It has been 5 years and this video is the reason I play drums today! I saw it and I decided to start to play drums. Then I got into many styles, now I'm a jazz player. But I will never forget Portnoy and why I started to play..
Didn't notice that before, but now that you wrote it, it makes so much sense. If I remember correctly, they did a cover on the entire Master of Puppets album
Since you left Dream Theater, i can't listen. My ears can't accept Mangini attacks and technics. It sounds so unsympathetic. We missed you Portnoy. You are the reason of starting play drums for me. And you are my hero.
I barely listen to the mangini albums except for on the backs and gift of music. don't get me wrong, JP is a great songwriter, MM is probably the best drummer out there and JR & JM are masters of their craft but it was MP that glued those pieces together and made DT sound like DT. I may be biased on my opinion but that's just it.
I think thats passing the line of personal preference and stepping into just plain ignorance. Its obvious you’ve never even given mangini era DT a try and sit in this cage of “mAnGiNi iS jUsT a rObOt wItH nO fEeL”.
It’s funny how I was considering Train of Thought to be their best album. I forgot about Scenes and Six Degrees. Seriously, having to call this the 3rd best album is just insane. DT really just made 6 incredible albums in a row from Scenes to Black Clouds. Each one with such a distinct sound and feel. Each one providing their own unique listening experience. God this song is just a fucking blast to play on drums though.
Of course, because all this songs can be part of the tuelve step suite, they talking about of the tuelve steps to recover of an adict to alcohol, the songs that form part of the tuelve step suite are : The Glass Prision This Dying Soul The Root Of all Evil Repentance And the final song, that close the suite are Shatered Fortress.

it's beautiful to watch him playing drums.

@@kevinmeli it's not metal. It's progressive metal
@@kevinmeli not weird actually, it's progressive metal, drummer from prog scene usually have jazz influence.
Keep rocking bro
This album has some of the best rock drumming ever. I remember listening to this the first time and thinking everything he hits is just perfect.
All his parts. Lol
Mike Portnoy is just amazing, even after so many years, he just gets refined.
Love his videos. Always a pleasure to listen, and to see him. I Admire him so much. Hands down easily my fav drummer of all time.
every drummer should have footage of studio recording so that we can learn the proper ways!!

MP is the one who turned all the DT tunes, and notes, and sounds into the beautiful songs
He got ,His taste / signature tones
this song is so heavy! the last 5minutes are absolute Drum Virtuosity of the legendary Portnoy!
I watch this video as a therapy. I don’t think anything while I’m watching just focus on his technique . Unbelievable!

It's similar to root of all evil at 5:00
karthik b are differents parts of the Mike's suite
It supossed to be, and its similiar to repentance, the glass prison, and shattered fortress.

And the final song, that close the suite are
Shatered Fortress.
how did you read my mind?
Frikkin' awesome. I quit.
Who's here after Drumeo? Let's see Danny Carey learn this in 4 hours..
Niceeeeeeee
Perfectly played with tons of techniques. Unlike Magini who apply unnecessary techniques for no reason
This is best of the AA suite even if it is largely derivative of Portnoy's influences or whatever the fuck.

Why the actual fuck is there a part of this song that sounds like fucking metalica....
Let's put s bunch of distortion and other crap on the vocals so the listeners cant understand them !
Who gives a shit about lyrics when the music is this good.
