What a fantastic video, much appreciated to both of you,😊 the memories came flooding back I was very fortunate 30 years ago to train under Sampson ( Sobel Judo club) I was there for 2 years , it was one of the best experiences of my life ,looking back with fond memories. ( I am 63 now) Sampson was an incredible teacher, so passionate and inspiring. He always gave 100 % to his students no matter who you were from a novice to a black belt treated everyone the same! , then as I progressed i got invited to join in on Thursday night and watch advanced training methods took my judo to a new level .it was something else ! His methods of teaching was exceptional the various throws, ground work ,explaining in detail every aspect so beginners like me would also understand was a big part of the club,😊. I never knew his background ( until I watched the video, Wow brilliant can't wait to the next installment ) Its a shame politics got in the way of his career, but the man Sampson is, it didn’t stop him from sharing his vast knowledge and experience, giving back to others, Its whats matters, his life has touch so many. Fabulous 👌
What an episode!! Truly enjoyable storytelling and words of wisdom. One thing I will say is that loyalty & gratitude are true signatures of a person. A trait not often seen or easily discarded for ambition, “opportunity” or “money” these days. Despite regrets of not going down the Olympic route, you have a business, a family, a son who shares your passion, built up a special Judo club with appreciative, capable & very talented students. Not too many can say this when they look back at their path. Your loyalty, gratitude & respect for your Sensei & organisation has been a blessing and not a curse. You have been rewarded. It’s important younger viewers, especially judokas, watching this appreciate the significance of loyalty & gratitude. More doors & blessings will indeed open up to you too. Looking forward to the next episode!!
What a fascinating story of your life, your father sounds a brave man, a hero. I really appreciate your work as a Jiu Jitsu practitioner, your videos are fantastic. Ef haristo
Thank you for this great podcast! From my own experience, the USA has Exactly the same problems in Judo as the UK if not worse. Please keep up with your exceptional content.
So happy to see this. I remember binge watching your videos 10 years ago after I had to stop training karate. I have always wanted to train Judo, and you have been a huge inspiration. Still haven't found any Judo near me deep in South Texas, but I do BJJ now. Thank you both!
Do you need approval from some association to start a judo club in the UK or is it optional? Would be nice to do a video about all the legal requirements and hurdles for those who have the ambition of opening one. Would also be nice to learn more about British Judo and what it takes to compete in the British Nationals.
@SampsonJudo great chat. I have been doing bjj for 11 years. Done judo here and there. Started back up in November it's such a fun sport. What I enjoyed about the chat is the kinda of be good to people and you'll do well. We have been in business for going on 9 years and that had always been our focus. I've seen lots of people treated poorly by others but at the end of the day there is space for all. The few judo clubs I went to before people were not friendly with new people. I had to look hard for a friendly judo club. Why would anyone want to be anywhere where people are not nice. I think that is a big difference with judo and bjj. From my experience. Super interesting to hear ahout judo back in the day.
Sad to hear about the divisivness between organisations and disparity in quality in clubs. I can only speak from experience having started late on the mat (44yrs) because of my kids starting. Its a family run club with a real family feel.
Glad to hear you found a good club. Not all people are bad, nor all clubs. However, there is an unfortunately a big slice of bad in the U.K. that is rotting our art.
Thanks for sharing your story. Can't believe 2 hours went by so quickly! Very interesting to hear about the politics amongst the UK judo organizations that has created challenges in growing the sport and developing Olympic-level talent. It seems that we share a similar situation in the USA, which has been covered a bit by Shintaro Higashi, another prominent voice in the TH-cam judo community. Any chance of seeing a conversation with Shintaro in a future podcast episode?
@@maestrobks thanks for listening! Yes political issues run deep over here. I have not heard Shintaro’s perspective on the US situation. Do you have a link? But perhaps we could do a joint episode in the future, who knows!

This highlights just how transformative youth exposure to activities / hobbies / skills can be. How many other Sampson's are out there for Judo, or music, or carpentry or whatever else you can think of?

Great talk guys. Has Sampson ever talked to Chadi? Sounds like the pair of you would have a lot in common on the state of Judo.
Thank you! Not yet. He did comment on a video of mine once, but we should probably connect properly.
I am so glad to be here to watch this. Love you Sampson

Confirmed. You need like 80 points last I looked. It changed a lot over covid. I remember doing 10 once it was awesome. Absolute is so fun!!!
Thank you for confirming! I’ll let Sam know.

Very professional. More episodes would be great. Where does the name Sampson come from? How difficult was it for Sampson to learn English?
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. Learning English was difficult, but I was young so it was okay.

I don't want bjj in thr Olympics because they wreck sports.
