- ✦ About the video
I go through my usual process of making 3d models in Blender 3D. The video covers methods I use for modeling, UV unwrapping and texturing. These methods are useful for making models for any engine, like Unreal, Unity or Godot. This is not a step by step tutorial but more a guide for understanding how to approach modeling and texturing for indie developers. The software used in this video is totally free - GIMP, Blender and Material maker

✦ About me
Yo, I'm Jens and I'm a solo independent developer trying to make games and entertaining devlogs about how I make my games. I'm self taught in 3D modeling and game development with only some basic Java knowledge from university. I do this in my spare time as I work full time as an engineer so bare with me if my upload schedule is not as frequent as you (or I) would like it to be.

Let me know if you have any specific questions and I'll try to answer them!
Can you do a Video named "I made my Dream Game"?
@@keanu3865 I might do something like that at some point :o
What's wrong with your face?!
Can you compile the assets you made in this video and share them to us
I'm scared, can ya help me. I just wanna make my alien how he looks but 3d.
As a programmer trying to understand art this is a surprising useful information piece
great to hear! :)
Tip: if you want to smooth faster don't do as he did, where he goes through the options, just right click and click "shade smooth". Very quick and easy.
This smooths the whole model though
@@kitsunemusicisfire not when you go first into "Edit-Mode" and select only the faces you want to shade smooth. Then right click and "shade smooth"
Can you do hard edges that way tho? @@michaeljentsch865
The best tutorial I've ever seen. Showing everything that's relevant for a beginner like me while also giving me the feeling of "Yeah, that doesn't seem so bad! I can do that too!"
Amazing work!
Unity actually does have a way to disable backface culling in it's materials. At least in URP which most people use now. Just under the surface options, you turn "render face" From front to both
This is the second time I heard that since I released the video. Sorry for the mistake! I don't know how I've missed that since I was looking for it when making one of my asset packs heh
Most materials are rendering front faces only tbh
I would actually buy a low poly blender course made by you. So simple yet so elegant. Well done, sir.
This is one of the best blender tutorials (imo) it's perfectly simple and explains almost everything you might need as a programmer without modelling knowlege
This is such a great tutorial for all of those who've been trying to begin making a game, even as an unity user this has been very helpful, keep on the great work
thank you for making the easiest quick and understandable explanation on making a modular set of models. that was something ive been wondering for a while lol
Wow, can i just say, this video is really well made! Good job, so useful.
You literally just gave the best explanation of UV unwrapping I've ever seen in a video in just 2 seconds lmao. Well done man. subbed
This tutorial is pure gold, I learned so much from it, thank you
This editing showcases a high standard and I love it.
Thank you very much. This was extremely helpful and entertaining.
Exactly what I needed! Thank you!
Helpful tutorial thanks !
Thanks man this helped a bunch, I was on the verge of just giving up on making a video game and this saved me
I've been watching you on my tv in my bedroom for a few days now so i havent seen your sub count or subscribed until just now, i cant beleive u only have ~8k subs your content is great!
This was funny, educational, perfectly executed, exciting, and I enjoyed every second of it. Thank you
Actually helpful and straight to the point.
excellent approach for teaching ! will start following you. thank you sir !
I think it's been a while since I watch a tutorial and also had me very entertained!
Proper good blender tutorial thank you very much :)
Im here taking a peep into prop modeling after i enrolled in a course, just to see what i should know without going in blind it feels. I super love ur execution and humor. Also this is the most simple video ive seen someone do on blender, thank god 😂
To me its basically CSP but for shapes lmao and i dont need to know every single tiny setting going in 😭 its something you have to learn over time! So thanks for giving me info thatll actually stick to my brain walls
Thanks, I took a ton of inspiration from your video and made my own tile set to start building a first Unity level. Textures/materials haven't "clicked" yet but I'll get there.
Best Video i have ever seen!!🙏Thank you for everything brother🫡
This is one of the best Blender videos i've seen on youtube, it's simple and straight to the point
Thanks a lot, glad you enjoyed it!
i
love
this
thank you ♥
I was actually wondering why I wasn't subbed. Great video!
Thx for the video.
The ‘fridge cold’ part got me man 😂 also, great video
man this is so cool
Im binging every video on this channel
@3:00 , seeing the timeline constantly running while you were explaining the steps just made this more relatable lmaoo, I be accidentally pressing spacebar by instinct all the time 😂!
Love the UI look. Always been a struggle for me to make UI look good but I like the way you did the hotbar. Also for the weed system. Not sure how many other problems with the gardening system you might be adding but you could look at maybe have an icon like a caution icon that flashes over the garden or near it and when you click or hover it can show like hey there are weeds that need addressing etc etc. And you can give the player an option in the settings to turn on or off visual assistance.
Thai video was super helpful! Thank you so much kind sir 🫡
bro i munch on the corner piece all day if i had to and love every second of it
hilarious, loved it
You can also extrude the tree leaves a tiny amount to make it double sided if you need to.
thank you, my brother, i subscribed and liked this masterpiece. cya
Great tutorial
my timestamp: 5:20 (edges of each piece must align with the grid so each modular piece snaps perfectly)
timestamp 8:54 (If there is flickering, I may have to adjust the heights of certain faces so they no longer overlap)
best video sir
this actually helped alot lol
This is so useful...
Bro, when you said, "I know what you're thinking, 'why am i not subbe---" , I pressed the SUB button so fast. Great video SUPER ENGAGING!
Really nice to hear that you find it useful!
Really good video
Excellent tutorial 🎉 🚽
thanks
Most useful video that i have ever seen 👍🗿
Have a sub 👍
Just wanted to note if you are using Unity, you can click on your model (.fbx) in its asset folder and in the inspector hit automatically generate lightmap. (so you don't have to worry about lightmapping in blender if you're using unity)
Is it possible to do a step by step for like every shortcut you were talking about honestly was trying to follow along as i learn by mimicing and when you randomly had the extra layer for the bottom of the wall i was so lost
Thanks man ive got 0 artistic talent as a programmer so this is heaps helpful
Glad to hear it! Bet you got 1 artistic talent now ;)
thx u for this video too much
The method with the color palette is so cute but doesn't it really suck for baking since you are basically only using a fraction of your texture space?
And btw why aren't you just using the brick texture node in blender?
Love the video and your content none the less!
Good work :)))
Couldnt even make it though the intro before smashing the like 😂
You can fix normals in unreal by using its modelling mod. also materials has a option which makes them 2 faced. Cheers.
Okay first of all the bread butt is the best part of the loaf.
Modular pieces.... the scurge of performance! They look nice though, so good job!
I never sub on the first video but you have done well and I am sure I will be back if I see your name again in my fed keep it up
The fuck is your problem with the holiest part of the bread? Domó for the win!
super bro im also gonna make a game alone
When you are in edit mode, I see that you have blue grid lines that look to be at the center of each edge. Is this an add on or something I can enable ?
where did you get the color pallet thing for texturing
me, someone who actually subbed when you said to sub c: I have been struggling. trying to practice isometrics and this video helped so much
Can you please make a complete tutorial of how you made this scene in unreal engine. how to do lighting , post process volume and everything .. please........
Useful tips, do you have a Discord group? would love to see more of this content
new sub
You mind sharing your color palette you made?
Hey man can you do Roof modular tutorial. I always have super problem with roof. If I want to make like 2x2 it always screwup entire scene. wall and floor is super easy but roof. its harddd
6:48 trying to do that with the door 1. makes the z axis scale larger, and 2. makes the bottom of the doorframe move in as well. Any way to prevent these?
Im trying to make my corner wall, but I cant seem to maintain a 90 degree angle in the corner. I've spent probably way too long trying to do this, but I basically need to line my vertices up but I keep getting close to, but not 90 degrees. Snapping has not helped because it either moves the vertices too far or not far enough when trying to get them exactly right. Are yours exactly 90 degrees? If not, have they caused issues lining things up?
junge Jens ist so ein geiler Name
Can you make a tutorial for how to get the ps1 texture look?
there's an asset that helps to render both sides in unity
is it fine if i screenshot the color palette to use for my game?
What’s the deal with deleting the startup cube and creating a new one? Is it just a meme or does it actually have a purpose, like resetting something?
what to do these buttons do? "Don't worry bout it" 😆🤣
Your basically making the Sims 4 build mode in blender 😱
U deserve way more subscribers than u have
Question, at 7:22 when exporting models, are you moving all the individual building objects to the origin within the same blend file, or are you separating all the objects out into their own blend files?
I usually keep them in the same blend file and move to origin. Then you can either export models individually or altogether, depending on how simple you want to access individual models.
i like corner bread for toast ^^
How do you get the new cube?😅
you need to drop blender modelling tutorial bec i am old school and i frickin nee it
SIR i use 3ds max for game its helpful or not reply pleasse sir
why does his have one of those colored lines going outside from the mesh
Funny how occasionally, I find videos with backgrounds music that I have already used for videos. It's always like.. wait a minute.
Is there an actual reason to delete the starting cube or is that just a joke all the professionals tell whenever they're trying to teach newbs? 😅
for those who are using unity and facing that transparency problem just add a solidify modifier to your mesh with a vert little value and the problem will be solved....
Im using blender for 6 months and Im still avodiing uv wraping....
Hi Jens, thanks for the video!
Small question: can I use Unreal Engine materials for the objects I created in blender? I tried applying the material, but the material seems zoomed/warped. Also after I applied a 'smart UV project' on the blender object. Do you know of a good way to fix this, besides manually changing the material for each object I import? Thanks!
How to recreate issue:
Step 1: Open blender and delete default cube (very important)
Step 2: Create a cube mesh and apply any material/colour
Step 3: Apply smart UV project
Step 4: Export as FBX
Step 5: Import into UE
Step 6: Apply brick material to the imported object, and notice that the bricks are HUGE
Hi! There should be no issue when using either imported materials or the ones created in unreal. Does your objects only have 1 set of UV maps? The smart uv project should not cause an issue with the material either if it looks good inside blender. When exporting try exporting using fbx units scale (Im not by the computer but I think that is what its called) and check the two boxes i showed in the video. If that is not what it’s called lemme know and ill look it up tomorrow!
Thanks for the response! In the meantime, I found a dirty fix: I simply scaled up the UV map of the object, so the material is smaller in comparison. I will double check the export settings tomorrow to see whether that also works :)
press A and it selects everything int the scene
there is a 2 side render feature in unity
I eat the corner piece of the bread.
I really wanted to know how you made the ginormous mansion for your game, now I know(kind of😅)
yeah it's basically the same haha
Not to hate, but the "just do this" directions left me completely unaware of what 'this' was. I'm a blender novice (if that) so maybe I'm jumping into the deep end here but a bit more explanation as to what you're doing would be great.
Great video. 09:40 what is that game?
Did you find out what that game is? I'd like to know too
@@jorgejustjokes313 Nope :C
@@andrewsneacker1256 I've found it, it's Ooblets!
At 5:27 he has his object at a complete 2D view, does someone know how he did this? :)
Yeah just click at one of the axis circle on the right top of the viewport
amazing work i am a 16 year old 11 grader who wants to make my dream game and start coding but its hard can u do a vid or a series for coding or recommend a vid that u might have used in the past to start coding cause after i finish grade 11 and 12 and enter college i want to become a dev and can do anything i need without any problem an reply from u whould mean alot and u just earned a new sub keep up the good work and good luck on ur game
Sorry for the late reply, been busy working on my newest video. If you use unreal engine you don't need to write any actual code but can do visual scripting. My advice however if you were to use unreal would still be to learn coding first though, because it is essentially the same way you use visual scripting as you write code. It was a while since I used anything but if I remember correctly there's a website called codecademy where you can learn coding interactively straight in the browser. Check it out to see if you can still use it for free! Hope that helps and good luck on your dev journey! :)
4 bucks, you say? I'm in.
I subscribed because of that first line of selling it 4 bucks
