@@bollesaus1527 Yea looking back does feel cringey, but this quote does seem to be true. Plenty of people - especially a lot of Americans, but it's not limited to them... - seem to be injected with this pride for their precious "free speech" and yet...? You are expected to only say and post things that are not in any way offensive and even then, some folks will manage to find you offensive. Isn't that ironic? The point of free speech is that you should be able to speak your mind and think freely. But you aren't entirely free to do so because everything is taken out of proportion, context and culture and everything is poisoned with this fear of getting exposed by some overly sensitive or misjudging people. We live the era where it's culturally appropriate to get offended over anything and people take great pride in it. I don't understand why people enjoy being weak, pathetic, angry little victims...

I feel like the phrase "If you see yourself cringing at something you said back then, you've grown as a person" is a bit one-sided.
What if the person I was talking to back then still thinks I'm like that? I've said, and done a lot of cringeworthy things back then, and I'm always paranoid that they still think "Hey, isn't this the weirdo that drew weird pictures of me when we were in 2nd grade?"
It's irrational, I know, but damn..

o-or dont, what if someone sees you just randomly standing up.
Then some years down the line you hear some laughing behind you at a café, what if they were some who saw you stand up, you couldn't really confront them about it since they are probably just chatting normally and if you're wrong then you just look like an even weirder person.

I always think about that, but then the more I think about it the more I realize there is a large chance that they have forgotten. • @ivopavlov5434
      @ivopavlov5434 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Whatever the case is, you should never let yourself down by your embarrassing story. Of course, don’t act as if it never happened but rather take a lesson from it and try to move on. If you can’t, go and share whatever is bothering you with someone in person and you’ll feel better.

    • @X4Alpha4X

best thing to break out of that thought is to try and think of someone else that's done a cringey thing, and then you realize how hard it is to think of someone elses mistake. then you can realize that its equally as hard for other people and chances are you are actually the only one to still remember, or at least think about, your own cringe.

I get the exact same feeling. I realize every comment I make was made in a mindset I had “in that moment” regardless or how positive/mild/negative it was.
Since I’m no longer in the mindset I was, they look unwarranted or weird. Like I’ve lost the context of the comment and I’m reading something out of the blue.
I guess a dramatic way to put it is, it feels like I’ve connected with a past life of mine. I can understand the sentiment, I even recognize it in an uncanny way, but I can’t grasp why “they” made it since I’m no longer in that time period.

I'm pretty sure it's nearly impossible to look at something you wrote some time ago and not feel uncomfortable. Maybe it's the "Uncanny Valley" effect of something that feels like you *could* have written it back then but you're not 100% sure, so it feels like it came from some kind of inaccurate copy of yourself. Everyone changes a little bit day by day so it's no miracle that old comments feel slightly "off" even if we can't exactly pinpoint how we've changed since then.
Heck, I've once had that uncomfortable feeling from comments I wrote like just two weeks(!) ago. I guess that's why I never felt motivated to write in a diary when I was young lol

Philip, I absolutely agree with the message of this video. Holding people accountable for malicious comments or behavior is one thing, but witchunting and cancelling people for not knowing better years ago is stupid. I'm almost certain that we all made some stupid joke at some point of our life that we regret, and getting "cancelled" for it ages later, when it's apparent that we grew and learned, is actually counter productive. We need to pick our fights, and not fight everyone, because it makes us feel better about ourselves. Kevin Hart is the finest example for this.

“Censorship” of older show like the infamous “Advanced D&D” of community (which features a black face [it was a dark elf but whatever]) aren’t done as a sign of a new sensibility to an old issue or because the content in question is considered politically incorrect. @@vlc-cosplayer It just seems to me like the saying "Whatever you get to the Internet - stays there" will still hold true no matter what.
Tbf, the whole situation of "I might get judged for what I said in the past" can't hold true today, 'cause those things were done/said in the *past*, so only the consequences of them may apply, not them itself. It's like saying that you should go to jail because you said/done something as a child. And I understand that it's a little bit extreme, as you're probably were not wholly in control of your own doing(you're a child duh), but still, I think this example applies.
That's why I find it paranoid. And even if someone wanted to do something against you - they would've done it immediately, without trying to compile whole lot of data to smack you hard, 'cause you can just get to deleting this stuff in that time. As Philip does atm. And this raises the question of: "How do you prove that this is actually what was there?". You take the screenshot? Save the HTML? You can edit both. If they post that evidence, saying "Look how bad he is! Look what he said a while ago!" while spicing it up with screenshots - what's stopping you from just going and deleting this stuff? It's not like they can prove that it was there, so you can just brush it off. It's another thing, if a lot of people see it in person, but even those opinions can be fabricated. Hell, while coming back to the topic of fabricating evidence - I could it right now with the easy HTML edit. So what, we should believe it right now, if anybody does that? Then what value does that articles about "Look how bad he is! Look what he said a while ago!" holds? Practically none. That's another why it is paranoid.
Finishing up, - people change, as do their opinions, so the sane *normal*, person would totally understand why it was as it was, and how it probably would not apply to nowadays.

There's an obscure song that, for reasons I won't get into, I used to hear every single morning when I was younger. It's on TH-cam but has like less than 5 000 views. Anyway, it suddenly popped in my mind the other day and I spent hours finding it (very generic lyrics, I'd forgotten 80% of them). When I finally found the TH-cam upload, I went to check the comments and guess what; there was a comment of my own talking about that very song, posted a few years back. I was talking about this song and how I used to listen to it every morning and how I'd spent that entire day trying to find it.
I feel like I'm doomed. Like, until I die, every 5 years or so I'll remember that song, try to find it on TH-cam and end up in the comments reading what I can only describe as checkpoints of my own existence. Uncanny...

I feel that comments and things said or written many years ago should not be able to have any impact on the person who wrote or said them in current times. Only if they are extreme. All too often you see a bad joke made 8 years ago being a big controversy and even contributing to somebody leaving whatever platform they were on (e.g. TH-cam). I respect that you don't want some of your old comments to be publicly visible anymore, and I understand why too. Some of them I do find nice though. I especially noticed the one on the DMM video you showed. I remember watching that video quite a while ago, and it puts a smile on my face to know that you watched and appreciated the same video. Anyway, love your videos! kthxbai.

The only way to avoid the secret police is to have no opinion. If you only do and say those things that cannot possibly offend anyone, then you will be left alone. But you must also recognize that the number of actions, beliefs, images, sentences, and words that offend no one is constantly diminishing. What a normal person could do in the 70’s is not what a normal person can get away with now. Since 911 the constriction has been accelerating, and millions of normal people are feeling choked. The question is, how little air can you survive on? How much of this can be overlooked before you do something? How Orwellian does it have to get before you decide to rebel? you can hire someone on fiverr or something to create a script for you that uses youtube's API to delete all your old comments at once from a certain period of time :) just be careful and review the script so you don't get hacked

@@kliksphilip I believe its disingenuous to characterise such cases as because of things people "said and did". Invariably, the things they said and did were objectionable, or offensive, or in some other way illustrative of the type of behaviour or ideals people in certain careers shouldn't perform or hold. Nobody is being jumped on because they were merely a bit rude.

Yeah I've always wondered that. I make a couple slightly hurtful comments on some slightly small TH-camr's video and not expect them to see them ever. Low and behold, an hour later they respond. Feelsbadman

    Hi Philip,
If you go to history on youtube, then click comments, you might be able to set up a script to automate 'manually' deleting old comments. TH-cam used to have a feature to sort them old-new but it doesnt seem to be there so maybe another script to scroll down overnight could help too.
