You are so good with your birds especially in emergencies. You have the midas touch! I would be all thumbs and tape sticking onto the wrong places and perhaps getting it on the feather. ( oh, no!) Too bad this video is 50 years too late but good to know for the future. If my first bird had a temporary cone/collar like this, she could have been saved. A piece of plasic was chew off a 4-ball chained plastic toy leaving a sharp piece protruding out that stabbed right into the left chest of my bird. By the time I discovered this, the bleeding stopped but she started to pick at the dried up blood that was making her feathers all stick together and reopened the wound and bleed to death. I just love your plush cockatoo, Coco!. They do make a lot of realistic looking large parrots out there but when it comes to budgies, they somehow don't make plush budgies that look very realistic. Many look horrible. LOL.... The few nicer looking one that I found on the web was from Japan and for a very tiny one, perhaps 4 to 5 inches tall, very cute and realistic looking just costs too much. If you ever see a plush budgie, please let me know. Also, love your alternate shades of lavender nail polishes!
Very informative video; I wish I had known this 15 years ago when I had a budgie whose foot was injured from a stupid, nylon mesh skirt that I put around the cage to try to prevent seeds, and whatever, from landing on the floor. His foot got stuck in the mesh while I was at work and when I came home, I found him tangled up and foot badly twisted. He pecked at his foot, it became infected; took him to a vet that wanted to amputate, I said NO, he died the next day. I will never put a nylon mesh skirt around a cage again. I want the birds to be messy so they can enjoy themselves. Now I know what to do if any of my 4 budgies ever need a collar. Your new bird CoCo is real nice; you had me going there...hahaha !
Hi Thank you for sharing your video. Though, i have to recommend not to use gauze. I asked the avian vet about it. He told me to use cardboard and avoid gauze, because if ingested it can lead to stomach problems. So if you do use gauze make sure the bird can’t remove or eat it.
Thank you for this video! My Senegal is a chronic all over picker. We introduced various collars about three weeks ago. It’s been challenging, but I do like this type of collar for nighttime and will make some. 💕
I'm sorry Starfire got urt, but I'm glad that thanks to your quick thinking, you were able to help her until you could see a vet the next day! Welcome to the flock, Coco!!
VERY HELPFUL. My conure has a sinus infection and can’t stop scratching his head. The vet would not make a cone for him, even though he won’t stop scratching even after being given medication
Hello, I just had to take my one of my love birds in for a checkup because I came home to them not using one of their feet at all, and it ended up being fractured somehow, long story short, they were able to apply a bandage stint and gave antibiotics and pain meds, but I’m just worried because they keep trying to take the bandage off. I was told to make them a diy cone out of some felt pieces which I did, but they were either too tight or were able to be ripped off in 1 second. I read on a forum that it might help to just add some more wrap to their leg so they what they end up picking off isn’t the actual bandage, but I don’t have any vet wrap and am wondering if human medical tape is safe to use? The wrap was pretty costly and I’d prefer they kept it on for the time I was told, so any advice is greatly appreciated
Hi 👋 Donna , that’s a very good emergency collar. You are terrific! You are good at DIY .My vet is open regular hours , however they will not allow anyone to bring in their exotic pet or bird inside their office. You have to hand your pets carrier to your vet tech.I do not like this but I have no choice.
Hi Donna ! My baby lovebird has ataxia ! Can you recommend what I might be able to do to help him ? I was watching this vid and thought a collar might help as he can t hold his head upright ! TIA For any help !
So sorry about your Lovebird. It's best to take him to an avian vet for evaluation and treatment. In the meantime put him in a small travel cage. No perches. Place something soft on the bottom of the cage like a towel with paper towel over it for easy cleaning. Make sure the towel is smooth with no loops that the nails can get caught on. Place food and water near the bird. Also you can pile a towel in a circle like a nest to help hold the bird up and it helps hold the head up.
Very helpful video. My lovebirds is having stress problem and he is pucking his throat feather. Please, I need to take out the collar to allow the bird eat? How long did you keep the collar?
Hi, I kept the collar on overnight. I took it off during the day and only put it on when she stated to chew her toe or I had to leave her alone for an hour or so otherwise she could not eat, drink or move much
I think I have a great idea if your bird is is baby or little big then buy scrunchies and use it instead of coller belt and believe me it's a good idea my bird had and habit of plucking so I put scrunchies on his neck and he stopped doing plucking
Hello, my bird also injured his toe and kept pecking at it. Do you know any home remedies so I can cure his toe? I'm trying to avoid going to the vet because of the Pandemic.
Hi, I don't know of any remedies but it's best to house him in a travel/ hospital cage and keep the cage really clean, especially the perches. Watch out for infection as he will need antibiotics. Most vets are doing telemedicine during the pandemic so perhaps you can call an avian vet for help. Try making a cone but you have to watch him and make sure he can eat and drink
Our young 8 month old cockatiel, Mister, flew/fell off my mom’s shoulder (she was sitting down at least), but the poor lil guy landed kind of hard and started bleeding. We took him to our aviary vet and in simple terms, he broke his butt. In more detailed terms, he landed at an angle where the skin at the base of his tail feathers was injured. The vet told us that it was a relatively common injury seen in young African Grays because of the length of their tail feathers and the clumsiness that comes with being a baby. Poor Mister had to get 5 stitches on his butt. The vet made an improvised cone of shame out of a used x-ray image. She cut it into a cone shape and instead of looking like a radar dish (like they do on dogs and cats) his was upside down. He looked like he was wearing a poncho. We got home and my mom was worried the x-ray plastic would have some sharp edges so we replaced it with some felt cut into the same shape. It was flexible, so we didn’t worry about it hurting his neck and it kept him away from his stitches! Edit: that all happened 3 years ago, and Mister healed up perfectly! He still doesn’t like having his tail/rear end touched, but what bird does?
Actually this same situation is happeing with my budgie .. so put a collar on her neck but she's is not calming her self and try to cut the collar.. i also check the collar it is so losse she can breath easily . So now pls tell me what would i do...
@@Loveofpets actually am from india there is no vets near .but her feet was ok than suddenly other day she fell so sick and sorry to say but she passed out last night . Rip cloe. And thanku for the response

I love my plush Cockatoo and was looking for other birds but they only had peacocks. I hope to find a Budgie and Cockatiel one day.

My bird started to pluck its feathers, she broke her tail yesterday, wings looks terrible, only shafts left. I guess i have to try this out.
Hi. It's best to bring your bird to an avian vet to see if there is anything wrong. There may be a few reasons why she is doing this.
I think I have a great idea if your bird is is baby or little big then buy scrunchies and use it instead of coller belt and believe me it's a good idea my bird had and habit of plucking so I put scrunchies on his neck and he stopped doing plucking
Good luck trying to put one of those around the neck of one of my Lovebirds, they'll take your hand off. Lol

Glad he is okay. A felt collar would be much better than plastic.
Many years ago I had a Cockatiel that had to wear a cone with x-ray material 😀

How do you train your birds to stay on your finger
Most of them were hand raised and hand tamed already.
