I just got a shipment of turkeys and one was super weak and even took a spill in the chick water dish. I went and got an electrolyte vitamin additive for their water . It worked amazingly. Saved that chick for sure. Just a tip for anyone with weak chicks.
Hey! I raise chickens, all hens, but recently I found (about a dozen, new) turkey eggs and I was thinking about incubating them, I have checked and they are still growing inside the egg, I have not seen the mother in a while, so in the chance that I do incubate and hatch turkeys I have a few questions. I plan to freerange but also provide some food and some water. Do I have to clip their wings so they don't fly away? Do I have to worry about them wandering away/are they likely to wander more than chickens? Can I mix them in the same coop as my chickens? When can I put them outside and begin introducing them into the freerange lifestyle? Are they violent? Can I feed them chicken feed when they are grown? Will they interfere with my chickens egg production if I have males? What would happen if I get a rooster? questions are listed in order from most imortant to least important These are the questions I could think of currently, thank you.
My first time raising turkeys and it’s been hard. Every one I had hatched died a day or two later. They don’t seem to learn how to eat or drink and they die. I tried putting one in there with chicks but it still didn’t learn in time. Then I put an egg out with the Jennie’s when it was peeping but the Tom killed it when it hatched. Out of 6 hatchlings they all died 😢. It’s definitely been disheartening. They’re not as easy as chickens. What should I do? Does anyone have any tips
Put shiny marbles in the water. They will peck at it and realize there's water. I lost 3 of my 6 first batch of turkeys because they didn't figure out where water was. Got another batch and put marbles in, they were drinking water in the first 5 minutes. So far 2 weeks along and they are eating and drinking like champs.
How old do turkeys need to before adding to a flock? I just got 5 toms and 2 hens that are a bit over 1 yr old. I'd like to trade/sell off all but one tom and add more hens. I can get poults locally but I don't know how big I need to raise them before mixing them with the mature birds.
Any advice? Got a one year old Tom, very protective of all birds even baby chickens. Doesn't like our son, or really anyone other than me or my girlfriend or the lady down the street. He's a great gardening friend, I trust him with my cannibus but can't trust him with my son.
Interesting, our turkeys have all been overly friendly to everyone but we don’t have children for them to socialize with so I am not sure how they would be with kids. Best of luck!
The answer is no. If you’ve raised them from poults and contained them to where their feed, water source and roost is for at least 12-16 weeks they won’t go far even if you let them free range they won’t stray far and they’ll come back on their own to roost at night.
I have a wild turkey hen who visits my yard. I want her to stay close What can I put out for feed to get her to stay close by? I want her to eat grass and bugs. I would like even more to join her. Any tips to get them to stay close to the yard? We are in the country.
@@splitarrowfarm we have 3 poults that are almost 6 weeks old and still in a brooder off of heat. I'm looking at putting them out in a pen with a few pullets, any advice? The pen they go in will be moved every other day to fresh grass. My biggest concern is do they still need luke warm water once outside? Also can they have red pepper flakes and garlic? Thanks
Some general times are: jeep them in the broader until they are 3 to 4 weeks old. Then move r hem to a protected shelter like a salatin style tractor until they are 7 to 8 weeks old. At that point they should be hardy enough to put out on pasture in a more open roosting shelter where they can roam freely. At least that's what I've learned from salatin.
Great question, we got a bulk discount but it was just a couple of dollars per chicken. We ordered from Tractor Supply (www.pntrs.com/t/8-10813-235655-137077) depending on where you live they just ship them live at a good low cost!
Save the children. Boycott TSC they host Drag Story hour for children. Thanks for the video. Sorry I use to love tractor supply until I discovered that they are groomers. I was looking for a video on older birds. My turkeys won't fit in chicken coop. 😂
Oh wow didn’t know! And we do actually have 1 adult turkey with our chickens now but she can’t fit through the coop door we have to open the whole barn door for her haha
Teaching children that there are different kinds of people isn't grooming. Drag is an ancient art form and children love to see bright, colorful characters- think of their love for Disneyland and similar things. Their parents are present. Nobody is seeing anything salacious at these book readings. People who grow up learning about differences in their fellow humans are much more likely to be accepting and kind- that goes for how they feel about themselves, too. I recommend doing research on the topic from a source that is more balanced- and please keep an open mind and heart. Have a wonderful day ❤
Ok. Hate to nitpick but, if this is an introductory video to raising turkeys for the beginner, step one would be calling them poults not chicks. Just saying.
So you do like to nit pick. She did an awesome video. You could have kept scrolling..but you chose to show how petty and nit picky you are. Get a life.

I feed the little ones egg white, 50% protein once a day along with 28% protein starter. Soldier fly worms as well.
Great!
@@splitarrowfarm I found that broccoli leaves are there favorite green, dice it for the new born.
I thought you said they shit (ship) quickly....we just got two turkeys and i would highly agree with that statement hahaha

Once the turkeys are around the same size of the chickens we will integrate them in usually.
If I have a turkey hen that has already been laying eggs is it to late put a tom with her
No
Thanks

We haven’t but our turkey is quite heavy by now

do turkeys need grit?
Grit is great for turkeys!

@mjk5153Lmao! 😂😂
Wonderful commentary, but need also to see the chicks. Thank You.
Good tip thanks!
Poults. Chicks are chickens. Turkeys are poults.
They are so cute and fluffy 😍
Thank you!
Adorable *
Always get as large as pine flake as is made. Smaller shavings and they will eat the pine.
Good to know! Thank you for sharing
Please I need to know which drug is good treating the chick of turkey more especially from one week to one one month because is a challenge to me
We bought baby chicks that came medicated so I am not sure if the exact medicines sorry
Where can I get some of these turkeys
We order online or you can check a local feed store
Thanks for the info 💯❤ Respect

Fun, I don't know much about training an adult turkey but best of luck
How old before they could go outside? I’m building a chicken tractor with a heat lamp and they are 2 weeks old. it gets just above freezing at night
I would wait till they are feathered out or temps are warmer
