Scroll Wheel Not Clicking - Here's the Fix (for Razer Chroma - & apparently others too)

  • Don't ask why, but this expensive gaming mouse has an annoying design flaw. Picture your shower drain building up muck until it stops draining completely. That's basically what happens to the middle scroll button - dust, oils, grime, humidity (your own sweat) builds up until the gooey mess prevents the switch from moving up and down.
    Most folks at this point tend to buy a new mouse while uttering profanity and other choice words about Razer. However, if you're the handy type who's not afraid to try a fix, follow these instructions with a screw driver, a mini straw and some WD-40. We'll show you how to make that dang button work again.
    A Backgrounder
    Our used Death Adder Chroma was an Ebay purchase, and of course the guy who sold it to us "didn't know" it had this problem. He was of course, selling it for his girlfriend. Yes, of course he was.
    At any rate, we searched and found other youtubers' instructions for a fix, none of which worked. For the mouse to be in such poor shape, it must've lived its life in a really humid and dusty environment. We theorized how the microswitch could have been stuck and thought of applying a lubricant or cleaner.
    The choice boiled down to either alcohol or WD-40, and since we didn't have access to the innards of the switch, WD-40 seemed the best option - and we happily uncrossed our fingers after the magic moment of the working click.
    Theoretically, this method should work with any brand of mouse. I've never come across any other mouse with this problem, however. Apparently, it's quite a unique trait to the select few, including the Chroma.
    If you ARE looking for a replacement mouse and have loyalty to Razer, you might want to try their "Elite" mouse model. If you'd rather try something else, the HyperX Pulsefire Surge comes to mind too.

    I had to push the middle mouse button pretty hard to get it to register the click. Found a tutorial that said there's dust/dirt below the wheel. Opened the mouse, nothing. I've had this problem for probably a bit over a year by now. Then I found this video, tried it the next day, and at first nothing changed so I was a bit disappointed, BUT after clicking the middle mouse button for like half a minute straight the WD40 finally got into the button below the wheel and IT WORKS LIKE NEW AGAIN! Thank you so much!!

    so I searched middle mouse button not working hoping I could find something. Saw this and went that literally the exact mouse I have. This was absolutely perfect and I imagine this model does this all the time because you posted about it but I just wanted to thank you.

      You're welcome man! People really like this mouse, and buy two or even three because of this problem. Razer has not fixed this, so you have to find a way to do it yourself.
      You can use this method if it happens again - just be careful not to use too much WD-40 at once.

      You're welcome! It was either that or throw the mouse away, so there was nothing to lose.
      By the way, if it gets stuck again (depends on the environment and the particles I think - dust, humidity, etc.) you can always repeat this method, but don't overdo the WD-40. Too much and the clickiness goes away and you lose the tactile function.

      @@FirstL00k Aw man, I'm afraid it's too late for that... *100% works.* I have a small set of micro screwdrivers. With a little patience, I was able to remove the adhesive "feet" and bottom sticker without separating the glue. You can't even tell it was taken apart.
    Another trick - if you want to improve the accuracy of the scroll wheel, take the sensor chip off and clean the "eyes" with a Q-tip and alcohol solvent. You can see the chip I'm referring to at 4:22, it's just below his thumb and has one small screw holding it on.

    Followed your instructions and it worked perfectly, first time. I had tried quite a number of things that other videos suggested - smashing it as hard as I could on the wheel, using a screwdriver to push the button down harder, etc. None worked. The only downside to this fix (or any fix) is that you have to remove the rubber feet and double sided tape. It never goes back to how it was before in my opinion, but it's at least working and I'm sure I'll get another 1-2 years out of it. Thank you FirstL00k.

    Thanks alot for this video! I've ruined alot of mouses by using the scroll-click too much. Different brand breaks in different ways. I was very happy to learn that the way my Deathadder v.2 broke was very fixable using this video. Also being lazy and ready to buy a new one I used whatever I had home for this, which happened to be standard hand disinfection -- worked like a charm. Again thank you for this!

      You're welcome! If there's a lot of gunk in the switch, it might take several tries. My first 2 tries and it stopped working after a while, but from the third time, it's worked great.
      I think it may happen again in a year or two when the gunk builds up. The design of their mice aren't so good in this respect.

      Same thing happened to me too. I did mine twice before the switch worked at every click. But once it works, don't do it until you have more symptoms - I used WD40 a third time to make the video, and the click became too smooth (it clicked too easily) - but went back to normal after a while.

    Jesus, if I knew it was this easy to fix I would've done this months ago. I used to have to really press down on the MMB to the point where it'd start to strain my finger. Now the lightest touch is enough to trigger a response. You saved me from potential Carpal tunnel in my finger, & my Chroma from going to the trash! Haha. Works. Even if the middle mouse button clicks perfectly, and it appears as if the click wound not register; it still requires some greasing. This is the fix.

    • @1SaG
      @1SaG ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure I'd want to use WD40 for this. It's a mineral oil based product that might start to gunk up over time. If it's plastic on plastic lubrication that's needed here, I'd probably try some sort of silicone grease rather than WD40. If I ever try this fix, I'll probably put some of the silicone/Teflon paste on there I use to grease other plastic devices. It's safe for both plastic on plastic and plastic on metal lubrication.

    Sir, this worked like a wonder, on my middle click, left click which was also faulty, and also on my Xbox Elite Series 2 Right bumper (Which I already ordered replacement switch this morning but after trying this I canceled). This just saved me quite a few bucks and avoiding soldering/desoldering, which I don't have that much experience with and probably would have ended up messing it up!

    • @FirstL00k
      @FirstL00k  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @FirstL00k
      @FirstL00k  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks man, I appreciate it! On clicks with micro switches like in Chroma, I think you're stuck with what you have unless you can replace the micro switches (requires re-soldering in new ones.)
      If there's an electronics shop near you like Best Buy, I can recommend trying out all the buttons on every mouse until you find the ones you like the feel of. I do it sometimes and am surprised at the variety.

    Dude you are awesome, thank you! It worked for me. At first it did not, even stopped clicking, there were not even a click sound. I realized maybe I dropped a bit more wd40. I let it dry, the next day it was working like a charm. Now I have a backup mouse thanks to you! I have stopped buying razer products, they have a very short life spin and are overpriced. My room looks like a razer garbage store. I have a ouroboros, mamba, DeathAdder chroma, DeathAdder elite, DeathAdder essentials. All have double-clicking or wheel issues.
