    An old school way to check for valve to piston clearance is to use play-dough on the surface of the piston, rotate the assembly and take the head back off to check clearances. If it's close enough...say .050, you'll want to relieve the piston where the valves can contact in case you wind up with valve float, which you shouldn't with the high tension springs. This video was an excellent teaching video. Thanks for posting this Willy!! Looking forward to the first run video where you explain bedding in the rings and break in procedure. Cheers my Friend! Zip~

      I hadn't thought of that only know you want to run up and down threw RPMS for a wile before a few WOT no load haven't looked into much just heard about beading in rings and cam.
      I've heard about cylinder glazing like assembly lube on piston rings, no other horror stories or why not to do quotes with explanations.

    Hey buddy. I picked up a couple 35hp vanguards for parts, they had thrown a rod and took a chunk out of the cylinder wall and it looks exactly like where you clearanced the rod caps.....if there is a way I can send you a photo and see what you think maybe the two 35hp big blocks are salvageable!!!

    • @willyck948
      @willyck948  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hard to tell from photos as to what is tolerable as I haven't worked on a 35hp myself.
      An engine shop would be a better place to have it checked out otherwise you can buy a block online cheaper than a replacement engine.
      Partstree is a good place to start if you need parts.

      That's what I'm thinking just buying a couple bare blocks.

    I know this is a old video but do you know if the starter gear is plastic or metal and how many teeth?

    • @willyck948
      @willyck948  ปีที่แล้ว

      it verses depending on the manufacturer date best to go by the engine model type and code to get the correct part numbers.
      I also tend to buy complete bindics assemblies as the aftermarket gears don't always fit and work perfectly on oem splines
      Partstree is a good place to look

    Hello. I'm from Belarus. I got in trouble. My Briggs And Stratton 23 HP engine broke. the camshaft broke ... The problem is to find a spare part. Can I install a camshaft from a Briggs And Stratton 14-16-18 HP engine? Perhaps these parts are the same? I need wise advice... Thank you.

      You can search you engine model type and code to get a part number and search for used one online.
      I'm not sure if cams from an 18 horsepower would fit into a 23 horsepower
      The 14 horsepower threw 18 horsepower cams are the same though.

    The head in the block as

    • @willyck948
      @willyck948  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not exactly sure what you mean but the head and block are as cast no porting on the heads just clearanced the block for longer rods and extra cam lift.

  • @radinzach2236
    @radinzach2236 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What lift of cam did you use?

    • @willyck948
      @willyck948  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Too many variables like stock or poted heads, valve springs, what RPMS are you going for, is there any rules regulating max valve lift.
      Best to give PRECISION CAMS a call.

      Willy Ck okay thank you, I’m wanting to do a slight engine build like rods and a high rev kit, but I’ve always wanted to put a big cam in one of these

      Mid West Super Cub has good performance crank trigger ignition you can probably adapt to a vanguard.

    Atmosphere Pressure is 14.7 set by NASA, so your 175psi / 14.7 = 11.9cr!

    • @willyck948
      @willyck948  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I found an error in the logic turns out engines running 9.8:1 compression run 150 psi and 11:1 compression gets up to 170s psi pressure goes up exponentially with the increase in heat comes more compression. Smaller area and more heat way more pressure
