    Groovy vibes. I love it.
14:00 That little riff reminds me of the end music of 5th Element movie.
That A (6th) harmonizes as the 6th, yet also sneakily kind of resets the tonality to A, making the C chord sound like extensions of A.

12:52 "very Vai". It's funny that I was thinking exactly that right from the beginning. Those big interval jumps sliding up and down on one string have a lot to do with it. Lots of folks will start on a specific note and slide up or down to no specific note. But Vai often goes the other way. Especially when he starts at a higher position with no specific note being articulated, and rapidly slides down the the note you hear.

This gives me some giggles. It took WAY too long...like seriously, it took 20 years, but I can finally write solos that sound as good as what you played without even thinking about it. It makes playing so much fun.
Just little insane chunks chasing the flavor of the tune with some killer phrasing and 100 ways to deliver each note. If only I could have done it like that 16 years ago.
I don't think there is a shortcut here other than thousands upon thousands of hours of trial and error.

I noticed a shift in improving solos when I focused on all the chords used in a given song and if they change ket kinda weird.
      It got easier to track.

    - think less about in key and more about in chord
    - you wanna develop ideas based on something you've already played (consistency)
    - question and answer, take the same lick and end it on two different ways

Duuuuuudddddddddddeeeeeeeeeeeee.... (like in Shoogagoogagunga)... best lesson ever! That saying a LOT. Really. Great. Channel. But this lesson is chock full of goodness. Humor, guitar chops... but most important, HOW TO WRITE GREAT SOLOS, step-by-step. I have my own approach. But I learned a great deal in this lesson. Please do more lessons like this. I am up'ing my Patreon support b/c of this lesson. Correction - I just updated it (I am related to you in some weirder way than before). Well done! BOOM! Off to watch again... lots to learn. Thank you. Stay safe!

Thanks Ben for a timely lesson at step dad speed on solo writing. I'm currently working on this aspect of my playing where a lot of times it seems overwhelming with all the "modes" to choose from, but your lesson just reaffirms that one must always break things down into bite sized chunks.
BTW I love pineapples (I have a similar shirt) and I eat them a lot because they are yummy, but also because they contain bromelain which is a great anti-inflammatory enzyme terrific for joint problems and arthritis. Got to keep those aging finger joints healthy and limber for more jamming and Uncle Ben lessons. Stay safe!

I dig this vid. I am getting to the point in my search to be a stand alone lead player that I find myself doing just this. Unfortunately I didn't spend enough time in the past learning wth it was I was playing just relied on my ear-holes and hand-fingers to make a good sound. Thankfully this song is done over Chords and in the major scale. You didn't go all modes, and how to use them, on us.

Here's modes in 30 seconds... Also here's all the theoretical approach you need to builds towards melody in a song.. but don't forget the ear is king.
Again I think you just summed up everything within about 30 seconds of talking.
Your lessons are dope and I think your approach is so accessible and helpful!
