This and poor unfortunate souls, and the mob song.. all songs I adore from Disney. Additionally, when I created a character for final fantasy 14, it was my first time using a male character in an mmo.. joked with my friend that I was making a man out of myself, started humming this song... and subsequently named my character Li Shang. He is the one character I created for the game that I’ve actually stuck long term lol.
Thank you so much for this video analysis Isaac. Mulan is one of my favorite Disney movies and “I’ll Make a Man out of You” is one of my favorite songs from the film. Hope you do a video based on Disney/Pixar’s Ratatouille. 🐀👨🏻🍳🍲
This was my first inspirational song! I always felt like I could do anything when I listened to it :) Thank you for doing this video! ❤️ Mulan really inspired me growing up. "Reflection" and "I'll Make A Man Out of You" are two songs I always turn to when I need inspiration.
Mulan, the first Disney movie to truly speak of female empowerment. Mulan did it before Frozen and Mulan did it better than Frozen. Mulan is a role model all young women should be looking up to, not Elsa & Anna. I loved this song, growing up. It was awesome.
While I agree that Mulan was a great role model (my personal favourite at least), I do think other Disney movies spoke of female empowerment before (especially Beauty and the Beast, that speaks a lot about consent and women being able to be make their own decisions). Besides, I think Anna and Elsa, while maybe not being the first empowered Disney heroines, are still worthy role models, especially for people that are mentally ill, or that grew up a bit lonely because of the sickness of a sibling. Anna is really sweet, forgiving and understanding, and cares a lot for Elsa's well being even though Elsa seems not to care, and Elsa isn't just a great characterization of a person with depression/anxiety, but she also is a really loving and caring sister in her own way.
@@arilarz5679 Mulan isn't trans. She didn't go to the war becasue she wanted to be a man. She didn't feel comfortable acting as a man, and her identity at the end of the film is Mulan, a cis female. As much as I understand some of her struggles may be relatable for trans people, and I'm glad they can relate in some way to a Disney Princess, Mulan is not trans, neither it's implied that she wanted to be a man, but on the contrary, is an example that a woman can display different traits than the ones expected by society, and that does not make them less of a woman.
There are many types of power, and even some of the classic Disney Princess are valid role models Not everyone can or wants to be a warrior, in the way Mulan is
“Be a man” was also one of my study soundtracks while doing my undergrad in engineering. Women are capable and clever in different ways that should be celebrated. I loved this movie.
I love this song in Mulan in a way that it shows how women can equally work alongside with men (and vice versa, because both are capable in their own ways) versus evil, instead of trying to compete with each other. Note that in the training montage, at first, the soldiers tried to bring each other down/compete/cheat just to outperform the others. In the end when they decided to work alongside each other and respect one's difference, the result becomes amazing. A lesson Mulan left to her co-soldiers as well once her real gender is revealed.
I've always wondered if Shang fell in love with Ping/Mulan during that song not even knowing "he's" a women. xD Very nice breakdown and fun to watch as always! =)
This was the battle cry of my growing up... with four sisters. Ironic. But this song will never be forgotten, it is too cool and has the BEST Disney princess.
Your video was so simple. Just repeating the lyrics really. Don't know why I love your videos so much. Awesome editing with the song in the background. Not loud really. Just enough so you know it's there.
I definitely agree & Mulan is my absolute favorite movie & character plus I'll make a man out of you is also my top favorite song right next to Reflection from the same movie lol
I totally agree that this is both Mulan and Shang's growth song, but I'll go further and say this when their destinies got deeply connected. In order for them to succeed, they had to rely on the other: Mulan needed Shang's training and advices ("This represents discipline, and this represents strength. You need both to reach the arrow") in order to finally retrieve the arrow and gain some confidence in herself, and Mulan success encouraged the other recruits to find their strengths and start becoming better warriors, that was what Shang needed for his career. They eventually build up a solid relationship based on respect and admiration: Mulan wants to learn more, and does her best to learn from the skillful Shang, and Shang eventually learns from Mulan how to be a more human and closer leader, taking pride of his recruits. This is also the beginning of their dynamic as a warrior duo further in the film: in the fight scenes, we can see that Mulan is usually the one that comes up with new ideas (because her strength is her intelligence and creativity, she consistently impresses Shang as much as she did when she kicked him in this song), while Shang, whose strengths are his leadership and great knowledge and physical skills, is the one that "gets down to business" whatever Mulan is trying to do. They are able to complement each other almost perfectly, and they can understand each other's way of thinking in a really accurate way. Idk, man. I just feel this is a really underrated couple and friendship, because unlike other Disney couples, they really need each other in a totally unromantic way: not because they miss each other, or because they were "meant to be", but because they complement each other in such a great way that their success was possible because they both grew up together.
Hey Isaac, I was wondering for your next Disney Music Breakdown video, think you can do Ready as I'll ever be from Tangled the Series. Since you did Varian, I thought you can also do one of his songs.
"You must be swift as the coursing river, with all the force of a great typhoon, with all the strength of a raging fire, mysterious as the dark side of the moon". This is one of those songs I feel I appreciate more over time. I was hoping you would do a video on it, Isaac. To me, it was a sign that things were getting real.
I can't wait to see you and the SCB crew are gonna do... I actually got to you through watching some recommend videos from them, so that's kinda awesome. Also, who doesn't bust out singing when thatt song comes on?
I really like this breakdown Isaac it gives messages and meaning based on the lyrics if you listen closely the entire Song is based on "Before failure and after success" it's more motivating than any rock songs well almost but it's very motivating even Jackie Chan's version is Traditional and motivating Thank you so much for creating this breakdown
When he says that he’ll be in the meet up with the super Carlin bros I cried because don’t thing I have the money to go see them Issac I’d love to meet you and the Super Carlin brothers.
Have you heard it in Chinese and Cantonese..?? Jackie Chan sang them in both languages.. I just love it so much.. but whenever I play Dynasty Warriors I put this song on..
4:35 and 5:39 - to refute your point about equating women with weakness, without speaking - Mulan is demonstrating that she is absolutely capable of doing the tasks in front of her. she Takes out an entire company of troops with her staff (due to the scorpion) and lands a hit on the rocks that are being thrown at her - hitting one of the guys (granted hes not tossing rocks at her) this is further demonstrated during the water scene where she perfectly emulates him and her form is better. Mushu helps her with the fish, but you can understand that mushu doesnt exist and that she's actually doing this her self because shes learned and her ancestors are watching over her... Love this movie!
Hey first off, I LOVE your videos. Would you please do one on what the beasts real name is from beauty and the beast? I know that a lot of people (myself included) call him Adam but I'm not sure that's his real name.
They were all swift of a coursing river with the force of a great typhoon with all the strength of a raging fire and they were mysterious as the dark side of the moon beautifully said my friend
Hi Isaac! Okay again. I’ve commented this. Long story short. Simba got a very special presentation as the rightful heir to the throne. But at the end of the first lion king and the beginning of lion king 2. His daughter Kira, the rightful heiress to the throne didn’t revive the same treatment. Why is that??
I don’t know how much you would be able to get for a breakdown but “worlds greatest criminal mind” from the great mouse Detective might be worth a look. If nothing else than to really analyze just what crimes Ratigan had committed. And you may want to include the cat scene.
This really isn't a musical breakdown. While yes, you explained the lyrics, you never really analyzed the chord progression or melodic structures, their conventions, and president in the rest of the movie. This would be essential in a propper musical breakdown.
And I want to know who Dumbo's father and I really want to know what happened to mes Bianca and Bernard after happily ever after in The Rescuers Down Under
as you're doing so great with these analyses of Disney's iconic song-secuences, have you tried to also made it with a musical number withouth proper lyrics but still enough music to convey a story such as the Night in the Bald Mountain segment on Fantasia where Chernabog does appears, or the Firebird suite from Fantasia 2000?
