As someone familiar with fake fur and how insanely bad that is for the environment (and anyone inhaling it) using existing animal fiber seems very ethical. Ash turned out fantastic! Great work as always !!!
I think it's mainly that using real fur goes against the film's morals. How can we watch this film and listen to what it's saying when the puppets are literal foxes skin being posed. I think it's maybe fine but using wool could have worked, at least they didn't buy new. I'm also against most taxidermy though as I think it's disrespectful to the animal.
@@oogyboofI think taxidermy when it comes to insects and ethically passed birds is somewhat okay as long as it is treated with respect. Mammals is a bit of a tougher one. If the animal died of natural causes, sure. But usually when an animal dies of natural causes, the pelt wouldn’t be good enough quality to taxidermy. Hunting is definitely an iffy thing, but if the meat is completely used up and then the animal is taxidermied with respect I can somewhat understand that. I don’t understand trophy hunting nor taxidermy when it comes to pets. It just depends on the person.
I had to get raw alpaca hair from a local farmer for a werewolf baby doll and I just straight up told the farmer what I was going to do with it. She was delighted! You'd be surprised how much fun telling people about your uncommon hobbies can be. 😊
As a person who dives into vulture culture and taxidermy, I think as long as Wes ethically sourced the animal fur from already existing products/humanely euthanised animals, but also, I haven't really found much online about Anderson using animal fur on his puppets?? Maybe I'm not typing in the right stuff, but even just looking up 'did wes anderson use real animal fur on his puppets for fantastic mr. fox?' comes up with like, just one article.. So maybe he wasn't rlly using animal fur on his puppets?? :(
I agree! He was repurposing things that already existed. He didn’t buy raw fur or anything of the like, he just found things that already existed and gave them new life. I think too many people don’t understand that fur and animal products can be sourced ethically. Yes it was made from real fur but Anderson didn’t actually kill any of the animals. Honestly, it’s likely that fur would have ended up in the trash.
my question is: was it his idea to use repurposed hair or was it the artists involved that chose this since they are quoted in saying that Wes's decision didnt sit right with them, so they looked at more ethical ways to achieve the look Wes demanded? Bc the way the quote is, it sounds like using used fur was not up to Wes. Wes just wanted the aesthetic.
The artist themselves cant make the decision at the end since they have to get it approved by the director and producer so i assume they came up with ideas, went to anderson with the ideas and thats how they were able to get repurposed fur.
This movie has been a comfort film of mine since I was a child I always felt so seen by Ash as someone who is neurodivergent, possibly autistic, and also has a learning disability so when Ash and his mom has that talk about being different in the sewers I felt so seen you did Ash so much justice Etellan he looks absolutely amazingly Edit: I was recently diagnosed officially with Autism!!! Ash is one of those characters that I forget exists, but when I remember them, it's just immediate love and appreciation for them. Ash is such a good study on growing up and being a weirdo. Great doll, as always.
I think reusing and upcycling animal fur is quite a sustainable choice, not to mention that we are already living in so much plastic, no need to make new when you can reuse some coat, that's eaten by moths or like you said, shaven furs and hair It's not like creators of the movie specifically hunted down some foxes for that (or commissioned so) Taxidermy also exists and can be ethical too, so, idk
I was always under the assumption that those were red grapes on his carton? I've actually never had a purple grape, just green and red, but I suppose the availability of certain varieties is different everywhere. About the sourcing of hair - the way they handled it for the movie sounds very safe, repurposing vintage items is always better than finding new things. The way you found material also sounds like a great solution. I totally get why Wes Anderson would have wanted real animal hair, and I don't think he intended to be harmful, but maybe he could have communicated with his dollmakers more about sourcing so he didn't sound as suspicious, haha! Amazing video as always! They're always so calming, and the artwork is beautiful. Thank you for making one of my favorite characters look so lively and colorful!
I agree with the fur issue, if he repurposed found items like coats I don't see a problem. Only if he was actively hiring hunters to get him fur would there be an ethical issue in my mind. And fun fact, the juice box might show apples as a little wink to grape juice mostly being made with apple juice! Apple juice works really well as a "base" juice, so a lot of "100% Pure Juice" uses it as a base, it helps with flavor of some fruits and to stretch the juice they're making, like grape juice. Pear juice also works like that. They can still call it 100% juice, and "no sugar added", since technically they're not actually wrong lol.
@@SharauniThat’s actually really interesting! I always wondered why a lot of juice cartons would say “100% fresh orange juice” but then you look at ingredients and there’s at least 20% apple juice 😂 I suppose the wording is the loophole, like you said. im not sure how it deepens the message of the movie for Wes to choose to do what the villain of the film was doing. Wes wanted it for the aesthetic and the puppeteers found a more ethical solution bc the request didnt sit right with them.
@@neonice Then you have an extrenely surface level view of using animal products. Roadkill exists, zoo animals naturally passing or passing due to medical needs exist, there is nothong wrong with using parts of these animals for art.
@@hotwaterisspicyWes Anderson used a previously manufactured fur coat to create living figures. You are so blind. You’re the kind of person that shouldn’t be allowed to view art because of how poorly you interpret it. Please try using your brain more often.
@@k9_kadaver you're missing the original point here. of course animals dying of natural causes exist. but that wasnt the message wes anderson was making, nor was it how the OP of this thread is saying. Wes liked the aesthetic of animal fur and the puppeteers were tasked with making it happen. they found the ethical solution. Not Wes. Wes was just focused on making his film look the way he wanted, regardless of the ethical implications of it. And animals dying of natural causes does not negate that humans are cruel and irresponsible towards other beings (and fellow humans) both those things can be and are true.
7:56 yooo rotten mango fan spotted!! Seriously though, Ash looks so amazing!! He looks so tiny omg, this might have inspired me to watch Fantastic Mr. Fox for the first time

they are infact grapes on the juice box, you can see in the cross section that it's a grape. They appear redder than usual however, cuz they come from the same farm as the "reddest juiciest apples" farmed by none other than farmer bean The reason it may have looked like an apple "drop" is cuz its just a grape cut in half.
This is so beautiful, by far one of my favorite videos of all time, I unironically cried? The attention to detail, the care, this was so healing to watch, i want to be like you ❤️
Welcome back Etellan! Your Ash from Fantastic Mr. Fox is so stinking cute! I love hearing the little facts you put in your videos. I had no idea the puppets in the movie were made of real animal fur! I always thought the fur movement in the movie was so unique and thought it was cool because to me it almost looked like there was a wind breeze which brought more life to the characters.
Oh my goodness this is so beautiful I think hand placing the fur gave it such an amazing unique effect. Your dolls always have such breathtaking craftsmanship and detail and it really shows in this doll.
this is by far my favourite doll youve ever made. the thought and artistry and detail you put into it is amazing. this makes me even more excited for any other project you tackle in the future
What really blew me away is how you managed to ethically reproduce such authentic and similar looking fur. I can see there were many deeply challenging areas and learning curves, but the experience you gained here is unique and massive and your ingenuity in every part of the process was deeply impressive. This was fascinating, educational, fun and to me very engaging and funny and you cant argue with the beauty of the result. Bow to your skill for sure. All you learned here was well worth 8 months.
I just watched this movie again with my little brother, and he loved so much that he’s reading the book. I’ve always been fascinated with the art of claymation, and Fantastic Mr. Fox in particular, I’m so happy to see your interpretation of it ❤
It might have been a very arduous way of adding the fur, but it translates your style so well! Like I didn’t think it would get your art style so well but you did it! Also when the artist said they used their own hair: it sounds like they did that and lied to Anderson being like “yeah we used animals 👀” cuz humans are technically animals.
It's good to have you back! no worries about the cryptid energy, I'm absolutely here for it what an absolutely gorgeous project! The intense look ash tends to have came across so so well! I love how you always take the scalability of fabrics into account
I’ve missed your video’s so much! they’re so calming and your intricacy with your art is so beautiful to watch (this doll is no exception). i love this movie sooo much so this doll is just even cooler to me
I truly adore the style you use to make your dolls and the absolute passion you can feel and see in all of your projects and I am so excited to see what you will do in the future 😁
on the ethical-ness of using real fur, i think it's alright so long as no new animals had to die for the project and they were getting their fur from older garments. I've seen some fur clothing come back into style because it was someone's grandma's fur coat or it was being sold at a thrift store, and i think reusing old fur garments instead of making new ones is the better alternative. I still think there are way better alternatives to that (like wool and such) but i'd rather have someone reuse an old fur garment than toss it away. Synthetic fibers also aren't great for the environment so reusing older fur instead of getting synthetic is more of the eco-friendly option. (also just a side note if someone tries to sell you "vegan" leather or fur, that's just plastic. there are some plant based leathers but they market as plant-based not vegan. you're better off reusing older leather or fur because that can naturally breakdown and wont be polluting the earth for 1000+ years)
You could have easily given up and never let this project see the light of day but you didn’t. You spent an incredible amount of time and patience on this and it shows. You are so inspiring!!
I LOVE this video!! It has everything a person could want! Not only do we get a a calm and relaxing voice to listen to but we also get to see a satisfying clips during the making-of of the doll! ALSO A CUTE BIRD??!!
8:04 where is the little strawberry guy sticker on your sewing machine from? I’m in love with the colours, and it would make a lovely doll! I’ve also been thinking about your content and your work a lot as of late, seeing you pop up with one of my favourite characters ever is a gift ❤ he was worth every second of work.
Fantastic Mr. Fox is one of my favorite movies and your Ash looks incredible!!! From the stiff way he holds himself to his little angry eyes, you've perfectly captured everything! So talented!
I hope you know this video gave me a very comforting, nostalgic feeling. It reminded me of how during quarantine, I often felt the urge to create and make things that took longer then normal. I love it!
What an absolutely incredible doll! I can see why it took so long to complete. Outstanding! As for the ethical issue of using animal fur, I don't quite see the problem if the material was taken from second hand items of clothing. It's not contributing to violence or cruelty, I think of it more as recycling. Advocacy against animal cruelty is something I'm also passionate about. At risk of sounding militant, I think the best way to help them is to stop eating them... Again, the doll is beautiful. I'm a huge etellan fan. Keep creating. ❤❤❤
As much as I understand why you'd be frustrated with yourself over how much of a perfectionist you can be, I genuinely feel like your work is such high quality that I could see it in a film.
I’ve somehow never watched this movie, and if I did, I was probably really young?? I’m guessing the reason why on the juice box, there’s apples because he’s still a part of this group, but he’s just different in his own way. He’s comfortable with himself, but he’s also comfortable being a part of something that he knows he’s different from.

Very much the opposite unless with "deepening the message" you mean that humans are cruel and irresponsible towards other living beings..
So very very excited to see an etellan upload
7:56 yooo rotten mango fan spotted!! Seriously though, Ash looks so amazing!! He looks so tiny omg, this might have inspired me to watch Fantastic Mr. Fox for the first time
Omg lol I was searching for this
the scream i let out as soon as i saw the thumbnail!! not only is my favorite doll painter back, but she's making one of my favorite characters in my comfort film!! gosh 8 months is no joke, all that love and effort definitely shined through, and i would have watched an even longer video detailing the process of making Ash!! you've definitely outdone yourself once again, and this video was very much worth the wait!! 💖💖💖
they are infact grapes on the juice box, you can see in the cross section that it's a grape.
They appear redder than usual however, cuz they come from the same farm as the "reddest juiciest apples" farmed by none other than farmer bean
The reason it may have looked like an apple "drop" is cuz its just a grape cut in half.
My mom was friends with the Anderson brothers in college, she said they were very nice and tbh I think they would love this and your entire style :))
Fox in particular, I’m so happy to see your interpretation of it ❤
I am amazed by your work! All of the dolls you make look so ethereal and professional, and your videos are just so comfotable to watch! Keep going!
It's good to have you back! no worries about the cryptid energy, I'm absolutely here for it
what an absolutely gorgeous project! The intense look ash tends to have came across so so well! I love how you always take the scalability of fabrics into account
28:32 LOLLLL you couldve just said you were doing an art project of animal character, imagine all the things he was thinking of💀
He looks so precious I love him
He looks perfect! Thanks for not giving up on this project!
I’ve missed your video’s so much! they’re so calming and your intricacy with your art is so beautiful to watch (this doll is no exception). i love this movie sooo much so this doll is just even cooler to me
The final product is so cute!
I'm going to cry, Fantastic Mr. Fox is my comfort movie and this doll makes me so happy.
OMG I LOVE FANTASTIC MR. FOX
This is so good I thought it was from the actual movie when I first saw it!!
Ash turned out fantastic! 💖💖💖 And it's great to see you back. 😊
I truly adore the style you use to make your dolls and the absolute passion you can feel and see in all of your projects and I am so excited to see what you will do in the future 😁
Love your craftsmanship and voice, subbed
Your dolls are just gorgeous, I love them so much! And you doing Ash is so cool and just perfect, I love it
Fantastic Mr. Fox is an amazing movie!, it's the first time i watch one of your videos and I LOVE the process (and your voice)
on the ethical-ness of using real fur, i think it's alright so long as no new animals had to die for the project and they were getting their fur from older garments.
(also just a side note if someone tries to sell you "vegan" leather or fur, that's just plastic. there are some plant based leathers but they market as plant-based not vegan. you're better off reusing older leather or fur because that can naturally breakdown and wont be polluting the earth for 1000+ years)
7:57 watching stephanie soo is so true
I’m so happy and excited to watch this!!
omg this is my sign to make my own Ash doll, i’ve been wanting to for years but youve made it seem not so hard!! he turned out amazing by the way
Omg he looks incredible!! This is such a labor of love, you should be proud
for fine lettering/detail on tiny pieces i find using a needle point oe tooth pick and dotting the paint on easier on the eyes and hands
I absolutely adore how you've done this and how it turned out. He looks amazing!
You could have easily given up and never let this project see the light of day but you didn’t. You spent an incredible amount of time and patience on this and it shows. You are so inspiring!!
Oh my goodness this is gorgeous, he looks so good!! Those little props are soooo precious as well!! 🤩💕
Welcome back, etellan~ I am so excited to see your process and the wonderful results at the end~
This is absurd. She nailed the vibe. LOVE the choice and the fur is incredible. This doll has a soul.
amazing music choices for this video
Welcome back! I feel so attatched to this movie and character in particular. Your videos never fail to comfort and amaze me. Thank you so much
My friend made me watch Mr. Fantastic fox and I'm sending this video to them immediately
I LOVE this video!! It has everything a person could want! Not only do we get a a calm and relaxing voice to listen to but we also get to see a satisfying clips during the making-of of the doll! ALSO A CUTE BIRD??!!
Fantastic Mr. Fox is one of my favorite movies! This just made my day!! ❤️
THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL AND IMPRESSIVE!!! GREAT WORKKKK.
(Commenting to boost up your video and also to say that you did a really good job)
Fantastic Mr. Fox is one of my favorite movies and your Ash looks incredible!!! From the stiff way he holds himself to his little angry eyes, you've perfectly captured everything! So talented!
Ash is my favorite character in the film! So glad to see this beautiful version of him. Thank you for your hard work
Ash is my favorite character from FMF and I absolutely LOVED how this turned, he's so cute! ❤️
I hope you know this video gave me a very comforting, nostalgic feeling. It reminded me of how during quarantine, I often felt the urge to create and make things that took longer then normal. I love it!
AAAHHH I LOVE ASH AND MR FANTASTIC FOX. AMAZING WORK. LOVED IT!!!
this is soooo impressive
I’m an artist myself, and you are just so calming to watch. Just a beautiful voice to listen to
Your creation is a JEWEL! This movie had a great impact on me, and I'm really happy for you doing Ash. He's stunning!✨
Fantastic Mr. Fox is a absolute masterpiece. I love how you brought Ash to life!
Stunning model! Amazing work!
OMG! Finally, somebody doing this this movie is criminally underrated! I am begging you to do Kristofferson next 😭
This is beautiful! I love your art style so much!
He's absolutely perfect! Looks just like the model in the movie and I love his eyes so much.
Oh my! I love the way you made Ash and using the different sock sizes as mini knit is genius!!!
I gasped so loud when I saw the thumbnail. This is absolutely gorgeous thank you for taking the time to share this with the world.
I looove this!!! It turned out so cute, I love how grumpy he looks
He's so adorable, love how you did the fur
I’m impressed with the puppet and I don’t think you took too long with the fur it must’ve been so hard to do this! Such detailed work
ive had this video in my watch later for a million years and am SO glad i finally watched it,,,it deserves so much more attention, your work is mad cool and your editing style and music used just pull everything together so nicely this video was so good to draw to and watch
13:54 The idea of you using games workshop paint is so funny to me; like, you've got all this lovely cutesy equipment in your workspace and then there's just one grungy paint pot labelled "Grungor's Bile" or some such nonsense, lol
He looks incredible, glad to see you back with such a beautiful project!
OH MY GOD I LOVE FANTASTIC MR FOX THE MOVIE AND I LOVE ASH :D this is such a beautiful and detailed recreation of him!
Etellan! This video was wonderful, so much hard work, patience & time, that definitely did not go un-noticed or un-appreciated! The final product of Ash & all of his little props and poses was incredible!, it's one of my favourite films & you did such a great job - your work is always done with such love & care! I really hope you are doing well. 💖
Oh my goodness, Ash is my favourite character, your model is spectacular, I LOVE IT! wow
The second I saw the thumbnail, I had the Boggis Bunce & Bean song running through my head. Beautiful work! Ash is one of my favorites and I always get a kick out of his little bandit hat.
If you notice in her older videos she was much more soft spoken and we barely saw her face so it makes me really happy seeing her being more and more confident and showing her lovely face more :))
