    Wow you guys, thanks so much for this video. I've said in other comments on other videos, I spent one year in China and I have a pretty sour attitude towards China. But after watching your videos and watching how you really have come to accept China and everything in it (which is something I could never think of doing), I want to go again to give it another chance. I learned a lot of the language the first year, and met and talked pretty often with a Canadian who had been there for twenty years, and he gave us a lot of insight into how China really is, just like you guys. So I've heard a lot about this, but your guys' attitude living in China encourages me, and these steps help me realize it really is me that needs to start adjusting so I can start accepting. That's so great. So I really appreciate the videos and commentary, and I really really love your drone shots and driving around. That's really how you get to see China, and there's always something different and weird and new happening every day you go out. Something weird, questionable, shocking, but part of the culture. Thanks.

I know you guys probably are criticized for being critical but I really appreciate your raw opinions. I think in Korea it is kind of hard to talk honestly about life as a foreigner since it can personally offend the people in your lives and talking about struggles is seen as weak. I'm not so sure about the hospitality comment around 11:00. I recently just came home (November 4th) from China after 3 years living and teaching at a university. Two weeks before I came back, I lost my passport while taking a train from Nanjing (where I was teaching) to Shanghai (where I was flying home from). Basically I had only enough money to pay for my new passport and visa since I had sent all money to my Canadian bank account in which my card had expired over a year ago and couldn't use. I was only able to afford a hostel for 6 days out of the 14 I was there with the extra cash I had. After 6 days I 400rmb left to last me for the next 8 days before I could claim my new passport. I told the hostel manager I could only afford a few more nights and he straight up said "Don't worry about the money for the rent." He had seen me stressed over the situation for the last 6 days and told me he and his wife had no issues letting me stay for free to help ease my stress. I also hadn't eaten in 2 days and he came by the hostel room I was in with two bags of groceries (fruit, vegetables, bread and western snacks which I thought was adorable). His wife even took me to Suzhou for an overnight trip to help me take my mind off of things. They went above amd beyond to make me feel as warm and welcome as possible. They were strangers to me and I to them but they helped me and I can honestly say, I felt more at home with them than I ever did in Nanjing over the last 3 years. I will never forget them. I had no money but I felt I was treated better than those who knew I had money. I am home now and thinking of what kind of gifts I can send them for the amazing hospitality they had showed me.
    I'm not saying every Chinese person is like this. But please don't say every Chinese person will treat you differently if you have no money because clearly that is a very thoughtless comment.

    • @Azumafoo
      @Azumafoo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Everyone has different experience wherever they travel or live. I'm happy he shared his comment and I don't think he meant to generalize. I think that's just the way westerners speak sometimes. It's not right by any means, but it's something to take into consideration. I don't know you but I'm really glad you're safe and were taken care of! Your situation could have turned really bad and very quickly.
      I also find that males and females have different experiences. It's much harder for the elderly to see a young woman suffering than a male (I am a female and I know this by experience). Personality also plays a big role. Both these males have big characters that might make them seem a lot hardier (motorcyclists, outgoing, male). If they didn't have money people might react differently, thinking he can take care of himself. On the other hand, a stressed, sweet and and kind female will be harder to turn away out of fear that she might get hurt (I don't mean to be sexist, but it's quite easy for women to be taken advantage of or hurt by others based on physical size. It's harder for us to fight off).
      I'm not saying I'm correct, I know that there are probably many chinese people who are willing to help stressed males as well. I'm just sharing what I've noticed based on my personal experiences.

      Perhaps a video discussing various similar oddities that we foreigners to china might find as bizarre as this? I know you've mentioned several things like the public spitting, children urinating in the street, and milk dogs of course, but maybe a small refresher for us, not going into the gory details but perhaps more the socio-politcal side of it? Is this acceptable? In certain rural areas? Overall? That sort of thing. Stuff we as outsiders might find disturbing if we didn't know about it, but could learn more about China and Chinese culture from the video? I know I've become a LOT less judgmental and more accepting of Chinese tourists now that I understand a lot more (thanks to your channel) about WHY they do certain things they do. At restaurants, theme parks, etc. I've learned to be a lot more patient and not judge them for what I see as rude when to them it's a perfectly normal, NOT intentionally disrespectful way to act. We have heard you mention milk dogs a few times and now we have SEEN what they are, but what's behind it? How did it start? Is it common? If so, why? And are there any stigmas attached to it in China like we can see there are in other countries from these comments?

    I think I'm lucky, from the sense that I don't think I have ever really fallen out of the honeymoon into the frustrated part, but into the acknowledgement and acceptance. And I think this is because my level of Chinese was higher than the other foreigners around me, and I saw them going through this frustrated part and and knowing I didn't want to feel/act like they did, because they were being beyond ridiculous most of the time. I've definitely had a China day though, but those are far apart, thankfully.

    Very nice video guys! I like how you describe your TH-cam experience. I've been youtubing from China for almost 4 years and the thing you do mainly focus on during your stay is major differences. As you said in the beginning everything is just amazing after a while you get used to stuff and start seeing the negative aspects. After you've seen that you realise that no country is perfect and maybe offer more communication between your own country and China.

    I have returned to America for I don't know how long, after four years, off and on, in China. America is not as great as I had remembered. And in America, I don't have such strong negative feelings about China as I had when living there. Perspective, I guess. I have been having an ongoing debate with my cousin who lives in Spain about being content in your surroundings, wherever you may be. A good way to be, if you can manage it. Some of us are perpetual malcontents. I never had a real honeymoon experience with China, nor did I experience such deep frustrations either. I have largely lived in a bubble created by my wife. I have had my complaints for sure...but usually I was more apt to laugh at the things I found strange or even disagreeable in China. China is a big country, and I am sure it has many places of great scenic beauty...but what I have seen can't compare with North America. And I must be the only person in the world who doesn't find Chinese food "delicious". But even an old man can appreciate the many beautiful women one sees in China. The big cities are amazing. I love the high speed trains. The best thing about China is the people. They have been almost without exception welcoming and friendly. I regret I didn't make more of my opportunities while living in China. I would recommend to anyone coming to China to learn the language and to dive in wholeheartedly. I wonder what the future holds for foreigners in China? I wonder what my future in China, however long or short it may be, holds for me? Good video, guys. Keep it up! Stay Awesome!

The animal cruelty bothers me a lot and pollution levels but I what can I do I signed a contract already. With that said I may think it's an amazing place a few months from now. I will be training in Beijing but can still choose what city I'd like. I'm thinking chongquing. Cheap and pollution isn't bad there. I am in my early 20s and am going on my own not knowing much about the place.

    There is sort of a progression of being a expat, kinda like the stages of grief. This is one of the stages. But after awhile, it's the same as home. You still have to wake up, put your pants on one leg at a time and go to work.
    Now, 4 countries later, I pretty much just wish for AI robots because people everywhere suck and no escape from stupidity.
    First time I return to the US after several years abroad, I hated it. I kept thinking, where the hell did all these foreigners come from? Why are people more slovenly dressed than 4 years ago? Why do I feel like a criminal, always looking over my shoulder for some cop to bust me for whatever minor violation.

      Yo Mama I actually misspelled the title of the song, which I will now edit. It’s actually “I Remember U”, not produced by Winston or C-Milk. They just chose to use it as their theme song, and it’s a pretty good choice imo

    Those stages apply to frequent travellers to China also. I definitely romanticised it on the first couple trips, and thus also blindly defended the negatives that many people judged China by. However after a few more trips and a decade later the honeymoon is long gone and I'm at the acceptance/reality part (still with some frustration in the mix too though). Even though I'm no longer amazed by everything I see and the country feels very "familiar" now, China is varied and big enough to keep me coming back for more. Oh and we don't all just go on tours to Shanghai and Beijing, give us some credit for being adventurous also ;-)

      I think it has to do a bit more with their mentality, there is this feeling, when you go on a bike tour and stuck in the mud try for an hour to get through it, maybe take a bath in it, it is just fun after all, other people would just bitch about situations like this but for them (and for me) if shit happens, it is an adventure.

      Dr Aaron 301 Absolutely NOOO... for me. It is a racism, violent and has so many things seem out of controls in this society. It is a big "mess" compared to China where society is so very peaceful, safe, even "gentle" in general (despite some minor temporary shortcomings need to be improved), because most of the Chinese people tend to be humble, appreciated and content with what they have and keep things for themselves tendency. Certainly, these are the many reasons why these two white guys despite so love even rudely(for a Chinese's eyes) complaining and so unhappy and "shit this and shit that" about China all the times but still don't want to go back to their own countries such as South Africa. If it was for me, for sure I would go home for good to avoid all these "miserable " places at once, but the fact is, China does not OWE them anything?! Just wonder why?! So, the Chinese government is right; it does make sense and may be why it is so difficult for an ordinary person to become a Chinese /Chinese Citizen.

    • @NJ-wb1cz
      @NJ-wb1cz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Gentleman Racer, but there are tonnes of examples when life does become magically better. Being gay in Saudi Arabia is vastly worse than being gay in Sweden. Being sub-middle class in America is vastly worse than in Canada or Norway, etc.
      I think you're talking about situation when life is great as it is, but even then it's a gross generalization to say that everywhere is the same, each country has it's own mindset, and it might suit you better that the one in your native country.
      It'll be more accurate to say that you have to try to look at other countries objectively

      As to cultural shock...in fact, when I moved from to Connecticut from another state, I experienced a cultural shock. As I have mentioned previously that when I re-visited San Francisco after several years, that too, was a bit of cultural shock from the East Coast, especial from the New England mentality...life is a forever learning experience. Certain places seem to be so much at home where others are not. I felt very much at home when I visited France, even though I am not French descendent nor I speak fluent French, but I felt at home; so I felt at home when I was in London and Tokyo, Japan...however, I felt totally intimidated when I was in Germany, and in most of the cities in CANADA?!?! Go figure...By the way, when I visited Tibet some years ago via Nepal then coming back via Sichuan, because of the difficult conditions that I had to endure I had no time to even think about cultural shock...at that time, I just wanted to be able to come home alive due to some food poisoning and high altitude!!! Thinking back....those were the most beautiful memories of life.

      So does that mean you feel that mothers who breast feed their children are pedophiles too? That if they dare take a picture of it (NO "private" bits showing at all) you'd consider that child pornography? Come on... In Vietnam they breed specific dogs to EAT, so this really isn't that far off. I'm more curious how common it is and whether it's generally considered socially acceptable anywhere BUT way out in the boon docks. Sure we may find it disturbing, but what about people who eat snakes? I know in some parts of the world that's considered madness, but I enjoy a nice rattlesnake filet grilled up cajun style. Japan is more civilized, yes, but it doesn't mean the people there are any more open-minded and their lifestyle any less f... up. Why is their lifestyle messed up? Because in their eyes it's perfectly normal to spend 14hours a day at work, live with mommy and daddy through their mid 30s, tolerate child porn, think they did nothing wrong in China, Korea and the Philippines during the first half of the 20th century, obey any kind of authority instead of using their own judgment, believe that foreigners are morally and racially inferior. And the list goes on.

      They have labor camps where the inmates make Christmas decorations. The people in there do not count towards official prison statistics because most of them haven't been charged with crimes.

      I watched a show about jails in china, and they have a pretty tough system. they have the prisoners sing, and if thy don't sing they belly club them until they do. Then they take them out to mow the lawn, by hand, one blade at a time. you do that in the states and 2.5 million liberals would be crying for 8.5 million years. I would like to see our laws toughen up maybe not as much as china, but liberal here whip criminals with a hot hershey bar. I just meant instead of china having prisoners mow grass the china way, have them grab a hefty grab bag and pick up trash. That's all. It's constructive criticism.

      @NJ-wb1cz 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      redwine65, this has nothing to do with inventing ridiculous laws and "jailing" people specifically to get free slave labor and fill private prisons for profit, like in US.
      Incarceration rate in US - 693 per 100,000, incarceration rate in China - 118 (official) 160 (unofficial, inculding labor camps ruanpingshan was talking about). That's almost 600 PERCENT more literally non-free citizens in US compared to China, there's simply no contest.

    • @redwine65
      @redwine65 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      you don't have violent criminals pick up trash, you have your kids who made a mistake do it...then they learn from it, but are not a big threat to the community either. It works well in the US. and I think if the US jails were as harsh as china, you wouldn't have a lot of criminals looking for three hots and a cot, on the tax payers dime.

    • @NJ-wb1cz
      @NJ-wb1cz 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      redwine65, what the hell are you talking about? It's not about "harshness of jails", it's about prisons being specifically used as slave camps predominantly for black people in US.
      In ALL other countries, including China, there are NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE IN PRISONS to use them as a significant part of work force. I'm not sure if I can answer your question about why prisoners don't pick up all that trash in China any clearer.

      Just hope that the new generation isn't made of wretched egalitarians like in the U.S.; a massive portion of elected officials introduce unquestionably *EVIL* laws JUST so they can pander to the undeserved female vote.
      China seems well insulated enough and has felt the effects of communism so maybe they'll avoid it (?)

    Brilliant video guys, this is so good, chatter and exploring. C milk got bang on the money when he said that you both are dipping your toes in the water. No one else has had the foresight, imagination or bravery to do this. One of the most unexplored countries but also the most mysterious country and culture in the world . This is by far the best way to explore this wonderful land . If I had a hat I would tip it to you both . Awesome 😎😎

    But why are Mainland chinese so rude and uncivlised? Poorer countries don't act as badly as mainland chinese, what's the deal with that? i thought they were meant to have 5000 years of culture and history, it sure doesn't seem like it

      poorer countries are much worse but you don't realize it since you are less likely to go there and their citizens also have no money to travel abroad and risk demonstrating their poor behaviors.

    One of the best videos you guys have produced. I have watched many times and it seems like a farewell to China whether you knew it at the time or not. The video is somewhat of an analogy to your China experience. I love when Winston says lets go this way because it is more "pikey". Always up for exploring or finding out more. Or when C-Milk notices the beautiful bamboo forest littered with trash. Amazed at the beauty but understanding the reality. My absolute favorite part is the ending with Winston holding the single flower in his hand in the middle of nowhere and summing up his feelings about his experience in China. That single flower in Winston's hand, at that moment, represented your appreciation for the beauty and experience that China has brought both of you. So simple..and very powerful. You conquered all of China.

    I am glad you guys did a video such as this. During my time travel for State, I was able to see the true nature of countries and I was always surprised and pleased at what I encountered away from the developed "Western" cities. The true nature of a country's people comes from the heart of the land which is where you will find people such as that. If I return to a country that I once visited, I do my level best to return to the area outside of the city. Kudos and cheers to you both.

Very cool videos, keep them coming - just slow down the head/helmet-cam movements - keep your eyes straight ahead and turn your head/helmet slowly side-to-side please.
