attempt Openness or Wanderings as a good starting song.
I'm one of the folks that has been talking about cleans in songs. My comments probably often make it seem like I don't like cleans, but that's not really the case. It's more a matter of how I feel about how the cleans sound. I actually love the mix of cleans and more "extreme" vocals, but it seems very few bands can do it to my satisfaction. Too many times the cleans sound (to my ears, imo, etc.) some combination of generic/glossy/whiny/cheesy/poppy-in-a-cringey-way. It's all subjective, of course, and I don't begrudge people for liking what they like (though it sucks when certain sounds get popular and you hear it everywhere). All vocals are an affectation of a sort - just comes down to the types that don't turn you off for whatever reason. I do think engineering/production probably plays a big role in it, too. Late 90s early 00s this candy-coated sound has reached into all genres (advent of pro-tools seeing widespread use? auto-tune? vocal chorus effects? likely all of that among other factors.)
Awesome band, one that I didn't fully appreciate I think when I first discovered them in my teens. Please react to an amenra track, you really won't regret it
I know there's currently a bad situation surrounding Neurosis and Scott Kelly and fudgikins to him - at least he's "stepped down". Anyway, I'd be super impressed for a Neurosis reaction. VERY consistent catalogue and masters of this genre + bitching Albini production. Intense stuff. "Stones from the sky" - as loud as your neighbours can tolerate ;)
He did “Stripped” from Souls at Zero a while ago, but I agree that he should try something from A Sun That Never Sets, or from The Eye of Every Storm. Neurosis forever!
Couldn't disagree more. If you know the theme of the album, it fits perfectly. However I can still understand your dislike. The singing is used quite sparsely and usually in the back of the mix. It acts for more as an instrument. Later songs have softer vocals, but still rough.
A fantastic band. I had Oceanic and Panopticon on HEAVY rotation back in 05-07.
I still do!

The bassist of Isis has one of the best tones. This song has everything that makes Isis amazing

When they kick out the distortion and have that clean section and drop back into one of the heaviest riffs ever. Pure ecstasy.
ISIS has been one of my favorites for many years now. I think you'd really enjoy a nice slow burn from them. I recommend Holy Tears, and Grinning Mouths.
Hell yes: "Holy Tears". Forever my favourite (even though I love all of Isis's work).
He has already done a slow burn on them but another would certainly be welcome!
This band introduced me to this style of metal, and The Galilean Satellites by Rosetta has been my favorite album of all time ever since
Check out the channel "wherepostrockdwells" for more in the genre
The Beginning and the End is by far the best song on this album.
The entire album is flawless.
My personal favorite song from Oceanic is False Light, but it's such a well crafted album that every song is a good choice as a favorite.
You have to check out "In Fiction", "The Beginning and the End" and "Grinning Mouths".

You should check out Kerretta.
You'll probably dig them too.
hell yeah ive been waiting for you to check out oceanic. glad you did. such a fantastic album. one of a kind sound and feel to it.
The drumming was great during that guitar riff at the end. Groovy and precise at the same time.
"The Begining of the End" is my favorite from them. Sadly, my girlfriend and our two cats don't fully agree with my opinion...
Saw them play this entire album start to finish in London at Koko in July 2006. Best gig ever
