The Cheapest Computer for Your Hauptwerk Organ! Budget Macs and my Experience

  • This video is something of a guide to getting yourself an affordable, perfectly functional Mac computer to run Hauptwerk 7 (and older versions). It details what computer models to look for, and the upgrades you will need.
    In summary, if you buy a Mac from 2009-2014, it will be highly upgradable and repairable, inexpensive, and can handle Hauptwerk perfectly. It is very easy to set up too - I've used 4 different Macs from this era, and all have run Hauptwerk flawlessly - even laptops.
    Please ask any additional questions in the comments, as I could hardly cover everything in this video. I'll do my best to respond!

    Thank you, Titus, for this interesting presentation demonstrating how you can have a decent 'virtual' organ using Hauptwerk at quite a reasonable set-up cost. I personally am frustrated with many newer sample sets that are designed, say, for 8 channel surround sound and, with tremulant recorded ranks, can demand over 100 GB RAM to run as envisaged! Yes, you can always optimise for the system you are using, but it would seem that the companies making sample sets just assume for this niche market that users have a limitless budget for computer hardware to get the best listening experience with speakers and and sound card/amplifier to turn a living room into a cathedral or concert hall! You rightly point out that a practice instrument is achievable without breaking the bank . . . but if you want to go as far as Hauptwerk can let you go . . . a lottery win would certainly help! 🤣

      Well said Graham! As I said in the video, most people who aren’t audiophiles in a giant cathedral will never notice the difference between 2 channels and 8, and sampled Tremulants vs a virtual effect.

      This is a very curious thing. While the realism is great if you can fully load a sample, the ram requirements are becoming truly extreme. My recent upgrade was to an older pre-m series iMac that could take 96gb of ram. I felt I “needed” that much to be able to load a few of my sample sets fully and still have wiggle room. I used to have 32gb ram and always felt that it was limiting. Some of the sample sets can still take over 40gb for only one or two perspectives 20bit 😮.

      And if I had a fortune for all of that processing power, I'd have the pipes built instead!

    Fantastic video, Titus! It is easy to become lost in the excesses of modern computers and samplesets, but the whole philosophy of Hauptwerk has been to increase access to these wonderful instruments. I myself started out on an extreme budget. Hauptwerk is now 20 years old, and in the original description, Martin Dyde wrote, "Hauptwerk has been designed to take advantage of the high processing power and relatively low cost of computer memory to give a far more accurate rendition of an organ than is possible on most keyboards, synthesizers or samplers" -> considering that we can now buy older computers which were cutting edge just a few years ago - it's a Hauptwerk dream!

    Very good tutorial. 👍
    Have never been an Apple person myself and, from what you say about M series, I'll definitely be sticking to Wintel platforms.

    Thanks for the useful information young man. I've just managed to pick up a macbook pro running 10.13 with 16GB for peanuts ( $120) which is on its way .I remember when Hauptwerk came out and the cost of a mac was very expensive. The audio when you played a few notes from the macbook sounded crystal clear so no extra usb soundcard needed ?? Anyway ,thanks again .

      Hope it works out for you! I am running a USB soundcard actually, it's hidden behind the organ. But I'm no audio expert.

    Hi thank you for such an interesting video - I learnt a lot from it. I have bought a pc just for Hauptwerk - I have the V6 perpetual - do you know of any resources which go through how to instal Hauptwerk on my new computer? Sorry it just seems very complex! Thank you for such great content.

    Thank you for your wonderful video! Do you know where I could find some information on how to get rid of crackling on the audio? Thank you again.

    • @peporgan
      @peporgan  ปีที่แล้ว

      Crackling usually means the db is set too high on that particular organ. I'm not at my organ at the moment but I think the setting can be adjusted in an audio floating panel.

      Thank you for your response. I will play around with this in the floating menu to see if I can get this issue fixed. Thank you again :)

    Can Hauptwerk run on other setup and OSs, e.g. Linux or Win?

    Let’s try hauptwerk on a 28 cores macpro with 1.5 terabytes of ram 😅😅

      @peporgan  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That would be fun! But I wonder what organ would need such memory - Boardwalk Auditorium?

  • @KevingerAdr
    @KevingerAdr ปีที่แล้ว

    Very good video! I wonder if the RAM is the most important issue deciding if your laptop can run hauptwerk.

    • @peporgan
      @peporgan  ปีที่แล้ว

      As I say, you can reduce ram requirements on sample sets. But yes, ram is probably most important; any CPU today should be fine. Also using an SSD will drastically improve loading times.

    • @KevingerAdr
      @KevingerAdr ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Titus! My laptop is Windows, with 32+512GB ram. But still results a 0.5s loading time...
      Is that reasonable?

    Wondering if there’s anyone who has a list of specific components necessary to build a decent Hauptwerk organ. Manuals, pedalboard, computer, - better yet I wish someone would be selling a nice prebuilt set-up, or put one together for me…. I’m just not computer literate - but I’d love a practice organ with the great sound options. You do make it sound relatively easy, but for me, buying pre-assembled set-up makes the most sense. Thanks for all the information on computer requirements…👍

    • @peporgan

      My organ was pre-built! The computer part is just the last step.
