Yay! You made it to NZ! I was privileged to be at that muster and bought 3 mares from it. We also had a mare from a much earlier muster, a very much loved family member. I saw this horse being ridden, had a stockwhip and pistol cracked off his back, in October 2014. The muster was in May. Tommy has a great reputation here in NZ. Well done! They are the smartest horses I know, keeping one step ahead of their thinking is a trick. But when they accept you, they will give their absolute all.
I am lucky enough to have ridden a Kaimanawa (about the same size as my Brumby Daisy) while visiting the North Island several years ago. Angel was wonderful to ride, with an incredible turn of speed for such a small pony
I've heard your Brumbies are much like our Mustangs in pure trail talent, but can do anything, really, and do it pretty well as the Mustangs can! Give your Daisy some pets and an apple or so, from a fan of ALL tough little horses the world over!

Astonishingly beautiful scenery as you rode... This breed was new to me, so a big treat to watch and so impressed by Tom Waara. I don't get to ride every breed but I have made a Watch Every "Riding Every Breed Challenge" Challenge.
You not only DiscoverTheHorse but also discover other cultures and people. I knew new zeeland only from the kiwi fruits. And that's a big country for a few of people. And i can see it's still a beautiful wilderness, where everybody, humans and animals, can live free. Very nice nature.👍

Beautiful country (my own) and Tom? a true kiwi bloke. I note his horse is a gaited horse... are many Kaimanawa horses gaited, or is this a cross with the standardbred? Thks for showcasing NZ and it's beautiful land, and the horses are very special.

Amazing video and beautiful horse breed. I do have a slightly odd/interesting suggestion if possible. How about an American Mammoth Jackstock Donkey. I know it's not a horse but it's from the same family and they are surprisingly big
They aren't a breed that was developed, well maybe on Maori land. A lot originally were escaped horses, and abandoned horses in the 1800's and more recently.Their main range was over Defence land in Waiouru where the main Army camp is and troopers horses were let go too. There were restrictions imposed on numbers because of an endangered plant species, so there is an annual roundup. Sadly a lot go to slaughter if no-one buys them. Strict eligibility as to experience and facilities to get them because they are wild horses .Stallions used to be a bloody nuisance for the Waiouru Pony Club because they would break fences to get to and take off with mares. They have been used as target practise by the Army in the past too. They are incredibly smart and with a helluva natural jump and plenty take top honours in the ring. The crack down on numbers has meant healthier horses and taller ones. There is a Kaimanawa Breeders Society now that does a lot to encourage re-homing and sadly rescue.

Hi Kim, there was only one Kaimanawa on the ride, the grey boy. Tom was riding his partbred Tennessee Walking Horse mare so she was showing some gait. Kai's do not have any additional gaits but it is a lovely comfortable trot to ride. The chestnut is a Quarter Horse. All of the horses were amazingly surefooted thanks to the terrain the live on.
My wee Kai mare who was 12.2, had what we called her "power walk". Not a specific gait, but just a great little stepper who would outpace a 16hh horse at a walk. Maori people LOVE a good walker!
In witch of the two islands you was riding those horses? I know it's an island in south-east from australia. And what is the diference between the two? You showed us beautiful picturesques landscapes, where those horses can be free. Because they were crossed between diferent domestic breeds, they are so calm and sweet. But the climb in the mud looks a bit dangerous.🥰
This is in the central North Island, I won't say where for his privacy but its near-ish Waiouru where the horses live in the wild if you want to google it :)
The climb in the mud is just usual stuff when you use horses on farming land. Horses go into 4WD mode and slide down. Give them their head but keep a little contact and you're away! They have generally good natures but some never adapt. Wild ones are for people who really know what they are doing.
Your question if we alrready have riden such kaimanawa will have only a few answers, because: who can know this horse, and who heard already from this breed. It's like you have a factory making breeds. Has the name something to see with the crocodile species caiman?🤔
The name is a Te Reo Maori word, its the name of a mountain range where these horses live. A lot of us NZers have been fortunate enough to ride this breed :)
Hi Joannes, the name Kaimanawa comes from the location in New Zealand the horses live wild and free in. The word loosely translates to 'Food' (Kai) and 'Breath' (Manawa) - so there explains the name of another film made about this breed called 'The Wind Eaters'.

@@joannesmartens9442 This is filmed in the middle of the North Island. I live in the South Island and I am in the film too. I had to fly there. Most New Zealand people cannot speak Maori, in fact many Maori cannot speak it. It was banned for a long time, they had to speak it in secret.
