Hey guys, fun fact - that was actually Rex playing guitar underneath Dimes solo on the CFH song. He wrote that line. There's a vid on TH-cam recently where he talks about he did a lot of writing for Pantera. They were awesome together
Rex said so, and it is true. Besides, Dime was lucky to have such a great musician as a bass player on his side, because most bass players tend to ruin the tightness in such guitar riffs.
People often forget that he and Vinnie were also HUGE Rush fans, and Dime was no slouch, he paid attention to everyone. I think he got his love of those sorts of pinch harmonics from Alex honestly.
This put a smile on my face. You really explained why Dime(and Eddie) was unique guitar player who stood out far from the others of his genre. Ironically, everyone wanted to sound like Eddie but no one payed tribute to him like Dime because he was original and knew what he wanted to hear.

This is such a good conversation about the things that people miss about Dime's playing. I've always LOVED how bluesy and almost jazzy his playing would get. You'd hear those odd tonalities in his riffs and at first, you'd be shocked by how he even thought it up, and after a couple playbacks, you just took it as his gospel. The man was blessed with a gift that most of us will never understand, and I will love his work until the end of time.

Really loved that you guys touched on Dime not being a technically trained player, he played what sounded good to him. And that's art. That's what created the masterpiece of Pantera, and Dime's legend. It was pure art.
Man, some of the best times of my life were seeing Pantera locally at the clubs here in Texas pre-Cowboys. The triplet thing is part of the blues influence they had, which is hard to escape here. Not that anyone would want to. They may have been metal, but they had a huge blues thing to them, which added to their magic. And they were all cool dudes. It was always great running into them at random locations. They always had the time.
Lots of fun seeing these two sharing their love for Dimebag's playing and making it educational along the way. Thanks to Nick for all the classic Riffer Madness stuff with Dime, and to Ben for all the in-depth lessons in shredsmanship.

Ben’s comment about not learning all of Dime’s stuff rings so true. I often feel like when I learn a song or solo it does lose some of the magic. The records I loved in high school are only fun when I am playing along to them now. Great insight uncle Ben.

I was with my friend at Sweetwater and he was riffing Regular People really loud through a EVH iii with a Marshall 4x12. Nick walked up and gave my buddy the thumps up and showed us his Dime tattoo. My buddy didn’t even know that Nick was the guy from their online videos. I was like “OMG THT WAS THE DUDE!”
I love that you guys put this video together. All the thanks for the work you two put into this. Dime fans get obsessed with the gear,tone and nailing the big solos to impress people but its the basics and giant wall of rythem Dime makes that should be the beginning of the Dime journey.
Man it was so cool to hear about something I've been telling my son's for years from 2 guys I respect. Just because you are playing a cover , you don't have to pay it note for note. I've made a lot of great sounding riff from making mistakes.

This is actually an incredibly valuable and essential guitar lesson on 'groove', in metal and hard rock. Often overlooked but absolutely essential. Also on the scale-lesson; there is a TH-cam video out there that explains the notes don't matter at all; it's all about the rhythm, even in jazz. It's everywhere the same; it's all about rhythm and groove. Essential video, this one. Well done, lads!

I had a great friend I could sit and geek out with about songs and musicians. For hours we would trade licks and learn parts of songs we had forgotten about and how awesome they were. The conversation and playing would inject such inspiration for the guitar and music. This reminds me of those great times. Awesome to watch. Please keep making videos like this.
Great video, fellas. Another similarity between Dime and EVH was that they both were raised by fathers who were professional musicians. Jan Van Halen was a bad ass jazz player - clarinet/sax . Dime’s father, Jerry Abbott, was a country player/songwriter/producer, owned Pantego Sound where he produced the early/pre-CFH Pantera records.
I've heard a million players version of I'm Broken . Including my own. None of us are truly getting the slide tonality that he did. He had a cool touch for sure

I personally haven't learned much from EVH maybe ain't talking bout love the beginning part. Just because it's intimidating and fun just to still air guitar Mr Halens' genius and not have any idea where it starts and ends. I'm a huge Randy Rhodes prophet and learned many of his songs sjd solos note for note, then didn't play them for a good amount of time and did my best to relearn them by ear and memory. Which is a great way of finding your own voice within the artist you mimicked and complemented their juice and phrasing and evolved it into your own translation and voice .long live both EVH DBD

I've always said this. VH and Pantera are my favorite bands of all time. It's the brother connection.
This video is more validation that #1 Dime’s tone and style are literally impossible to replicate. And #2 He was truly one of a kind.
