- Have you ever passed along Highway 16 in Ohio and wondered what's up with the giant Picinic basket? Well, before I take you inside to explore, I think it's crucial you know the back story first. A seven-story architectural marvel that's shaped like a giant picnic basket!"
"The story of the Basket Building begins with a man named Dave Longaberger. In the 1970s, Dave founded the Longaberger Basket Company, a business that would become famous for its high-quality, hand-woven baskets. Dave's vision wasn't just about creating great products; he wanted everything associated with his brand to reflect his love for baskets, including the company's headquarters."
"In 1997, Dave's dream became a reality when the Longaberger Basket Building was completed in Newark, Ohio. This 180,000-square-foot structure wasn't just designed to look like any basket-it was modeled after the company's best-selling product, the Medium Market Basket. From its towering handles to its woven façade, every detail was meticulously crafted to make this building an iconic symbol of the Longaberger brand.".
One of the most striking features of the building is its handles, each weighing nearly 150 tons and designed to withstand harsh weather conditions. These handles are heated to prevent ice from forming during the winter, ensuring the safety of everyone inside."
"Inside, the Basket Building is just as impressive. The atrium, bathed in natural light, creates a warm and welcoming environment for employees and visitors alike. The offices and meeting rooms are thoughtfully designed to promote creativity and collaboration, reflecting the company's commitment to quality and innovation."
"Today, the Longaberger Basket Building is still abandoned and doors are locked and alarmed but continues to be a point of pride for Ohio. Though the Longaberger Company has faced challenges over the years, the building remains a symbol of creativity and determination. In recent years, efforts have been made to preserve this architectural gem, but everything is on standby. For now, it just attracts tourists who are rolling by Highway 16.

Yeah, not an Easter Basket.
Wouldn’t in a million years dumba$$. You sneaking sound acting like a child. How about learning about this multi-billion dollar business that Dave Longaberger founded. Omg, like how old are you? 13?
It’s amazing to see the inside again after all these years. I worked in the basket for 8 years for the company for 12. It was a local staple that employed around 80% of near by towns. My aunt was one of the first 50 employees hired by Dave (know as the Founders Club) Coolest part of the video for me was seeing my OWN desk still there in the IT department. Tami Longaberger single handedly crushed a once billion dollar company.
I worked there too in 2006. I was a temp they contracted to enter orders in for the monthly sales quotas.
I am from Zanesville, I worked for a short time occasionally in Dresden.
@@Utmanders Isn't it crazy how a company that had more orders then their entire order entry department could handle and had to contract people to come in and help has now been closed for over a decade?
@@robertpollock8617 I'm guessing a ton of people from Zanesville and most of Dresden worked there at some point over its history. Longaberger was a staple for those communities for decades. It was sad to see it go.
@@brimstonefootsteps4332 thank the mismanagement of the company by the daughter and the housing market crash. It is very sad that a whole town is gone and so many people were out of jobs.
They should make the building a tribute to Dave Longaberger and have it as a museum.
And they could sell baskets in the gift shop
@@richard-leeriley8583 amen
Thank you for this video. I was an independent Longaberger Sales Consultant in the late 1990's-2000's. We were all so proud of this company, Dave Longaberger's story and the handcrafted products made by the craftsmen in Ohio. I attended one of the consultant "Basket Bees" in 1999 and toured the Homestead complex. I loved the original pottery and the baskets, thinking they were a good investment as a collectible. Unfortunately, there were too many made and the baskets have little value today when compared to their original cost. It is really a shame that Tami & Rachel Longaberger did not have the same vision as their father. When they started having products made in China (pottery), the end was in sight. The daughters made their money, mismanaged the company and ran the business into bankruptcy and obscurity. Thank you for the look inside the building, but the whispering and sneaking around during the video coverage was a little corny. Either you had proper permission to be there and film, or you broke in like a common vandal.
looks like he did not have permission...was definitely sneaking around
Well - finally this buckeye knows why the company didn't survive. Sad to know what happened. Dad knew how to keep things going forward, kids didn't have a clue. Heard of a lot of company's dying this way
@@andreadeamon6419 Yes, including Fenton Art in Willamstown, WV. Just across the river from Marietta, OH. Same thing...children got hold of it. Fenton Art was also a gem. Tour buses came, people there hand painted their glass. Beautiful things came from Fenton Art. Was a big deal in our area. So sad.
My wife was a rep. She has been there a few times.
Most TH-cam creators state they were given permission to explore a building. I couldn’t finish watching because it felt to violating.
I remember taking chartered buses from Marietta, Ohio with my sisters, my mom and friends up to Dresden to visit the wonderful Longaberger facilities. Those were such fun days and we enjoyed the day immensely. The sales consultant that went with us on the chartered buses made it so fun. We always received a small basket (included in the ticket price), and we played games on the way to and from Longaberger that gave us an additional way to win other Longaberger items. Everyone always looked forward to these trips to Dresden. We drove by this beautiful corporate office one time while on one of the chartered trips and i remember the consultant saying that there were quite a few wrecks happening around the basket area due to people looking at this unique corporate office. I can certainly believe that there were wrecks. This basket was absolutely fantastic to see. The Longaberger factory was huge and there were so many people creating these beautiful baskets. I remember the huge TV's and all the strips of wood piled by these workers to create the baskets that we loved and wanted. It was a class A place. Nothing was out of place, there were so many places to take great pictures. The flowers and baskets at the back of the property were just beautiful. So sad to see what has happened to this company. I remember the days when everyone wanted each and every one of the baskets created. I have several of these baskets and just love them. In the future, these will be passed down to my children to love also.
That sounds like so much fun.
@@beehappyalways Oh, it was so much fun! A bunch of women on buses so excited to go to one of our most favorite places. The Longaberger consultants were the best and you could tell that they had so much pride in representing such a quality company. They really rolled out the red carpet. I am so glad that we all got to experience this wonderful time. We all will never forget the Longaberger company as long as we live. :)
Yes the bus trips were fantastic, our bus left from Cassopolis Michigan.
I remember those days too! 😢
This is in my hometown,my daughter worked there. Longabergers daughter ruined everything he worked his whole life for. Dave was an incredible human being,he never forgot his roots and was always kind to everyone. He owned a restaurant called Popeyes ( not the chain) and he actually waited tables there well after becoming a millionaire and would sit and talk to patrons. he turned $1000 he borrowed from him his wife and built and empire. He always wanted a mansion on the hill to overlook the community he loved,I was so happy he got to do that. R I p Dave, you are missed
Very thoughtful words.
It's sad but true the children of millionaire's have no interest in the company or companies their parents built, and so it goes the offspring many times ruins the company
I live in newark ! This building isn't even 15 away from me
Wow, thank you for the information. I was there many years ago and took a tour. Loved it. God Bless.
They should do basket classes here and other entrepreneur classes.
I really hope the building is eventually used again. I’m from Ohio and have probably over 40 Longaberger baskets and some pottery. We would take a trip to the Homestead every year around Christmas. Lots of great memories. I’ve never seen the inside of the office building so thanks for sharing.
These baskets were a mainstay in the 90s. I’m glad the brand rebooted and is making baskets in the US but they need to eventually get this building back to truly seal the deal.
That would be cool!
yeo, you are correct!
I thought a company bought it from Longenberger 5 or 6 years ago? This is sad its empty.
I've had some of the best times of my life around Longaberger Baskets. I lived in Newark, sold baskets, bought baskets traveled 2 Homestead 4 many events...Dresden too. I remember waiting 3hrs on Rte 161 to go to the Barn Raising 2 get a limited edition basket.
The company was fleeced by a corporate raider brought in 2 help the family when it was struggling during the economy. He took control & stole the money instead of paying the suppliers bills. He tanked other companies the same way. It's a sad story and hurt the whole community.
I hope that this building could be rehabbed & turned into Senior Apartment living.
I worked in that building for 7 years. Still as beautiful as ever. So sad to see it empty 😢 (it’s a market basket)
Could be made into an Unique Apartment Complex
Well, welcome back!
sure.
its a MARKET BASKET! Nota friggin Easter basket!
Thank you! I kept yelling that the whole time I was watching it😂😂😂
Its whatever a person says it is .Personally it needs torn down.
I know right , if you’re going to do a story get the facts straight.
I did also. Having lived in newark for several years, all the locals know its a picnic/market basket. NOT A EASTER BASKET!
@@paulbaker5085 do you have any idea what it would cost to demo this building???
Tammy and Bernie Kosar were married Bernie was the quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. Tammy would Book the buses to her mansion then have lunch with the passengers. When her father died she inherited everything. Not even having the business a year she outsourced the basket making and outsourced the mfg of the baskets and closed it all down.
Before that she sold the little retro restaurant.
So yeah IMO she was the downfall to everything her dad worked so hard to create for the family and community.
All the daughters were thinking about was money and their Dad's fortune he worked so hard for. They should have continued to run Longaberger in their Dad's legacy with the same ethics as him, but no they had to ruin it
Tami was never married to Bernie Kosar, they dated from 2009-2013
Yep yes ran it into the ground. 😔
@@TADDs101yep just dated. My uncle worked at Barnes and noble and during 1 of her book signings he had Bernie sign something for me and he wrote a personalized note.
Amazing . I bought longaberger baskets in the 90s and still have them
More like a Giant pic-a-nick basket, boo boo! Yogi would be proud!
hahahah!
But that is exactly what it was modeled after a giant picnic basket.
@@RangerRickTV learn some English .
Great to see the inside. It’s amazing to see how incredibly nice it is inside. Must’ve been a great place to work. Years ago, my friend was performing in the center of town. I asked some folks how close the Longaberger building was to the theater. They said I had to go see it. I could do it before anyone even noticed I was away. It was a 5 - 10 minute drive out and back. So glad I made that drive. Very Friendly folks in that part of the world.
This place was not built to be specially an Easter basket lol it’s a simple basket. My mother in law has passed down probably $15,000 or more worth of these unique expensive baskets and so many other items this brand made and I love it all so much. She has went to this place many times from Kentucky to Ohio buying baskets that could on,y be bought there in person at the store and not on their website. Baskets never go out of style. I have these baskets all through my home, all thanks to my amazing mama in law who was gracious enough to pass her complete collection down to me. They are beautiful and I will cherish them always. Thank you for sharing this with us and I am now going to share this video with my mother in law.
The narrator flat out says it was modeled after the best selling market basket.
You can put your weed in the baskets😵💫
It’s a Market Basket lol. Dave’s favorite!
@@shakascloset1700you’re stupid!
This place is amazing and beautiful. I hope they don’t let it go bad in the sense of destruction of it. It make a beautiful hotel & restaurant and maybe a small theater. Put this grand old lady too use while she’s still in good shape
Very nice, I’m from this area I actually live about 20 minutes from the basket. Kinda not cool you keep calling it an Easter basket because, these baskets were more than that. I remember my aunts having this insane collection. However, my mom knew Dave L. Personally, really neat guy. I don’t know if this was just her being a mom, so this was something that she told me after she met Dave because she ran a support group at the time. He told her that he struggled with dyslexia and some learning difficulties in school but that didn’t stop him. He followed what he loved and made an iconic brand and became somewhat of a local legend. He shared his story about his dyslexia with her because I also have dyslexia and told her to tell me that I shouldn’t give up either. I went to the factory on a school trip around 1995 when I was in the 6th grade and got to see the dedication of the basket weavers first had. Our community It really meant something to a lot of people. I think we should find a way to use the basket for another purpose like apartments or something like that. So maybe this video will give someone an idea. Thanks for sharing this though.
My father-in-law designed the handles on this basket. Didn't build them just designed them
Oh how cool!
My uncle was a crane operator who lifted them into place.
My uncle is my mom's brother. He had nothing to do with this project.
@@jvon3885 funny
My cousins 3rd husband's boy Tommy was in charge or keeping the handles clean
There were four women that convinced Dave to start making baskets with his father's basket molds. He had a few of the baskets in his grocery in Dresden and the women were sure the baskets would be big sellers. The women developed the home presentation plan and the rest is history.
I drove Charter Bus for 35 years, I Loved going to Dresden and to Longaberger, Dave’s daughter Tammy is the one that ruined it, her and Bernie Kosar the ex NFL quarterback.
That’s so disheartening
wow thank you I didn't realize that.
I visited there many many years ago and went to downtown Dresden.. Everyone knew the Longaberger name! I even became an independent seller.. Those were fun times and I will always cherish the fond memories. It’s so sad that the daughters ran it into bankruptcy 😢
I visited this basket building years ago. It's so sad to see it abandoned!! It's an amazing piece of architecture.
Living in Newark, this is a sad story. Daves daughter I think her name was Tammy in the building into the red by building a big giant compound on creamery Road outside of Zanesville. receivership couldn’t save it. Sad. The baskets were top of the line.
This building should be sold and preserved it's in perfect condition
I have a longaberger basket on my kitchen table with napkins in it. It's at least 20 yrs old. It was my mother inlaws and she left it to me. She collected them.😊
My brother was a weaver for Longaberger. Owned a house on Main St in Dresden. Many good memories.
It is sad to see it abandoned. Two other iconic basket companies that had been around for almost 200 years, Peterborough Basket in Peterborough, NH and West Rindge Basket in West Rindge, NH also went under in the last decade or so. The materials needed to build them became scarce and demand for quality baskets declined. So sad. My sister worked at the Peterborough company for years.
What a beautiful building. It doesn't look abandoned, just vacant. I hope it can be repurposed.
That would make a beautiful hotel. Wonderful place to visit (even with the scary kids).
exactly my point too!
Its the middle of nowhere. IT is the attraction, I suppose.
It was actually planned to become a hotel but then Covid happened and they fell through. It’s not in the middle of nowhere.
Newark is 5 mins away, I wouldn’t say it’s the middle of nowhere.
Longaberger Baskets were huge in the 90s. But the business was an MLM, so that meant the product was expensive. I personally couldn't afford them at the time. But they were nice baskets. Too bad the building is empty.
I hope you alerted authorities anonymously that the basket isn't secured. I'd hate to see vandals set the place on fire or trash it.
I have many many Longarberger baskets. I also loved to see the new baskets each year. Such a loss.
Best place I've ever worked! Dave was a super nice man and really cared for his employees. He gave a lot of the baskets to his employees. I worked in woodcrafts. We made the curio cabinets and the memory chests. My sister worked in this building. She took care of the many consultants. At its peck, there were over 10,000 employees ❤❤
❤️Love the LONGABERGER BASKETS….I purchased a lot of them and enjoy using all of them
I worked for David for sixteen years . I work at the heartville plant . We process all the wood for all the baskets. Tammie closed our plant first after , five years after David died. It’s so sad to see it now. When the building was first build he pay for us at the heartville plant to be bus down there . And they took pictures of all the worker in front of the basket building. I still have the picture to this day.
Being true to its exterior, it really needs a farm to table restaurant. Too cheesy? Probably. But I’d go.
I love this video! I live in Ohio. Passing this building a few times. I always wondered how it looked inside. Now i do! Thank you!! ❤
It's such a shame it is now empty. Hopefully, someday, it will be occupied again. Beautiful place.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I still have my large Longaberger handbag! I love to carry it occasionally and it always gets noticed when I am out and about!!!! So sorry the company was ran into the ground!!! Hey, turning the building into a hotel might not be a bad idea 😊. Deb in Ohio
Bring it back to life-why not bring it back exactly as it was -a basket factory. Smaller cakes maybe to start off but it could be a multipurpose building - it is huge! Basket factory with tours, some floors for apartments, small cafe and gift shop downstairs on Lobby floor. This building is so beautiful-I would love to see it in real life. Don't let it turn into a mold pit, or worse-be torn down. Bring it back to life!
Thank you for bringing this video to people that otherwise would not see the inside. This was interesting and entertaining. It's just a shame the company went under.
I'm from Ohio and have been by this building many times and have always wondered what the inside looked like. Thank you for the tour
Glad it was helpful!
Longaberger baskets were so popular back in the 1990’s. I still have the recipe basket I received as a wedding gift 💕
My mom collected Longaberger baskets. I sent this video to her. Cool video!
Welcome to my hometown of Newark, OH! It's beautiful inside the basket - the outside needs some work. The basket is making its way through bankruptcy court right now - thanks to the Longaberger daughters running the company into the ground and then selling out. We are hoping that with Intel building it will bring an investor to turn it into a hotel.
I agree. The daughters thought the fad would last forever and it did not. I use my baskets. I have their dishes that are pretty and durable. Sorry they couldn’t change with the times. A hotel would be a great idea!
How many times did ole Dave go Bankrupt.
@@paulbaker5085 None - He alluded to a string of near-bankruptcies, IRS threats to shut him down, periodic labor unrest and frequent layoffs.
I sit in the parking lot and eat my lunch sometimes 😂
Lol nice
Hi Rick! I use to have party’s and buy it! Thank you for taking us through the building. I still have and use their pottery and I love it! Have a great day ❤
I'm glad you enjoyed the tour!
I remember finally saving up enough money for a Market Basket and the business was closed. Passed by this place several times with my truck driver Uncle. I was so sad when tjey was closed. Beautiful baskets and beautiful building.
Amazing to see this building on the inside.
Wish they make into something that Dave Longaberger be proud of
I live right over the hill. Terry Thompson flew his airplane through the handles
I heard it cost him his pilot license, is that true?
@@lylaclare88pilots are not allowed to fly within 500ft of persons or structures unless necessary for takeoff or landing. With obtaining a waiver before doing such a stunt the FAA would very likely, at a minimum, suspend the pilots certificate for a period of time. The FAA can be harsh for intentional violations.
It’s a shame that Dave’s daughters destroyed what their father built. Children don’t always carry on their parent’s legacy.
I was there when they were in business. Fascinating place. Great baskets.
It would be neat turned into apartments. Like I watched an old mall turned into apartments on the top floors and little shops opened in the bottom floor. It was really cool!
I live in Ohio and went to see this building once many years ago. My college was located fairly close by. Excited to finally see what the inside looks like.
The multi story Christmas tree and all the other decorations in the atrium were beautiful! My late wife was a Sales Consultant and we conducted bus tours from Dayton with her wonderful customers.
That is one cool looking building to be in the form of a basket hopefully it will be kept in great shape
I'm sure it will be.
@@RangerRickTV cool beans 🫘 that you got to explore it Rick 😁😎
So sad that after the founder of the company in Many cases dies, the company gets mismanaged and closes. Hope this building can be used again while remaining it's iconic self. I remember seeing a TV show about the different, weird and downright unusual buildings around the country and this one was shown on the program back when the business was still going strong.
I spent 18 months planting all the trees and shrubs on that 50 acres,
You did a wonderful job!
Fascinating. I like the added historical footage.
Thank you.
This brought back such grest memories! I took a bus tour ftom NJ to Ohio way back in their hay day. What a great trip. I toured the factory and we went to Dresden where there were neat little stores and placs to eat. My cousins daughter had a little shop there for a few years. 0:14
Why not make it a mixed use building bring back employment to the locals? Ground floor a farmers market & grocery. Some of the floor hand made goods and small businesses. A restaurant, a few floors of residential housing for employees of the building. Helps everyone and saves the landmark.
I love that idea.
💯💯💯
We have something like that being built already

It is the Longaberger office building. It is gorgeous! I've been there several times! It was breathe taking at Christmas!
That place is beautiful
I have a few Longaberger baskets. They were expensive, but very high quality. They will be family heirlooms passed down for endless generations. They are built that well. That building is amazing. Hope they never tear it down.
Beenie babies
People get bored and move on to the next thing or take a break during economic downturns like currently with inflation
Amazing building it’s hard to believe they built it perfectly nothing is out of per portion
If you had permission to explore why were you whispering? That building is not spooky at all. I really hope someone can buy it. It would be a shàme to let it fall into disrepair. So many time bank owned building are allowed to sit empty and deteriorate until worthless. It's so stupid.
Yes, it’s funny that you are whispering but your boots/ shoes are making loud noises on the floors. I own the picnic basket which I purchased at a Longaberger party in my neighborhood years ago. It is very sturdy and looks brand new. We still use it to cart food around. It was expensive at the time.

I worked at a few shops in Dresden for over 10 years. When Dave was still alive he would come into the shops to say hello to all of us.
I have a picture somewhere of some of the employees standing in front of the building. My daughter lives across the street from the basket (market not picnic) ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I also worked in the basket (as everyone used to call it). Each bathroom per floor, had a different theme. Different baskets in each as well. 😢
Thank you! 💜🧺💜🧺💜
Excellent excellent video. I remember going to that building on a tour when my sister was there from California at the basket B. That company was booming unfortunately one of his daughters destroyed it and she destroyed it quickly. I hope she has to drive by today and see what she did, so sad. The people that sold those baskets through parties were some of the most energetic and happy people doing what they love to do when you destroy incentive you destroy everything.
I have a picture with my mom and 2 sisters on the staircase. My mom worked for Longaberger as a sales consultant for over 30 years. She retired right before they went under.
Omg that's crazy 😎
dang man, you walked right past all the IT server equipment I wanted to see that stuff, I love seeing that commercial stuff from the 90's .. and to think Amazon was just a single page html website back then, and only about an 1/8 of the population had a PC in the home
When we were stationed at Ft. Knox one of the wives groups took a bus to visit Dresden. I remember passing the basket. we had a great couple of days and toured the factory and spent time in town spending money.
I Drove by this Building Basket many many times
looks cool doesn't it?
We drove down on a day trip from Orrville, toured the Longenberger facility, ate the nest pulled pork sandwich in the restaurant but surprisingly we could not find the office basket builDing. I was so disappointed! Wonder if it could be converted into apartments?
I was saddened to see the company closed. I've enjoyed buying their baskets. I have many which I am happy I kept them. Farewell Longaberger!❤😅
You should have included a tour of the men’s bathroom! Since there were very few men who worked in the office building, there was no need for a huge men’s bathroom, so the urinals were full of gorgeous philodendron plants!!! 😳
This video is like watching a Ghost Adventures show Hahaha!
Beautiful finishes! Its sad to see it not being used .
I have some Longaberger baskets🤗. I knew about this building when it was still open .
I live not too far from this amazing building!
I took a tour there, I guess in the early 2000’s. I was a collector of the baskets and went for a weekend there with my mom and aunt.
