- DISCLAIMER: in this video, there is a high pitch noise from the critter schreck installed in the car we are working on. This noise is not noticeable for all viewers. We apologize for not capturing this during the video take or edit. TH-cam videos cannot be edited after upload. So, it is not possible to add a filter or similar now. We could only cut the entire scenes out and we did this in the beginning of the video. Now thanks to all the complaints, other viewers also miss out on these scenes, even if their hearing does not provide them the negative experience of the high pitch noise. Please remember, you watch the videos for free and you are not required to complain about the noise in the comments to us. If it bothers you that much, just watch something else and tune back in next week. I added a permanent lowpass filter in my editing software and nobody will ever hear a frequency above 9 khz in any of our future videos.
Thanks for watching (or not watching)!

--- ORIGINAL VIDEO DESCRIPTION ---
In this week’s episode, we bring new life to an old friend - a 2003 Land Rover Freelander 1 TD4 with the trusty BMW engine and an impressive 265,000 km on the clock. This car holds a special place in our hearts, as Vera drove it for 10 (!) years, so when it failed its MOT (or TÜV, as we say in Germany), we couldn’t let it head to the scrapyard.
The Freelander’s new owner asked for our help, and we couldn’t resist giving this tough little SUV another chance at life. Over one weekend and three long evenings, we tackled several tricky repairs, including:
Replacing the clutch
Repairing the rear differential mounts, a common issue with these cars.
Resolving a stubborn EGR problem, which proved to be quite the challenge!
Join us (Vera and Christian) when we complete this job, share repair tips, and enjoy a few laughs along the way. Whether you're a Freelander fan or just love seeing old cars restored, this episode is packed with moments to inspire and entertain.

Thanks for watching,
Vera & Christian
You two are absolute heros, working in the dark late in the evening, and early in the morning, to help out a neighbour, and all with such humour. You have my utmost admiration.
😀🙏🙋♀️
Anyone else knackered just watching this?
Absolutely exhausted, mind blowing attention to detail.
@@thomasrogers4534 you have to be kidding me.
Yes! At first I thought about getting my own project Land rover then realised I have Christians desire to fix things and get them right but not his tools and most importantly his ability! Id spend my life under the damn thing! 😂
I love the interaction between these two, they are brilliant. ❤❤
Yes I have a 2007 sante fe from new with 400k up that needs a new clutch/flywheel, now I see why it’s a minimum of 8 hrs labour and parts are 1200 euro which in effect makes it uneconomic to repair….my sante fe was a wonderful jeep but I am not lucky enough to have neighbours like Christian and Vera 😂
That’s a huge amount of work!! A real labour of love. I hope your neighbour appreciates it.
Oh yeah, he is the nicest guy. 😀👍🙋♀️
That two post lift has got to be one of the best investments you guys have made. Imagine trying to do that job on axle stands! Having Mrs Organised looking after the parts you take off has to be a big bonus as well.
We have done everything we do now, on axle stands before. But it is much faster, especially with us doing videos every single week. 👌😀🙋♀️
If I was your neighbor, I would be helping you all of the time...bravo,you make my dream come true....excellent work....greetings from Greece....keep going....the amount of work you are doing is enormous ,and a very difficult brand of cars...thank you....
What a great effort. Agree with Christian- I had the engine in a Rover 75 and it was still going strong at 500,000 miles
As a DIYer I look forward every week to your video and I watch in awe of your skills and terror of the jobs you take on. Hello from Scotland.❤
Kristian:Master Mechanic. Vera: Master quality controller. Thanks for the effort, and showing the insane construction off Freelanders!!!!!
Your husband tells you not to talk but when he torques he just says "click, click". Seriously , well done both of you. You saved this old vehicle from becoming cans for soup. A professional workshop would have charged much more for the repair than the vehicle is worth on paper, if indeed you could find someone to do the repair. I certainly hope that the video gets enough views to compensate for your time and effort. Berlin is still standing.
Berlin will never fall, as long as Kristian and Vera is around!!!
The Adventures of Vera and Christian , if anyone deserves 2 million subscribers it's these guys
😀🙏🙏💪🙋♀️
Fantastic job with the editing. Takes a lot of work on top of all the repairs. You always do tremendous on the editing. You always make me smile.
Thank you, very few viewers realize that.🙏🙏🤗🙋♀️
I bought a new FL1 Kalahari in 2005. The only thing that failed was the fuel pump at 12k miles. 43k in two years, then sold on. We now have three FL2's, The latest is a 2013 SD4 XS, 195k miles and still drives well, with a recent power transfer box for two hundred pounds. So, good and bad in any manufacturers ranges over time. We need people like Chris and Vera to keep the information up to date to keep aging vehicles mobile.
Yes, the fuel pump, oh boy, we refurbished two or three times. I dreaded the time when I smelled diesel again. 🙄😅But we always only replaced the many many tiny little O-Rings, which come in a kit. Never the fuel pump itself. 👍🙋♀️
Good morning Vera & Christian 😊 how appropriate an hour video as I sit in hospital waiting for my kidney stone and stent taken out 👍🏻 What a fantastic gesture fixing Vera’s LR for the farmer 🧑🌾 xx
Best of luck with that Daf!
No fun - kidney stone! My doctor said it was the same pain as childbirth with a gunshot wound...not sure how he knows this??
😳OMG, hope you are allright and get well soon again. 🙏🙋♀️
What a labour of love to help your neighbour.
Well done guys! Our Freelander did nearly 400k miles before its auto box died😭2.0 BMW diesel, so yes it was very reliable and a Land Rover!
However my 110 did nearly 800k miles and it was powered by a 300tdi so I guess all the desktop mechanics would say that’s down to Land Rover reliability issues!!! 🙄
Just started watching the video. My old Freelander is with my dad for some years. Bought it in 2009 with ca. 160k km, and now it's on 400k km. No engine issues except for 3 injectors, original turbo, 3 IRDs (including rebuild), 3 clutches, but original VCU and rear diff. Of course, all electric windows failed (the one which lasted the longest was the tailgate one), and many other niggles.
👍👌The tailgate window, we have done at least 3 or 4 times. And the fuelpump at least 2 times, and we bought it in 2010. Also the rear diff mount needed to be replaced every single year. 🙄😅👍🙋♀️
@Vera_and_Christian one fuel pump, one rear diff .mount, one front propshaft, one driveshaft, wheel bearing, several propshaft bearings, window switches. So yeh, most parts except body panels or engine parts. Timing chain is still original.
Fair play for sticking by it with some many issues. But its certainly racked up the miles(km)
“Get to the chopper”, it’s Christian and Vera x❤ from 🇬🇧
Really nice of you to help out the farmer and a change of content is always welcome 👍🏻👍🏻
Another great video! Anyone else hear the on/off high pitched sound throughout the video or am I loosing my mind 😂
it's the critter shreck. You are not able to hear it in person, but appearantly the camera picked up the sound and amplified it. 🤷♀️😌
@@Vera_and_Christian Adobe Audition could remove only that frequency from the audio track.
Well the critter Schreck is definitely working 😅
Yes. It was producing a really high pitched noise. RIP headphone users like me.
It really annoys me how they call those things "ultra-sonic". They're obviously not above sonic, as I can hear them!!!
Had to stop watching because of it. Ear piercing
Just endure until the battery is disconnected, then it's fine 😄
@@AJB1 they are above hearing, but I guess the camera has a higher range and maybe the video render does something to it. I guess it's a good way to test if it works 😅
Your farmer friend owes you big time!! Great videos.
9:19 - Vera sounds just like Marg Simpson! ❤️
I do hope your neighbour appreciates just what you’ve done for him!
I had a TD4 auto for 11 years before my D3. Mine was an auto and it was so reliable, the only roadside fault was a turbo hose which I fixed with some tape to limp it home. It did have the VCU replaced at 70,000 and then a few other bits and bobs, but really it was costing £300-400 a year to run and I’d paid it off years before. The interior was immaculate as well despite it being used as the family car, towing my Lotus to tracks and stuff around our land. I also wish I’d kept it, but my Disco3 is a worthy replacement.
🤗👍I also love my Disco 3 and don‘t want to go back🙋♀️
Your Farmer friend is a lucky guy! You guys are putting much work in to this vehicle, all with 100% perfection, as usual.
That Sonic Marten Repellent is really picked up by the camera 10- 11kHz I thought i was going nuts!
Great Video and amusing!
Yeah we don‘t hear it at all standing in front of it.🫣🙋♀️
Chritian's purchases made whilst relaxed on the couch are inspirational !
This is why I drive autos ... my TD4 Auto Freelander Mk1 was excellent but I did have to replace a front driveshaft in the snow on my drive at ground level. 😁... only major things that went wrong (as usual) were the centre prop supports and the VCU. A few niggles but was cheap & easy to fix. An underrated car if well maintained
You Sir are an absolute genius technician. Great to see your wife is also a great helping hand.
🤗🙏🙋♀️
Officially according to the independent Landrover garages near me the Freelander 2 is the most reliable Landrover ever built
I own a 2014 SD4 190bhp apart from regular maintenance and proper servicing replacement components it’s not cost me any more than anything else iv owned ,and it’s a car I intend to keep forever
They down side it is not ULEZ compliant, so bizarrely I can use my 4.2ltr V8 XK8 instead when I need to go into a City that has ULEZ zones 🤔🤔🤔🤔
I have the 2006 Auto, station wagon TD4, 201000 miles, been all over Europe now in Kosovo. Its a great workhorse, bit noisy compared to my BMW 320D B47 engine. I'm English but love Germany and its engineering.
Merry Christmas guys I enjoy your videos very much and I’m not insulted at all being a Toyota Rav 4 owner as you all make me appreciate what I don’t have to do . I hope you have a good new year.
Totally agree the td4 Freelander is the best and most reliable car LR ever made. I have a 2010 FL 2 with 180000 miles, have owned it for 6 years and am now about to spend the first serious money on it with a new PTO, about £800. Wort every penny. My son has a RR sport and put them side by side there is not much size difference, to me the FL is just a slightly smaller range rover. Loved this video and would like to see more on the Freelander. You are both fantastic entertainment and by far my favourite TH-cam channel. Love from Birmingham
Freelander 2/Evoque with the 2.2 diesel is a good runner up for most reliable engine. Do not really see any issues with those unless they have had neglected maintenance.
FL2 is very different to the FL1 though.
That's a lot of work for a clutch repair. Have the auto manufacturers got it all wrong. They have forgot the prime function, that is produce vehicles that simple functional and easy to maintain with reliabilit. The first manufacturer that bucks the trend and makes simple vehicles without all the bells ad whistles I believe will do well.. Great show guys.
Hey Christian when you’re hitting the hammer to loosen that part you look like the mighty Thor. Good morning Christian and Vera, thanks for brightening up this cold wet sunday morning
"Guten Morgen Christian und Vera, danke, dass ihr diesen kalten, nassen Sonntagmorgen erhellt habt." ❤❤❤
😀👍🙋♀️
Lot of work - kudos to you both for helping the neighbour.
😂😂😂 guys, you made my weekend! What a pleasure to see how easy you take everything apart and then back in. You’re great!!! I bet American cars are no fun at all. Too easy for you guys 😂😂😂 Vielen Dank, Christian und Vera, für all die Mühe, in diese Videos!! Wirklich toll! ❤❤
We had so many US cars, and yes they are too easy to fix. 😅👍👌🙋♀️
@ 😂😂
Watching you repair Land Rovers looks so much fun and I almost wish something would go wrong with my Evoque but nothing ever does. Thank goodness 😃
Thanks guys for another great video 👍. Just a obvesrvation...there is an extreme high pitched whine on the video mostly at the start...I thought my new laptop had gone wrong but noticed it appear every time the block heater light came on! It's most obvious that is what's causing it when at 2:13 it starts and then when you zoom into the block heater the volume of it rises and then disappears when the light on the heater goes out at 2:22! Weird! If you are older and have lost some high end hearing you may not hear it. Possible a whine from coil/inductor on the circuit board. It may only be RFI reacting with the camera and not be heard in real life, only on the video.
@@BikeLugger Its the "anti marten" device. It makes a high pitched squeal to keep them from chilling in your engine bay. You loose the ability to hear the high frequency with age, so they probably can't hear it IRL and in editing :D
Maybe you can imagine that all these comments are just as annoying to us as the noise is to you? We don’t hear it and we can’t change it. Vera even pointed at the thing in the video. Now I got all these comments pointing out the same darn thing. Maybe we need a brake from TH-cam and you guys watch some trail recon. Christian
I just watched a vid from Aussie Arvos in Melbourne about CO2 blasting the underside of the car. It is amazing and might be something you can do in Germany. Thanks for your efforts in this vid.
Cheers. 👍🏻🙏🦘
Thank you thank you thank you. Another smile on my face.
Lovely. They were well built back then, some real design innovations and solid engineering for the most part. I'm laughing at the land cruisers now, having some major engine bearing issues this year. All good fun.
An hour long episode 😊👏
Another brilliant video guys ,love the humour. This guy must be over the moon ,with the attention you have given for free to his car.
Another great Video and yes the Freelander TD4 was a great car, I had one for 4 years very little problem. Look forward to the next one.👍
A big bear hug to you both! So entertaining as I do not know goat dropping from olives about LandRovers.
Hope the farmer is giving you free milk and treats for a year and a goat for a happy Christmas !
Cheers and best regards!
😃🙏🙋♀️
Another great video guys! Christian looks light headed 🥴 sorry couldn’t resist, ie head torch)🔦 amazing work and love your your banter, Sunday wouldn’t be the same without you guys xx
Another great video, even that the Freelander is no longer yours you always go the extra mile to make sure important jobs are done
I love all Land Rover models , the good , the bad and the!!!! there are no ugly ones .😊
Yes, you are so right. 👍😀💪💪🙋♀️
BMW developed the Vortex Crankcase Breather whilst guess what Landrover stuck with the "Lifetime" filter. But the Beamer vortex upgrade fits so that's a winner.
Love your blog on the Freelander 1. A great car. I had one and now run a 2012 Freelander 2. Over here in the UK The Freelander 2 is now officially their best SUV. They are not without issues, but are easily sorted. 😅
There’s a BMW centrifugal part that replaces the filter in the oil separator. One went into my 2001 FL1 along with silicone air hoses when I bought the car.
I'm sure your neighbours appreciate your hard work as we do here in poor old England.
Another informative video. We are thinking of getting a Range Rover/Land Rover in the near future. Your videos are better than any manuals out there. Stay safe you two.
😀👌👍🙋♀️
Best selling Land Rover. 500000 sold.
Probably saved the brand. I loved mine. Now have the Freelander 2 which is even better 😊
I thought over 3 Million series and 90/110 were sold
The Freelander 1 was once the most sold SUV in Europe, till 2004. But I don't the excact numbers. 👍👌🙋♀️
It's probably the Evoque, could be over 1m units by now over both generations. Discovery Sport is over 600k, but LR seem to have lost interest in it for now even though it was their best selling model ever in a single 12 month period. Discovery across marks 1 to 4 shifted over 1m units too. Slightly scarily, if sales of new Defender keep increasing, it may surpass the DS in a single year for sales, and who knows on ultimate numbers. It's already over 350k sales which given the price range is quite astonishing.
At least 50% of American cars would never pass MOT inspection. I can’t believe all the work you have put into this Rover.
It‘s a work of love😅🤗🙋♀️
The crankcase breather with the nasty foam filter inside was replaced by a newer design which didn't need replacing/cleaning. There's also a tiny little filter down by the turbo which everyone forgets about. Sadly, it's unlikely that either of these two items will fix the egr fault. I know of at least 2 Freelanders and an MG ZT which had the TD4 engine which ran with a small ball bearing in the vacuum hose (so the ecu thought the valve was being opened) and no fault code was generated.
We found the fault, it was awesome and unbelievable. Video will be up soon. 👍😅🙋♀️
Brilliant channel guy's. Fantastic interaction between you both. Great to see that repairs are done properly.
🤗🙏🙋♀️
Thanks guys, another first class video, I wish you were my neighbours, i didn’t realise how involved this repair would be.
Freelander 1 with BMW engine one of the best cars Land Rover ever made. If you're looking for a battery impact wrench check out DeWalt dcf899 or 900 I've had Ingersoll rand and Milwaukee both good but both didn't last as long as the cheaper DeWalt only problem with the DeWalt was the anvil broke but Chinese replacement was only £14.50 original lasted 6 years Chinese lasted a year priced genuine over £50 so just bought 2 Chinese as machine is now 8 years old and might die soon Ingersoll Rand only lasted 5 years and motor and switch went. Love your videos,
Really enjoyed this one!
Thank you very much!
1:23 My favourite bit!
You guys should have a TV show such a good pair. Who says Germans don't have a sense of humour!
Thanks for another excellent video. I hope the farmer helps you out from time to time.
Love the Land Rover with all of the little quirks. I do really enjoy your videos Vera and Christian (especially the humour - many chuckles each weekend). I will be going back to the Philippines in January but rest assured I will continue to watch every Sunday just as before
😀👍🙋♀️
I agree about the Freelander TD4 but let me add the 1800 my wifes is 26years old and she has had it 24 years thanks you for the video
You are a top notch mechanic, very talented, hard working, lov your videos, all the best from Ireland
🤗🙏🙋♀️
Great video guys. Looking forward to the next video. Enjoyed watching. 👍🏼👍🏼
Wow. This looked like a massive job. Great team work as always. No wonder it was an hour long video. You looked like you were working harder on this car than you do on your own. So much kudos to you. Also rather happy i am planning on changing my clutch on my bmw E90 rather than my L320, hoping its a lot easier than this looked.
Clutch on a Discovery 3 is a piece of cake. It‘s those transversly installed engines which are a nightmare. Like on our B-Class we did a couple of weeks ago.🫣😅🙋♀️
Superb video once again.❤
No, Christian. You are not forgetting anything, How could you, Vera, the quality control is checking everything. Lol. Job well done.
A herculean effort from both of you! I should think you almost spent 5 days just editing! Rowing machine vs gravel bike🤔 when i ride with my mates on gravel bikes riding down some stoney stuff they always look really tense, like there about to fall off😢 im in the back ground on my mtb casually riding one handed looking at the view !! Ps I spotted one of your fans coming back from the tip in my very boring reliable 12 yr old audi a6. " its a discovery, check, it has wheel spacers, check, super dooper roof rack system, check, snorkel on backwards, check, LR TIME sticker on front wing, check."It made my day you guys are actually real 😂❤
Divorse is near Vera he has started to tell you NOT to talk.😂😂😂
glad you doing this freelander - i am just starting working on the rocker arm
This video popped up and it looked interesting, I have never even owned a Landrover, though I have owned three Hilux Surfs (much easier to work on), and had to totally renovate the last one. You two made the whole infuriating job a pleasure to watch, and despite the humour I could see that you were doing everything properly. Excellent entertainment.
Great video, absolutetly loved my Freelander2!!
That high pitched critter deterrent had me pause the video a few times to figure out why my computer was making a loud high pitched sound haha.
We had 2001 FL1 Td4 with the Jatco JF506E had around 471 000km on it. Was great little car and had a great traction control
Very cool 👍
Good work !! Bmw M47 engine is bulletproof ! good idea is to clean the MAF sensor , edc15 injection is verry sensitive
Yay: Hippo (Freelander 1) content! 😁
Absolutely brillant.that was some amount of work on your neighbour's landrover.i hope it passes the tuf now😊😊😊😊
Happy sky and happy tree. Bob Ross good memories.
Great job you two! That was a great deal of work for you both. I didn't realise it took so long to do the videos, 15-20 hours is a long time every week. So thanks for all the videos you've produced over the years Christian and Vera. My best friend nearly thirty years ago was one of Metaflux's UK sales guys, when Metaflux was totally unknown in the UK back then. I got from him some of that grey paste and I had it for years in a small tin. It didn't come with a brush then. Also I got some silicone sealant that would actually cure off underwater. Now that stuff was really impressive 30 years ago. You farmer friend is a lucky guy to get his Freelander fixed for nothing, I hope he paid for the parts! And Vera, the " Transfer" case is called the "intermediate reduction drive" for a reason. It's not a straight splitting the drive to the rear axle, it actually changes the ratio of the drive ever so slightly to something like 0.97 :1. This makes the rear wheels drive at a slightly different speed from the front. And if you had that car for ten years and didn't have to replace it, you are very lucky. In fact you could have had to do that two or even three times in that ten years they were so unreliable and broke often. When they brought out the Freelander2 they got rid of that entirely!
It's great to see the Freelander again. I'm amazed that you can still get parts for it. I think we'd all love for the two of you to repair our cars. I think that LR should make a new Freelander.
They did it’s called the evouge
@philipmadhatter4006 Evoque 😀
Cracking episode...some serious work involved
Excellent content as usual, really enjoyed the video, thank you.
Chris, you are so lucky,to have such a gifted wife, love your videos.Michael , Ireland
We appreciate the vids you guys do for us land rover owners,
😀🙏🙋♀️
In time all the neighbours are going to be land rover owners and the district mechanic 🧰 are you both,,☘️☘️☘️☘️⚙️a great job 👍 helping the community 🙂🙂😺 from northern Ireland
You are both special people
My friend had a Freelander, a specially modified from LR version of it, in fact. We went off roading to a slot of different places. I am quite sure I spent at least half the time pulling him over obstacles with my Jeep. But.. Amazingly, that Freeland never once broke down. Sure, it had the ground clearance of an F1 car, but at least it was pretty reliable.
Excellent viewing as always 👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you and your neighbors for the videos👍🏻
I Love the Freelanders. I have a L2 TD4 and 10 years no drama.
You are good people. Well done
😀🙏🙋♀️
I had one of these, cost me a fortune in constant repairs and eventually blew the engine (big end failure). Still, with all its faults it was one of the most enjoyable cars I’ve ever owned.
PS Bleeding that clutch reminds me of how often I had to bleed mine, at least every few weeks and definitely a weak point of the TD4 Freelander Mk1
Love your Sunday morning videos, very funny. You are a Genius. as a 20 year old land cruiser driver, I like the look of Range rover and sport, but not brave enough to try one. 🙂.
Good for you. Most 20 year olds cannot afford a Land Cruiser here in Germany. 😀👍🙋♀️
I am on many farms every day as a milk tanker driver and I see a lot of farm vehicles this one is in good shape compared to many of the ones I see 😂👍
Great video , always makes my Sunday morning getting my fix of LR TIME. I think you need to get another Freelander as a prroject for one of you sons to use. As for the longer vidoe duration I think it works, but of course it reduces the time for more detailed explanations. Keep up the great work. 😀
