There are alot of great drummers with great technical skills. But what makes Portnoy stand above them is the human "swing" element that makes all these very technical pieces breathe and come to live. He knows what we wanna hear and executes it perfectly!
You've just put into words what I couldn't explain. This is what always made it difficult for me to enjoy Mangini's replacement. Mangini's skills are absolutely out of this world, but he plays like a robot. Perfectly, too clean, no "swing" as you put it.
@@maximeb190 Now that I have seen them live 2 days ago without clicktrack again makes the live experience also10x better. So even in that way it's "better" than Mangini
@ you’re working on tough music, which rocks! Keep going. Have you tried charting the song out and following along to “sheet music”? You can simplify it if you cannot read music. I see many high level drummers doing this too.
Portnoy was actually 38 when Octavarium was released. When he was 30, the band released Falling Into Infinity. So, you still have time (if I understand the meaning of the clown face correctly, that is) 🙌🏻
4:21 my favorite drum fill in the world
Mine too! I could hear that on a loop forever!
Same man..
Mike has such a good taste for this kind of stuff (IMO)
My favourite fill as well, portnoy is a genius
I can't say anything.. love this drummer portnoy..😂😂😂😂
10:08 - so freakin' amazing rhythm!
This song slowly became my favorite DT epic...uterly perfection.
Portnoy always be in my heart.
old testament's beardless Mike Portnoy. a rare sight.

A clean shaven Portnoy... a rare sight!
What an EPIC song! Absolutely love it. Never gets old.
Bravissimo uno dei miei pezzi preferiti (e sono tanti) dei DT ECCELLENTE
Thx for sharing it man! I love this song, and this is much better than the live version!
Took me two years to learn to play this. Such a fun song
Saya penggemar dari Indonesia, ...Mike Portnoy DT!
Definitely one of my favorite drummers up there with Mensa And Lombardo
Meh Thomas lang would annihilate them all.
@@dcmastermindfirst9418Thomas who? Oh yeah the guy who wasn't good enough for dt. Nah
how do you even remember to play this from start to end with all the other songs you have to remember to play from start to end?
Mike wrote all the set lists back in the day. Also lots of lyrics, and does back up vocals while playing live. He is an absolute power house of rock!
Muscle memory is a very powerful thing. Your body just does it. You don’t think about it
If you spend enough time rehearsing you can know it too 🤘🏼🎵
@@mattnormandrums I been working on New Fang for months, still can't get through it in one take.

Saw it live with Mike, since reunion ❤️
Do dynamic their music, just like watching a movie or opera, bravo !
Portnoy back then thinking about growing a beard with a touch of blue.
This is phenomenal!!!
The King "Portnoy"
I'm here just to see 2000s beardless mike portnoy
Awesome
Congratulate me, I heard this song for the first time. Although I've been listening to them since 2006.
Great cover!! Amazing as the original!!
💀
😂
The funk 🤣
😳
No way, Portnoy without a beard
go mike go
4:20
Portnoy at 30yo: make octavarium
Me at 30yo: 🤡

What a GOD!!!!
Thomas lang smashed him
Love this track. 9:32 and beyond is interesting. Video shows some fills which didn't make it on final version.
Muy bueno,emocionante
A clean shaven Mike Portnoy?! 😮
El final man
Mike being back to Dream Theater just finished the song Octavarium. Do a world tour with Octavarium, and just retire. Make the full story of it.
I would love to see what some other so called "top drummers" would do for this song? Would be very interesting.
Same as CD!!
I never realized he was using two different snares on this song
That jersey is like 15 sizes too big for him!😂
who the fuck was in charge with changing the cameras??? he/she missed the most important moves in the Medicate (Awakeing) section!!!!
The complete video is made by merging of record session takes.
Portnoy beardless😂
He looks so weird without a beard and short hair
I don't think this is Mike people. So thin and his big fucking neck just isn't there. This is a good cover
Es mejor sin barba y bigote.
Bravo tecnicamente , ma privo di anima , non produce emozioni , voto 6
