      They will come when BMW can sell them at a price they can make a nice living from. those 316i were indeed premium compared to for example a base model Ford Mondeo, and got a much higher price tag to boot. Same will be true for the i1 compared to its rivals.

    So 4.38 to 60 is acceptable, but just a hint over 300 miles with a 100 kWh battery isn’t. Especially charging with slow 400VDC. So Jeeves is going to be able to pick up the dry cleaning or charge the car but not both.😏

    The 60 comes from previous BMWs. Traditionally, on the 7 series, a suffix "40" would denote a V8 ( which was a 4.0L engine) and a "50" would signify a V12 (which was around 5.0L). For example, in the E32/38 7 series, there were 4 (I think) models you could have and two engines; a 740i or a 740iL and a 750i or a 750iL. The "L" would be there if the model was a long wheelbase model. and the 40 or the 50 after the 7 told people what engine was in the car. Somewhere along the way, a 760i was added when BMW moved to a 6 liter V12. My guess is that BMW just threw the 60 on there for heritage's sake and chose 60 as they might see electric motors as an equivalent to the V12 as it is now the top of the line 7 series.
    BMW's naming scheme is endlessly complicated and it's almost impossible to tell when a number means one thing and when it means something else, especially with all the electric cars floating around.

    • @GoldenCroc
      @GoldenCroc ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, not exactly and I will explain why: The numbers really were supposed to represent the apparent capacity of the engine, not the number of cylinders. so 40 is four liter (4.0) , 50 is five liter (5.0) etc. The number of cylinders increasing by 2 for every number 10 (1 liter) is just a function of BMWs using 500cc cylinders when the v8 and V12 engines were introduced.
      So the number really isnt that complicated, its still supposed to be based on apparent capacity, or these days more accurately represented as the power level an engine of that apparent capacity would be expected to output. So Brooks sort of got it right.

    • @lucaduina2781
      @lucaduina2781 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GoldenCroc Right -- I did mention that 40 related to 4.0 and 50 to 5.0, in a bit of a roundabout way I suppose. And you correctly write that the number increasing by 10 relates to the engine capacity rising by 1 liter. But, and I think you would agree, the 500cc cylinder situation is only the case with the V8, not the V12 as the V8 was introduced as a 4.0L and the V12 as a 5.4L. Later, with the 760i, BMW used 500cc cylinders. Funnily enough though, the V8s are no longer always 500cc cylinders (later iterations of the N63 V8, for example).
      You're right, the number isn't that complicated on the E32/E38 and some other earlier BMWs. Where it gets a little confusing for me is why a car labeled 740i has an I6 instead of a V8 (this was the case with the G11 7 series).

    • @GoldenCroc
      @GoldenCroc ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@lucaduina2781 No, the v12 actually was introduced as a 5.0 liter in the E32 chassis when it first came out, it got 5.4 only after several years in the e38. It was also the 90s generation BMW cars that started deviate more commonly from the capacity as a x/10 of whats stamped on the bootlid when the earlier engines got updated.
      Examples: 5.4 v12 in the 750i e38, 4.4 v8 in the 540i e39, 2.8 straight six in the 323i e36.
      You will have to go back to the 1980s for it to be almost always be corresponding to the bootlid, but even then there was for example the 745i from the early 1980s already, which used a turbocharged straight 6 (of just 3.2 liter from the start), just like the "40i" does today.
      So I see why you thought it might be like you stated, but only indirectly. Perhaps you mixed up their engine codes (which arent a part of any model name or written on the car) as the number?
      For example: engine code M*4*0B18 (the four is 4 cylinder code)
      engine code M*5*0B25 (the five is 6 cylinder code)
      engine code M*6*0B40 (the six is 8 cylinder code)
      engine code M*7*0B50 (the seven is 12 cylinder code)
      engine code S*8*5B50 (the eight is 10 cylinder code, because the v12 came out 17 years earlier and had already used the *7*).
      Long post but hopefully it should clesr up a bit.. I have been into BMW engines for a long time... 😄

      I think its a competitor in many more prospective buyers mind than not. Cant be many (as a percentage) potential customers that really care about 9 second quarter miles really. I would think once you get to the level of 12-13 seconds, most buyers in this categorie think its "good enough". Certainly in its home country of germany for sure those cusomers are in the majority. I would think that even goes for the US as well.

    • @ChosenMJ

      @@GoldenCroc Yeah I only brought up 1/4 mile times and such because Brooks was using that metric. I'm sure some buyers in that $150K price point may consider interior space and appointments over brutal acceleration. It really comes down to what you prioritize in a car. For me, the interior is very nice but too cluttered and thus a distraction for me. I like simplicity and form over function with performance that puts a smile on my face.

I can see if there was an electric M5 or something, then yeah, compare them. This is a straight luxury car. Not meant to be a 0-60 rocket. Just so happens that it’s electric as well. Electric doesn’t equal automatically compare to a plaid. The “60” stands for performance. Again, a number doesn’t equal performance. Just as the Taycan Turbo/Turbo s is directed at performance. Is it silly? Absolutely.

    Why did you need to go to the front to use the control in order to move the front seat forward? If this is the only way to do it, BMW need to rework the controls of this big a$$ boat. It should be smarter than this. When the rear passenger tries to open the panel and the front seat is in the way, it should also sense that there no one in the front seat and prompts the rear passender to move the front seat through the touch screen control on the back door... if there is a driver in the seat and it is also in the way of the panel, it should say panle can't open cuz front seat is in the way and occupied. Car and drivers and others rate the i4 number one in its class over the 3rd place Tesla. Others say the i7 is Rolls Royce comfort for a fraction of the price.

      I think Tesla is going for a different "luxury" than the traditional. Someone earlier stated that all of those buttons and gadgetry and stuff is great for the younger crowd but at some point you just want the basics and then you drive. It's just gimmickery to give you the sense you're getting more so they can put a higher price tag on it. Not fooled. They can keep that 💩. I just want to drive. 💯💯

    EVs are on a different level when it comes to power, so it's kind of sad to see how little power these mainstream companies are putting into them. 500hp sounds decent in a regular car, but in EV world that is baby's first horsepower levels. The Plaid and the Lucid are making double the power at the same price, and quite frankly I expect to see 700-800hp in a car like this, at a minimum.
    It seems they were so determined to get a higher range number that they sacrificed the BMW mantra of lots of power in a luxury vehicle.

      This isn’t a GT3. It’s a car which will mostly be sold in Asia where the vast majority of people who buy them will sit in the back in traffic. The 32inch screen aint for the driver’s purpose now is it. Pretty certain BMW know this hence why they feel 500bhp is plenty for the person being paid to turn the wheel.
