Sometimes. Or sometimes a bird will get upset and noisy for other reasons. I have a parrotlet that freaks out about any noise that happens, a bag crinkling, a car going by, the wind blowing, a bird outside, anything, and start to scream. I love him, he’s so sweet and the most loving pet I’ve ever had, but he’s super high maintenance and very easily set off. Then I have a budgie that makes soft sweet peeps until the parrotlet is going crazy, then he joins in

Angel my whiteface cinnamon pied cockatiel of almost 13 years lives in my bedroom and has two cages he can use. The cage doors have never been closed and he puts himself to bed when he gets tired. There are night lights and he very rarely sleeps in the same place twice. I tried partially covering one of the cages ,but he wouldn't use that cage until I removed the cover. Night frights are not a problem ,since he just flies to me for protection (he has excellent night vision which surprises me). I know when he's awake because I can hear him scarfing down his super fine pellets like a hungry dog. Angel has his own pillow on my bed and flies to me about nine AM for head scratches ,then falls back to sleep on his pillow after preening. If he was caged and covered, I would miss out on this interaction with him- very important in these times of social distancing.

My birds are in the den with the TV & my computer, so I cover them at night. They get layers in the winter (a sheet & blanket) & when it warms up, they just get a sheet. Sometimes Gilbee, my silly 'tiel will go down his ladder and walk around on the cage floor & chirp & play with his toy on the lower level. If I peek in to see what he's doing, he'll hiss & go back to playing when I lower the cage cover. XD He does go higher when he feels tired as I always find him up top in the morning. My budgie Cookie will always fly over to his favorite toy when it's time for bed. :D They're pretty good about being quiet in the morning when covered too. If you walk past Gilbee's cage, he'll softly chirp to tell you he's awake. :D

I cover my cockatiels cage because he's in our living room and it wouldn't be nice and dark if we didn't. Also it's a clear sign of bedtime but he kinda hates the moment I come at him with the blanket.

When the sun is down and the street lights are on, I cover the budgies cages with a flannel cotton blanket that covers the top of the cages and 3 sides; the back side of the cage is left open so they get enough air. There are times where I get up in the middle of the night, but in walking around the house, they do not awaken. They sleep for 12 hours and start chirping in the morning upon daylight and the sound of the outdoors birds here in Florida, thus the blankets come off the cages for the day. There have been times where I would come home late, around 10-11 pm, and their cages would not be covered, and they would be startled with me walking in. Once the cages are covered, they go back to sleep. They have been doing well for the 2 years that I have had them. Very good video; nice to see Sprinkles in the beginning of the video.

My birds love their blanket they see me coming with it and they know it's bedtime. It makes them fill secure and safe, I have always covered every bird that I've ever owned. My conure and linnie share same cage and they get in there bed together after I cover them. My pineapple conure that is almost weaned will have his own cage and I will cover him up also.

i cover my parakeet's cage because the cage is in my room, and i go to bed a lot later than them. i usually cover it around 8-9 pm and give them 10-12 hours of darkness :)
(i use a light bed sheet and tuck the corner into a ladder so its not covering it completely)

I used to cover my young budgie's cage. She would made angry chattering sounds. Then I stopped and simply closed the window blinds to shield outdoor light. She seemed more content with that option. Shes always quiet at so I think that is satisfactory for her. Thanks for the information from a Former Coverer at Least For Now!

I cover my budgies completely except for the bottom 2 inches of their cage. I cover my finches and cockateil everywhere but the front of their cage so they can see at night. I never have had any problems doing it that way. My birds are like my kids, after being on a schedule, sometimes they put themselves to bed if I am late getting there coverings on. 😊

I cover all 4 of my birds cages, but we have these special lights where they all stay where I can set them so that they’re still on but at 30% like a night light. They still sleep, and it’s really helped with my cockatiel so he doesn’t get night fright. Plus covering them actually lets me sleep in because usually they would scream all morning 😂

Have M and F canary’s in separate cages for obvious reasons, and when I go to cover them at night, they get all upset because they can not see each other. Have to cover cages insteps while they run across bottom of cage ,only cover top 2/3 . The female will even start singing as they bothtear up paper strips running across bottom. Goofy but quite endearing as they run around until exhausting, when they finally retire to their perches and settle I finish covering front. The whole putting to sleep process takes 45 min, my infant son until now, never took that long, and he is now 12.😄

Hi Donna! thanks for all your great videos! I was the guy who accidentally killed my birds last year by burning a Teflon pan and the fumes killed both of my budgies, remember? It was awful because they were so young and beautiful and I didn't realize the danger from Teflon non-stick pans to birds before that but you did and were very nice and supportive and i thank you for that.... well some time has past and I found three other young budgies about a month ago and they are great and very pretty. I wanted to let you know that one of my new budgies is a female and I tend to agree with you that females can be less friendly than the males. I have never had a female before and I notice she likes to chew things more and is less interactive than the male. The third bird is only 7 months old and not sure if male or female but maybe female too! The older two are bonding so might consider breeding next year when they are older - will keep you posted. By the way i cover my birds every night too, thanks again and stay safe!

At first it might be scared but after a few days it will know that it's bedtime. My budgies would always stretch their wings while I covered them with their blanket lol. I use a small throw , u can even cut a sheet to fit your cage if u wanted. Your budgie will do great , and don't be surprised if it freaks out a little as your covering him up this will stop. Mine would at first also but they get use to it and realize it's not gonna hurt them . I'm no expert but I've had birds for over 20 years so I know a little hahah, Good luck to you,

When I first got my budgie I didn't cover him because he didn't like it and would freak out. He lives outside. Last year, an owl came to visit and freaked the budgies out so much. I now cover their cage so they feel safer, luckily the owl hasn't been back. But now I just cover the cage not because of the owl, but just so they can sleep better and don't see anything that spooks them in the dark.

I keep my birds on my balcony, it’s covered with that type of thin fencing you cover your pools with. I cover their cages because they get night fright and there are A LOT of light outside from cars.

I cover my bird. Seems to settle him down. I think it keeps him warm and snuggly. Just at night.

    You're so awesome sis.
I want to know as a woman do you have kids (no hate I'm childfree) if you do, how did you manage to alternate time between proper pet care and proper parenting? Did one or the other suffer during parenthood? If no kids completely ignore my question always wandered how parents manage with large amounts of animals.
You are awesome love your work and channel!❤

I hope this question gets answered 😍 I have been covering my birds cage for sleep since day 1. He likes it for sleep. He won’t sleep if I don’t. He will watch me all night because he is in my bedroom mainly because I have a cat. So I have the bird in my bedroom and keep the cat OUT. I always leave a slice open for ventilation for sleep.
Recently I’ve been keeping his cage covered on sides and back in the day (sometimes) because we have central air and summer gets hot so we have to run the AC. A parrot page on Facebook told me to never cover the cage because birds don’t have a way to exhale?? Unmmm? They said I was going to give him respiratory issues coverigg by the cage at night and even when I leave the entire front uncovered. I’m confused?? I want to protect against drafts. I can’t sweat bc I’m heat intolerant (hashimotos). So I thought this was the best for him and for me. Any thoughts on what they told me not to cover him ? Thanks so much ❤❤

I have been covering my birds for many years without issues. As long as you leave a small section open they are fine.

There have been times when i been up late and i was worried about disturbing my fish so I covered the tanks to make sure the little light i had on while i was up wouldn't bother them during there rest time. Fish need dark time too. Its surprising to see some people dont even think to turn the lights off in the tanks at night for there fish. How do you expect them to sleep with bright light 24/7?
I get a kick out of seeing my gorami in the morning when i turn the lights on and see them go from a lot of dark from the black markings back to normal blue with a little black and from orange with a huge blue stripe to orange with a little blue stripe once they woke up and get going. I have 2 different kinds. The betta and guppies dont seem to fire down or fire up like that from what i can see though i know its fairly common in aquatics to help hide at night.

I have a blue one too and I named him coquito (little coconut). That's a Puerto Rican drink.
I'll probably name the next one Feather-Rico (Federico) 😁

I have 2 budgies, each 1-1/2 years old. Recently, the blue budgie hates to be covered, he protests by banging toys and picking a fight with the yellow bird. Otherwise, these two male birds get along well. Also the blue budgie spends a lot of time during the day pleasuring himself,....a lot! So I never saw such a display....and I am in my 60's and have had budgies all my life. I have never reacted to his activity. During the day the blue budgie hops on my finger or shoulder and all is well. They are allowed out to fly and play. I am still covering them at night with a loose cotton cover with plenty of breathing space. Maybe I should stop covering them, I will probably try that, but it is contrary to what I have done with my birds all my life. Donna, thank you for your wonderful videos....I always enjoy your gentle ways with your birds. Any suggestions?

Hi, try the cage uncovered and see how it goes. Maybe he wants to stay up longer or sometimes covering them can make the cafe cozy like a nest box and the birds gets hormonal and that's why he is getting excited.
