Excellent podcast. I became more of a fan of Justin knowing how he thinks, how much he defends Judo, and that he really seems to think like a judoka in the sense of the concepts that Jigoro Kano left us. And him being someone who was born in the USA, it's even more impressive. Congratulations.
I'm training at White Tiger MMA Lausanne, Switzerland. A very sambo wrestling style gym with 2 judo black belts coachs, the owner is a Russian with bjj brow belt and judo black belt with huge wrestling and sambo background. I notice how judo is very useful by its "simplicity" and straight to the point efficiency. No fancy crap, love it. So, during our wrestling classes, we get introduced to a lot of judo takedowns, and it does work. Judo definitely underrated.
I train in both Judo and Bjj and I do agree that Judo kinda got the short end of the stick from a branding and popularity perspective and that BJJ is basically rooted in Judo But also, how much of this was the Judo community's fault? I got my blackbelt in Judo and my dojo we do a significant amount of newaza (prob about 30%-40% of newaza) due to my sensei also having a BJJ background. But I have trained at other judo dojo where newaza is looked at as an after thought and those judokas in those gym always laughed at me when I want to do newaza and told me "why need Newaza when I can just throw them" (just so they can get armbar by me later in randori). The current ruleset of IJF is killing Judo. We basically excluded a significant part of the art. Just like how BJJ people is training tachiwaza as an after thought. We really need to have more option outside of the IJF that promotes diff kins of competition. As a Judo blackbelt...I say screw the IJF. We need to open up Judo again, allow most of the ols throws that allow leg grabbing and longer time for newaza (we can still do this safely by just restricting a couple throws like kanibasami)
I know it's not quite what you mean but nogi Judo is becoming this in a way. It's popularity increasing in submission wrestling every day. I hope competition Judo can find it's way again it's such an incredible sport and art.
I remem 36:33 ber Alex Ottiano! Great guy! Very skilled judoka! I had the fortune to hand him a loss at the 2000 New York open in the team tournament. 😊
What i learned in newaza judo is pins like north south, and kesa gatami (scarf hold) are not popular in BJJ. Bjj people usually dont know what to do when you get them in pins like that especially north south.
It’s nice to see some of these grapplers reflect on their experiences. I’ve been saying this for years judo is your base, train it young, train wrestling with some judo at 13 to 18 - might get a scholarship. Bjj is just cherries you can train it anytime in your martial art career after your an adult. If you walk into a BJJ gym with 10y experience in judo and wrestling you are going to make blue belt pretty quickly, or your gonna make a lot of whit belts quit, and no gym owner wants that.
Judo emphasises respect for your opponent and aims to develop throwing etc in a controlled manner. The first thing Your child will learn is how to fall safely , which is a useful life skill too!
I’ve done judo and currently doing BJJ. I can say that after a Judo lesson I felt much better than a BJJ lesson. I guess Judo has some heavy throws BUT most of the time you land on strong muscles that don’t create any injury. BJJ you like it or not you will get choked more than once in a lesson. This has left me feeling way more sore than judo. Go for Judo!

Judo is best for the average person, especially if you are from Russia, the US, China, Japan, Korea, central Asia or the middle east. Because those countries have plenty of both wrestlers as well as BJJ people to spar with.
@@thegrapplersperspective judo has more options re: health/longevity. want your knees as messed up as a wrestler's? judo will give that if you want to go there. But, want to still be training at 60 ? Judo can give that to you too if you are careful and willing to maybe forego the championship level. I see more old judoka than old wrestlers. It's a bit better for self defense habits too because it is more likely to emphasize quick throws or trips that end with you standing, rather than more grappling, so you can run away like you should've done in the first place. But to be well rounded it is good to have wrestlers around to give you a hard time. If you are in the UK, I don't know - but if you are american i think you don't need anything but Judo and an open mind, because there will always be tons of wrestlers and BJJ guys to bring in and roll with. My base was BJJ and wrestling, not judo - so I am not being partisan here, it's my honest opinion.
I really dont like judokas complaining about the supposed disrespect for judo. I love judo and bjj. American judokas have to look at themselves to understand why their sport is not so well loved
The jiu jitsu of that time was much different than bjj. Not much ground work, wrist locks, weapon disarms and it was under a battlefield mindset where you throw/disarm your opponent and stab them to death. Bjj is a much different art from traditional jiu jitsu
Japanese Jujutsu is an all encompassing martial art. Kicks, punches, throws, locks. What you're thinking about in regards to BJJ is Ne Waza in Judo that has been elevated in BJJ to a high degree.
Judo came from 3 different kinds of Japanese jujutsu ( which is the correct spelling not what the Brazilians misspelled)the Japanese judoka went to Brazil and thought the gracies newaza judo!!! Either way judo and so called BJJ are both Japanese arts that trace their origins to Japan. Judo deserves way more respect than it gets in MMA or JJ!!
Judo came from jujutsu Jiujitsu is a misspelling of jujutsu which came from a judoka coming to Brazil to teach the Gracie’s, and they renamed it jiujitsu

His brother Jake Flores, was one of the smoothest judo players I've ever seen man. So good!
Amen

Wow, absolutely wow! Love these high level guys who've done everything. None of that salesmen cr*p or internet pundits.
best standup coach for no gi grappling
I watched from Türkiye and learned a lot as a bjj practitioner who started at late ages and now doing wrestling also judo.

Is a moose better than a beaver?

Judo is definitely a benefit 🫡

In Europe is more harder, but I'm trying to do it.😅❤
Because most Judo people do only Judo.
From observation I’ve noticed judo players always beat BJJ and wrestlers.

That was a good listen. Keep at it lads.
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Osoto gari and uchi mata are underrated
I agree. As a white belt Those are also the only 2 throws I can successfully do to people during randori lol
Judo came from JIUJITSU not the other way around. So if any art lost it's luster, it's JUDO.
